Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday July 15, 2012

MARY ANNA DOWNEY Beautiful Mary Anna Downey Cox surrounded by family and friends transitioned July 11, 2012. Mary first came to Abq. in 1944 and married the love of her life pilot, then USAF Major Gene Cox stationed at Kirkland AFB. He had met and was enamored with Mary, a University of Iowa student while on a cross country. They wed a year later in Abq., a decision Mary often said she never regretted. In her daughters eyes her parents seemed like a glamorous 1940's movie couple from "The greatest generation." They traveled, lived in Germany and transferred back to Abq. in 1951 and remained permanently. Mary, a cancer survivor, was preceded by her sweet son Vietnam Vet Douglas Eugene and her husband Eugene (Gene) Wesley. She leaves behind daughter, Anne Carol Cox Hayes and son Eugene W. Cox II; two grandsons and their wives Douglas Eugene Hayes and Mary Elizabeth, David Lee Hayes and Katelyn. Mary delighted in her great grandson Davis. She also leaves long time friend Larry Keenan and her wonderful caretaker and friend Joe L. Valdez and her "lil' darlin" schnauzer Hilary. Mary was the ultimate homemaker, wife, mother and friend. She was a gourmet cook, her 6' beds of roses and flowers were exquisite. Mary loved her family and home. She presided over the Cox farm after Genes death. Mary loved the horses nickering as she approached with apples and carrots. She enjoyed years of duplicate bridge with her friends. Mary had sparkling Irish blue eye a wonderful sense of humor and sparkling wit. Mary a loyal caring friend corresponded and maintained friendships until the end from Maple Grove Elementary through Lincoln High in Des Moines, Iowa including her three older brothers and their families. Mary and Gene were a gregarious couple and "Mary" Dad said, "was the hostess with the mostest." She will be immensely missed by those she leaves behind. Thank you Mom for your wisdom, devotion, concern, love, generosity and fun. We will always love you. You and Dad are in our hearts forever. Mary a longtime member of Monte Vista Christian Church will have a private family interment at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. The family plans a celebration of Mary's life at a later date.
