ABRAHAM -- Lawrence Thomas Abraham, family patriarch, devoted husband, loving father, and loving grandfather, passed away at the age of 94 on the morning of Saturday September 11, 2010. He died peacefully at home. Mr. Abraham was born in Lebanon on September 11, 1916 to George and Catherine (Zamer) Abraham. He had 11 brothers and sisters: Fred, Jack, Wilma, Alice, John, George, Mary, Betty, Anna, Rose and Helen. All have preceded him in death. The Abraham family came to America settling in Johnstown, PA when Lawrence was two years of age. He graduated from Johnstown High School and received his civil engineering certificate from the University of New Mexico. He was employed in the Johnstown Steel Mills from 1936 to 1939, and worked as a construction foreman from 1939 to 1940. After meeting the love of his life, native New Mexican Wadette Goze, and marrying her on October 6, 1940, they settled in Magdalena, New Mexico. They lived in Magdalena, Espanola, and Los Alamos from 1940 to 1946. During those early years he worked in construction and carpentry. While in Los Alamos, Mr. Abraham was construction superintendent under the United States Engineers, in charge of building living quarters and testing facilities for the laboratories in Los Alamos. In 1946 the Abraham's moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico and resided there until 1976. During their time spent in Santa Fe Mr. Abraham was president of Lawrence T. Abraham Contracting Company of Santa Fe building schools, post offices, apartment buildings and commercial buildings through out the state. He took great pride in having one of the first contractor licenses issued in the state. He served as state coordinator in the Strategic Vulnerability Survey of New Mexico for the Fourth Army Ft. Sam Houston in 1947. Mr. Abraham retired from construction in the 1960's to devote his life, time and resources to what was most important to him, his wife and family. While in Santa Fe, a non-partisan in politics, Mr. Abraham was active in fraternal organizations and was a member of the Santa Fe Lodge No. 460 of the Elks. A Thirty-second degree Mason in the Scottish Rite, he was a member of Montezuma Lodge No. 1, of the New Mexico Consistory, and was active in the Shrine. He was a member of Yucca Temple White Shrine, of Ballut Abyad Temple of Albuquerque, and in 1958 became a director of the Santa Fe Shrine Presbyterian Church of Santa Fe. In 1976 Lawrence and Wadette made their final move to Albuquerque to be near two of their children. Once settled in Albuquerque they were active members of Four Hills Country Club. At the age of 60 Mr. Abraham took up the game of golf and enjoyed his circle of many friends and neighbors. Mr. and Mrs. Abraham were long time supporters of UNM and they were charter members of the Tom L. Popejoy Society. He was preceeded in death by his beloved wife Wadette in 2002. Mr. Abraham is survived by daughter Sandra Dhieux and her husband Ernie of Broomfield, Co, their daughter Joyel Dhieux and her husband Chris Thorn of Boulder, Co; and their son, Matthew Dhieux and his wife Molly and their children Lilly and Maddie of Littleton, Co; daughter Dr. Karen Adele Abraham, Associate Vice-President Alumni Relations at UNM; and son, Mayor Larry P. Abraham, his wife Beverly, of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque, and their son Lawrence Geoffrey Abraham, of San Francisco, CA. The loss of his incredible presence will be profound. However he has left for his family a legacy of love (he was an eternal romantic); love of family, love of life and love of nature; strength, wisdom, nobility, humility, integrity, optimism, honesty, generosity, humor and playfulness, simplicity and resourcefulness, service, loyalty, commitment and dedication. He was proud to have maintained his independence (with minimal help from outside caregivers) until his final day. At 75 years old, for his and Wadette's 50th wedding anniversary, Lawrence built with his own hands a small, heart-shaped Chapel on his ranch in Socorro to commemorate their love. Lawrence and Wadette now reside in eternal peace and love in the chapel he named "Sweethearts for Eternity". In his own words: "After you shed some emotional tears, take happy note my life was fulfilled beyond its fondest expectations. From humble beginnings of a depression born, poverty bred uneducated minority group, I rose to the top in the toughest profession of General Contractor, building laboratories, schools and post offices. All without benefit of politics, improper methods, or taking advantage of my fellowman. Even more important my family was always first in every consideration..." He was very much loved and respected and will be missed incredibly by all of those that had the good fortune to know and love him. A small private family service will be held. BROGDON -- Irene Brogdon, 83, passed away on Saturday, September 11, 2010. She was born in Walnut Grove, Mo, on April 3, 1924. The family moved to Batesville, Arkansas when she was six years old. After her marriage to Cecil "Neal" Brogdon they moved to Albuquerque in 1961. Rene was an accomplished seamstress, artist, potter and gardener. She was widely known for the beautiful pottery and story teller jewelry that she made. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil "Neal" Brogdon in 2000. Rene is survived by her sons, Michael Brogdon and wife Kathi, and Mark Brogdon; she will be greatly missed by the grandchildren, she loved so much Jennifer Terrell and husband Brian, Aaron Brogdon and wife Adrienne, Sheena Hamilton and Case Brogdon; three great-grandchildren, Haley and Luke Terrell and Aiden Brogdon; and several nieces and nephews. A special thanks to Marie Valdez, her caregiver, for the compassion, love and sense of humor she showed Irene over the last two years. Cremation has taken place. A private family memorial service will be held in her honor.

CASEY -- Dr. Kenneth Casey, 70, passed on Sunday, September 12, 2010 at 2:40 a.m., with family by his side. He was born on April 9, 1940 in Lubbock, Texas. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps and spent his life building several successful communications related businesses and built over 100 television stations. He got his Doctorate in Clinical Hypnotherapy at the American Institute of Clinical Hypnotherapy. Kenneth was the majority owner and CEO of North Pacific International Television, Inc., which operates KPST TV 44 in Seattle, WA. Kenneth is survived by his wife and business partner, Charlene Casey, the love of his life for 26 years; He is also survived by his children, Chris Casey, Michelle Thulin, Lee Stevenson, Amy Weh and Lisa Marye Casey-McDonough; and four grandchildren, Ian, Grant, and Tegan Thulin and Brooke Stevenson. "Though the ones we love may leave life as we know it. In our memory, the love we knew will always carry on." Visitation will be held at Daniels Family Funeral Services on Monday, September 20, 2010 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Santa Fe National Cemetery on Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at 1:00 p.m.

CLARK -- Donald L. Clark, 78, a resident of Rio Rancho, NM went to be with his Lord on Friday September 10, 2010. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Shirley; children, Jonathan, Isabel, Kimberly, David and wife Deanna; sister, Jeannine and husband Lucian; brother, John and wife Patty; sister-in-law Rita; grandchildren, Matthew and Karina, Shaughn, Myles, Nicholas, Josh, Jeremy, Jonathan; great grandchild, Zane; nieces and nephews and Chester and Evelyn and many employees and friends through the years. Don owned Production Components, Clark Company Inc. Don moved to New Mexico from Michigan in 1959. He was an active member of Grace Brethren Church and Alameda Community Church (now Alameda Bible Church) in the north valley. He loved the north valley and living in Western Meadows. Don attended First Baptist Church of Rio Rancho and the Keenagers. CULLINAN -- Joseph Cullinan, age 49, a resident of Albuquerque for 25 years, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 7, 2010. He was preceded in death by his father Robert Cullinan. He is survived by his mother, Lois; two brothers, Steve and his wife Laurie, also of Albuquerque, Jaimie and his wife Debbie; sister Bonnie Westervelt and her husband Chuck; three nephews; one niece; one great-nephew; his love and soulmate, Silvia Guistwite; his beloved cat, Kaisey; and a multitude of friends. DAVIS -- Norma Sue Davis, age 75, a resident of Los Lunas, NM, was called to be with our Savior on Thursday, September 16, 2010. She was a member of the 1st Baptist Church of Bosque Farms, NM. She was preceded in death by her sister, Edna Davis; brother, Lem Davis; and parents, Arthur and Mae Davis. Norma is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Ernest Ray Davis; three children, Debra Sue Hewitt, Darrell Arthur Davis and Donald Ray Davis; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. GALLEGOS -- Jerry E. After a long battle with cancer, Jerry E. Gallegos 74, peacefully passed away in his home surrounded by family and friends on September 16, 2010. Jerry was born August 29, 1936 in Pastura, NM to the home of Antonio and Josefita (Via) Gallegos. He was reared and attended schools in Pastura and Santa Rosa. Jerry served in the United States Air Force from 1955 through 1959. He married Patricia Gallegos on June 16, 1962 in Santa Rosa. Jerry owned and operated Jerry's Super Shell in Santa Rosa for many years. He was also a longtime Guadalupe County Rancher. Jerry was a faithful member of the St. Rose of Lima Church. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 5146 in Santa Rosa where he served as Grand Knight and held many other offices. He was a past member of the Santa Rosa Volunteer Fire Department where he served as Fire Chief. He was currently serving on the Guadalupe County Live Stock Producers Organization. Jerry enjoyed welding, hunting, camping, fishing, being at his ranch and spending time with his friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Carolina Gallegos who passed away as an infant, Carrie Campos and Ernestine Trujillo; and his brother Tony Gallegos. Survivors include his wife Patricia of the family home in Santa Rosa; his son Greg Gallegos and significant other Barbra Bailey of Santa Rosa; his daughter Janice McCord and husband Marcus of Rio Rancho; his grandchildren: Brandon Roybal, Michael Roybal, Marcus McCord, Gabriel McCord, Daniel McCord and Michael Bailey; Also surviving are his sisters, Cordelia Snow, and Oma Mettert both of California, Grace Gallegos of Santa Rosa; and his brother Arnold Gallegos of Santa Rosa; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of relatives and friends. Rosary services will be held on Sunday, September 19, 2010 at 7:00 p.m., at St. Rose of Lima Church. GARCIA -- Stephanie Ann Garcia, 36, died suddenly on September 15, 2010. She was born in Santa Barbara California on October 8th 1973, and was a resident of Albuquerque for 24 years. She was preceded in death by her mother, Angelina Smith. Stephanie is survived by her husband of 17 years, James L. GARCIA -- Virginia "Ginny" S. Garcia, 87, a resident of Albuquerque since 1960, passed away on Tuesday, September 14, 2010. She is survived by her children Barbara Carrara and husband, Pier, Christine Garcia, Charles "Chip" Garcia, John Garcia and wife, Connie, Anne Ramirez, and Rich Garcia and wife, Bridget; grandchildren David Garcia, Amy Carrara, Aaron Garcia and wife, Taylor, Matthew Garcia, Brianna Garcia, and Dominique Garcia; great-grandchildren Noah Driscoll and Simon Driscoll; and sisters Arla Mae Bogner, Dolly Boettcher and Sally Miller. Mrs. Garcia was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Col. Homer Garcia, USAF (ret.) and son Lt. Col. David A. Garcia, USMC (ret.). Ginny was active in the Pearl Harbor Survivors' Association. She was a member of Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church, where she had been active in the Golden Agers and Holy Name Society. Mrs. Garcia worked for many years at Albuquerque TVI. GENTRY -- Lois M. Gentry passed away at her home in Oceanside, CA, surrounded by her family on Sunday, September 12, 2010, following a lengthy illness. She was 91. This marks the beginning of her new life in the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was a much-loved mother, grandmother and friend, and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Lois was born on November 7, 1918 to Bonnie and Garth Hammon in Sayre, OK. She later moved to Las Cruces, NM, to help run the family business, where she met and married the love of her life, Frank Gentry. Lois and Frank moved to Albuquerque, NM, where Lois worked at Sandia Labs and helped Frank run multiple businesses. In 1988, Lois, Frank and their son, Greg, moved to Oceanside, CA, where they opened up Amigo Travel Agency and later retired. Lois was preceded in death by three daughters, Bonnie Lee, Donna Lee and Gail Ann; her mother, Bonnie Chambers; father, Garth Hammon; stepfather, Fred Chambers; husband, Frank Gentry and sisters, Maurine McMahan, Florence Gillispie and Peggy Mayes. She is survived by her daughter Dayle Ann Hartenberger and husband, Tim, of Albuquerque, NM; son Greg Gentry and wife, Sonja, of Oceanside, CA; sisters, Katy Loyd of Lufkin, Texas, and Joy Sudigala of Tucson, AZ; grandchildren Jerrod, Kristen and Jason Hartenberger, Linda Gentry, Vallie Miller and Jeremy Shea; and six great-grandchildren. During the last few years of Lois' declining health, her son Greg was blessed with the honor of caring for, and tending to, her every need. His efforts were tireless and unselfish, his stamina and purpose steadfast and unshakable and his love for her deep and unconditional. For these reasons, Lois was able to live out the last years of her life blessed with dignity and grace. Lois was a one-of-a-kind, generous, well-read, nutty coconut ice cream sweet-toothed, intensely faithful servant of the Lord who was deeply devoted to her family and well-loved by all who knew her. She will be missed more than words can tell but will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, September 23, 2010, at 12:30 p.m., with Pastor Hal Schulz officiating, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park, 1999 El Camino Real, Oceanside, with a reception to follow at the family's home. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 from 4:00-8:00 p.m., at Eternal Hills Mortuary, 1999 El Camino Real, Oceanside. GONZALES -- Gloria Gonzales, 62, a native New Mexican, passed away on September 10, 2010. She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Felix Gonzales; daughter, Felicia Spicochi and husband John; son, Estevan Gonzales and girlfriend Rebecca Gilmore; sister, Lillian Chavez and husband Orlando; sister-in-law, Mabel Hendrickson and husband Ray; sister-in-law, Angie Soto and husband Sam; niece, Melinde Gonzales and husband Armenio; brother-in-law, Harold and his wife Jimmie; niece, Juanita Chavez and daughter Ivy; sister-in-law, Minnie Martinez; niece, Deborah Santistevan and husband Robert; nephew, Mark Martinez and wife Denise; sister, Nina Hoch. HILL -- Howard Hill, 80, went to be with his Redeemer, Lord and Savior on Friday, September 17, 2010, while in the presence of his loving family at his side. Howard was born in St. Paul, Minnesota where he worked as a welder and resided until moving his family to New Mexico in 1972. After returning to college at the age of 43 and receiving his degree in Vocational Education, he taught Vocational Welding at Farmington High School for 21 years, where his students won many annual competitions. He retired from teaching in 1996 and moved to Albuquerque to be closer to where most of his children and grandchildren were living. He and his wife of 58 years remained there until his death. Howard was a fully devoted follower of Jesus Christ. He was known mostly for his compassion for others and his passion to serve in whatever capacity he was needed. His outward charm broke the barriers of youth through seniors alike. It was not unlike Howard to be seen in one moment mentoring and encouraging children, and the next giving a helping hand to the elderly. His own children remember him as never missing any of their events, or sporting activities, even if that meant a long drive just to be a spectator. Howard is survived by his wife Bonnie; and his four children: Leon and his wife Cheryl and their two children, Jeffrey and Abigail, Richard and his wife Cher and their two children, Courtney and Emma and Courtney's son Orion, George and his wife Sheri and their two children Tyler and Joshua, and Claudia Steinhauser and her husband John; He also has one surviving sister Florence Anderson; as well as many relatives and friends. KERANEN -- June G. Keranen died peacefully on September 7, 2010. She was born on October 11, 1923 in Ironwood, Michigan. She moved to New Mexico in 1947 for treatment of tuberculosis and married Tauno Keranen, also of Ironwood in 1949. They had three children. June was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and aunt. She was the keeper of the family memories, loved to travel and meet people, enjoyed a keen intellect and a deep interest in politics. She was a wise woman, beloved by her family, and will be deeply missed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tauno; and her youngest son, Steve. She is survived by her son, Bob Keranen and his children, Stuart and Jordan; her daughter, Norma Keranen, her husband Tom Logan, and their son, Iain Logan; and many nieces, nephews and extended family members. KULA -- Lt. Col. Loren W. Kula, USAF Retired, passed away on September 16, 2010. He was born on September 23, 1932 in Oxford Junction, Iowa to Louis and Florence (Yale) Kula and graduated from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. He married Betty Golden in 1957, and they enjoyed a happy marriage for forty-four years until her death in 2001. A long-time resident of Albuquerque, he entered the Air Force as an aviation cadet in 1953 and retired in 1973. He flew reconnaissance, strategic, and tactical air missions in the United States and internationally, and combat missions in Vietnam. His many medals and commendations reflect his outstanding performance as a pilot and officer. Upon retiring from the military, he was a corporate pilot for Muller Construction and Rust Tractors. He also flew for the Air Ambulance service. He was an enthusiastic member of two barbershop singing groups: the New Mexichords and Duke City Technical Chorus. Loren is survived by his children, Mary Lea (married to Roy Lea) of Arizona, Connie Nowak of Ohio, Greg Kula of Albuquerque, and Lori Mehl (married to Ian Mehl) of Albuquerque; He is also survived by ten grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. His wife Betty; son Steve; and great-grandson Alex predeceased him. A funeral mass will be held at Church of the Risen Savior, 7701 Wyoming Blvd NE, at 10:00 a.m., on Tuesday, September 21, 2010. LADOUX -- Dorothy Lenoir (Kelly) LaDoux, or "Kelly" as she was more commonly known, and a long time resident of Albuquerque passed away at her home Saturday evening, September 11, 2010. She was born on March 27, 1924 at Minneota, Minnesota. She grew up on a farm near Cohasset, Minnesota and attended Grand Rapids High School in Grand Rapids, Minnesota graduating in the spring of 1942. After World War II, she married Wilfred J. (Frenchie) LaDoux of Marble, Minnesota in July 1946. Together they raised two children, Thomas and Debra. For most of her life she was a stay-at-home Mom but when the family moved to Albuquerque in October of 1970, she found work in a nursing home and in 1978 she decided to pursue a career in nursing. She enrolled at the University of Albuquerque and graduated in May 1980 at age 52. She worked at several local hospitals prior to her retirement. Kelly is survived by her son, Thomas D. LaDoux; daughter, Debra J. LaDoux; and granddaughter Kea M. LaDoux, all of Albuquerque. On Tuesday, September 21, 2010, at 10:00 a.m., the recitation of a rosary will precede a mass in her memory which will be offered at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church. MOFFETT -- Mount Taylor Moffett Jr, age 59, a resident of Belen, NM, passed away Monday, September 13, 2010 from prostate cancer. Taylor was preceded in death by his parents, Mt Taylor Moffett and Margia Moffett; and by his brother Eugene Moffett. Taylor is survived by his wife of 39 years, Dolores Moffett; his three daughters; Alesha and husband John Dillander, Lila and husband Lance Major, Aurora Moffett and husband Joe Sanchez; his son Zuriyel Moffett; his four grandchildren; Lithany Devontenno, Kameron Major, Dakota Sanchez and Adalya Dillander; his sister Hazel Chavez; his brother Arthur Moffett; and his uncle, who was a source of encouragement for him, Ben Moffett. Although unaffiliated with any religious beliefs, Taylor was a deeply spiritual man, who believed primarily in love and doing the right thing. He demonstrated this daily through acts of kindness and words of encouragement and guidance. After learning of his cancer he wanted to share these principles that he learned in life. Taylor wrote the book One Plus One. He said, "A fictional story. But I want people to know that our thoughts and feelings affect our lives before and after death. It's the Law of Attraction." We ask anyone wanting to give flowers, please opt for living plants. Since Taylor donated his body to science there will not be a burial. PAVLAKOVICH -- Nick Pavlakovich, 94, a resident of Albuquerque since 1954, passed away Wednesday, September 15, 2010 after a short illness. He was born in Gary, IN. on November 19, 1915. He was a 1st generation American, as his parents (Josip Frank Pavlakovich and Zlata (Goldie) Baksic) immigrated from Chesta, Croatia around the turn of the century. In 1928 after living in Chase, MI, Cleveland and Alliance OH, the family moved back to Gary, IN and with the help of friends and family, they built their home on Fillmore St. He graduated in 1934 from Lew Wallace High School. He was a member of the following organizations: Sphinx '33 and '34; Junior Honor Society; Track Team '33; Safety Committee '33, and Poetry Memory '32. He excelled in math and chemistry while in school. On the 23rd of September 1941 he joined the Army of the United States and left the Air Corps on November 2, 1945 as a 1st Lieutenant. During his service he was stationed in FL, Carlsbad and Deming NM. Most of his time was spent at Deming where he was an instructor for the Bombardier School. Some of his students left the following notes in the class books. "Thanks Nick for helping me over the humps around the end of the month" and "Nick - I think it is a privilege to be next to you in this book. Sure hope we can stick together and sweat this mess out". At Deming, he met his wife to be for 45 years, Etta Fae Eaves and they were married on May 27, 1944 in Mesilla Park, NM. After the military, his career was that as a master carpenter where he worked around the country on such jobs as; Tennessee Valley Authority Dam project in Tennessee, the school for the Navajo people at Keams Canyon, AZ; housing projects at Los Alamos, NM; the high school in Cuba, NM; the Four Corners power plant, the American Gypsum plant, Civic Plaza, and the FOP Lodge in Albuquerque, NM. He was a member of the Carpenter Local Union 1319 in town. He enjoyed bird hunting and fishing on the Brazos and particularly in the Rio Grande "Box" where he blazed his own trails to the river. At home his interests were gardening, crossword puzzles and playing chess. He was particularly proud of his climbing red rose bush and his apple tree on which he had grafted four different types of apples. His favorite hang out was the 4th Street Dunkin Donuts, where he would meet with his friends, everyday for coffee and a manager's special cinnamon roll. He is survived by his children: Nick Jr. and wife Tina, Henry J. and his wife Ann, Joseph R. and his wife Maxine and Barbara Ann Hale and her husband James; grandchildren, Alisa R. and her husband Rick Giron II, Daniel R., Brandy A., Mary E., Stephen E., Jocelyn H., Joseph R.II, Tamara N., Matthew A. and Jacob B.; great - grandchildren, Christopher M., Matthew R., Shalynn L., Julia F., Kimberly N., Constance E., Sydney E., Emilee G.; and his sisters, Katie, Rose and Dorothy. He was preceded in death by his parents (Josip '41 and Zlata '73); wife Etta Fae in 1989; brothers, Zonimar '13, John '15, Peter '27, Emil '75, Joseph '88; sisters, Anna '50 and Goldie 2003; nephew Joseph; and granddaughter Nancy Lydia 2003. ROONEY -- Patrick Joseph Rooney, 82, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, died September 17, 2010, at St. John's Rehabilitation Facility in Albuquerque, with his daughters Anne and Sheila, and his long time friend and former wife, Mara Rooney at his side, after battling a long illness. Patrick, the second of six children, was born November 24, 1927, to Patrick and Elizabeth Rooney at Kiltyclogher, County Leitrim, Ireland. He immigrated to the United States in 1948 and joined the US Army in September 1950, where he served his chosen country with distinction during the Korean Conflict. He moved to Albuquerque in 1953. He worked for many years for the Public Service Company of New Mexico, as well as at Kirtland Air Force Base. He is survived by a sister, Margaret O'Hara, of Melbourne, Australia, a brother, Francis Rooney, of Yonkers, New York, a son, Patrick Francis Rooney, of Broomfield, Colorado, daughters Anne Elizabeth White and Sheila Marie Rooney of Albuquerque, a son, Michael Ray Rooney, of Albuquerque, and seven grandchildren. He enjoyed participating in Veterans of Foreign War as well as American Legion Activities, and was an avid hiker in the Sandia foothills. SHAW -- EMIL SHAW: LABOR, CIVIL RIGHTS AND PEACE ACTIVIST March 3, 1929 - September 12, 2010 Emil Shaw, a lifelong fighter for progressive causes, died on Sunday, September 12th, 2010 at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque from cardiac and related causes at the age of 81. Born in Vienna, Austria of Jewish parents, Emil and his family were persecuted by the Nazis and came to the United States in 1939. His experiences instilled in him a deep hatred of Nazi ideology, racism and inequality in any form, which he fought all his life. Emil strove for a better life for working-class people, becoming a lifelong member of the Communist Party USA. Emil spent his early years in Michigan and 38 years in Brooklyn, where he married and raised his family. Shortly after his marriage, he spent several months in the army during the Korean War, receiving an honorable discharge due to faulty eyesight. Emil had many jobs, but worked for a long period of time in a knitting mill and later became a junior high school shop teacher, obtaining a Bachelors Degree from City College in New York. His activities included leading tenant strikes, union work, organizing buses to Washington for civil rights and Vietnam protests, electoral campaigning, and fighting for senior issues. Emil spent his retirement with his wife, Rose, in New Mexico, where he remained an activist to the end. Emil was known and loved for his corny sense of humor, commitment, dedication, and genuine compassion. He loved the arts and was an avid fisherman. He was a member of SouthWest Organizing Project, AFT New Mexico Retirees, Gray Panthers of Greater Albuquerque, the NM AFL-CIO Retirees Council, and Alliance for Retired Americans. Emil is survived by his wife, Rose; daughter Rebecca Shaw-Gove; son-in-law Geoffrey Gove; son Nathan Shaw; daughter-in-law Sandra Shaw; and grandson Michael Shaw. SHERRY -- Andrew Sherry, 95, of Rio Rancho passed away on Monday, September 13, 2010, after a long life and a short illness. Andy was born on February 16, 1915 to parents, John and Mary Sherry of McKeesport, Pennsylvania. Andy served honorably, for his country during WW II as a Paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division and participated in combat in the North African Campaign, Sicily, Italy, Rhineland, Ardennes, Belgium, and the Battle of the Bulge where he experienced severe frost bite. Upon returning to the States, and discharge from the service, he was employed by US Steel at their Duquesne works plant as a stove tender in the blast furnace. In 1952, he and his wife, Georgia and son, Don moved across the state to Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania where he began work at the new plant built by US Steel in Morrisville until he retired in 1977. Seeking a warmer, healthier climate Andy and Georgia, with Don's help, moved to Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Andy's beloved wife, Georgia preceded him in death in 1991. Andy was a member and past exalted ruler of Rio Rancho Elks Lodge, #2500. He was also a member of the VFW and American Legion. Andy is survived by his son, Don, of Rio Rancho; sister, Mary Wolf of North Versailles, Pennsylvania; stepdaughters, Margaret Butler of Talcott, West Virginia and Barbara Brooks of Natchitoches, Louisiana. Andy will be remembered for his easy going, affable good nature and his generosity. Anyone wishing to make a contribution in Andy's memory may do so to the Presbyterian Hospice Foundation. SLATER -- Richard (Dick) Slater, 87, passed away on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 in Albuquerque, NM. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Emery Thieman; nieces, Alice Thieman, Betty Humphrey and husband, Pete, and Patricia Thieman; nephew, Mike Slater and wife, Margie; five great-nieces; and one great-nephew; and several great-great-nieces; and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his loving wife of over 50 years, Josephine Slater. Richard was a WWII veteran, retired as Production Supervisor of a paint manufacturing company, and was an avid golfer. SOLTYS -- Frank J. Soltys, 75, of SaddleBrooke, AZ passed away September 4, 2010 following a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth "Betty"; brother John; Aunt Virginia Kaczor; nieces, Christine Soltys and Joann Hatter; and several other nieces and nephews. Frank was born in Newark, NJ on December 9, 1934. He graduated from Newark College of Engineering and was a member of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. Following graduation, Frank was employed by Babcock and Wilcox as a start-up engineer on power plants, traveling throughout the country. While working in Albuquerque, he liked the area so much, he decided to stay. Frank was employed by Bridgers and Paxton Consulting Engineers, Inc., for 25 years. Frank and another engineer formed a partnership in a mechanical engineering firm. In 1994 they expanded to include electrical engineering. Frank retired in 1996 and moved to Arizona, settling in the community of SaddleBrooke. He was a member of several engineering societies and a Registered Engineer in several states. Frank and Betty visited family and friends in Albuquerque frequently. He enjoyed golf, traveling and reading. Services will be held in October. TAPIA -- Augustine G. Tapia , 85, of Albuquerque, beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend, passed away on Friday, September 17, 2010, while surrounded by his loving family. Born and raised in New Mexico, Mr. Tapia proudly served his country during WWII , in the 346th infantry company, United States Army. He was preceded in death by his loving wife , Antonia Tapia; and son-in-law Richard Lucero. Augustine is survived by his loving family, children, Tillie Lucero, Charlotte (Raymond) Thomen, Larry(Isabel) Tapia and Leonard (Norma) Tapia; grandchildren, Richard Lucero , Carmelita Lucero, Alicia Tapia, Abran Tapia( Margo Padilla) and Gabriela Tapia; great-grandchildren, Isabel Gurule and Scarlet Tapia; sisters, Eva (Raymond) Casias and Eleanor Barreras. He will be greatly missed by his family and by those whose hearts he touched. TAPIA -- Carol Jean "Jeanie" Tapia passed away quietly at her home with loved ones on Wednesday morning, Sept, 15th, 2010. Jeanie was born November 28, 1955 in Gallup, NM and was proud to call NM her home for most of her life. She is survived by her two daughters, Bernadette Gabrys and Jolene Gutierrez; her long time love, Allen Wade; her six granchildren, Tarah, Ashley and Melissa Gabrys, and Alex, Dominic and Jonathan Gutierrez; her sons-in-law, Walter Gabrys and Anthony Gutierrez; as well as three siblings; and several neices and nephews. Jeanie always had a positive attitude and was always willing to lend a hand or her last dollar to anyone that needed it more than her. She was a loving and forgiving woman that has taught us all how to live and love. She will be greatly missed and forever in our hearts. WILKIRSON -- Martell Wilkirson, 84, died Wednesday, September 15, 2010. Martell was born in Kokomo, Indiana on November 30, 1925. She moved to Albuquerque in 1950. Martell was predeceased by her son, Pete Wilkirson; her sisters, Enaz Hoppes and Mimi Heitzman; and her parents, Pete and Viola Lambert. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, William B. Wilkirson; son, Adam Wilkirson and his wife Tina; daughter, Karen Wilkirson and her partner, Cathy Sierra; sister, Eulalia Taffe; grandchildren, Ryan Wilkirson, Jacob Wilkirson, Casey Guilfoyle, and Mimi Sierra-Wilkirson; many nieces and nephews; and her loving caregivers, Janelle, Rianna, and Vicky. Martell loved to travel, golf, and play cards. She was generous, thoughtful, fun-loving, and devoted to her family. YOUNG -- Olga Young, 97, of Albuquerque, passed away peacefully at The Cottages Senior Living Center on September 16, 2010, after suffering for many years with Alzheimer's Disease. Olga was born in Chicago Heights, Illinois on November 3, 1912, to Italian immigrant parents, Anselmo Maoloni and Enrica Paoletti, both from Monteprandone, Italy. She was the third of five children. Olga grew up in Matteson, Illinois and attended Thornton Township Junior College and then the University of Illinois, graduating in 1935. While at the University she met her future husband, Robert Young, who later became known for his work as a Navajo linguist, when they both took a Spanish class studying Don Quixote. Olga taught school in Illinois for several years and then married Robert on December 30, 1939. After her marriage she moved to the Southwest, living first in Arizona and then New Mexico. Olga was a devoted wife and mother, an avid gardener, and a lady of great warmth and generosity. She never lost sight of her Italian heritage, maintained close ties with her family in Illinois, and retained her ability as an adult to speak her first language. Olga's husband preceded her in death in 2007. She is survived by her daughter, Linda Sue, of Albuquerque. Funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday, September 22, 2010, 10:00 a.m., at Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, 5310 Claremont NE.
