Obituary for ROONEY

Patrick Joseph Rooney, 82, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, died September 17, 2010, at St. John's Rehabilitation Facility in Albuquerque, with his daughters Anne and Sheila, and his long time friend and former wife, Mara Rooney at his side, after battling a long illness. Patrick, the second of six children, was born November 24, 1927, to Patrick and Elizabeth Rooney at Kiltyclogher, County Leitrim, Ireland. He immigrated to the United States in 1948 and joined the US Army in September 1950, where he served his chosen country with distinction during the Korean Conflict. He moved to Albuquerque in 1953. He worked for many years for the Public Service Company of New Mexico, as well as at Kirtland Air Force Base. He is survived by a sister, Margaret O'Hara, of Melbourne, Australia, a brother, Francis Rooney, of Yonkers, New York, a son, Patrick Francis Rooney, of Broomfield, Colorado, daughters Anne Elizabeth White and Sheila Marie Rooney of Albuquerque, a son, Michael Ray Rooney, of Albuquerque, and seven grandchildren. He enjoyed participating in Veterans of Foreign War as well as American Legion Activities, and was an avid hiker in the Sandia foothills. In lieu of flowers, his family requests that donations be made to the St. Johns Rehabilitation Center, or the St. Vincent De Paul Society. A funeral in Patrick's honor will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 21, 2010, at John XXIII Catholic Church, 4831 Tramway Ridge Dr NE in Albuquerque. Interment will follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
