ARCHULETA -- FRANK JR. Our dear Frank Archuleta, Jr. was called by Our Lord on Saturday, June 16, 2007. He was born in Cuba, NM on February 10, 1934 and was a resident of Albuquerque. He was an active member of the First Spanish Baptist Church. Frank is survived by two daughters, Marcella and husband, Gilbert Rodriguez, Jr. and Patricia Archuleta; three brothers, J. Vicente Archuleta and wife, Elsie, Prospero Archuleta and wife, Inez, and Richard Archuleta; sister-in-law, Sally Archuleta; three sisters, Josephine Gutierrez, Prescilla Ramirez, and Annie and husband, Gilbert Montes; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Pallbearers will be Prospero Archuleta, Richard Archuleta, Aaron Garcia, David Montes, Anthony Archuleta, and Mike Ramirez. Honorary Pallbearers will be Gilbert Rodriguez Jr., Vicente Archuleta, Albert Archuleta, Juan D. Candelaria III, and George Montoya. Frank was always willing to help and comfort people in need. He was witty and was always joking and making people laugh. He will be greatly missed. BENTON -- Leontine "Tina" Marie Benton, 88, passed away peacefully in her home on Monday, June 2007. A resident of Albuquerque for 61 years, she was born in Dallas, TX on May 18, 1919. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Bruce; son, Jim, of Auburn, WA; daughters, Peggy and husband, Wayne Lipps, of Napa, CA, Barbara and husband, Fred Ellis, of Santa Fe, NM, Sylvia and husband, Eric Livingston, of Washington, DC, and Teresa and husband, Mark Campbell, of San Pedro, CA; grandchildren, Holly Lacey, Amanda Wilson, Ryan Ellis, Rachel Ellis, Austin Campbell, and Margaret Campbell; great-grandchild, Adrienne Lacey; and sisters, Betsy Davis and Nancy Ladowski. Tina was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Peggy and Madaline; and brothers, Bruce, Chuck, and Joe. After graduating from North Dallas High School, she attended Southern Methodist University on scholarship. She married Bruce Benton on March 6, 1943 while he was stationed in the Army Air Corps at Love Field. They moved to Albuquerque in 1946. She was the ultimate multi-tasking mother and homemaker devoting herself to her husband and children and their many and varied activities. She loved her family and was especially fond of her grandchildren and great-granddaughter. She retired from the University of New Mexico as the Associate Director for Research. She was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, New Mexico Retired Educators, and Daughters of the American Revolution. After retiring, she gave generously of her time, volunteering at the North Valley Senior Center. Cooking, gardening, traveling and photography were her favorite pastimes. Cremation has taken place. A Mass and Memorial Service will be held at the chapel at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 7999 Wyoming Blvd. NE on Friday, June 29, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the University of New Mexico Children's Hospital. BERRY -- Frances Wilson, a lifelong resident of Albquerque, NM passed away on Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at the age of 81. Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Thomas Berry and her parents, Coach FM Wilson and Ruth Wison of Albuq. She was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be missed greatly by both family and friends. She is survived by her daughter, Janet and son-in-law, Edward Beltz; her grandson, Edward Thomas Beltz; granddaughters, Christy Smith and husband, Donald Smith; and Shannon Bletz as well as five great-grandchildren. CHAKERIAN -- Florence Chakerian Born January 21, 1918 in Boston, of Armenian immigrants, resident of Albuquerque since 1940, passed away June 18, 2007. Preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Jerry Chakerian. Beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, in-law, and friend. To those who knew and loved her, she embodied boundless curiosity and devotion to social justice. Her joy with each new day taught those around her to embrace life. There will be no service at her request, but her memory can be honored by making donations to animal or humanitarian organizations. We shall miss her.

CHASE-WINSTIN -- Joyce Chase-Winstin, 85, of Albuquerque passed away June 21, 2007 after a long illness. She is survived by three daughters, Mary Etta McLane, Johnneye Jeffres, and Jill Winstin; two sons, James Patrick Chase and Jack Chase; five grandchildren, Amanda, Sara, Jamee, Adam, and Brandi; nine great-grandchildren. Joyce was preceded in death by two husbands, James A. Chase and Boris Winstin. Joyce graduated from nursing school in Milwaukee, WI; she and her family then moved to Albuquerque in 1961. She was a dedicated nurse in the greater Albuquerque area serving in both hospital and private practices until her retirement in 1987. COMBS -- Robert S. "Bob" Combs, 84, a resident of Albuquerque since 1970, died peacefully at home, Wednesday, June 20, 2007. He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Julia Cocks Combs; children, Bobbi Boldon of Denver, CO, Dan Brennan-Combs and wife, Mari of Glenwood Springs, CO, Sharon Combs of Denver, Lee King and husband, Jerry of Albuquerque, Debbie Cook of Austin, TX, David Bedwell of Sequin, TX; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and sister, Norma Howard of Miles City, MT. Mr. Combs was preceded in death by his first wife, Joyce Combs; second wife, Polly Combs; son, Randy Combs, and daughter, Rita Barrett. Bob was a grateful member of Alcoholics Anonymous with over 38 years sobriety. He had owned and operated Combs Auto Parts in Cedar Crest. He served as a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force, the U.S. Army Air Corps and the U.S. Air Force in both World War II and the Korean Conflict. First Lt. Combs was awarded the Silver Star. D'AGOSTINO -- Carl Joseph D'Agostino, age 93 and a resident of New Mexico for 74 years, died on Wednesday, June 20, 2007 in Portales, NM, following an illness. Carl was born July 16, 1913 in Schenectady, NY to the late Rufo and Annunziata (Bonhommo) D'Agostino. Carl is survived by his wife of 73 years, Emily Fraissinet D'Agostino of Portales; three sons, Carl J. D'Agostino Jr. and wife, Evelyn of Orangevale, CA, James P. D'Agostino and wife, Bernice of Portales, and Paul R. D'Agostino and wife, Alice of Albuquerque; brother, Rev. Fr. Joseph P. D'Agostino of NY; sister, Helen O'Brien and husband, Joe of VA; 13 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. In 1933 Carl moved to Socorro, NM to attend what was then known as New Mexico School of Mines. It was there he meet the love of his life and future bride Emily. They were married on April 16, 1934 in Socorro. After serving in the U.S. Army during WW II Carl returned to Socorro where he became the Postmaster, a job he held until his retirement in 1972. Carl and Emily lived in Socorro until 1993 when they moved to Albuquerque. In March of 2007 they moved to Portales to live with James and Bernice. Carl was a devout Catholic and a life time member of the Knights of Columbus where he was a 4th degree Knight in the Belen Council. A viewing and visitation will be held Sunday, June 24, 2007 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Steadman-Hall Funeral Home, 309 Garfield Socorro, NM. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. in San Miguel Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, June 25, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. in San Miguel Catholic Church with Fr. DURAN -- Casey S. Duran, 92, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on Tuesday, June 19, 2007. Casey was born in Duran, NM. He retired from the Air Force as a Chief Master Sergeant after 23 years and later worked for Civil Service at Kirtland AFB for 15 years. Casey's greatest satisfaction came from caring for his parents until their death. He was a loyal fan of the UNM Lobos basketball and football and he attended all the games; he loved his flowers and enjoyed working in his yard. Casey is survived by his two sisters, Bessie Duran of San Diego and Ida Garcia and husband, Robert of Albuquerque; several cousins; 27 nieces and nephews; numerous great-nieces and nephews, and many, many friends. HAINES -- BENJAMIN HILL Dr. Benjamin Hill Haines, a Las Cruces oral surgeon, died Wednesday afternoon at his Las Cruces home of over 50 years. A native of the Mesilla Valley, Dr. Haines was born February 24, 1917, at Hill, NM, a small village established by his mother's family. Dr. Haines joined the Medical Detachment of the 120th Engineers, commanded by the well remembered Dr. Robert E. McBride while still in high school. Dr. McBride established the first hospital in Las Cruces. He attended New Mexico State University and received his dental degree from the University of Southern California. He was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon social fraternity, Delta Sigma Delta dental fraternity and Alpha Tau Epsilon, the honorary dental fraternity of U.S.C. After graduation from U.S.C., Dr. Haines established his practice in Las Cruces in 1941. During World War II, Dr. Haines served as a U.S. Army dental officer from 1942 until 1946. He received the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with bronze stars for New Guinea, the Northern Solomon and the Western Pacific. Dr. Haines also received the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, World War II Victory Medal, and the American Theater Service Medal. During the Korean conflict, Dr. Haines again served as a dental officer with the Army from 1950 to 1952. Then, for the third time, he began his civilian practice in Las Cruces. Dr. Haines was very active in professional, civic and church work. He had been a member of 14 different professional organizations including The American Dental Association, The American College of Dentists,The Rocky Mountain society of Oral Surgeons, The New Mexico Dental Association and the Southwest District Dental Society. He was a Past President of The New Mexico Dental Association, Past President of the New Mexico State Board of Dental Examiners, and a three-time Past President of The Dona Ana County Dental Society. He was the first dentist to become a member of the Active Staff of Memorial General Hospital. He received this appointment, with unlimited privileges in oral surgery in 1960. On May 31, 1966, Dr. Haines was appointed to the Building committee of the new Memorial General Hospital, which opened on July 22, 1971. This was particularly significant in his life as Las Cruces had no hospital while he was growing up. The high point of Dr. Haines' professional career occurred in 1960 when he became the seventh New Mexico dentist to become a Fellow of the American college of Dentists (FACD). Dr. Haines has had numerous scientific articles published in the United States, South America, and in Europe. He also presented a paper before the scientific session of The American Dental Association in Philadelphia in 1961. Requests for reprints of his articles have been received from all over the world. For a number of years Dr. Haines was an active member of The Rotary Club. He was also the Past President of The 20 - 30 Club, and Founding President of the first Toastmasters Club of Las Cruces. In 1964, Dr. Haines was President of the Men of Saint James' Episcopal Church in Mesilla Park, NM, an organization he helped found. He was a licensed lay reader St. James and served several times as a member of the Vestry of that Church. As part of his continued work with the Church, he met with the Bishops of both the Episcopal and Roman Catholic churches to develop and establish the first joint retreat of the two Churches in the United States. This retreat took place in 1964 at the Holy Cross Retreat, Mesilla Park. Dr. Haines served as Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Dona Ana County from 1984 through his retirement in 1987 He had been a member of that board since 1961. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Julia Gifford Haines; his four sons with their wives, Ben H. Haines Jr. and Sandra Herkenhoff, Edward Morris and Nyeta LaDon Haines, Brian Douglas and Lilly Caballero Haines, and Brandon Hill and Nance Kells Haines; as well as his two granddaughters, Laura Sue Haines and Cynthia Elaine Reynolds; his niece, Dory West; and his nephew, Lee E. Haines, Jr. A viewing for Dr. Haines will be held at Graham's Mortuary Chapel located at 555 W. Amador Avenue this Sunday, June 24, 2007 from 4 to 6 p.m. with a guided evening prayer to be conducted at 5 p.m. Services will be held Monday morning, June 25, 2007 at 10 a.m. at Saint James' Episcopal Church in Mesilla Park, NM with interment to follow at Masonic Cemetery in Las Cruces. HECKMAN -- William O. Heckman, 85, a resident of Albuquerque for nearly 20 years, passed away on Wednesday, June 20, 2007. He is survived by his wife, Marilynn Cooper; his son, William Frederic Heckman and daughter-in-law, Margaret; and daughter, Ann Elizabeth Riggs and son-in-law, Bob; seven special grandchildren; sisters, Eleanor H. Mooney and Margaret Sherman; and many other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by Opal, his first wife and mother of his children. He was born July 7, 1921 in State College, PA. The family moved to New Jersey where he grew up and graduated from Asbury Park High School. Bill enlisted in the United States Army in 1942 and was commissioned February 12, 1943. His military service during WWII was unique in that he served in both the European and Pacific Theaters. Honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant in 1946, he went on to earn his BA from Rutgers University in 1947, and an MA from Columbia University in 1948. Bill's lengthy career in higher education included 30 years as an English Professor at Fullerton College in California. A friend and mentor to his students throughout his life, Bill supported many organizations including the United Nations Association, League of Women Voters and the Democratic party. MALDONADO -- Joseph Augustin Maldonado 1917 - 2007. On June 3, 2007 Joe (Augie) Maldonado went home to join his wife, Vera with our Lord. He was pre-deceased by Vera in 2004 and his elder son, David Michael in 2006. He is survived by his son, Thomas E. Maldonado (Lydia) of Tustin, CA; granddaughter, Tamara (Mark) Rowe; great-granddaughters, Tayler and Temre Wroge of Orange, CA and his brother, Fred Maldonado of Springer, New Mexico. Born in Dawson, New Mexico, Joe spent his yourger years in Colfax County, New Mexico as a rancher, farmer, and coal miner. He retired from Albuquerque's Sandia Corporation in 1981. Joe will be remembered as a true gentleman, tough and rugged but fair, honest and compassionate. A devoted family man whose wife and sons took precedence over all else in his life. Daughter-in-law, Lydia is arranging a celebration of Joe's life on June 27, 2007 at the family home in Tustin, California.

MOORE -- Walter F. Moore a resident of Albuquerque and Belen, died Wednesday, June 20, 2007. He is survived by his sisters, Kathryn De Masters of Belen, NM and Leona Allen of Woodburn, OR, and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Moore was preceded in death by his wife, Eileen Moore. He was a lifelong member of both the D.A.V. and the American Legion, as well as a member of the Elks Lodge #461. Walter was an accomplished wood carver and cowboy artist. PETERSON -- Lester Warren "Pete" Peterson, 96, passed away June 16, 2007 in Albuquerque, NM. He was born July 28, 1910 in Philadelphia, PA, to Warren and Margaret Peterson, and was a resident of Albuquerque since 2001. Pete was a longtime member of the Masonic Lodge and the United Autoworkers Union, as well as a founder and board member of Fabulous Felines Cat Rescue Charity. He is survived by two daughters, Merry Stubblefield and her husband, William of Albuquerque, NM, and Patricia Weir and her husband, Arthur of Philadelphia, PA; five grandchildren, Patty Lynn LaBadie, Richard LaBadie, Glenn LaBadie, Patti Gail Weir, and Arthur Weir; and many great- and great-great-grandchildren. Pete was preceded in death by his wife of many years, Bertha J. Peterson. He leaves behind his dear feline companion, Anastasia. PLUNKETT -- THOMAS J. Col. Thomas J. Plunkett, USA, (Ret.), 86, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, passed away Tuesday, June 19, 2007. He is survived by his son, Thomas W. Plunkett and wife, Theresa of Albuquerque; one grandson, Thomas J. "T.J." Plunkett; and many friends. Col. Plunkett was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy Plunkett, in 2001 and his parents, Thomas W. and Lena M. Plunkett. He was born on May 14, 1921, in Albuquerque and graduated from St. Mary's High School and the University of New Mexico with a B.B.A. Degree in Business Administration. Col. Plunkett was a member of PHI Kappa Alpha. After graduation he went to work for the armed forces Special Weapons Project and from there he went to the Atomic Energy Commission. He proudly served during WWII, the Korean Conflict, Vietnam and Desert Storm. During that time he worked for the Reserve Program where he commanded two groups and ten battalions. During WW II he served in the Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron in the India and Burma Theater. After his retirement, Col Plunkett served in the army reserves. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in 1969 and the Legion of Merit in 1975 for exceptional meritorious service as Commander, 156th Support Group, in Albuquerque. Col. Plunkett was a loving father and grandfather and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Friends may visit French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel, on Sunday, June 24, 2007, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at the Shrine of St. Bernadette, 11401 Indian School Rd. NE, Monday, June 25, 2007, 9:00 a.m. with Father Norbert Choong, Celebrant. Interment will follow at 11:30 a.m.. at Santa Fe National Cemetery. ROYBAL -- Isidro Roybal, 83, born in Los Colonias to Eliseo and Rosenda Roybal, died Thursday, June 21, 2007. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Emma Velasquez Roybal; his children, Robert Roybal and wife, Karen, Carmen Palya and Mary "Tay" Gallegos and husband, Garry; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; brother, Jake Roybal; sisters, Carmen Vigil and Josie Sandoval and husband, Leroy; and many other family members. Isidro was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Rose Marie Rovelli. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather as well a teacher and friend to his family. Mr. Roybal served his country during WW II in the U.S. Navy on the USS California. IZZY was a recipient of several medals including the Purple Heart. He was a member of Queen of Heaven Parish. Mr. Roybal received his Bachelor's Degree at NM Highlands University and his Master's Degree at the University of New Mexico. Rosary will be recited Sunday, June 24, 2007, 5:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, with visitation one hour prior to Rosary. STAHULAK -- Nora Ann Stahulak, courageously went into the loving arms of our Lord June 20, 2007. Nora was preceded in death by her brother, Israel Luna and Grandmother, Juanita Luna. She was born October 23, 1966 in Houston, TX. She is survived by her husband, Robert and beloved sons, David and Ryan, father, Fidel Luna and wife, Adela, mother, Gerarda Cordoba and Jose Orozco; sisters, Cynthia Rosas and Robert, Rachel Lucero and Peter, Evangeline Mclean and Omar Lucero; brothers, Michael Luna and Monica, James Luna, Fidel Luna and Bronwyn, several nieces and nephews, and numerous cousins. Nora was a graduate of Del Notre High School in 1984. She was a teacher's aide at Montezuma Elementary, were she loved her students as did they love her. Nora taught all of us what strengthen and faith is all about. She will be remembered for her teddy bears, her photography, and her sincerity and thoughtfulness. She will be missed by all. A viewing will be held Thursday, June 21, 2007 at 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Riverside Chapel. A Rosary on Friday June 22 at 7:00 p.m. at Queen of Heaven Parish. THOMPSON -- Owen Locke Lear "Tommy" Thompson, age 79, passed away peacefully in the hospital on June 19, 2007, after suffering an accident. He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty years, Frances Starnes Thompson, and two brothers, Otto A. Thompson and William O. Thompson of Monroeville, AL. He is survived by his son, Blake A. Thompson of Albuquerque and Denver, CO; and his dear nephew and nieces, Otto A. Thompson, Jr., of Tokyo, Japan, Sally Misner, of Cottonwood Heights, UT, and Vicki Broadus-Owens, of Monroeville, AL; and extended family. Tommy, or Locke as he was known in his hometown, grew up during the Depression in a financially-strapped but loving home, working a variety of jobs to help out. He joined the military upon his eighteenth birthday in 1946, serving in the occupation forces in Japan. He left the army and attended Troy State University in Alabama before being called back to active duty at the start of the Korean War. Through success in aptitude testing and training programs, Tommy advanced through the enlisted ranks to become a Special Agent of Military Intelligence and earn an officer's commission. He served in Korea and Vietnam, and commanded the Military Intelligence units in New York and Vermont before retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1970. Tommy met Fran in Albuquerque in 1952, where she worked for the Dept. of Defense. They married a couple of years later and their son, Blake was born in 1961. After Tommy retired from the military, they moved to Albuquerque, their adopted home. Tommy began working in real estate, specializing in vacant land, and built his company, Tommy Thompson Realty, developing a reputation for honesty and integrity, values that governed his entire life. Tommy was also active in the ballooning community, working as a crew chief for numerous pilots and serving on the board of the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta for many years. Tommy never considered fully retiring, remaining active in his business through his final day. He loved meeting new people, had countless friends and acquaintances, and he always looked for ways to help others. His good cheer, generosity, supportive nature, and great compassion will be dearly missed by all those who knew him. A Memorial Service for the deceased will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, June 27, 2007 at Asbury Methodist Church, 10000 Candelaria NE, Albuquerque, NM 87112, (505) 299-0643. WATKINS -- Dickerson R. Watkins, a resident of Albuquerque, died Tuesday, June 19, 2007. He was born November 7, 1923 in Santa Rita, NM, a small mining community, no longer in existence. Those born in Santa Rita are now referred to as having "been born in space." The family moved to Santa Barbara, Chihuahua in the Republic of Mexico in 1924, and lived throughout Mexico for thirty years. Mr. Watkins attended high school at Texas Military Institute boarding school in San Antonio, Texas. After one year of college at Texas A & M, he enlisted in the Navy in 1942, and served in the 7th Battalion USNC (Seabees). He served in the Aleutian Islands and on the Island of Okinawa and was discharged from the Navy in 1946. Returning from the war he entered the University of Texas where he met and married Winifred I. Varnon. Upon graduation from college in 1949 with a degree in Petroleum Geology, he returned to Mexico where he spent eight years with a British company in San Francisco del Oro, Chihuahua. Due to lack of facilities to educate his four children in San Francisco del Oro, the family returned to the United States where Dick worked for several years in the potash mines of Carlsbad, New Mexico, later, starting his own mining supply business in Albuquerque. Mr. Watkins retired at age 66, petitioned Masonic Albuquerque Lodge No. 60 and served as Master and Secretary of his Lodge. He belonged to the Albuquerque York Rite bodies and served as Grand Commander and Grand Master, Secretary, Recorder, and Treasurer. He was serving as Grand High Priest at the time of his death. He was a member of the Ballut Abyad Shrine, Scottish Rite, Desert Rose Chapter No. 70 of Eastern Star, and served as Master of Albuquerque Memorial Lodge No. 1. He served as Governor in the New Mexico York Rite College No. 145 and received the Order of the Purple Cross. He was Intendant General for the Red Cross of Constantine for the State of New Mexico and was currently serving as Secretary, Recorder, and Registrar for six various York Rite bodies. Mr. Watkins was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church and a volunteer blood donor for over 60 years, having donated over 20 gallons of blood during his lifetime. He is survived by his wife, Win, with whom he celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary on April 10, 2007, his children, Diane Murray and her husband, Richard, of California; Cynthia Lee and her husband, Bruce, of Phoenix; Cory Watkins of Denver; and adopted son, David, of Albuquerque; brother, Larry M. Watkins and his wife, Martha, of Arizona; their four sons; a niece, Pam; two granddaughters; and two step-grandsons. Mr. Watkins was preceded in death by his son, Dickerson R. ZIMMERMAN -- Mary Sue Zimmerman, 84, was a resident of Albuquerque until Thursday, June 21, 2007, when she was called home by the Lord. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints, she had great faith in the promise of being reunited with her family in heaven. The world has now lost some sweetness with her passing and she will be greatly missed by all. Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Bobby L. Zimmerman; brothers William Adolph Hopper and G.W. Hopper; sisters Sally, Rae, and Linda Jeanne; niece, Tamara; and nephew, William Curtis. Mary is survived by a brother, Bobby Dale Hopper of Camden, AR; a daughter Cheryl Lynn Beecher and husband, Everett "Sonny" of Albuquerque; son, Robert Rory Zimmerman of Albuquerque; granddaughter, Cheri "Jay" Zimmerman of Albuquerque; she has numerous nieces and nephews in many states and was especially close to niece, Chas L. Frazer of Livermore, CA. Mary served in the Army during WWII and Korea and was honorably discharged.
