Duran -- Apolonio"Apples"¯ Duran, a life long resident of San Miguel County, passed away at the Rio Rancho Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Rio Rancho, NM on Thursday. He was 96 years old. He was born in Chaperito, New Mexico on December 13, 1905 to the late Simon and Andrea Sena Duran.¯As a young man, Mr. Duran worked for various business stores.¯He was a prominent Democrat and began his political career in 1938 when the San Miguel County Chairman Seferino Quintana appointed him to manage the county democratic headquarters.¯This led to his career such as caseworker for the Department of Human Services, a librarian and truant officer for the county schools, maintenance supervisor for the New Mexico Highway Department, a representative for the Bureau of Revenue, a field man for the State Land Office, and County Deputy Sheriff.¯For over a half of a century, Mr. Duran figured prominently in city, state, and federal politics.¯He was elected County School Superintendent and served two terms as the County Assessor.¯Late in his career he was appointed by the governor as Director of the New Mexico Drivers License Bureau, the N. M. Border Commission, Chief Administrative Officer for the N. M. State Hospital, and a board member of the Retired Public Employees of New Mexico. Mr. Duran was County Chairman for the Democratic Party for 15 years, and treasured the memory of helping nominate John F. Kennedy for President of the United States while a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in 1959. After retirement, Mr. Duran was constantly sought after for political advise and counsel from those seeking elective offices. He was particularly proud that although he had many political opportunities for personal gain, he and his wife Lena always chose never to unfairly profit from the public trust. Besides his¯ parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Lena on May 23, 1991. He is survived by five sons, Donald Duran of Albuquerque, NM and Joe Duran and his wife Roberta of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, Henry Duran and his wife Theresa and Tommie Duran and his wife Harriett all of Albuquerque and Dennis Duran and Agnes Claus of Las Vegas, Nevada; five daughters including Inez Ramos and her husband Louis of San Lorenzo, California, Dolores Ahrens and her husband Stuart of Greensboro, North Carolina, Delia and Larry Chavez Rio Rancho and Las Vegas, New Mexico, Viola Welter and her husband Willie of San Diego, California, and Margaret Maese and her husband Elmo of Las Vegas, New Mexico; one sister, Vera Stackpole of Albuquerque, New Mexico; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandson, nieces and nephews.¯He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Las Vegas. A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. in St. Francis Chapel at Gonzales Funerals & Cremations, 2315 Hot Springs Blvd. in Las Vegas.¯A rosary will be recited Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. from Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Las Vegas. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. from the Immaculate Conception Church in Las Vegas by Father C. John Brasher.¯The interment will follow in Mt. Hunter -- Walter W. Hunter, 81, resident of North Liberty, IA, died Wednesday, November 6, 2002, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 11, 2002, at the Solon United Methodist Church, Solon, Iowa. Burial will be in the Lisbon Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, at Lensing's Oak Hill, Coralville, Iowa. Memorial may be made to Hospice of Iowa City. Walter is survived by his wife, Janice of North Liberty; two daughters, Kristen Kay Simon and her husband, Steve, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Karen Lee Norvell of Henderson, Nevada; four grandchildren, Jeremy, Benjamin, Payton, and Emily.

Weiler -- H.J."Doc" Weiler, 86, a resident since 1960, died Friday, October 25, 2002. He is survived by his loving wife, Lena, of 58 years, daughters, Ann Rhoades and husband Russell of Albuquerque, Caroline Harrington and husband Gary of Las Cruces, NM, Cindy Stehle and husband Bill of Denver, Co, and Elaine Geoghegan and husband Joe of Scottsdale, AZ; son, Greg Weiler and wife Mona of Rowlette, TX, and daughter-in-law, Dane Weiler of Albuquerque; his grandchildren, great-grandchildren; a sister, two brothers, many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his sons, Jim and Jeff Weiler, brother, James Weiler and parents, Nora and Jacob Weiler. He was born and raised in Burlington, Wisconsin, where he graduated from St. Mary's High School. He earned a bachelors degree at St. Mary's College in Winona, Minnesota and a Law Degree from Marquette University. During WWII he served as a US Navy Pilot. He returned to Burlington and practiced Law in Wisconsin for 16 years before venturing west to New Mexico in 1960. He was the Executive Director of Association of Commerce and Industry for 17 years. He continued as a Lobbyist until his death. He was actively involved in passing SEAT BELT LEGISLATION and numerous critical legislative issues and laws. He was Chairman of Safer New Mexico Now and New Mexico Highway Users Association, and a member of VFW Post #401 and American Legion Post 49. His love of New Mexico is evident in the legislation he supported to make New Mexico a better place to live for all New Mexicans. Prayer Service and Celebration of Life will be held at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel on Tuesday, October 29, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. with Deacon Denis Simon reciting. The Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 30, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Bernadette's Catholic Church, 11401 Indian School Rd. NE with Father Rollins Lambert and Deacon Al McLane Celebrating. Zulema -- Nichols, age 92, passed away September 26, 2002 at the Guadalupe County Hospital in Santa Rosa following an extended illness. Zulema was born February 12, 1910 in Santa Rosa to the home of Simon Serrano Sr. and Petrita Chavez Serrano. She was reared and attended schools in Santa Rosa. Zulema married Thomas Nichols June 3, 1950 in Santa Rosa. She had been a resident of Los Amigos Nursing Center since December 31, 2001. Zulema was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church where she was involved in the Altar Society, a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of America Court 2276, Prayer Group, Marriage Enrichment, Cursillo, she sang in different church choirs, she was a Eucharistic Minister in church as well as the shut ins and the hospital, a lecturer and commentator and a founding member of the SEARCH program. Not only was Zulema active in her Church but also in her community. She was an original member of the Los Amigos Nursing Home Board, she was Secretery-Treasurer for the St.Joseph Cemetery Association for many years, she served as a bailiff and a translator for the court system, and a member of the Bridge Club. Zulema also made time for work as she worked for various restaurants in Santa Rosa such as Letties Restaurant and the Adobe Inn Restaurant, she also worked for the County Nurse, Post Office, Power Plant, Teeter's Department Store, Parish Secretery, Chamber of Commerce Secretary, OPA and even as a DJ for KSYX AM Radio. She enjoyed embroidering, crocheting, reading and music. Zulema is preceded in death by her parents; her first husband Benerito Baros; her second husband Horacio Maritinez; her grandson Robert Ramon Campos; her brother and sister Eslinda Sanchez and Luciano Serrano; sister in laws Margie Serrano, Mary Serrano and Toni Serrano; Brother in laws Napoleon Romo and Speedy Sanchez. Survivors include her husband Thomas Nichols of Santa Rosa; her daughters Mary Belle Baros Lucero and husband Samuel of Rio Rancho, Ida Jo Baros Campos and husband Albert of Santa Rosa; her grandchildren Karl Lucero of Rio Rancho, Paula Domniguez and husband Tim of Rio Rancho, Pete Campos and wife Lori of Las Vegas, Tommy Campos and wife Barbara, Lettie Chavez and husband Abel, Albert Campos, Jr. and wife Brenda all of Santa Rosa, Brothers and sister Adolph Serrano of Santa Rosa, Simon Serrano and wife Pita of Albuquerque, Luis Serrano and wife Dulce of Santa Rosa, Zolio Serrano and wife Vickie of Albuquerque, Frank Serrano and wife Ofelia of Woodland, Texas, Robert Serrano of Santa Rosa, Charles Serrano and wife Angie of Santa Rosa and Alice Romo of 0Dallas, Texas. Also surviving are 17 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild and numerous nieces;7 nephews and a host of relatives and friends. Rosary services will be held on Sunday evening at 7:00 from St. Rose of Lima Church in Santa Rosa. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday afternoon at 1:00 also from St. Rose Church. Lucero -- Vince"Froggy" Lucero, 32, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on Friday, September 13, 2002.¯Vince was a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, and was retired from the City of Albuquerque Liquid Waste Department. He loved his family, 69 Camaro, the Dallas Cowboys, and was known for never saying no. Vince was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Virginia Lucero. Vince is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughter, Nicole; son, Matthew; father-in-law, Charlie Gurule; mother-in-law, Virginia Francia; brother, Danny Lucero; sisters, Esther Garcia, Sybil Chavez and husband, Leroy, and Marie Gutierrez and husband, Offie; niece, Shirley Lucero; five nephews; Godson, Marc Lucero; uncles, aunts, numerous other family and friends that loved and will miss him.¯Services will be held at Nativity of Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, located at 4th Street and Alameda NW. Hernandez -- Pete C. Hernandez, died peacefully among his loving and adoring family on Thursday, September 12, 2002. He was born in Alamogordo on December 4, 1927. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Cordelia Hernandez; daughter, Gloria Koury and husband, Jerry of Tucson, AZ; son, Chris Hernandez and wife, Lucia of Edgewood; daughter, Teresa Godfrey and husband, Bryan of Albuquerque and Elena Hernandez of Phoenix, AZ; grandsons, Alex Koury of Denver, CO and Peter Koury of Tucson, AZ; sister, Pilar Llamas and husband, Joe of Albuquerque; and nephews, Joe and David of Albuquerque. He was preceded in death by his father, Simon Hernandez in 1950 and mother, Feliciana Hernandez in 1997. Mr. Hernandez was valedictorian of his graduating class at Alamogordo High School in 1945. Pete served as a soldier in the United States Army and was later called to return to service in the U.S. Reserve Corps where he served a year in Pusan, Korea during the Korean War. Upon being honorably discharged from the service, Pete attended the University of New Mexico on the GI Bill and graduated in 1953 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He later worked toward his Master's Degree in electrical engineering at night school. Upon graduation he was hired at Sandia Laboratories where he worked in computer applications until retirement in 1992. Pete was a member of Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church, and a member of the Knights of Columbus as a 4th degree Knight. Pete was also a member of Toastmasters International where he enjoyed presenting humorous and inspiring speeches, and won many awards for his speeches. He enjoyed horse racing, sporting events, working on computers and spending time with his grandsons. Pete will be remembered for his loving patience, understanding of others, and his sense of humor. He will be missed as a strong and influential presence in the lives of his family. May he be forever with the Lord. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Rosary will be recited Friday, September 13, 2002, 7:00 p.m., at Our Lady of The Assumption Catholic Church, Lomas and Tennessee NE. Morton -- Ancil Guy "Morty" Morton, age 89, died Saturday, August 31, 2002 born August 31, 1913 in Dennis, TX. He was the last surviving child of seven. He was preceded in death by his parents, father, Homer Guy Morton and mother, Effie Lee Taff. He retired from the U.S. Navy as a Chief Warrant Officer second class after 22 years. He served in World War II in the Pacific Theater of Operations. After the Navy, he worked for the employment Security Commission of New Mexico as an appeals referee. Ancil retire after 16 years. Ancil also received an Associate's Degree in real estate from the University of Albuquerque. He and his wife, Nedra were fellow founders of the Chaparral Bulldog Club of New Mexico. Ancil was a handler and breeder of many champion English Bulldogs. Ancil is survived by his daughter, Barbara Gayle Debenport of Ft. Worth, TX; his son, Guy Frederick Morton and his wife, Michele Taylor-Morton of Albuquerque. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Lorin Douglas Long, his wife, Debbie and three children, Stephanie Cook, Amberly Long, and Jordan Long, Joel Robin Long, his wife, Sarah and three children, Spencer, Simon, and Barbara Greer Long, Julai Anne Maas and husband, Travis, Christine Marie Soulsby and husband, Josh, Tamara Gayle Utsler, husband, Jeremy and great-grandson, Brian Pickens. Saiz -- Mr. Joe F. Saiz died Monday, September 2, 2002 in Albuquerque at the age of 69. Mr. Saiz was a member of the American Legion Post 69 Mounted Patrol. He is survived by his wife, La Nora Saiz; sons, Raymond Sanchez and wife, Rose of Albuquerque, Lawrence Saiz and wife, Frances of San Diego, CA, Ivan Saiz and wife, Debbie of Pueblo, CO, and Leroy Saiz and wife, Mechelle of Albuquerque; daughter, Kathy Saiz; beloved friend, Donna Kallio; brothers, Patrocinio Saiz, and Simon Saiz and wife, Dora; sisters, Rita Herrera and husband, Carlos, Edwina Coon and husband, Ron, Helen Vargas, and Antionnette Candelaria; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral Services for Mr. Saiz will be held on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Silva -- Cleo V. Silva, 60, a resident of Tome, New Mexico, passed away on Friday, August 30, 2002. Cleo was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Silva; her father, Max Vallejos; her sister, Isabell Garrison; and one daughter, Myra Chavira. She is survived by her mother, Mauricia Vallejos of Albuquerque; her sons, Jacob Silva; and Robert Chavira and Leslie, both from Belen; her daughter, Taira S. Chavira of Tome; three grandchildren, Nicole; Jacob Jr.; and Jillian Silva; six brothers, Leroy Vallejos and wife, Dodie; Herman Vallejos and companion, Berlinda Bernal, both of Belen; Max Vallejos and wife, Sylvia; Phillip Vallejos and wife, Stephanie, both of California; Leonard Vallejos and Rosie Gomez; and Albert Vallejos of Albuquerque; sisters, Mae James and husband, William of Bosque; Elsie Vallejos of California; Joyce Ortega and husband, Angelo of Albuquerque; Stella Cordero and husband, Rudy of California; Josie Vallejos of Los Chavez; and Garlene Vallejos of California; and her good friend, Simon Chavira.
