Obituary for Zulema

Nichols, age 92, passed away September 26, 2002 at the Guadalupe County Hospital in Santa Rosa following an extended illness. Zulema was born February 12, 1910 in Santa Rosa to the home of Simon Serrano Sr. and Petrita Chavez Serrano. She was reared and attended schools in Santa Rosa. Zulema married Thomas Nichols June 3, 1950 in Santa Rosa. She had been a resident of Los Amigos Nursing Center since December 31, 2001. Zulema was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church where she was involved in the Altar Society, a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of America Court 2276, Prayer Group, Marriage Enrichment, Cursillo, she sang in different church choirs, she was a Eucharistic Minister in church as well as the shut ins and the hospital, a lecturer and commentator and a founding member of the SEARCH program. Not only was Zulema active in her Church but also in her community. She was an original member of the Los Amigos Nursing Home Board, she was Secretery-Treasurer for the St.Joseph Cemetery Association for many years, she served as a bailiff and a translator for the court system, and a member of the Bridge Club. Zulema also made time for work as she worked for various restaurants in Santa Rosa such as Letties Restaurant and the Adobe Inn Restaurant, she also worked for the County Nurse, Post Office, Power Plant, Teeter's Department Store, Parish Secretery, Chamber of Commerce Secretary, OPA and even as a DJ for KSYX AM Radio. She enjoyed embroidering, crocheting, reading and music. Zulema is preceded in death by her parents; her first husband Benerito Baros; her second husband Horacio Maritinez; her grandson Robert Ramon Campos; her brother and sister Eslinda Sanchez and Luciano Serrano; sister in laws Margie Serrano, Mary Serrano and Toni Serrano; Brother in laws Napoleon Romo and Speedy Sanchez. Survivors include her husband Thomas Nichols of Santa Rosa; her daughters Mary Belle Baros Lucero and husband Samuel of Rio Rancho, Ida Jo Baros Campos and husband Albert of Santa Rosa; her grandchildren Karl Lucero of Rio Rancho, Paula Domniguez and husband Tim of Rio Rancho, Pete Campos and wife Lori of Las Vegas, Tommy Campos and wife Barbara, Lettie Chavez and husband Abel, Albert Campos, Jr. and wife Brenda all of Santa Rosa, Brothers and sister Adolph Serrano of Santa Rosa, Simon Serrano and wife Pita of Albuquerque, Luis Serrano and wife Dulce of Santa Rosa, Zolio Serrano and wife Vickie of Albuquerque, Frank Serrano and wife Ofelia of Woodland, Texas, Robert Serrano of Santa Rosa, Charles Serrano and wife Angie of Santa Rosa and Alice Romo of 0Dallas, Texas. Also surviving are 17 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild and numerous nieces;7 nephews and a host of relatives and friends. Rosary services will be held on Sunday evening at 7:00 from St. Rose of Lima Church in Santa Rosa. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday afternoon at 1:00 also from St. Rose Church. Burial will follow in the family plot at St. Joseph Cemetery. Serving as Pallbearers will be Pete Campos, Tommy Campos, Albert Campos, Jr., Karl Lucero, Abel Chavez and Tim Dominguez.
