Akutagawa -- Taro Akutagawa longtime resident and businessman of Albuquerque passed away while traveling in Nevada on June 7, 2002. Private Services for family were held June 17, 2002 in memory of Taro at the Buddhist Temple in West Los Angeles. Reverend Oda a respected friend presided over ceremonies and conducted Services for Taro and his family. Taro was born September 14, 1917 in Los Angeles, CA. Taro and Tazue were married April 7, 1953. Taro relocated to New Mexico where they built a place in the community and raised their family. Taro is survived by Tazue, his wife of 49 years; daughter, Keiko Lambert and husband, Jim; grandchildren, Kaitlin and Ryotaro; daughter, Denise Daly and husband, Tim; and grandchildren, Kyle and Shannon; sons, Yoshiro Akutagawa and Hugh Akutagawa. September 14, 2002 marks the 100th day Memorial as celebrated in Buddhist teachings. This commemorates a day to gather and express our gratitude and remembrance of a loved one; this also marks Taro's birth. His life and spirit has touched so many and will be remembered, we will miss him and love him always. A Memorial Dedication will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2002 at 3:30 p.m. in memory of Taro Akutagawa. His family welcomes friends and family to join in a memorial dedication of a pine tree and memorial bench. The service will be held at Arroyo Del Oso Golf Course, Osuna Rd. and Louisiana, on the 8th tee box.

Davis -- John Davis, 76, a resident of Moriarty, NM passed away Wednesday, September 11, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Rita; two sons, John Wayne Davis of Roswell, NM and Joe Davis of Liberal, KS; one daughter, Monica Astorga and her husband, Onofre (Opie) of Dodge City, KS; three grandchildren, Brianna and Stefani Astorga of Dodge City, KS; and grandson, Jeromy Bynum of Magee, MS; sisters, Rose McCourt and Guadalupe Fogleman of Albuquerque; and one brother, Frank Davis of Moriarty, NM; and numerous nieces and nephews. John was born on October 16, 1925 on the Davis Ranch northwest of Moriarty to George Davis and Angelita (Chavez) Davis. John was preceded in death by daughter, Angie Bynum; his parents; and eight brothers and sisters. John worked on a dairy farm, car dealership, service station, ran his own business for a while, but he is most fondly remembered for his work and dedication as Police Chief of Moriarty for 28 years. He has always been very good with children and during his years as police chief he helped many teenagers. He was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Moriarty. When not on duty as a police chief, he drove the ambulance and tended to his livestock. He always enjoyed ranching. A Rosary will be recited on Friday, September 13, 2002 at our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Funeral Services will be Saturday, September 14, 2002, 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel with Father Anthony Martinez officiating. Interment will follow at the Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Moriarty. Pallbearers will be Calvin Davis Sr., Charles Uitts, George Davis, Louie Anaya, Steve Anaya, Brandon Boe Davis. Honorary Pallbearers will be Allen Walters, George Fogleman, Joel Fogleman, Charlie Anaya, Dick Myers and Larry Gallant. Arrangements were entrusted to the Harris-Hanlon Mortuary in Moriarty, NM. Ferguson -- Charles Jay Ferguson, 54, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, September 10, 2002. He was a longtime resident of Albuquerque and Veteran of the Vietnam War, where he earned a Purple Heart. He is survived by his sons, Clifford J. Ferguson and wife, Lisa, and Raymond S. Ferguson; a granddaughter, Serena Ferguson, all of Ft. Worth, TX; sisters, Shirley Eyler of Questa, NM, Phyllis Bekaert and husband, Duke of Kingman, AZ, Brenda Garcia and husband, Joe; step-father, Edwin Malachowski, all of Albuquerque; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruby Malachowski; and father, Ralph Ferguson. Services will be held Friday, September 13, 2002, at 12:30 p.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE. Interment will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Griffin -- Elizabeth Griffin was born December 24, 1925 in Texla, TX. She passed away September 7, 2002 in Albuquerque. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Freeman M. Griffin Sr.; son, Jack L. Griffin, and is survived by her sons, Robin D. Griffin, Phillip M. Griffin, and Freeman M. Griffin Jr.; daughters, Patricia E. Webster, Janice Satcher, and Veronica M. Brooks; sister, Mildred Bias; sister-in-law Freddie L. Griffin and other family members and friends who loved and will miss her. A viewing and Funeral Services will be held at Shiloh Baptist Church, 608 Avenida Cesar Chavez SE. The viewing will begin at 9:00am on Friday, September 13, 2002, with Funeral Services at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Hanselmann -- Stephen (Steve) Fredrick Hanselmann passed away of viral pneumonia on September 4, 2002 in Columbia, MO where he was attending the University of MO. Born, July 31, 1970, Steve grew up in Corrales, NM, attended Cibola High School and assisted with his family's business, Hanselmann Pottery. He received his Associates degree in computer science from University of Missouri at Trenton. A Memorial Service was held in Chillicothe, MO on September 11, 2002. The ashes will be scattered by family and friends in Howard, Colorado on Sunday, September 15, 2002. Steve is survived by his parents Joan and Fred, brothers, Mike and Jeff and their families, maternal grandmother, Catherine Abbott and paternal grandmother Vera Hanselmann. In lieu of flowers, donations are being sent to the NM Adaptive Ski Program, a learn to ski program for people with physical and mental disabilities. A kids Bi-ski will be purchased in his name. Hernandez -- Pete C. Hernandez, died peacefully among his loving and adoring family on Thursday, September 12, 2002. He was born in Alamogordo on December 4, 1927. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Cordelia Hernandez; daughter, Gloria Koury and husband, Jerry of Tucson, AZ; son, Chris Hernandez and wife, Lucia of Edgewood; daughter, Teresa Godfrey and husband, Bryan of Albuquerque and Elena Hernandez of Phoenix, AZ; grandsons, Alex Koury of Denver, CO and Peter Koury of Tucson, AZ; sister, Pilar Llamas and husband, Joe of Albuquerque; and nephews, Joe and David of Albuquerque. He was preceded in death by his father, Simon Hernandez in 1950 and mother, Feliciana Hernandez in 1997. Mr. Hernandez was valedictorian of his graduating class at Alamogordo High School in 1945. Pete served as a soldier in the United States Army and was later called to return to service in the U.S. Reserve Corps where he served a year in Pusan, Korea during the Korean War. Upon being honorably discharged from the service, Pete attended the University of New Mexico on the GI Bill and graduated in 1953 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He later worked toward his Master's Degree in electrical engineering at night school. Upon graduation he was hired at Sandia Laboratories where he worked in computer applications until retirement in 1992. Pete was a member of Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church, and a member of the Knights of Columbus as a 4th degree Knight. Pete was also a member of Toastmasters International where he enjoyed presenting humorous and inspiring speeches, and won many awards for his speeches. He enjoyed horse racing, sporting events, working on computers and spending time with his grandsons. Pete will be remembered for his loving patience, understanding of others, and his sense of humor. He will be missed as a strong and influential presence in the lives of his family. May he be forever with the Lord. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Rosary will be recited Friday, September 13, 2002, 7:00 p.m., at Our Lady of The Assumption Catholic Church, Lomas and Tennessee NE. Lucero -- Bernardino"Bernie" Lucero was born in Albuquerque November 30, 1922 and passed away September 10, 2002. He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Bernie was loved by everyone who knew him and he enjoyed riding his bicycle to visit people in and around the neighborhood. He is survived by his children, Julia Dimas, Vickie Tapia, and Adolfo Lucero; sister, Carlotta Ramirez; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four nieces; four nephews; numerous other family and friends who loved and will miss him. Services will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church 1860 Griegos Rd. NW. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 13, 2002. Stryker -- Roy T."Buck" Stryker, 85, a resident of Albuquerque died Tuesday, September 10, 2002. He was born December 23, 1916 in Goree, TX. His family moved to Lubbock, TX where he graduated from Lubbock High School, Class of 1933, and then attended Texas Tech. He married Rubey Jean McLaughlin of Amarillo, TX on September 1, 1940. He served as a B-17 pilot in the Army Air Corps during WWII. Upon returning from England, Buck and his brother, Lee, opened their first store in Albuquerque, Stryker Brothers. In 1952, he opened Stryco Sales, a wholesale floor-covering warehouse. Buck was a member of Central United Methodist Church since 1948. He was also a former member of the Albuquerque Country Club. Golf and fishing were two of his favorite pastimes. He is survived by his wife, Rubey Stryker of Albuquerque; nephews and nieces, Gerald Stryker and wife, Shirley and their three children, JoAnn Grandle and husband, Robert and their three children, Barbara Harrison and husband, Harold and their two children, all of Las Cruces, Karan Kennedy and husband, Barry and their daughter of Grapevine, TX, Patricia Stryker of Las Cruces, Frank McLaughlin and wife, Pat and their two children of Dallas, TX, Peggy Martin and husband, Bill and their two children of Corrales, Leslie Bradley and husband, Richard and their five children of Fairfax, VA, Patricia Thomas and husband, Ike and their two children of Granbury, TX, and Karen Frist and husband, Bill and three children, of Nashville, TN; and many friends. Services were held Thursday, September 12, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE, with Dr. Charles Crutchfield officiating. Interment followed at 2:00 p.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
