Montoya -- Deacon Sotero Montoya, 79, born in Cuba, N.M. on April 22, 1920. Mr. Montoya, lived a full and eventful life. He moved to Albuquerque in 1952 and began his career working for the nuns at St. Joseph's College. Mr. Montoya continually worked to serve his fellow man, first as a sailor during World War II on the USS California, then teaching elementary school for 33 years in Jemez at Valle Vista, Carlos Rey and Mary Ann Binford in Albuquerque. He was a president of the neighborhood association which gave Westgate Heights its name. Mr. Montoya, became a Deacon and Co-Pastor at Santuario de San Martin helping to start the newly formed parish. Mr. Montoya was married for 54 years to his beloved wife, Rebecca. He is also survived by his children, Mary Ann Chavez and Dennis, Mildred Giannini and Charles, Agnes Coffelt and Bob, Fermin Montoya and Joanna, Theresa Garcia and Joe, Elsie Stines and Alex (deceased), Francis Montoya and Nancy, Joseph Montoya (deceased), Elizabeth Lucero and John, John Montoya and Joann and James Montoya; sisters, Mary Montoya, Basilia Cordova and husband, Pablo and Elfides Angel; one brother, Erineo Montoya and wife, Casilda; 36 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mr. Montoya was a member of the Catholic Church and a Veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in World War II. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. at San Martin Church, 8301 Camino San Martin S.W. with visitation at the Church after 6:30 p.m. Father Dan Farris, Celebrant. A Rosary/Communion Service will be held Wednesday at twelve noon at San Martin Church with visitation at the Church after 11:45 a.m. Interment will follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 2:20 p.m. Pallbearers will be Paul Giannini, Dennis"Tudd" Chavez, Marc Salazar, Jesse Lucero, Alex Stines and Joe Garcia. Romero -- Alicia Romero, age 86, of Santa Fe, died on Wednesday, December 29, 1000. She was born in Springer, NM, on October 7, 1913, to Epifanio and Maria Deluvina Arellano. Her father was a cattleman and farmer in Springer before retiring to Santa Fe. She was raised on the family ranch near Miami, NM, and attended the public schools in Springer, graduating from high school in 1929. She studied business at New Mexico Highlands University, graduated in 1931, and went to work at the State Land Office in Santa Fe, where she met her future husband, Miguel Antonio Romero, from Las Vegas, whom she married on September 19, 1931. Alicia served two terms as secretary of state from 1947-1950 and frequently served as acting governor. She served under Gov. Thomas Mabry, while the late U.S. Sen. Joseph Montoya served as lieutenant governor. The past Democratic chairman of San Miguel County, she was on the executive committee of Secretary of State Association and served as president of the National Association of Secretaries of State. She was secretary and treasurer of the San Antonio, NM, Oil Company from 1948 to 1952 and was secretary-treasurer of MAR Oil and Gas Company, which she helped her husband establish. She was a certified grapho-analyst and a member of the International Society of Grapho-Analysts. She was appointed to the Board of Tuberculosis Hospitals of New Mexico. She served on many commissions, boards and clubs during her dynamic career. These included the Santa Fe Women's Club, where she served as president during one term, and La Society Folklorica de Santa Fe, founded by Cleofas Jaramillo during the mid-1930's. In 1959, Alicia served as president of La Sociedad. Never lacking in spirit and energy, Alicia started painting while she was teaching a class in handwriting identification in the University of New Mexico's Division of Continuing Education. She enrolled in art class and took off from there. Alicia has painted hundreds of floral arrangements, landscapes, buildings and animals. Her paintings have been featured at several banks and other exhibitions in connection with other artists. After about 20 years of painting, she continued to be highly prolific and painted at every chance available to her. She is survived by her four children; Felipe Benigno Romero, Gloria Yoland Romero de Gurries, Miguel Antonio, Jr., and Leon Alban Romero; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous other relatives and friends. Visitation will begin on Thursday, December 30, at 5:00 p.m. at Berardinelli Family Funeral Chapel where a Rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, December 31, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Francis Cathedral. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Las Vegas, NM. Nolan -- Jose Benjamin Nolan, 75 years old of Vaughn, NM died Friday, December 24, 1999 at the Veteran's Hospital in Albuquerque, NM. Mr. Nolan was born July 11, 1924 at Ocate, NM. He married Elsie Corrine Sanchez in 1945 at Springer, NM. Mr. Nolan is survived by his wife, Elsie of Vaughn; one daughter, Bernice and Luis Chavez of Albuquerque, NM; three sons, Alex from the family home, Louis and Rita of Armarillo, TX, Richard and Faline of Amarillo, TX; five brothers, Alfonso and Rosie of Miami, NM, Fernando and Mabel of Raton, NM, George of CA, Mike and Eva of Wichita, KS, Phil of CA; four sisters, Julia and Lencho Sanchez of Cimarron, NM, Vera Montoya of Springer, NM, Helen Garrison of Springer, NM Rafelita and Benji Lopez of Espanola, NM; thirteen grandchildren, Rachel, Michael, Cynthia, James David, Jeremy, Jennifer, Andrea, Joseph, Jamel, Kristi, James, Chris, and Dalton. Eight great-grandchildren, Amanda, Crystal, Amanda Nicole, Jade, Samantha, Isiah, Jacob, and Vincent. Mr. Nolan served as a Military Policeman in the US Army, European Theater, WWII, from 1944-1946. He was the American Legion, Post 53 Commander, Retired from Southern Pacific Railroad in 1980, Owner and Operator of Nolan Upholstery, Member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Church Council, Knights of Columbus, member of St. Joseph Society, Honorary Volunteer Fireman and Longtime resident of Vaughn, NM. Wake services will be conducted on Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. from St. Mary's Church in Vaughn. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m. also from St. Mary's Church with Father Patrick Duffy officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Vaughn. Baca -- Amalia Molly Baca, beloved and devoted mother, grandmother and sister, was called home to be with the Lord, Thursday, December 23, 1999, while surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Baca was born in Jarales, NM; she lived in Barstow, CA four years, then making her home in Albuquerque since 1957; she was a parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church; formerly a parishioner of Our Lady of Belen, where she was a member of the Catholic Daughters; she always faithfully devoted time to pray the Rosary. Mrs. Baca was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Baca; one son, Gilbert Baca; one brother; and three sisters. She is survived by her loving children, Norbert Baca and wife, Lupe, Martha Montoya and husband, Eliseo, J.D. Baca and wife, Diane, Al Baca and wife, Patty, all of Albuquerque; daughter-in-law, Rita Baca; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Flora Pena, Sophie Turrieta and Bernie Sanchez; one brother, Felix Sanchez; numerous nieces, nephews and other family members. She will be greatly missed by her loving family and all those who knew and loved her. Baca -- Mr. Rito Baca died Tuesday in Albuquerque at the age of 89. Mr. Baca was a member of the Catholic Church and was a veteran of World War II. Mr. Baca worked at Memorial Hospital when it was a Tuberculosis Sanitarium. He also worked at Sandia Base as a plumber and retired in 1972 after 30 years. After retiring Mr. Baca served as a School crossing Guard for 17 years and in his spare time loved to garden. He is survived by his wife, Georgiana Baca of the family home; son, Robert Lee Baca and wife, Joanne of Lawton, OK; daughters, Millicent Manspeaker and husband, Daniel, and Patricia Sandoval, all of Albuquerque; ten grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral Services for Mr. Baca will be held on Monday at the st. Anne Catholic Church where the Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Christopher Manspeaker, Damian Manspeaker, Jerome Manspeaker, Mark Manspeaker, Jeremy Montoya, Robert Baca, Gerald Baca and Rito Baca. Cordova -- Mrs. Delphina (Phina) Saavedra Cordova, born April 29, 1940 in Kingman, Arizona, died December 17, 1999 in Phoenix, AZ. She was preceded in death by her mother, Anne Lee Lovato Saavedra and her father, Frank Saavedra. She is survived by her husband, Emilio Cordova; her daughter, Ann Abeyta; one sister, Lydia Saavedra; one brother, Orlando Saavedra; sisters-in-law, Sylvia Saavedra and Lydia Matoff; one niece, Sherri Gordon; one nephew, Jeff Saavedra; grandnephews, Trevor and Travis Gordon; grandnieces, Taylor and Cayden Gordon; uncles and aunts, Richard and Bertha Lovato, Joe and Margaret Lovato, Stella and Florian Giron, Eliseo and Jenny Saavedra, Clorinda Montoya; and numerous cousins and friends. Hernandez -- Roberto Hernandez, 70, passed away December 16, 1999. He was a longtime resident of Albuquerque, a 21 year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served in Germany, France and Vietnam. He was awarded Airman's Metal for Heroism, Vietnamese Gallantry Cross with Palm, PU Citation with V device for Bravery, Campaign Ribbons, and 3 Air Force Commendation Metals. He retired from Civil Service after 18 years. He was an avid golfer, fisherman, bowler, and loved music. He was preceded in death by parents, Antonio and Manuelita Hernandez; brothers, Juan and David Hernandez, all of Del Rio, Texas. He is survived by wife, Ida Montoya Hernandez; sons, Robert P. Hernandez, Michael E. Hernandez and wife, Stephanie; granddaughter, Raquel Marina Hernandez; brothers, Cruz and Nestor Hernandez; other family and friends who loved and will miss him. Memorial services will be held at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 21, 1999, Mass of Christian at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday with Father Joe Vigil Celebrant. Padilla -- Mrs. Adelina"Lina" Padilla, 58, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on December 15, 1999. Mrs. Padilla was the beloved wife of 36 years to Willie Padilla. She is also survived by her three sons, Alex, Jason and Adam; two sisters, Rosa Montoya and Patsy Chavez and husband, Tito; two brothers, Eugene Padilla and wife, Anna and Larry Padilla and wife, Alice; four grandchildren, Alexus, James, Jason and Dominique; two aunts, Ola Jennings and Luticia Archuleta; mother-in-law, Lucia Padilla; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mrs. Padilla was a member of the Catholic Church and a life member of the Altar Society.
