Berdine -- Denis Monahan Berdine (11/5/14--12/16/99), father, brother, husband, friend, hunter and fisherman, and one in a million, went to his rest, December 16. Son of Fred Berdine and Marie Monahan Berdine, Denny was born in Hoquiam and raised in Elma, Washington. As a young man during the depression, he worked in road construction, lumber mills and in a pulp mill, between attending St. Martin's College in Lacy, Washington, on a football scholarship (1931-33) and the University of Washington (1937-39), where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering in 1939. Upon graduation in May 1939, he went to work for Union Oil Company in California and in August of the same year married his longtime sweetheart, Louisette (Lou) Bergeron. After then years in various supervisory and management positions at Union Oil, Denny was hired by the California-Texas Oil Company (Caltex), a joint venture and overseas subsidiary of Standard Oil of California (Chevron) and Texaco, to work for the company on Bahrain Island in the Persian Gulf. After five years in Bahrain (1949-54), by which time he reached the position of Personnel Manager, Denny was reassigned to the Caltex London office to help design refineries for the company around the world. Eighteen months later, he was sent to Visakhapatnam, Andrah Pradesh, India, to manage one the refineries he helped design. In India, Denny became General Manager of the oil refinery and a member of the board of directors of Caltex India, Ltd. During his time in India (1955-62), the refinery in Visak became a showplace for visiting dignitaries both American and Indian and Denny and Lou hosted such illuminaries as U.S. Chief Supreme Court Justice Earl Warren, U.S. Ambassadors Chester K. Bowles and John Kenneth Galbraith (who favorably mentioned Denny in his book, Ambassador's Journal), Indian Finance Minister Morarji Desi, who later became Prime Minister of India, as well as numerous other dignitaries, world business leaders and international journalists. From India, Denny was assigned to build and manage the Caltex refinery in Raunheim, Germany, near Frank-furt-am-Main, and did so from 1962-64. In 1964, because of Lou's health Denny was reassigned to the Caltex head office in New York, where he eventually headed all overseas refining operations for Caltex, a company with refining operations in Europe, the Middle East and Australasia. Denny took early retirement from Caltex in 1969 and went to work for billionaire Daniel K. Ludwig at National Bulk Carriers. At National Bulk Carriers, he headed up Ludwig's oil and gas companies in Panama and the Dominican Republic before finally retiring after three years to Rio Rancho with Lou at the beginning of 1973. Once in Rio Rancho, Denny was able to spend his time hunting and fishing and golfing with Lou and friends. As a boy, hunting early became a passion for Denny and while overseas in 1950, Denny and Lou went on safari in Africa, where Denny bagged several trophy animals, including a rhinoceros, eland, grants gazelle and dick-dick. In 1957, he took his oldest son, Mike on shikari (the Indian version of a safari), where he tracked tigers, shot a couple of leopards and even hunted off the back of a local maharaja's prize hunting elephant. Once in New Mexico, Denny continued his love of hunting locally for javalina, ibex, turkey and dove, and traveled to Kansas for pheasant, Wyoming for elk and antelope, and even up to the Yukon for moose. In later years, his passion for the outdoors found its outlet in fishing and the center of much of his activities centered around the Rio Rancho Fishing Club. In addition to fishing in New Mexico, he fished for salmon off the coasts of Washington, Oregon and California, and trophy game fish like marlin off the coasts of Mexico, Baja California and Florida. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Lou, in 1982, and second wife, Frances Gaunce Berdine, in July, 1999. Denny is survived by his two sons, Mike (Theresa) of Tucson, AZ and Pat (Patricia) of Pensacola, FL; grandchildren, Julie and David Berdine of Seattle, WA, Kelly Berdine of San Antonio, TX, and Stacy Tabing of Tucson, AZ; his sister, Mrs. Virginia (Shy) McNelly of Winlock, WA; and numerous friends. A very special man, Denny was important to a lot of people and will be sorely missed by all. The family asks that those seeking to make donations do so in Denny or Lou's name to the American Cancer Society or the Lung Association. Religious services will be held at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Rio Rancho, with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 20, and Funeral Mass on Tuesday, December 21 at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. A reception following the Mass will be held at the family home. Cremation arrangements are being provided by Sunrise Society, 891-8200.

Bird -- Alice M. Bird, 93, a resident of Albuquerque, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, December 15, 1999. She is survived by her daughter, Blanch Burroughs; son, Dr. William Bird and wife, Doni of California; granddaughter, Jennifer Schmidt and husband Brian; grandsons, Michael R. Burroughs, David Bird, Keith Bird and Jon Bird; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Lillian Marie Bird in 1927; and husband, Fred R. Bird in 1981. Upon arriving in Albuquerque, Alice soon found a home and a church home at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, which eventually became incorporated with St. Aidans to become St. Mary's Episcopal Church. She was active in the Altar Guild, St. Elizabeth's Guild and the YES Organization. She also became a Mary Kay consultant, many years with the Carmoline Grady Bunch. Mrs. Bird was a native of Deweyville, OH and came to Ft. Wayne when she was three years old. Indiana soon adopted her and as she grew up she became dedicated to the service of others, her family, first of all, neighbors, friends and the entire community. Her entire adult life had been spent in serving others. Wife, mother, author, friend, servant, confidant - Alice Bird had been many things to many people, always ready to listen, always eager to help. Mrs. Bird succeeded Dr. Nathan Salon as Commissioner to the Indiana Commission on Aging & Aged when Dr. Salon died in 1975. That same year she was elected (1974) first Senior Citizen Queen and served graciously in that capacity for one year. During her term as a Commissioner, she served as general chairman of major events, including the Governor's Conference, the State Queen contest, the Rose Festival and the Indiana State Fair for Senior Citizens. She had also served as chairman for Volunteerism and spiritual concerns committee on the State Commission. For the past three years, she had been general chairman of the Governor's Conference, a tremendous undertaking. She was secretary of the Indiana SR. Citizens Association, a member of the Indiana Coordinating Council and a member of the long range Study Legislative committee of the Indiana State Commission. As secretary of the Indiana Sr. Citizen's Association, she helped organize its annual conference. She served as chairman of the State Queen Contest for two years. In her home community, she served as chairman of the N.E. Area III Council on Aging Advisory Council and the Advisory Council of Project CENTS. She had also chaired the Religious Emphasis Committee of the YWCA for many years, and when her children were younger, she gave many hours to Boy Scouts and 4-H. She served on the District Board of Boy Scouts of America and was chairman of the mother's organization for Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity at Wabash College when her son was a student there. She had the distinguished honor of having been the only non-professional member of the Ad Hoc committee to review licensing regulations for the Aged, Retirement Homes Division for the Indiana State Board of Health. She spent hundreds of hours on that committee and also served at its co-chairman. Alice's church has always been dear to her heart. Her faith is deep and abiding and has allowed her to reach out in the community to churches other than her own Episcopal Church in Ft. Wayne. She had conducted retreats for five Presbyterian Churches and other interdenominational groups. She was the speaker at the Inter-faith Annual Luncheon for Church Women United. For 19 1/2 years, she was directress of the Altar Guild of Trinity Episcopal Church in Ft. Wayne and helped organize Altar Guild for Peace Lutheran Church and Emmaus Lutheran churches in Ft. Wayne. In addition, she was advisor to First Presbyterian Church in Ft. Wayne and when it was first built helped dress the Altar. In her own words, she had served on every committee there is in the church locally and had served on the governing body of three Episcopal churches in Ft. Wayne. She is also a member of the Diocesan Board of the Episcopal Church in Northern Indiana. Her ties to her church have been very meaningful and so well known in the community that she is known as Mrs. Trinity Episcopal Church. Perhaps her favorite project was her own Prayer Group. It was conceived seven yeas ago when ladies from her neighborhood knocked on her door several times and said,"Alice, you must start a Prayer Group!" The three women started meeting once a week at 9:00 a.m. to study the Bible and pray. From that humble beginning,"Alice Bird's Prayer Group" has branched out into three separate groups around Ft. Wayne. The original group has now grown to 10-15, still meeting every Tuesday morning. With Marian Adair and Frances Dickinson, Alice Bird founded the Christian Women's Prayer Breakfast. It is now an institution in Ft. Wayne and attracts as many as 1500 women from Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Michigan every October. Alice is listed as an Indiana Author in the Indiana State Library at Indianapolis and the Ohio State Library as a result of her 13 year history of the Episcopal Church in Ft. Wayne and three Altar Guild Manuals, which are used throughout the United States. She also authored a"Guide for Volunteers" which is used at Parkview Memorial Hospital. Among her many accomplishments is a first for the State of Indiana. She organized the first group of high school girls to work as volunteers in hospitals. They still work in all three hospitals. She also organized the first group of church women at Old Hope Methodist Hospital to take pictures of newborn babies to be given free to their mothers. Alice's generosity and love was not limited to Ft. Wayne and Allen County, Indiana. She was also advisor to the Soodo Women's University in Seoul, Korea for 15 years. Alice Bird is a loving, gentle and marvelous human being who had lived her life for others and had been an inspiration to those all with whom she had come in contact. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, 11:00 a.m., at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 1500 Chelwood Park Blvd. NE, with Father Robert Naigel officiating. Interment of cremains will take place at Greenlawn Memorial Cemetery in Ft. Wayne, IN. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 1500 Chelwood Blvd. NE, 87112. Alice's love was shared by many and will be missed by all. French Mortuary, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE.

Schmitt -- Ethel Hagan Schmitt was born May 24, 1904, to John Alexander and Malissa Jackson Hagan of Giles County, Pulaski Post Office, Tennessee, one of nine children. The Hagans owned and worked a large farm in rural Tennessee. Ethel lived through 95 of the most exciting years in recorded history. She saw the beginning of the 20th Century from the vantage of a farm, became a pioneer in women's education, and watched as her son walked on the moon. Ethel never considered her education to be complete. Schooling included a one-room, country schoolhouse in Stella, Tennessee. She told stories of how the pupils"out-learned" the teachers and were promoted to a two-room school even farther from their homes. In the case of the Hagan family, that meant driving miles by horse and buggy. Cold, snow or even high water seldom kept the children from school. After two years of high school and two years of college at Martin College boarding school in Pulaski, graduating in 1923, Ethel began her teaching career in two-room schools in Lawrence County, Tennessee. There she taught grades one through four and then grades five through eight, serving also as a principal for a country school. Ethel then taught elementary geography at Kingsport, Tennessee, while she attended summer school at George Peabody College, now part of Vanderbuilt University in Nashville. Ethel ultimately received her B.S. degree in August of 1928. While finishing her last summer school, Ethel was persuaded that she should be the first Peabody graduate to teach in the state of New Mexico. Thus, she arrived in Silver City in September, 1928, to join the Education Department of New Mexico State Teacher's College, now Western New Mexico University in Silver City. Ethel served as one of four critic teachers at the Training School, teaching fifth and sixth grades, as well as college students who were planning on teaching careers. She kept up with many of her students and several would go out of their way to contact her through the years, including a number of recent visits in her home. At the time of Ethel's arrival from El Paso, Texas, in one of the Parish's motorized"stages", Silver City was little more that a cow town that also served the local mining camps. There was no natural gas, few electrical appliances, and a limited amount of water. Bullard Street had recently become the first paved street in the town. Ethel was in demand as a speaker during her later years, reminiscing on her life and early times in the Grant County area, as well as her passion for nature, particularly Southwestern flora. Ethel married Dr. Harrison Ashley Schmitt (Ph.D.), a mining geologist from Mankato, Minnesota. The marriage ceremony took place in Nashville's Immanuel Baptist Church on October 19, 1929, her parent's 37th wedding anniversary. At the time of their marriage, Harrison served as Chief Geologist for the New Jersey Zinc Mining Company, but was headquartered in Hanover, NM. The couple arrived in New York City on a combined wedding and business trip on October 24, 1929, or"Black Thursday", the day of the famous"1929 Crash" of the stock market and the beginning of the Great Depression. Their first home was at the Empire Zinc Mining Company's camp at Hanover. In January 1931, Harrison started a consulting business with an office in El Paso's Mills Building with Ethel as field assistant, typist, proofreader, and manuscript critic. Harrison wrote many scientific articles for mining magazines during the Depression. Ethel always said,"they rode the depression of the 1930's to the bottom." In April of 1933, when their first child, Alexandra, was one year old, they gave up the El Paso office and moved back to the mining camp house they had left two years before. The family, now including a son, Harrison Hagan, born in 1935, moved to the Silver Heights area of Silver City in 1937. A daughter, Paula, died of pneumonia in January, 1939 at the age of 15 months. In 1943, with another daughter, Armena, born in 1940, the Schmitts moved to the final family home north of Silver City on Cottage San Road. Harrison and Ethel maintained his consulting office there until he died in 1966. Ethel wrote, and in 1993, self-published"Byjingos and Dadgum - A Farmhouse Remembers (1867-1920)", a memoir of the Hagan family and her early life, which has been enjoyed by her family and friends. In this memoir, the family home, speaking for Ethel, says: Alone I stand, a house with reflections and expectations of my life and the people who have been a part of me. Tomorrow I'll be sold for the third or fourth time at a public sale....A pleasant autumn breeze has suddenly changed to an early winter wind. I find myself drowsily rocking; my frame is weak, bottom and beam joists have degenerated. Houses grow old like people from weight of memories and deterioration. Creaking joints, fallen arches and rusty elbows make me admit that I am old....no dog warns of an approaching friend or stranger...The hound dog, Brewster, refused to accept any other house as home. How many times he was given away or how many miles he was taken I could not estimate, but he always found his way back. I literally vibrated with pride each time I felt the thump of his weary tail on my porch as if an Olympic feat had been accomplished. His last long walk was from beyond Pulaski for 20 miles or more. He sighed and I buckled with relief when the Cap'n said that it was not honorable to deprive him of his beloved home and he would not be given away again...The dog that I remember best, of course, was the last one, Ole Alice. She seemed almost human by understanding what was said to her. If goats got from their field Lissie might say,"Those goats are in the wrong field again." Without another word Alice would be off like a flash, not to return until the last goat was where it belonged.... Ethel is survived by Alexandra and Bob Decker of Alamo, CA, Harrison H. Schmitt and his wife, Teresa Fitzgibbon of Albuquerque, Armena and George Franks of Tucson, AZ; four grandchildren, Janis (Chris) Murphy of Carlsbad, CA, Linda (Steve) Merriam of Pleasant Hill, CA, Maggie and Hagan Franks of Tucson; three great-grandchildren, Kirk and Caitlin Murphy and Sean Merriam. Also surviving is her youngest sister, Bernice Mobley of Athens, AL. Graveside services were at the Masonic Cemetery in Silver City on Thursday, December 16, 1999. Honorary pallbearers were every friend who ate at her table, crossed her threshold, or learned from her life. Also, we honor the caregivers that made her final years more comfortable, Dora Madero, Theodora Quintero, Irma Rodriguez, Lydia Diaz, Janice Scott, Betty Hunt, and Gloria Zamora. Ethel hoped that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be given to the Methodist Home, P.O. Box 5010, Waco, TX 76708-9989 and the Gila Regional Medical Center Hospice, c/o Wanda Hall, 1313 East 32nd, Silver City, NM 88061. Bright Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
