BAKKUM -- NEIL A celebration of the life and times of Neil Bakkum was held at Nuestra Senora de Delores Chapel in Canon, NM on May 5th. Bakkum, 58, a long-time Alaskan fishing Capitan passed on April 10 in Seattle, WA where he was outfitting his latest commercial fishing boat, the "Magia". The celebration was attended by many friends and family under sunny skies and later the full Flower moon. Neil was born in Livingston, MT to Carl and Beverly (Werner) Bakkum. Carl and Beverly deemed him "a keeper". That phrase followed Neil throughout his life. Carl would fish the Yellowstone and bring home the big trout. This had a lasting effect on Neil and fishing and the ocean would become a lifelong passion. Neil was a graduate of the class of 1972 from Sandia High School. While in school, he played football for the Great Coach Rick Ruscetti. Neil briefly attended Ft. Lewis College where he honed his skills in fishing and skiing. There he was introduced to his second passion, hang gliding. Neil relocated to Temecula, CA in the mid 70's where he was introduced to Dick Eipper. He worked as a test pilot for Eipper Formance honing his skills as a pilot. He flew Torrey Pines, Yosemite and other legendary hang gliding hot spots throughout the West. Neil returned to Albuquerque and spent all of his spare time riding the Tram and launching his glider off Sandia Peak. Neil relocated to Angel Fire, NM in the early 80's. His passion for fishing returned. Neil could usually be found on Eagle Nest Lake or on the Cimarron River, rod in hand. He worked for Bill Thome constructing homes that were later featured in Architectural Digest. Neil was instrumental in the installation of the then top of the line snow making system at the Angel Fire Resort where he was the assistant mountain manager. In 1988, he was introduced to the Alaskan fishing industry, by Trey Curl, fellow hang glider and lifelong friend. He made his move to Dutch Harbor and began a long and intimate relationship with the ocean and everything that it is. He worked for Jubilee Fisheries for 23 years apprenticing under Captain Sam Collier as a deck hand, engineer and Captain. The responsibilities were enormous but Neil had found his niche. He long lined Sable fish and pacific cod on the F/V Kjevolja in the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska. Neil took great pride in what he did and loved to share his catch. His smoked black cod was legendary and shared with everyone during his infrequent trips his home in Canon. Neil never greeted a friend or new acquaintance with a handshake; it was always a bear hug and a wet kiss on the check. If you didn't know anything about the magic and spiritual mystery of the ocean, he would help you visualize it. Neil was preceded in death by his mother, Beverly (1986) and father Carl (2010). He is survived by his brother Mark and his family of San Diego along with several cousins. Neil will be sorely missed by all the people whose lives he touched. Contributions can be made in Neil Bakkum's name to the Seattle Fisherman's Memorial, PO Box 17356, Seattle, WA 98127.

JOHNSTON -- DOROTHY BEHAN Age 87, passed away on the evening of May 19, 2012. Dorothy was born to Agnes and Francis Behan, the eldest of their two children. She is survived by her two children, David Johnston and Julie Groneman, and two grandchildren, Tara and Ian Groneman. She is preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Bill Johnston, and her brother, Francis Behan Jr. Dorothy grew up on a farm near Sabula, Iowa with her parents and younger brother, Bud. She loved to tell stories about her life on the farm and how she used to ride a horse to school. Dorothy took school very seriously and graduated high school as Salutatorian. Her parents, very progressive and forward thinking, thought that she ought to go to college so that she would never have to depend on anyone for her living. So after high school, Dorothy enrolled at Iowa State University, where she received her bachelor's degree in Child Development with a minor in Chemistry. During WWII, Iowa State was used to house recruits in transit and there she met her future husband, a Navy recruit on his way to Florida. They were engaged after two weeks and she moved down to Florida and got a job in a dime store to be closer to him. When the war ended, she and her husband, Bill, moved to Bozeman, Montana. Dorothy ran the nursery school at Montana State University while Bill finished his Master's and Ph.D. coursework, a job that allowed her to provide for the household and still look after their two young children, David and Julie. Bill soon got a job working for the AEC and the family had to move around a lot. They lived in Idaho Falls, Maryland, and then finally moved to Albuquerque in 1963, where they stayed. Dorothy left her job at the nursery school and became a full-time wife and homemaker who volunteered with the Girl Scouts, PEO, and various church organizations. Dorothy was a sharp, opinionated, but very proper lady who loved to host Bridge games and work crosswords and puzzles. She was a warm, caring wife, mother and grandmother who gave her full help and support to those she was closest to. She continued to volunteer for PEO and her church groups into her early 70s. She liked to garden and sew and was fond of attending the Santa Fe Opera and musicals at Popejoy Hall with her husband, daughter, and grandchildren. She liked traveling and spent much of her golden years with her husband out at their cabin near Bluewater Lake. Dorothy was dearly loved by her family and friends and is sorely missed. NESS -- ERIK LEROY Age 57, a long time native New Mexico newsman, passed away on May 12. He was born and raised in Alamogordo, New Mexico during the height of the Space Race. Both parents, Carl and Marie Ness were involved in that endeavor. He graduated from Alamogordo High School in 1972, learning from teachers who inspired him to be a writer. His memory of seeing the Wonderful World of Disney in color on television also sparked an acute interest in radio and television broadcasting. He attended the University of New Mexico until his brains grew in, and he was lured by the smell of alfalfa and a really good journalism department to New Mexico State University. At NMSU he was part of their legendary film program under the direction of Dr. Orville Wanzer, and produced a long series of black and white and color films. While attending NMSU he worked as operations manager for radio station KGRT and was one of the founders of campus radio station, KNMS, "Ozone Ranger Radio". He also served as a news stringer for Albuquerque news stations, KOB, KOAT, and KGGM and was a southern New Mexico correspondent for 50,000 watt KKOB radio. Outside of journalism Erik worked on over 100 political campaigns including the position of press secretary for Attorney General of New Mexico. After graduating from NMSU he worked as news director for KDQQ and KKOB radio as news reporter and anchorman. In 1981 he went to work for New Mexico Farm Bureau as their director of communications and media relations, where he was twice recognized as the nation's most effective agriculture public relations spokesman as well as the recipient of numerous national awards for broadcast commentary, broadcast features, and broadcast news productions. In addition, he received many awards for his print writing skills and unusual "wordsmithing". He also worked for the American Farm Bureau Federation as a national broadcast commentator on the groundbreaking radio show "Insight!". Many of Erik's commentaries were used by Paul Harvey on his ABC broadcast. He served as president of New Mexico Press Club and the Advertising Federation of Southern New Mexico. He also served as a board member of Cowboys for Cancer Research. He retired from the New Mexico Farm Bureau in 2010 but continued to write columns for the National Farm Bureau in addition to media consulting for the Elephant Butte Irrigation District. Erik was an award winning song writer and music producer and recording artist. He worked with many of the nation's leading songwriters and bands in the southwest and Nashville. He's the winner of the American Collegiate Talent Search (ACTS) which was judged by singer/songwriter Michael Martin Murphy. At that time he and Murphy became close friends, collaborators, conspirators, calculators in the world of cowboy and country music. He was able to travel with Murphy all over the country and experience all sides of music and show business world. Erik and Murph just finished their latest song together, "Law and Order on the Border". Most of Erik's recording was done at the legendary studio, Goldust, in Las Cruces, New Mexico under the tutelage of recording engineer and producer, Emmett Brooks. WOOD -- ANDRUE VALERIO 2008 - 2012 aka "Monkey", flew to heaven on Thursday, May 17, while held in his mommy's and daddy's devoted arms, at the age of four. "Monkey" was a true super hero and could always be seen wearing one of his many different capes, but always preferred batman. He loved toast (don't forget the butter), and sleepytime tea. He always found comfort in backrubs and chewing on socks, (yes it's true, clean or dirty!), and if you didn't know, Andrue would tell you, "a pizza and baby soda costs only seven bucks." We will miss being called "Phaty" and having "boogies" on our shirts, but we know our super hero is an angel flying high in the heavens, watching us down below and living in our hearts. He will be missed forever, and loved always. Andrue was preceded in death by Robert and Bobby Lopez, Dennis Butcher; Rosarito Sanchez; and Trudy Harwood. He is survived by his loving and devoted parents, Chelsea Lopez and Christian Wood, who were chosen by God to share our miracle baby from the beginning, who changed so many lives; as well as his grandparents James and Amy Lopez, Andrea "Andie" Johnsen Lopez, Paul and Tamara Wood; great-grandparents, Lydia Lopez, and Bob and Diane Johnsen; aunts, Rosarito Wood, Michaela Wood, Abby Lopez, and Maesyn Lopez; uncles, Justin Lopez, Christopher Wood, Jude Lopez, and Jericho Lopez; loved ones, Russell Wynn and Selena Ramirez; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who loved him dearly. Services for Andrue are pending. Account number 3001782980 has been opened at the State Employees Credit Union, care of James Lopez, (505)864-0335. All donations to help with costs of services are greatly appreciated. Arrangements are being handled by the Noblin Funeral Service Belen Chapel, 418 W.
