OLSON -- HAZEL MARION Age 79, went home to Heaven Saturday, August 27, 2011. Beloved mother of Michael G. Olson (Tammy), Kim E. Holloway (Richard), John A. Olson (Jeaneane), and Matthew A. Olson (Stacey). She is also survived by 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Hazel was born in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, the 11th of the 12 children of August and Emily Anderson. Adventurous and fun loving, she left the farm to attend nurses training in St. Paul, MN. After graduation she worked as a nurse in St. Paul where she met and married a career sailor, George C. Olson Jr. (Ole). They embarked on a life full of moving and travel and raised four children while stationed in Washington, Florida, Japan, California and New Mexico. Hazel managed the home and family while Ole was deployed and during this time became active in the Navy Wives Club of America, a service organization dedicated to helping the community and other military spouses. Hazel was a natural leader and was honored in 1972 as Military Wife of the Year. In New Mexico, Hazel continued her nursing career working at Lovelace hospital and Camino Vista and Manor Care Nursing Homes from where she retired after Ole's death in 1994. Hazel was a lifelong Lutheran and loved the worship and music but it was the faith, fellowship and support of her friends and family at Messiah Lutheran Church who sustained her during many difficulties, especially her health in later years. Hazel was sports fanatic, as a girl she attended all the school games. As a mother she was active in Little League, church and work softball. In later years basketball was her passion. She hated to miss a Lobo game but her loyalties expanded when she spent time with her children and grandchildren in Arizona. Always proud of her Swedish heritage Hazel was known for her excellent cooking and the Scandinavian treats she prepared and served during the holidays. Hazel treasured her extensive family who remained in Minnesota and enjoyed sharing stories of her and their lives. Hazel was proud of her sons Michael and John for their service in the Army and the work of her children Kim and Matthew. She especially enjoyed helping raise her grandchildren Jason, Matthew and Abi, Annalie and Ethan. Hazel loved to laugh. She shared her joy, good humor and love with all of us and thousands of medical patients and care home residents during her career. She is also survived by her sisters Alice and Lucy, her sisters-in-laws Marie and Margie as well as her brother-in-law Allan Olson and his wife Pam. Hazel was a long time member of the church choir and had a deep love and appreciation for music; memorial contributions may be made to benefit the Messiah Lutheran Church Organ Fund.
