CONRAD -- Bonnie L. Conrad, 84, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, September 12, 2008. A 1978 graduate (with distinction) of the University of New Mexico, she owned and managed the Bread of Life Christian Country Store in Albuquerque's Nob Hill area. In addition to her work in retail, Mrs. Conrad was a professional photographer. A native of southern Oregon, she was a partner with her eldest sister, Mildred Ager, in the well-known Ashland photo shop, Memory Lane Studio; another sister, Ellen Elder also worked in the shop. Mrs. Conrad was one of the earliest photographers for both the Ashland Shakespearian Festival and Southern Oregon University, and many of the Festival's and the University's archived photos were taken by her. Her publishing credits include many postcards of her beloved southern Oregon, covers for the Tommy Hicks ministry's magazine, and numerous photos for both magazine and newspaper articles. Among her favorite Oregon photographic subjects were Ashland's Lithia Park, Mt. Ashland, the Rogue River Valley, and Crater Lake. She also enjoyed photographing her adopted home, New Mexico; her photographs of Santa Fe and Mesa Verde appeared in a variety of magazines. Mrs. Conrad was an avid gardener. She usually planted pansies in the fall because the "cheerful pansy faces keep my spirits up" through the winter. Early spring flowers were her favorites, especially violets and daffodils, but she also found room in her flowerbed for lilies, roses, and any flower that smelled fragrant. She always planted old-fashioned blue petunias rather than the fancier colors; she said only the blue "smelled like petunias should smell." What she called her "inside hobby" was collecting dolls. Her collection includes a variety of types from baby dolls to dolls that sing, talk, and walk, but she preferred the fancy-dress dolls with elaborate costumes. She enjoyed listening to Gospel music, watching Christian television, talking to friends and family on her cell phone, celebrating birthdays including her own, and eating New Mexican food smothered in green Chile, never red. Mrs. Conrad was preceded in death by her husband Lt. Warren G. Conrad, an Army officer; her parents, Chester Leon Lewis and Ella Mae Bryant Lewis of Ashland, OR; a sister, Mildred Ager of Ashland, OR; and two nieces, Ruth Ingeman of Auburn, CA, and Eleanor Butler of Marcy, NY. She is survived by her daughter and son-in law, Drs. Nancy and Joseph Martinez of Albuquerque, NM; an older sister, Ellen Elder of Chino Hills, CA; a niece, Jeanette Benson of Chino Hills, CA; a nephew, Rev. Jack Elder of Woodstock, GA; and many great-nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date in Ashland, OR. MARKO -- Shirlee Marko, of Albuquerque, was born June 8, 1927, in Cardston, Alberta, Canada, where she was raised. She died peacefully on September 8, 2008. Shirl came to Socorro, NM in 1957, and to Albuquerque in 1963. She had three children, Kate, David, and Jane. She is survived by daughters, Kate Nanlohy and Jane Gagne and son-in-law Norm Gagne, all of Albuquerque; grandson Kaben Nanlohy; sister Norma Pilling and her husband, Gaelynd; brother Jack Kearl and his wife, Donna; brother Wayne Kearl; and many dear nieces and nephews and friends. The last decades of Shirl's life were the best. She spent 13 happy years with her husband Charlie Marko, a sweet and good man who loved her deeply and charmed her life. She was a Life Master in bridge and she traveled the world. She had good, caring friends, and she loved her family to her soul. In January 2008, she learned that she had terminal cancer. She had no fear, and spent her last months in complete dignity and grace, with a remarkable sense of humor and a glowing, beautiful smile to the end. Over the months, family and friends came from all over to say good-bye; we all laughed and hugged and talked, and cried some too. There could not have been a better send-off for the woman we all love. Night Song Rock me gently, Time. Rock me in the bosom of sable night. Unfurrow my brow. Turn out the light. Rock me softly in the long night. -Wayne Kearl, 2008. Special thanks go to the many caring and compassionate people at the New Mexico Cancer Center, and with Presbyterian Hospice. No flowers please. MCNABB -- Gary D. "Sonny" McNabb, age 72, a resident of Bosque Farms, NM, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 12, 2008 at his home, following a short illness. He was born November 5, 1935 in Mountainair, NM, the son of Kenneth and Irene McNabb. He married Lillie M. Valenzuela on July 18, 1959, after dating her for one year upon his return from the Korean Conflict. After his first few years in Mountainair, roaming the hillsides, he moved to Albuquerque in 1941 with his parents and three siblings. He attended Albuquerque High School and received his G.E.D. while serving his country in the United States Navy. He was on active duty from 1954 thru 1958, with the 7th Fleet, serving on four ships, which included 18 trips across the Pacific Ocean during the Korean Conflict. He received his honorable discharge in 1962 for "honest and faithful service" to his country. Upon his return from the war, he worked at Standard Oil Station briefly where he met the love of his life, Lillie, while she worked as a waitress at Mario's in the adjacent building. While continuing to sweep Lillie off her feet, he went to work at Dan's Boots and Saddles and developed his leatherwork skills. In 1959, he joined Ironworkers Local #495 of Albuquerque and served his trade honorably until his retirement in 1985. During his 26 years as a Union Ironworker, he worked throughout the western United States on some of the most prominent projects shaping the skylines of major cities, as well as some of the most secretive projects in secure locations. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 13 in Albuquerque and the Elks Lodge #2499 in Belen. His unbelievable talents and love for leatherwork, silversmithing and ornamental ironwork allowed him to create unforgettable art. In his lifetime, his love for his family was unmatched, but second to that was his love for hunting and fishing. There was hardly a mountain range in New Mexico that he had not traversed, nor a lake, stream or river his hook had not ventured into. As of September 12, 2008, "He's Gone Fishin!" Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Irene McNabb; and his sister, Joyce Chance. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Lillie; his daughter, Ione Wilson and granddaughters, Whitney Wilson and DeeDee Tapia (Mario); great-grandchildren, Sebastian, Ethan and Leah; granddaughter, Lee Anne Marquez (Nava) and great-grandchildren, Serena, Mya and Gage; his son, Forrest and his wife, Laura; granddaughter, Angela Glud (John); grandson, Ryan; his brothers, Kenneth "Butch" McNabb (Bernice) and Larry McNabb; his closest cousin and cohort, Wayne McNabb and many other loving cousins, nieces and nephews of the McNabb family; tia Sara and the Valenzuela family and a long list of great friends. A Celebration of Sonny's life will be held on Friday, September 19, 2008 at 6:00 p.m., at the Calvary Chapel of the Rio Grande Valley, with Pastor Sam Saiz officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 5:00 p.m. Inurnment with military honors will be held at a later date at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family is accepting donations to create a permanent memorial on behalf of Gary D. "Sonny" McNabb, reflecting Veterans of the United States Armed Forces and the events of September 11, 2001. Arrangements are being handled by Riverside Funeral Home of Belen, 418 W. NAVARRE -- Harry Navarre, D.M.D. Dr. Harry Navarre passed away a "boy of the Golden West," he was born in Alhambra, CA, on November 9, 1916, and was preceded in death by his mother, Rita Navarre and sister, Doris Gorka. Dr. Navarre was a child actor in the silent Our Gang comedies and Kid Kahn productions. A profound dislike for the acting profession, however, spawned his vow and childhood dream, "to become a doctor". Dr. Navarre attended the University of Southern California. He then continued his dental education at the University of Louisville (Kentucky) where he specialized in oral and maxillofacial surgery and later interned at Louisville General Hospital. To our community's credit, Dr. Navarre chose to reside and practice his profession under the clear, blue Albuquerque sky which was conducive to another passion, flying. After retirement from a long and successful career in 1984, he continued and enjoyed many hobbies including the love of flying his plane, Bellanca #8847 Romeo, one of several throughout his lifetime. An aficionado of the antique American automobile, Dr. Navarre was an active participant and venerated member of the Model T Ford Club of America and the Veteran Motor Car Club of America. Dr Navarre's professional associations include the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the International Association of Anesthesiologists, Delta Sigma Delta Fraternity, and a life member of both the American Dental Association and the New Mexico Dental Association. In addition, Dr. Navarre has served as Editor, Secretary and President of the Albuquerque District Dental Society. A man of principle and courage, Dr. Navarre contributed much to the health, well being and support of our community. He donated generously to the Presbyterian Health Care Foundation, the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History, the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra and to the Norwegian American Museum in Decorah, Iowa. Dr. Navarre is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Irene O'Connor Navarre. Together they enjoyed traveling to many parts of the world and especially in their private plane from Canada to Mexico and to all states throughout the USA. Dr. Navarre will be greatly missed by his loving wife, his nephews, Richard Jones and James Jones and their families in Minnesota, as well as his many friends and former patients. He will be especially missed by his long-time, exceptional care-giver, Clara Camp, whose attention and skill provided comfort and reassurance in his final days. Respecting Dr. Navarre's request, there will be a private interment in Granite Falls, MN. The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Presbyterian Health Care Foundation, PO Box 26666, Albuquerque, NM 87125.
