ANDERSON -- Dr. Elmo D. Anderson, 93, resident of Albuquerque for the past 54 years, died Tuesday, September 2, 2008. He is survived by two daughters, Kay Maize and husband, Steve and Sherry Anderson Lombana and husband, Cesar, all of Albuquerque; five grandchildren, Keirschen Maize Warnica and husband, Josh of Ft. Worth, TX, Landon G. Maize of Phoenix, AZ, Jacqueline Lombana Bunkley and husband, Ken of Albuquerque, Sandra L. Lombana of Covington, LA, and Philip A. Lombana of Albuquerque; two great-grandchildren, Amanda T. Bunkley and Christopher W. Bunkley of Albuquerque; and sister, Rae Davis of Dallas, TX. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Mary Burnison Anderson. Elmo was born in a farm house in Montague County, TX, the son of Bess and Dee Anderson. He graduated from high school in Bowie, TX in 1933. Elmo then attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he waited tables at P.K.'s Sandwich Shop and the Longhorn Waffle Shop to earn money for room and board. He met Mary while they both were attending the university, and they were married in the spring of 1938, the same year that Elmo graduated with his BA degree and was accepted at Baylor Medical School in Dallas, TX. After graduating from Baylor in 1942, he interned one year at Parkland Hospital in Dallas before being called into active service in World War II as a medical officer attached to a U. S. Army engineering regiment. He served in New Guinea and the Philippines as a regimental surgeon, attaining the rank of Major. Following World War II, Elmo practiced general medicine, first in Borger and Friona in the Texas panhandle and then in Clovis, NM. In 1954, the family moved to Albuquerque so Elmo could do a three-year residency in internal medicine at the Veterans Administration Hospital. He then went into private practice, opening an office near the corner of Constitution and San Mateo. He practiced medicine there for 27 years, retiring in 1984 at the age of 70. First and foremost, Elmo Anderson was a dedicated and capable physician, recognized by both his patients and the medical community for his skills and compassion. He was a member of the Albuquerque-Bernalillo Medical Society, the American Medical Association, and the American Society of Internal Medicine. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, September 22, 2008, 1:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church, 215 Locust NE, with Rev. Dr. Mike Elliott and Rev. Dr. Paul Debenport officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Doctors Without Borders, USA, P. O. Box 5030, Hagerstown, MD 21741, or doctorswithoutborders.org.
