BENGE -- Melton Carlton Benge, 78, a resident of Northwest Albuquerque since 1961, died on Monday, October 8, 2007. CHAVES -- Max Chaves, 92, a resident of Laguna Pueblo, passed away Friday, October 5, 2007. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mildred; two sons, John Chaves and wife, Goldie of Tallahassee, FL, Glenn Chaves and wife, Diane of Henderson, NV; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Max was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and one son, Allen Fred Chaves. He was a WWII veteran having served his country in the United States Navy. Max was a very well known automobile mechanic for many years in both Winslow, AZ and Laguna Pueblo. He retired from the Jack Pile Mine in 1981. He was also a member of the Tribal Council for the Laguna Tribe. Max is also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His family will have fond memories of his unique creative ability, in addition to his technical skill as a mechanic. DASSIE -- Louis F. Dassie, Sr., age 84, formerly of Chicago, died Monday, September 17, 2007 in Rio Rancho, NM. Mr. Dassie retired from Illinois Bell after 44 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. Preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife of 56 years, Marge, nee Lilly; parents, Gigi and Ma Dassie; sons, Jimmy and Mike; and daughter, Carol (Greg) Blakely; three sisters, Dorothy (Hank) Bell, Janet (Clarence) Walstrom and Bernice (George) Popelka; and two brothers, Jack (Ruth) and Don. Survived by his daughters and sons, Margo (late John) McCarthy, Betty (Phil) Cummuta, Lou (Gay) , Bob (Denise), Alice (late Hugh) Rice, Kathie (Mark) Franklin, Tom (Teresa), Rick (Maureen), Steve (Donna) and Dave (Tina); 39 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. DAVIES -- Ruth Davies, 87, resident of Albuquerque, passed away Sunday, October 7, 2007. She is survived by her daughter, Carol Stephens and husband, Steve, of Albuquerque; son, Richard Davies and wife, Karen Hildebrand, of Plattsburgh, NY; step-sons, Keith Davies and wife, B.J., of Denver, CO, and Leonard Davies and wife, Susan, of Durango, CO; sister, Joan Raborn, of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Jessica, Robert, Miles, Tristan, Matt, and Beth. She was preceded in death by her husband, Emlyn, of 55 years. Ruth was the first woman Certified Public Accountant in New Mexico. She taught accounting at the University of New Mexico for 5 years and owned her own firm for over 50 years. She was a member of The New Mexico Society of CPAs, The American Society of Women Accountants, The Soroptimists, The Welsh Club, Cristo del Valle Presbyterian Church, and The Duke City Bridge Club for many years. ESQUIVEL -- Ernestine "Tina" Esquivel, 75, a resident of Santa Fe and Albuquerque, passed away on Monday, October 8, 2007. A loving mother and grandmother, she is survived by her son, Martin Esquivel and his wife, Pauline; daughter, Karla Esquivel and her husband, Diego Rael; grandchildren, Graciela, Marisa, Carlos Jay and Aurelia, as well as many other loving family members and friends. Tina, also known as "Ernie" to family and friends where she grew up in Socorro, was warmly devoted to her late brother, Daniel Romero; brothers, Bobby, Raymond and Gene Romero; and her sisters, Jennie Aragon, Lugy Clark, and Dolly Yonker. Her early life experiences with her siblings, and late mother, Julianita, shaped her into a strong woman determined to provide much love and support for her family as she progressed down life's path. During many phases of her life, she successfully fought adversity with tremendous grace, dignity and unselfishness. Her work ethic, faith and courage were inspirational and admired by all who knew her. Her greatest joy was her children, both professionally and personally successful, and four happy and grateful grandchildren whose lives she impacted with wisdom, unending love and heartfelt affection. GUZMAN -- Geraldine Guzman entered her eternal rest on Thursday, October 9, 2007. She was born in Albuquerque to Policarpio and Perfecta Sanchez. She is survived by her treasured family, her husband, Adolph B. Guzman with whom she shared 53 wonderful years of marriage; her two daughters, Kelli Ann Rose and Kristi Ariaz, along with their husbands, Curt Rose and Andy Ariaz; her two grandchildren, Lauren and Ryan Ariaz; her brother, Mariano Sanchez; her sister, Patricia Bianchi; and her beloved in-laws, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Abran and Pio Sanchez. Geri was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She retired from Sandia National Laboratories after 20 years of service where she was a dedicated and highly respected staff secretary. LERMA -- Frances V. Lerma, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, October 8, 2007, surrounded by her loving family and friends. Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick R. Lerma and sister, Eusevia Chavez. She is survived by daughter, Patricia Chavez and husband, Larry; granddaughters, Brittania and Sharee; and daughter, Mary Frances Lerma. Frances is also survived by her sisters, Andrea Gilliam and Helen Cordova; as well as many nieces and nephews; and her cat, Lucy. Frances loved working in her flower garden and caring for her pets she had through the years. Thank You to all that brought food and provided support when Frances returned to her home. A special Thank You to Elisa Roybal, Debbie Frye, and Marcy Fouch for being there to assist the family through Frances' final journey. Also Thank You to Mr. M. MARTINEZ -- Isaias Martinez Jr. (Honde) 76 years of age, resident of Bernalillo, New Mexico passed away October 7, 2007. He is survived by his wife, Lupita; one son, Jeff Martinez from a previous marriage; four brothers, Jake Martinez and wife, Lorraine, Florentino Rael and wife, Gloria, Ernest Martinez and longtime companion, Mary, and Edward Martinez; three sisters, Irene Lovato and husband, Charlie, Libby Mendez, and Elisa Martinez; and many nephews and nieces. Mr. Martinez was preceded in death by his parents, Isaias and Martina Martinez and sister, Angie Cardona. Mr. Martinez was a member of the North Valley Seventh Day Adventist Church and also a member of the VFW in Bernalillo and DAV Chapter#3. He served in the Korean War. MCCOLLOM -- Arnold (Mac) E. McCollom was welcomed in to the arms of the Lord on October 6, 2007. Arnold was born in Davenport, IA on September 2, 1928 and moved to Albuquerque 35 years ago. Arnold is survived by his loving wife of sixty years, Donna; five children and their spouses, son, Arnold McCollom II (Candace), daughters Cassie Kelley (Bill), LaDonna McCollom, Sherre Dickson (Randy) and Laura Enriquez; ten grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his "little sister" Nonie Mason and her husband, George. He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters; one brother; and grandson, Eric McCollom. Arnold was a proud 52 year member of the Masonic Lodge #37 in Davenport, IA. He also served as a Past Patron of Eastern Star Trinity Chapter. Arnold leaves a legacy of love, laughter, and living life to the fullest, while always helping others. After retiring from his own business, Lomas Tastee Freez, he continued his lifelong passion of reaching out to those in need by first volunteering at the Storehouse and then becoming their Community Outreach Director. MEYER -- WILLIAM JOSEPH MEYER JR. May 17, 1926 - October 6, 2007 William Joseph Meyer Jr. (Bill) died October 6, 2007 in Albuquerque after an extended illness. Bill was born on May 17, 1926 in Santa Fe of a prominent territorial era family. His parents were May Closson and William Joseph Meyer Sr. His father passed away in 1935, and his mother and grandfather, Sheriff Charles Clement Closson, raised Bill. After attending school in Santa Fe, he graduated from New Mexico Military Institute and served and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy. He attended UNM where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. On November 12, 1949, he married Mary Margaret Jarvis of Denver. They made their home in Santa Fe and reared their family. He began a long career in automobile sales, initially employed by his uncle, Thomas Closson, at Closson and Closson Motor Company. Eventually, he started City Auto Sales with John Sloman. Later he became a partner at Dick Hughes Volkswagen. He was a life-long member of Saint Francis Cathedral Parish, a member of the Elks Club and the Santa Fe Country Club. All Santa Fe knew him to be an avid fisherman, hunter, and golfer. Although he always considered Santa Fe to be his home, after retiring from the automobile business Bill enjoyed second homes in Del Norte, CO, San Carlos, Mexico and Sun City West, AZ. His wife of 52 years, Mary Jarvis Meyer, and his son, William J. Meyer III, preceded Bill in death. He is survived by daughters: Lynn Meyer Davis and husband Lawton of Albuquerque; Debbie Doe and husband Brian of La Junta, Colorado; Michelle Catherine Meyer of Santa Fe; Amy Meyer Pitzer of La Junta, CO; daughter-in-law, Debra Casados Meyer of Santa Fe. Bill had 15 grandchildren including Matthew Davis, Felisha Martinez, Kelly Anderson, Noel Davis-Westlake, William J. Meyer IV, Lora Doe, Guy Meyer, Andy Doe, Enoch Pitzer, Ezra Pitzer, Elisha Pitzer, Grace Pitzer, Ariel Pitzer, Jerusha Pitzer, and Havilah Pitzer. Additionally Bill is survived by six great-grandchildren including Alex Anderson, Enrique Martinez, Rem Liebert, Joseph Martinez, Ainsley Westlake and Alea Westlake. Bill enjoyed his later years with his beloved companion and family friend Betty Wilde. With Betty and his loving family gathered around him, Bill very peacefully departed a wonderful long life. A visitation will be held Thursday, October 11, 2007, 4 p.m. with a Rosary to follow at 7 p.m. at Berardinelli Family Chapel. PADILLA -- Dorothy "Jean" Padilla passed away on Tuesday after a long illness. Sunriser Jean, as she was known to her family, loved everything about the morning. She awakened at 5:00 almost every day of her life to whistle her favorite songs while preparing breakfast. Born in Detroit, Michigan, on January 30, 1923, Jean spent her childhood in Michigan, Canada, and Oklahoma. She graduated from Wayne State Business College in 1944 and worked for the Veterans' Administration for 5 years. In 1947, she married Ruperto Padilla of Ribera, NM. From 1970 until she retired in 1985, Jean worked for Mountain Bell Telephone Company. For many years, Jean was a devoted member of San Clemente Catholic Church in Los Lunas, where she attended weekly mass and Bible study classes. She delighted in her senior exercise group and watching her grandchildren participate in numerous school musical and sporting events. Jean's favorite pastimes were sewing, surfing the Internet, and all forms of word games. All of Jean's grandchildren enjoyed going to orthodontist appointments, knowing that Grandma would take them to Lucky Boy's Restaurant afterward. Love flowed easily from Jean and was returned by her entire family. She is survived by her children, Melinda Padilla Reynolds, Dr. Barbara Dupre, Debora Selke, and John Padilla; their spouses, Warren Reynolds, Michael Selke, and Aurelia Padilla; grandchildren, Dr. Caryn Reynolds and husband, Zachary Diccico, Eric Reynolds, Dr. Ross Eppler, Allison Selke, Clinton Selke, Brittany Hasse and husband, Christian, Johnathan Padilla and Adriana Padilla; and three great-grandchildren, Rachel Hasse, Ainslie Hasse, and Jazon Selke. PEARSON -- Marjorie Ranetta Pearson, 88, a resident of Albuquerque since 2003, passed away on October 7, 2007. She was born on August 4, 1919, in Oak Park, IL. Marjorie was a clerk-typist with the U S Government in Albuquerque. After retirement she became a long time resident of Truth or Consequences, NM where she was a librarian and member of the New Mexico Library Association. REYNOLDS -- Allen A. Reynolds, age 88, of Albuquerque, passed away on October 9, 2007. He was born August 5, 1919 in Erie, PA, to the late Comer and Blanche (Freeman) Reynolds. He attended schools in Sherman, NY prior to enlisting in the Army Air Corps. While in the service, Allen was an aircraft engine mechanic. He and Irene Shinn were married in Sherman, NY on October 21, 1944. Allen was an avid hunter. In 1958 he began Reynolds Auto Salvage in Albuquerque where he continued to be active until he passed. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Irene, one daughter, Bonnie McMurray of Tijeras; son, Patrick and wife, Mary Ann Reynolds of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Sheri Barajas and husband, Armando, Laurie Clark, Patrick Reynolds II and wife, Heather, Joshua Reynolds and five great-grandchildren, Deya, Patrick III, Braiden, Chase, and Sofia. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him, especially his four legged friend, Otis. There will be a celebration of Allen's life at the home of Patrick, his son, 539 Zartman Rd. SAUNDERS -- Harold Saunders, 84, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, October 8, 2007. He survived by his wife, Margaret; daughters, Christina Squire and husband, Bruce, and Patricia Carpenter and husband, R. Bruce; and three grandsons: Charles Squire and wife, Gail, Andrew Squire, Adam Squire and wife, Darcey; and two step-sons: Michael and David Day. He was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes, and son, Skip. Harold was a WWII veteran, serving in the Maine Corps, Navy, and finally retiring from the Air Force in 1964, when he moved to Albuquerque and worked for, and retired from, the Federal Aviation Administration. Harold was a life-long sports fan, played bridge, attended church, and loved Duran's huevos rancheros. We would like to thank all the staff at Manzano del Sol for their help and support. SEVER -- Maxwell Irvin Sever was born May 17, 1924 in Raton, NM and died September 18, 2007 in Albuquerque, NM at the V.A. Hospital, where he lost his courageous battle with diabetes. He became a resident of Albuquerque in 1944 after receiving a medical discharge from the U.S. Army, where he last served in the South Pacific. Max was a man of faith who loved his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Ross Sever and Nellie Clarice (Foote) Sever; two brothers; three sisters; and his only son, Darrell Irvin Sever. Max is survived by his wife, Bettie Lou (Rhoden) Sever; daughter, Jane; granddaughters, Kimberly Salzman, Pamela Sever, Alexandra Dyer and husband, Brandon; great-granddaughters, Elizabeth Sisson and husband, Eric, Emilia Edwards and fiance, Rian McCoy, Ashley Salzman and Alynna Dyer; great-great-grandchildren, Hailey, Zachary, and Brittney Sisson, James Edwards and Ryan Fotieo; special niece, Faye Gaines of Springer, NM; and brother, Clyde and wife, Maryann and family of California. The family is grateful for the many years of medical service and support provided by the V.A. TURNER -- Thelma Hudson Turner, 95, passed away on October 7, 2007. Thelma was born and raised in Hudson, FL, the second of six children. She moved to Albuquerque in the early '40s where she remarried and worked as a bookkeeper for Slades Dairy and later Cummins Diesel and Pepsi Cola Corporate in Orlando, Florida. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Norma L. Simmons; a son, Ronald W. Moore; and husbands, Wilbur Moore, George L. Savage, and Ralph Turner. Thelma is survived by one sister, Hazel Sigmon; sisters-in-law, Ferdel Hudson and Jennette Hudson, all of Florida; a daughter, Susan Savage Marchi, her husband, Michael Marchi; a son-in-law, John Simmons; and grandchildren, David Moore, Billy Moore, and Tony Moore, of Florida, Kevin Simmons, of Texas, Cheryl Simmons, Lori Simmons, Vincent Marchi, Renee Marchi, Alexandria Marchi and Caitlin Marchi, all of Albuquerque. YELENOVSKY -- Valentina Yelenovksy, 84, a former resident of Rio Rancho, passed away on Friday, October 5, 2007 in Shreveport, Louisiana. Valentina was born July 24, 1923 the daughter of Michael Demetri and Olga Checkovich Gusko in Bayonne, New Jersey. She had worked in Civil Service as a part of the Department of Defense before retiring. Valentina had been an Airman 3rd Class in the United States Air Force. She had been a volunteer at the Lovelace Westside Hospital while living in Rio Rancho. Valentina was preceded in death by her husband, George Yelenovsky in January of 2007; also preceded by five brothers; and three sisters. She is survived by one brother, Bill Gusko and wife Ouida of Shreveport, LA.
