CHAPMAN -- Jill Lee Chapman, 43, of Belen, NM, died on October 7, 2006, after a short illness. She is survived by her sisters, Laura Chapman of Union City, NJ and husband, Fernando Galaviz, and Beth Chapman of Newton, NJ and husband, Steven Sherwood; and two much cherished nephews, Steven Paul Sherwood and Charles Thomas Sherwood, also of Newton, NJ. Born in Patterson, NJ, Jill spent her childhood and adolescence in rural New Jersey and received her basic education in its schools. In 1984, when she was 21 years old, Jill suffered a catastrophic spinal cord injury which left her a paraplegic for the rest of her life. But her physical limitations did not touch her spirit. Determining to pursue further education, she relentlessly pushed ahead, especially after moving to New Mexico in 1991. Beginning with successful, happy years at UNM's Valencia campus, she completed work for her baccalaureate degree in history at UNM in 2003. UNM-Valencia in particular had a special place in her heart, and she taught several classes in its programs. Her abiding interest was the development and application of computer skills within the liberal arts, particularly in philosophy and advanced social theory. Working from her wheelchair, she conceded nothing to her "disability" and was a popular and effective teacher. She was always eager to share what she knew and to inspire her students to reach beyond their grasp. After graduation from UNM, she attended Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, VA, to work in its highly regarded Science, Technology, and Society program and earned her M.S. there this past May. She dealt with special physical challenges, but, in fact, there was no hill too steep for her chair. In addition to her family, Jill is also survived by many former students, friends - especially Patricia and Nat Page -- and colleagues, who came to know and admire her indomitable spirit; her boundless goodwill; and her casual confidence that anything is possible to those of sufficient courage. Hers was a life which counted. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date on the UNM - Valencia campus to honor her memory and celebrate her short, but full life. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Jill may be made to Cindy Ankiewicz, Department of Development and Grants, Valenica Campus, 925-8552.

GOEBEL -- Virginia Goebel April 16, 1924 to September 28, 2006 Virginia (Ginny) Goebel was born and raised on a pecan and peach orchard farm on the western edge of Waco, TX. She graduated from Waco High in 1940 at age 16, and received double degrees in Home Economics and Elementary Education from North Texas State University. She married Morris R. Goebel, also from Waco, in 1945, who remained her husband for 55 years. They moved to Albuquerque in 1953 when Morris was hired by Sandia National Labs, and raised three children - Rod, Vicki, and Don. The family joined Central Methodist Church in 1954, where she was active in the Chancel Choir for many years. Virginia devoted her life to being a wife, mother, homemaker and gardener. She was a gifted 'perfect pitch, plays by ear' pianist, and made sure all three of her children could read music and play an instrument. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother for both sons, and leader of her daughter's Girl Scout Troop for 8 years. She organized the summer Day Camp activities twice, with her troop always winning the competitions when participating. Her leadership abilities became well recognized and she was asked to head the Girl Scouts for NM in the late 1960s. Virginia and Morris both loved to play bridge, and organized a bridge club early on with church friends. Virginia also excelled as a flower arranger, interior decorator and seamstress. Her home decor was all her own handiwork - even the drapes and upholstery - as well as her daughter's and her own wardrobes. She was an active member of Mesa Diggers Garden Club, loved setting up the State Fair exhibits, worked in the Council Libary, and served as President of the Albuquerque Garden Council for one term. She taught part-time kindergarten when her children were young, and then ran the office for several doctors when she was in her 50s - just for 'something interesting to do'. She even sang in the chorus for an ACLOA stage production of The Sound of Music around 1974. Virginia was taught to fish in the Bosque River by her father as a young girl, and she encouraged and enjoyed her own family's camping and fishing trips, which soon included boating. Her last great adventures were experienced in the comfort of an RV instead of a pitched tent. "Mother" was always on the go, never with idle hands, and had an uncanny gift for organizing and getting things done. She was constantly doing for others. She had a great sense of humor, and a particular kindness and goodness about her that stayed even thru her last days. She refused to complain, and never had an unkind word to say. Mother brought love and joy and adventure to her family and her many friends, and will be missed by all. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her son, Rod. A Memorial Service is scheduled in the Chapel of Central United Methodist Church on Saturday, October 21, 2006 at 12:00 noon. Her ashes will be taken to the Santa Fe National Cemetery the following week for burial alongside her husband, Morris. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Zia Hospice Foundation, 4141 Montgomery Blvd NE, 87109 - a fund to help needy families with hospice care. Or to the Music Fund of Central United Methodist Church, 1615 Copper Ave NE, 87106.

MCCRACKEN -- William C. (Billy) McCracken June 20, 1975 - October 11, 2003 I'll lend you for a little time a child of mine, He said. For you to love the while he lives and mourn for when he's dead. It may be six or seven years, or twenty eight or nine, but will you, till I call him home, take care of him for me? He'll bring his charms to gladden you and shall his stay be brief, you'll have his lovely memories as a solace for your grief. I cannot promise he will stay, since all from earth return, but there are lessons taught down there, I want this child to learn. I've looked this whole world over in my search for teachers true, and from the crowd that crowds life's lane, I have selected you. Now will you give him all your love, nor think the labor vain, nor hate me when I come to call to take him home again? I fancy that I heard them say "Dear Lord Thy Will Be Done." For all the joy thy child will bring the risk of grief we'll run. We'll shelter him with tenderness, we'll love him while we may, and for the happiness we've known, forever grateful stay. But shall the Angels call for him much sooner than we've planned, we'll brave the bitter grief that comes and try to understand. Billy, we all miss you and Dad so much, but we do our best every day, as we know you would want us to. We love you, Mom, Paul, Jacque, Dawn, Shawn and Mom Marie

SIMS -- Edward Douglas Sims, Sr. 84, originally of Lansing, MI and long-time resident of Albuquerque, passed peacefully in his home on October 10, 2006, surrounded by family, and specifically in the loving arms of his granddaughter and long-time care taker, Sonja Sims, her significant other, John Sneesby and his mother, Lilly Ogden, and Ed's grandson, Michael Wright. He was a devoted and honorable husband and father, marrying Wanda Jean Culbertson of Tucumcari, NM in May 1944. Together they had 11 children, all raised in the Catholic church. He is survived by his children, Edward D. Sims Jr. and his wife, Therese, Peter L. Sims and his wife, Linda of Georgia, Rita M. Sims-Kirkland and her husband, David Kirkland of Kansas, Nancy Jean Cooper, Michael A. Sims and his spouse, Mary, Linda M. Hill and her husband Michael of North Carolina, Judith L. Sims-Dutz and her husband, Stephen, Colleen F. Bultmann and her significant other, Peter Zilink, and Scott P. Sims of Texas. He is also survived by a faithful battalion of grandchildren (35!) and great-grandchildren too extensive to name! He was preceded in death by his wife of 29 years, Wanda; his daughters, Theresa and Judith Ruth; his brother, Newt; and his sisters, Valerie and Grace. A World War II Veteran, he proudly served his country from 1940 through 1945 as a member of 384th squadron and with the 509th Bomb Group as a Technical Sergeant from 1945 to 1948, and his memories of those days of national service remained some of his most cherished. Following his honorable discharge from service, he was employed as one of the original Security Inspectors for Sandia National Laboratories where his contemporaries affectionately referred to him as Big Edd, not as much for his stature as his presence. He retired in 1985 after 35 years of service. He was also a devoted member of the Sangre de Cristo parish. In his own wonderfully poignant words he said, "I have loved so many people silently and could not bring myself to speak out, it's too emotional, and I always was a sentimental old fool. May God bless each and all of my children. I have loved all of you each in a different way." He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. A Rosary will be recited Friday, October 13, 2006, 10:30 a.m., followed by Mass at 11:00 a.m. at Sangre de Cristo Catholic Church, 8901 Candelaria Road, NE.
