Amalia Velarde, 91, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 12, 2006. Amalia was born in Caballo, NM to Escolastico and Rafaelita Valdez. She married her husband, Jesus P. Velarde in 1932 and they were married for 49 years until Jesus's death in 1981. She was also preceded in death by her sons, Gilbert and Sammy. Amalia is survived by her sons, Leo Velarde and wife, Rita, Andy Velarde and wife, Georgia, Fred Velarde and wife, Sandra, Harry Velarde, and Jerry Velarde; daughters, Sylvia Popkes and husband, Allen, Clorinda Ricci and husband, William; brothers, Juan, Selso, and Carlos Valdez; sisters, Emma Serubia and Minnie Barreras; 19 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place and a gathering to celebrate her life with be held at a later date.
