Barela -- Mrs. Nicomedes Beatrice (Nico) Barela, 97, a lifelong resident of New Mexico passed away December 6, 2002 surrounded by the people she loved. Mrs. Barela has gone to join her husband, Carlos Barela of 69 years in the enteral heavens above. Mrs. Barela was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico on April 24, 1905 where she lived a wonderful life on this earth. During her lifetime she devoted herself to her family. Mrs. Barela was a homemaker who loved to cook, sew, craft and work in her garden. She was united in marriage November 3, 1932 to her loving husband, Carlos Barela in San Fidel, NM. She enjoyed life and treasured her family and friends. Mrs. Barela would spend hours talking on the phone and visiting with those she loved. She enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, a slice of lemon meringue pie, going to church, sitting outside on her front porch, going out to eat and watching television. Nico is survived by her daughter, Delores Oehm; three grandchildren, Jean Sinclair and husband, Curtis, Debbie Otero and husband, John, Carl A. Apodaca and wife, Anita; six great-grandchildren, Nicole Sinclair and husband, Michael Sibley, Lisa Arnold and husband, Brian, Matthew Otero, Krystin Apodaca, Carl C. Apodaca and Phillip Otero; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Nico was preceded in death by her parents, Diego and Delores Armijo; three brothers; four sisters; and an infant son, Diego. Mrs. Barela was a member of the Catholic Church. A Visitation for Mrs. Barela will be Sunday afternoon from 2:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. in the Gabaldon Memorial Chapel, 1000 Old Coors Dr SW with a Rosary to be recited at 3:00 p.m. by Gabriella Nieto. A final visitation will be Monday Morning from 8:30 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. at St. Anne Catholic Church, 1400 Arenal SW with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. by Father Daniel Balizan. Interment will follow at the Barela Ranch in Acomita, New Mexico. Pallbears will be Carl Apodaca, Carl C. Apodaca, Curt Sinclair, John Otero, Matthew Otero and Phillip Otero. Bentz -- Arnold F. Bentz. After a sudden and devastating illness, our dearest Arnold, age 57, returned to his Heavenly Father, December 6, 2002. Devoted husband of Cathy; and loving father to Matthew and Marisa; he was cherished by his parents, Lillian and Arnold Bentz (long time residents of Albuquerque); a younger brother, Melvin; and his sister-in-law, Rhonda from California also survive him. Arnold's early achievements included earning an Eagle Scout Award and graduating from the Albuquerque Academy. After completing his degree from Albuquerque's St. Joseph's College in 1970, Arnold began a long career as a chemist, criminologist and lab technician. Known for the diversity of his skills and ability to resolve equipment problems, he will be greatly missed in his current position with the New Mexico State Lab. Services will be private, attended by family and close friends. In lieu of flowers or other gifts, memorials should be donated in his name to the Presbyterian Hospital Oncology Unit (1100 Central Avenue, S. E., Albuquerque, 87106) where the nurses provided exceptional care with skill and compassion.

Boggs -- William M. Boggs, January 30, 1929 - December 2, 2002. Our dad, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and dear friend, Bill, was called home to spend everlasting life with his Lord and Savior on Monday, December 2, 2002. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Robert Dirk Boggs. He is survived by his sons, Dan Boggs and wife, Charlene, Mike Boggs and wife, Juanita; and daughter, Debbie Padilla and husband, Albert; grandchildren, Joey, Anthony, Dano, Jana, Michael, Amy and Matthew; great-grandchildren, Joey Tyler, Brittany and Kaeli. Burns -- Preston Edward Burns, 18, of Albuquerque, died November 28, 2002. Born in Albuquerque on October 18, 1984, Preston is survived by his loving and caring mother, Susan (Suzi) Burns; and his"Auntie B", Barbara Grothus, both of Albuquerque; uncles and aunts, Tom Grothus and Wendy Slotboom of Seattle, WA and Mike and Heidi Grothus and their children, Casey and Michelle (MEG) of Niwot, CO;"Poppa and Grandma," Ed and Margaret Grothus of Los Alamos, NM; grandmother, Ruth Davis and family of Wilmington, NC; and many members of his extended family. He was preceded in death by uncle, Ted Grothus. The family wishes to express deepest gratitude to Preston's longtime mentor, Bill Bordone, of Wise Men, Wise Women, for his unswerving ten-year dedication to Preston. Carrillo -- Rudolfo"Rudy" Carrillo, September 9, 1926 - December 2, 2002. Rudy, 76, a devout Roman Catholic, left this life to be with God on December 2, 2002. Rudy was a native New Mexican and WWII Veteran, serving in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theatre, 1942-45. Rudy was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Trujillo Carrillo; father and mother, Albino Carrillo and Ester Nevarez Carrillo; brothers, Joe and Albino; and sisters, Deborah and Corrine. Survivors include two sons, Albino Carrillo of Saint Paul, MN, and Rudy Carrillo of Albuquerque; one daughter, Ysela M. Carrillo, MD of Nashville, TN; two grandchildren, Kiara and Cruz; and many cousins and nieces; sisters, Cuca Gilliland of Redlands, CA and Dolores Rede of Las Cruces, NM. Rudy Carrillo was a graduate of Las Cruces High School and of New Mexico A&M College. After proudly serving his country, he spent much of his adult life in politics, running successfully for political office in the late 1950's and early 1960's. He was the County Clerk in Dona Ana County, and later a State Representative. He was the director of Urban Renewal in Gallup, NM. Later in life, Rudy became a successful insurance salesman while keeping up with local and state politics from his home in Albuquerque. Rudy was well known in New Mexico State Democratic circles, and worked with both lobbyists and politicians, even as he got older. Rudy will be remembered for his winning smile, charm, his way with words, and his perseverance in the face of all adversity, he never gave up. He was a truly wonderful man. A Mass and Memorial Service will be held at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery Chapel at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 14, 2002. Cemetery is located at 7999 Wyoming Blvd. NE.

Chavez -- Elvira G. Chavez, 90, peacefully departed on Thursday, December 5, 2002. She was born on September 8, 1912 in San Rafael, NM, graduated from Los Lunas High School in 1929 and resided in Albuquerque. Elvira was preceded in death by her parents, former Valencia County Sheriff Pablo and Mrs. Maria Gallegos; three brothers; two sisters; her husband, Benjamin Chavez; and sons, Candido and Paul Chavez. She is survived by her two sisters, Rachel and Vina Blea; her loving children, Mary and husband, Eloy Barela, Robert Chavez, Margaret and husband, Henry Chavez, all of Albuquerque, Benjamin and wife, Frances Chavez of MontClair, VA; and daughter-in-law, Evelyn Chavez of Scottsdale, AZ. Elvira is also survived by 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. As a member of Risen Savior Catholic Church, Elvira was a Eucharistic Minister and an active member of Our Lady's Outreach and Cursillo Movement. Garcia -- Dolores C. Garcia, 68, a resident of Belen, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, December 4, 2002. She was a member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. Her strongest passion was her loving granddaughters, great-granddaughters, and great-grandsons. She was preceded in death by her parents, Guillermo B. and Crucita B. Chavez; her two sons, Patrick Thomas and Joey A. Garcia; her brother, Matias Chavez; and her sister, Susan Peralta. Dolores is survived by her loving daughter, Marcella Maldonado and husband, Adolfo; her granddaughters, Twila Maldonado and her companion, Tony Garcia; Mary Ann Maldonado and her companion, Anthony Gonzales, all of Jarales; Mellissa and Kristen Garcia; and Bernice Montoya, all of Belen; four great-granddaughters; four great-grandsons; one brother, Albino R. Ingram -- Hattie L. Ingram, 85, a resident of Albuquerque since 1966, died Wednesday, December 4, 2002. She is survived by her daughter, Jane Dowling and husband Jim of Albuquerque; granddaughter, Amy Dowling Rourke and husband, Jason of Albuquerque; grandsons, Andrew Dowling and Peter Dowling, both of Albuquerque; great-grandchildren, Hannah Rourke, Melissa Rourke, Zachary Rourke, and Vanessa Rourke, all of Albuquerque; brother, Robert Nelson, of Ellis, KS; brother-in-law, Harold Ingram and wife, Jeanie of Wichita, KS; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Ingram was born in Ellis, KS to Axel and Hannah Nelson. She married Herb Ingram July 7, 1940 on the family's homestead. He preceded her in death September 13, 2000, after 60 years of marriage. They managed theatres in Kansas for many years. In 1958, during the Oil Boom, the family moved to Farmington and then to Albuquerque in 1966. She had been a bookkeeper in Farmington and Albuquerque, having worked for Zales, AAA of New Mexico and Van Atta Labs. She was a great fan of all sports, especially baseball. Mrs. Ingram was a very loving and beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend. Services will be held Saturday, December 7, 2002, at 2:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE, with Pastor Bruce Wilder officiating. Jakymiw -- Steven Richard Jakymiw, Jr. 45, a resident of Rio Rancho for the past 29 years, passed away on Sunday, December 1, 2002. Steven was born April 19, 1957 the son of Steven and Alice Jakymiw, Sr. in New York City, New York. Steven came to New Mexico from New York. He had worked in construction before his death. He was preceded in death by his mother, Alice in December of 2000. Steven is survived by his father, Steven, Sr. of Rio Rancho; two children, Stephanie Jakymiw of Albuquerque, and Michael Mitchell Jakymiw of Rio Rancho; one brother, Michael Jakymiw and wife, Denise of Rio Rancho; niece, Danielle; and nephew, Jason. Kailey -- Ross Kailey, 78, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, passed away at home on Wednesday, December 4, 2002. Born in Freeport, Illinois on August 1, 1924, he and his late wife, Ruth Helm Kailey, moved to New Mexico shortly after their wedding in 1948. Ross graduated from the University of New Mexico School of Business, and he and Ruth were blessed with five boys. Frogg was a jazz aficionado who traveled the country to attend jazz festivals and related events. His extensive tape and record collection of jazz masters was always a source of pride to him, and he was instrumental in bringing Louie Armstrong to New Mexico for a concert in the late 50s. He also loved to play golf, powering off the tees. He took great pride in the fact that he had successfully reached all greens on par 5's in 2 at all the municipal courses in Albuquerque! He enjoyed researching his family lineage and spent many hours scouring telephone books and libraries during his travels, looking for other Kaileys. Ross is survived by his #1 and Best Son, Jeff Helm Kailey, of the family home; Bixx Louis Kailey, his wife, Annette, and their sons, David, his wife, Gina, and Bernard, of Montana; Ross Jon Kailey, his wife, Kristin, and their son, Jake, of Santiago, Chile; Tomm Elmer Kailey, his wife, Barbara, of Albuquerque, and their daughters, Alison, a student at UNM, and Andy and Rachel Kailey Foraker, parents of Ross's first great-grandchild, Aubrey, of Virginia; and Timm Emerson Kailey, his wife, Bernadette, and their children, Rhiannon and Paul Ross, of Pecos, NM. He also leaves behind two special nephews, Eric and Max Kailey of Paris, France. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, December 8, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. in the UNM Alumni Chapel. Machin -- Edwin Dale Machin, a resident of Albuquerque for 52 years, went home to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on December 2, 2002. He died of complications due to his lung disease at the hospital. Ed was born on May 30, 1928 in Columbus, OH. He met his beloved wife, Rose Marie Machin of 53 years while he was in the service, stationed in St. Louis, MO. After going to school in Chicago, IL, the couple moved to Albuquerque. Ed was employed by Sandia National Laboratories for 36 years. He worked as a member of the technical staff, a job he loved to do. During his retirement, Ed was actively involved in the New Mexico Wildlife Federation. He served as president for one year in the Albuquerque Wildlife Federation and two years with the New Mexico Wildlife Federation. Ed had a passion to preserve and protect our New Mexico Wildlife. Ed was an avid hunter and fisherman. He looked forward to the yearly trips to hunt with his son, grandson, son-in-law, and friends. Ed is survived by his wife, Rose Marie Machin of Albuquerque; his daughter, Patricia Perovich and husband, Joey Perovich; grandson, Damon Deveaux; granddaughters, Alicia Deveaux and Elena Perovich of Taos. His son, Glenn Machin and wife, Terri Machin; grandson, Jude Machin and wife, Amber of Lubbock, TX; granddaughter, Michelle Machin; grandson, Christopher Machin of Albuquerque; his daughter, Nancy Caldwell and husband, Kevin Caldwell; granddaughter, Kylee Caldwell and grandson, Casey Caldwell of Albuquerque. Ed was a loving and compassionate husband, father, and grandfather. He will be missed, but the lessons he taught his family will endure forever. Richards -- Ollie J. Richards, age 82, born on November 12, 1920 in Oatman, Arizona passed away on Saturday, November 30, 2002 in Westminster, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Clifton W. Richards. She is survived by one son, Clifton E. Selby -- Donald Frazier Selby, 71, died on Monday, December 2, 2002 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Belhaven, NC on June 14, 1931, he was a resident of Albuquerque for 48 years. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the United States Navy for four years. He had a passion for cars and worked a long career as an automotive mechanic, eventually retiring as a journeyman automotive mechanic from the Public Service Company of New Mexico in 1993. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Nancy Harrison Selby; two sons, Matthew Harrison Selby, and Andrew Frazier Selby and wife, Lori, all of Albuquerque; one granddaughter, Olivia Jane Selby of Albuquerque; one brother, Charles F. Selby Jr. and wife, Georgia of Albuquerque; three half-sisters, Carol Gulley Fast and husband, Alfred of Blaine, MN, Pamela Selby Hemmings of Chesapeake, VA, and Angela Selby Shelton and husband, James of Ramona, Ca; one half-brother, Thomas D. Selby and wife, Lahoma of Chesapeake, VA; one uncle, Johnnie E. Slavic -- Jane L. Slavic, 87, a resident of Albuquerque for 32 years, passed away on December 4, 2002. She is survived by her husband of 23 years, Joseph Slavic of Albuquerque; daughter, Patricia Longerot of Albuquerque; sister, Lorraine O'Brien of New London, WI; grandson, Brad Symolon of Apache Junction, AZ; granddaughters, Fawn Ryan of Orlando, FL and Tory Moore of Queens Valley, AZ; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Irene Casey and Ruth Goday. Mrs. Slavic was originally from Milwaukee, WI and enjoyed her family, friends, gardening, and especially being an active member of the TOPS Club. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held Monday, December 9, 2002, 6:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Funeral Chapel. Hillcrest Funeral Home 225 San Mateo NE 265-5959

Standfier -- Sue (CoCo) Standfier born August 9, 1915, a resident of Albuquerque since the 1940's, died peacefully on December 5, 2002. Sue was a fun loving person who always had a smile and joke for all. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; son, Billie Standfier; son-in-law, Jerry Perks. Sue is survived by her daughters, Kay Perks of Albuquerque, Freddie and her husband, Jim Fudge of Carlsbad; son, Dick Standfier of Wenatchee, WA; grandchildren, Jerri Sue, Randy and Lee Fudge, Kathy and Tim Duvall, Jerry and Julie, Dan Perks, Lori and Bob Lynch, Tammy and David Beattie, Terri and Henry Latner; great-grandchildren, Jennifier and Kimber Duvall, Candice, Sean Perks, Brittany and Braden Perks, Jennifer, Chris, Brandy and Jimmy Fudge, Noah and Jonah Latner, Kyle and Nathan Beattie; and her sister, Dott Wicks of Yuma, AZ. A Memorial Service will be held at the Girard Baptist Church, 1300 Girard Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM on Sunday, December 8, 2002 at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Tony Chavez officiating. Following the Service, friends are invited to a gathering at the home of Tim and Kathy Duvall in celebration, prayer and remembrance of Sue's life. Szalczinger -- Catherine"Cathey" Ellen Mead Szalczinger, was born July 23, 1954 in Albuquerque and passed away Sunday, December 1, 2002. Cathey was, and always will be, a brilliant ray of sunshine and spiritual light for all of her family. She was nicknamed"Petunia", a special and fragile flower, by her siblings. Cathey attended Manzano High School in Albuquerque and Wasatch Academy in Utah. At Wasatch, she was elected Homecoming Queen. From a very young age, Cathey loved to swim, write and she had a great deal of creative talent. Cathey was a very kind and loving person, and always full of fun. She juggled home, work and raising her son while living in Virginia and after she moved back to Albuquerque. Cathey and Joe met in Albuquerque and were married in New York in May 1995. They had fun with their speedboat and spending a lot of time at the lake. Her life was further filled with her many pets, the latest being her dearest,"Munchie". Her parents, Bruce Bundy Mead and Margaret Shirley Mead preceded her in death. She will be truly missed by"Mom", Elizabeth Toth, and"Dad", Louis Toth of New York, all of Joe's family. Cathey is survived by her loving husband, Joseph and her wonderful son, Sean Staats of Virginia. Surviving also are her siblings, Martin Mead of Colorado, Judith Ann Mead and her partner, Howard Staap, Lee Vandevender and her husband, Walt, and Mary Margaret Petty and her husband, Ralph, of Roswell. Cathey has three nephews, Michael Mead, Matthew Mead and Ben Petty; and two nieces, Wendi Whitmore and Jennifer Petty. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, December 7, 2002, at 11:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE, with Pastor Clyde Stanfield officiating. Interment will follow at 1:30 p.m., at Santa Fe Memorial Gardens in Santa Fe. Friends may visit French Mortuary, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE, Saturday, December 7, 2002, from 8:00 a.m. until time of service. Cathey will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She will always be Petunia.
