Bish -- Robert LeRoy Bish passed away on June 10, 2002 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, two days after his 85th birthday. He joins his wife, Paula; and their first daughter, Pamela Dawn, who died when she was just a few days old. He left behind two children, Robert D. Bish of Farmington, NM and Jill Shortencarier and husband, Mickey of Albuquerque, NM; five grandchildren, Hillary Bish of Albuquerque, Jon Collis of Golden, CO, Jamie Rogers and husband, Zach of Denver, CO, Steven Collis and wife, Jerusha of Provo, UT, and Michaelann Shortencarier of Albuquerque; and one great-granddaughter, Grace Elizabeth Rogers of Denver; he is also survived by one sister, Doris Weaver and husband, Jim of Stamford, CT; two brothers, Donald and wife, Nancy of Roswell, NM and Paul E. and wife, Geneva of Albuquerque; and dozens of friends who knew him by many names from"Papa" to"one of The Legends." He was born on June 8, 1917 in Liberal, Kansas to LeRoy Earl and Minnie Petty Bish. He moved to Las Vegas, New Mexico in 1923 when he was six, and his father found work at a butter factory where he made 40 dollars a week to support a family with five children. LeRoy delivered milk bottles and worked with his father for spending money. During the 1920's, he spent his days building model airplanes and reading every story he could about the pilots that flew during the Great War. The Flying Aces, the Curtis Flying Boat, the Battle of Verdun-these were the stories LeRoy learned to love, and flying became his dream. During the Depression, his teenage years, his dream intensified. Whether helping his father make cream or sitting in class, he envisioned himself high in the clouds, flying inside the real version of one of his models. In 1937, he enrolled at the University of New Mexico and later transferred to New Mexico Highlands University, where he met his future bride. Five years passed. For the world those years meant Pearl Harbor, the Nazis, World War II, friends who came home, and friends who didn't. For most young men they meant enlistment, delusions of grandeur, battle. For LeRoy they meant three times of rising hope and three times of disappointment. He enlisted in the army as a pilot in 1938 and was given a medical discharge from Moffitt Field just a few months later due to migraines. He returned to Las Vegas and while"jerking sodas" downtown, was asked by the Navy to fly for them. After training and time in Long Beach, Jacksonville, and Corpus Christi; after 100 hours in the air, he was discharged again because of migraines. He tried to enlist a third time but was again rejected. Every discharge was for medical reasons, and each remarked that he was of"outstanding character." At the end of the five years, he found himself working in the Navy's assembly and repair department in Corpus Christi, Texas. On February 9, 1942 LeRoy married Paula Bloomfield from whom he later learned a valuable lesson about money-"The money she made was hers. The money I made was ours." The following decades brought the end of the war; three children; a position for $120 a month with Continental Airlines, which at the time had only three planes; a job with the Civil Aeronautics Administration; and a six-year stint as owner of a trading post in Mancos Creek, Colorado. In 1962, he rejoined the Federal Aeronautics Administration (formerly the CAA) as an air traffic controller at Truth or Consequences, NM. In 1964, he transferred to the Department of Defense as a Range Controller at Stallion Site, White Sands Missile Range. He retired from WSMR as Chief of the Stallion Site station. In his later years, LeRoy watched his grandchildren grow and go to college. A self-proclaimed"desert rat," he toured with his wife across the highways of the Southwest in their motor home, his golf clubs in hand, his driving cap on his head. Between 1992 and 1996, he suffered a stroke that left him blind in one eye, developed macular degeneration, worked through knee surgery, and lost his wife of 54 years. And yet he never stopped inviting his friends over for steak, and they never stopped wanting to go. For those who knew him, his house was the place to be. Though alive before even television was invented, he learned to surf the internet, download pictures, and master word processors, all while legally blind. He bridged the generation gap and was friends with people of all ages, from all walks of life. He continued to golf, talk of flying, and make people laugh. And just a week before his body gave out for good, it was no surprise that he was talking to his nurses about the 100 hours he flew in Long Beach and Jacksonville. Six months before he died, when asked in an interview what lesson he would like to pass on to his posterity, he said simply:"Get along with people. I always tried not to offend anyone." Those who knew him know he succeeded. He will be greatly missed. A Memorial Service following cremation will be held in Socorro, NM, his home of 38 years. The service will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 22, 2002, at the LDS chapel, El Camino Real, Socorro, NM. The family is grateful for the loving care given to LeRoy by Sandia Hospice nurses and staff. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Protective Association of Socorro, P.O. Box 451, Socorro, NM 87801, or the charity of one's choice.

Dalton -- Johnny A. Dalton, a devoted father, husband and Rock of Gibraltar to his family, a resident of Alamogordo since 1936, died peacefully on Thursday, June 13, 2002, at the age of 88. Johnny was born April 9, 1914 in El Paso. He moved to Alamogordo in 1936 to work for Southwest Lumber Company and later formed an insurance and real estate firm, The Dalton Agency. For many years he and his wife Eve were sole proprietors of this thriving business which treated employees like immediate family and the community like extended family. As a tribute to the vitality of the real estate sector of their business, Johnny and Eve were recognized as Alamogordo Realtors of the Year in 1986. Johnny was a charter member of the Alamogordo Noon Lions Club, a Past Master of Sacramento Lodge #24, A.F. & A.M., Ballut Abyad Shrine, an the B.P.O. Elks Lodge #1897. He ofter said with conviction and pride,"We are small town folks. We help each other." He may have been a"small town folk" but his curious mind journeyed far. He loved words and delighted in subtle, humorous twists on words. For many years his day began with crossword puzzles. He spoke a good bit of Spanish and liked to give the words a twist. So, hasta luego became hasty lumbago, tengo bastante became all bastantied up, and so on. National Geographic was his mainstay to satisfy his curiosity about the world; lying on his back on warm summer nights with his"little tads" identifying constellations, he wondered at the mysteries of the worlds beyond; and he delighted in local, region, national and world history. He derived great pleasure from driving about Otero County recounting snippets of history related to mining, lumbering, ranching, and acts of generosity, chicanery and skullduggery. Somewhere along the journey, be it though greasewood or ponderosa pines, he would inevitably say with appreciation border on a love affair,"This is God's country." On June 13, 2002, Johnny Dalton, beckoned by his darling wife Eve, left Otero County for God's country beyond. They are once more inseparable. She could wait nor longer, but her gain is our loss. Hasty Lumbago, Johnny! Survivors include his loving children, John F. Dalton and his wife Cathy of Denver, Colorado, Jolene Maes and her husband Wayne of Corrales, and Bobbie Brister of Ruidoso; grandchildren, Dotty Nelson of Corrales, Tim Maes and his wife Catherine of Minnetonka, Minnesota, Heidi and Laurie Dalton of Long Beach, California, Shelly Malone and her husband Jackie of London, England, Jimmy Brister of El Paso, and Jolene Brister of Houston, Texas; and great grandchildren, Bryan, Connor and Parker Malone of London, England, Aaron and Michael Dalton of Long Beach, California, and Brett and Sutart Maes of Minnetonka, Minnesota. The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to Mariana Wills and her family, daughter Paulina and husband Dennis, who provided loving care for the past ten years, and to grandson Jimmy Brister, Johnny's constant companion for the past several months. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Eve, on June 13, 1992. Johnny and Eve were inseparable. Since her death he has visited her gravesite daily. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 1 p.m. in the Hamilton-O'Dell Chapel with the Rev. Tom Richardson officiating. Interment will follow in Monte Vista Cemetery. Friends may call today from 2 until 4 p.m. at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home, 1334 N. Scenic Dr., Alamogordo. Hibben -- Frank C. Hibben, archaeologist, anthropologist, author, outdoor adventurer, big-game hunter and philanthropist, died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at his Albuquerque home. Born on December 5, 1910 in Lakewood, Ohio, Dr. Hibben was the son of Fredrick Martin Hibben and Lucy West Hibben. Of Scottish decent, Hibben's ancestors first settled in America in the late 1600s and later in the area of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. The"Hibben House" (1755) still stands at 111 Hibben Street, the oldest on the Mount Pleasant side of the Charleston peninsula. The Hibben Presbyterian Church of Mount Pleasant holds regular services to this day. Frank Hibben first came to New Mexico in the mid-1930s on an expedition to collect small mammals and birds for the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. A 1933 Princeton University archaeology graduate, Hibben was so fascinated by the Native American cliff dwellings that he decided to attend graduate school at the University of New Mexico and make New Mexico his home. Dr. Hibben received a master's degree in zoology with field studies of the mountain lion from the University of New Mexico in 1936. He continued his education at Harvard, receiving his Ph.D. in archaeology in just one year, and then returned to New Mexico to begin his teaching career at UNM. During World War II, Hibben served as an admiral's aide in Washington, D.C. His duties were to memorize battle plans and carry them--only in his mind--to the commanding officers in the various war theaters. Following the war, Hibben devoted much of his time creating a museum of anthropology at UNM. He persuaded a friend, Gil Maxwell, who had discovered the San Juan oil field in northwestern New Mexico, to donate 50,000 shares of Occidental Petroleum stock, along with a collection of Navajo rugs, to the University. This was the beginning of the University's Maxwell Museum, of which Hibben served as director from 1961 to 1971. Beginning in 1946, Hibben made a number of trips to Africa for archaeological field work. He worked with Louis and Mary Leakey in their excavations in northern Kenya. Hibben was also a world renowned big-game hunter, setting many world records. As chairman of the Albuquerque Zoological Board (1960-1970), director of the Albuquerque Zoo (1977) and chairman of the New Mexico State Game and Fish Commission (1961-1971), Hibben was instrumental in introducing numerous exotic species to the wilds of New Mexico. Granted full-professor status at UNM in 1952, Hibben continued his lifelong love of teaching and, until recently, kept office hours and lectured. At the time of his death, Dr. Hibben held the title of Professor Emeritus. In 1994, the University honored Hibben with the Zimmerman Award, which is given to an alumnus who has"made a significant contribution to the world and has brought fame and honor to the University and state." Hibben was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor"Brownie" Hibben; his son, Patrick Hibben; and his two brothers. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his lifelong friend and helper, Nora Chino Wilson of Acoma Pueblo; and his stepchildren. Hibben's writings were first published in 1936. Over the ensuing decades, he authored hundreds of articles and numerous books dealing with the anthropology and archaeology of Europe, Africa, the United States and the American Southwest and on big-game hunting. Some of his books include The Lost Americans (1946), Treasure in the Dust (1951), Prehistoric Man in Europe (1958), Digging Up America (1960), Hunting in Africa (1962), Kiva Art of the Anasazi (1975) and a series of limited editions including the most recent Under the African Sun (1999). His articles appeared in the Saturday Evening Post, Reader's Digest, Field and Stream, Outdoor Life, the Denver Post, Empire and many sporting magazines and professional periodicals. During the last few years of his life, Hibben developed the plans for the Hibben Center at UNM and supplied the funding for the three-story complex nearing completion on the western edge of the campus next to the Maxwell Museum. The Hibben Center will be devoted to archaeological study and graduate research and will house collections Hibben discovered during the excavations of Pottery Mound. The Center will also be the home of the Hibben Trust, which will furnish annual grants to students working in the field of archaeological research. Visitation will be Sunday, June 16, 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., at Strong-Thorne Mortuary, 1100 Coal Avenue SE, Albuquerque. Services for Frank Hibben will be Monday, June 17, 3:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 215 Locust NE, (one block north of Central and I-25), Albuquerque, with a reception following in Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, should friends wish, memorial gifts can be made to UNM for the Hibben Trust for scholarships, c/o The University of New Mexico Foundation, Inc., 700 Lomas NE, Suite 200, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87131.
