NARANJO -- Carlos Naranjo, formerly of Albuquerque, beloved son, brother, uncle, friend, mentor and humanitarian passed away suddenly and went to be with his Lord on September 19, 2003. Born on July 3, 1930 he was the son of the late Simon Naranjo and the late Marcelina (Lena) Limon. He was preceded in death by sisters, Sadie Martinez, and Louise Montoya; brothers, Albert and Ralph Naranjo. Born and raised in Albuquerque he graduated high school from El Rito Normal in northern NM. After high school, he served honorably in the US Army during the Korean War and was a recipient of the Bronze Star. Upon returning home, he attended Highlands University obtaining his teaching degree. Carlos then volunteered with the Peace Corps where he worked diligently for two years with the people of the Dominican Republic. He introduced the first ever basketball program and mobile library for the children of the Dominican Republic. Upon his return to the US he taught math and science in Tularosa, NM. Carlos later earned his Masters degree in school administration from Stanford University. He was also a Regional Fellow of the Ford Foundation. In his later years, he taught school in southern California, finally retiring in 1990 as a school principal. Carlos was very active after his retirement and never ceased being a community activist for those less fortunate. He was also an active member of the American Legion and VFW. Carlos devoted his life to working for the betterment of his fellow human beings, both young and old. Carlos had a full life giving wholeheartedly of himself whenever the need arose. He undoubtedly helped many others of which the true extent we many never know. Carlos is survived by his close and loving brother, Henry Limon, Jr.; sister, Irene Flores both of California; brother, Jose Limon; and sister, Christine Limon both of Albuquerque. Also several loving nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members, special thanks to niece, Sharon and husband, Raymond Wright and Irene Flores for giving so generously of their time and energy. Also his many dear and kind friends both in New Mexico and California. We have lost a kind and gentle soul but he has left us with the true meaning of love and charity. He will be greatly missed. GALLEGOS -- Celina B. Gallegos, age 71, a former resident of La Madera died Monday, September 22, 2003 in Albuquerque. She was born on May 11, 1932 in Taos, NM; daughter of Serafin and Rosario Brito. She married Jose Delio Gallegos on January 18, 1949 and had six children. Celina was a former postmaster in La Madera and along with her husband, owned and operated La Madera and was an Auxiliary at the Morada of Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe in La Madera. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jose Delio Gallegos; brother, Antonio "Tony": Brito; and sister, Lydia Lemos; parents, Serafin and Rosario Brito; great-granddaughter, Gabriela. She is survived by six children, Jane Garcia and husband, David, Jerry Gallegos and wife, Prescilla, Joseph Gallegos and wife, Carolyn, Charles Gallegos and wife, Anita, Charlene Trujillo and husband, Mariano, Annette Trujillo and companion, Manuel Garcia. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She is survived by brothers, Clifford Brito and wife, Emily, Rudy Brito and wife, Bessie, and Bernie Brito and wife, Emily. She is also survived by special cousins and caregivers, Marina and Johnny Trujillo and family. She also had many other relatives and friends. She was raised as a newborn by her aunt, Tina Duran, deceased, and was blessed with other brothers, and sisters, Bernie, Bob, Lorraine, Lilly, Alicia and Teresa. She was also raised with cousins, Fred and Jake Brito, deceased. Other survivors include brothers, and sisters-in-law, Simon, Eleuterio, Esther, Fabiola, David and Ernest Gallegos. A Rosary will be recited on Tuesday, September 23, 2003 at 7:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home. A second Rosary will be recited on Wednesday, September 24, 2003 at 7:00 p.m. at the La Morada in La Madera. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, September 25, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at the La Morada in La Madera with interment to follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. The follow will be serving as pallbearers, Kenny Eljuri, Chris Gallegos, Ronnie Gallegos, Greg Gallegos, Alan Garcia and Jason Trujillo. Plough -- Ms. Janet Mary Plough, a resident of Albuquerque, and a citizen of England, died August 24, 2003. She is survived by her husband, Charles T. Plough, Jr.; son, Mark Lumley of Albuquerque; son, Simon Lumley and wife, Leigh; and grandson, Ian of Grand Rapids, MI. Ms. Plough was a member of First Unitarian Church. She was very active in community affairs until afflicted with Multiple Sclerosis in 1992 shortly after coming to Albuquerque. All her efforts in Norfolk, NE, especially with the Task Force on Domestic Violence, were recognized in 1990 by the Governor when she was made an Admiral in the Nebraska Navy. A Memorial Service will be held August 26, 2003 at 7:00 p.m. at First Unitarian Church. Archunde -- Mrs. Esfrada Archunde, 88, a resident of Albuquerque and a former resident of Seboyeta, New Mexico passed away on August 24, 2003 peacefully at home in the arms of her loving family. Mrs. Archunde is the beloved mother to Pauline Padilla and husband, Cecil, Myrna Chavez and husband, Frank, Pilar Griego, Margaret Romero, Lorenzo Archunde and wife, Billye. Mrs. Archunde is also survived by her sister, Becky Ruby of Winslow, Arizona; 14 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; sisters-in- law, Mina Archunde and Adela Marquez; other sisters-in- law; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mrs. Archunde was a member of the Catholic Church. A visitation for Mrs. Archunde will be Wednesday evening in the Gabaldon Memorial Chapel from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. A final Visitation will be Thursday morning from 9:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Seboyta, New Mexico with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the Seboyeta Cemetery. Piazzese -- Louis Anthony Piazzese, 54, peacefully died on August 15, 2003, at home in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. He was born on May 22, 1949, in Brooklyn, NY, to Anthony and Natalie Piazzese. He owned Emerald City Construction and left a legacy in Albuquerque and the surrounding area with his beautiful work and craftsmanship. He is survived by his wife Paula (Wilson) Williams. They were married on May 29, 1998. Also surviving are his daughters Denise McLain, husband Duane, of Long Beach, California; Laura Simon, husband Patrick, of Moorpark, California; Katrina Piazzese of Tijeras, New Mexico; Gerald Williams, of Lackland AFB, Texas; Kara Williams and Nicole Williams of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; two grandchildren, Michael McLain, and Devin Simon; four siblings, Anne De Maria of New York, John Piazzese of New York, Thomas Piazzese of California, and Anthony"Tony" Piazzese of Oregon. He was preceded in death by his mother and father. A private memorial was held at his home. He will be laid to rest at Whiskeytown Lake, California, with his best friend Moe. Memorial donations can be made to the Albuquerque Chapter of the"Make a Wish" Foundation.

Bernstein -- Dr. Morton E. Bernstein, 89, a resident of Albuquerque and Sun City West, AZ, died Monday, July 28, 2003. He is survived by his daughters, Lonni Brill and husband, Zil of Los Angeles, CA and Elena Tommasi and husband, Robert of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Shira Brill and fiance, Chad, Rina Simon and husband, Jason, all of Los Angeles, CA and Ryan Tommasi of Albuquerque; sister, Blanche Boroff of Brooklyn, NY and Owen Bernstein and wife, Bebe of Queens, NY. Dr. Bernstein practiced dentistry in New York for over 40 years. He was also an artist and sculptor. Dr. Bernstein was very active in the Jewish Community in Albuquerque, as well as in Arizona. He was president of the American Dental Association and the American Society of Endodontics. Dr. Bernstein was very well liked and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Graveside Services will be held Wednesday, July 30, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. at Fairview Memorial Park, 700 Yale SE, with Rabbi Chaim Schmukler officiating. Martinez -- Richard Martinez, 70, a resident of Valencia, New Mexico for the past 20 years, passed away on Thursday, July 17, 2003. He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. He was an avid politician, administrator, and enjoyed gardening, writing, and spending time with his loving family. Richard is preceded in death by his parents, Eduardo and Victoria Martinez of Los Cerrillos, NM; his brothers, Simon; Eddie; Ben; Jim and Senator Alex Martinez. Richard is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Elia of the family home in Los Lunas, NM; his three sons, Edwin of Albuquerque, NM; Danny and his wife, Tracy of Tome, NM; and Victor of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; his daughter, Diana Martinez of Valencia, NM; his six grandchildren, Elena; Richard Daniel III; Nathaniel; Jezelle; Edward; and Miranda; his brother, David Martinez and his wife, Barbara of Texas; his sister, Celia Rios of Santa Fe, NM; his mother-in-law, Tercila Sanchez of Valencia, NM; and his sister and brothers-in-law, Martha Sedillo; Herman; Emilio; Gilbert; and Leo Sanchez. With the deepest respect for Richard's wishes, cremation has taken place. All services will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church beginning with a visitation on Sunday, July 20, 2003 at 5:30 p.m. followed by a rosary at 6:00 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, July 21, 2003 at 10:00am. Gallegos -- Vina S. Gallegos, age 72, beloved mother, grandmother, and sister was welcomed into the arms of the Lord our Savior, Thursday, July 10, 2003 while surrounded by her loving family. Vina was born in Sile, NM to the late Damacio and Elizabeth Segura. She is survived by her children, Joe Gallegos and wife, Roberta of Rio Rancho, Esther Segura and Herman Perea, Lupe Katsuleas and husband, James, and Elizabeth Lucero all of Albuquerque; her granddaughters, whom she raised as a daughter, Renee Gallegos and Immaculate Segura; her precious grandchildren, Damacio, Eileen, Brenda, Edwina, Elyra Gallegos, Alexander, Christopher Katsuleas, Bennie, Holly, and Valerie Lucero; great-grandchildren, Felicia, Dominique, Damacio Jr., Chanisty Gallegos, Angelo, Celest Lucero, Natasha Lucero, Libby Joe, Joseph Garcia, Santiago Segura and Angelica Garcia; and one brother, Libby Segura and wife, Ida of Albuquerque. Vina will will be greatly missed by her loving family. A rosary will be recited Sunday at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Alameda Mortuary; and on Monday at 7:00 p.m. at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Bernalillo. Vander Wagen -- Dr. Robert Charles Vander Wagen (Dr. Van), 72, skilled physician, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away Monday, June 16, 2003 in Bullhead City, Arizona. Born in Rehoboth, New Mexico, December 24, 1930. He spent his childhood in and around the Pueblo of Zuni, where his family has been since 1897. Rob's elementary education was spent being taught by his mother in a one-room school house in Zuni. He attended Wasatch Academy (Utah), Calvin College and Seminary, University of Michigan Medical School and University of California, Berkeley, School of Public Health. He specialized in Pediatrics and Public Health. He retired in 1982 ending a career of 24 years with the USPHS, Indian Health Service and the State of New Mexico. After retirement, through writing he shared his fascination of the southwest desert with all who love her honest faces. Rob was preceded in death by his brother, Ted; his father, Simon; his mother, Wilhelmina; and his son, Robert Charles II. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Betty; siblings; Larry Vander Wagen, Bernice Stock, and Ethel Carey; children, Barbara Vander Wagen-Bieniewski, Ruth Garza, Claudia Delaney, Norman Vander Wagen, and Glenna Little. The grandchildren, Wendy, Jacquelyn, Rebecca, Paula, Roxanne, Jared, Rachel, Sarah, Kent, Ross, Joshua, and Caszandra. Also one great-grandchild, Courtney Jo. A multitude of friends and family will remember him for his quick wit and marvelous stories that gladdened our hearts and nourished our souls. He managed to enrich the lives of everyone he met. A Memorial Service celebrating his life will be held at Hope Evangelical Church, 4710 Juan Tabo NE on Tuesday, June 24, 2003 at 6:00 p.m. A second Memorial Service is being planned for July in Zuni, New Mexico.
