CRISWELL -- Melinda Criswell, 53, passed away Thursday, January 29, 2004 as a result of a tragic accident. She was struck by an automobile while walking home from the grocery store on Wednesday, January 21. Melinda is survived by her parents, Glenn R. and Lena Stone Criswell, two sisters, Cathy Criswell Harper and Bonnie Criswell Mares and her husband, Edward S. Mares and nephew, Richard Matthew Harper; nieces, Laura and Kimberly Mares, all residents of Albuquerque. She is also survived by loyal friend, George Lucero of Albuquerque and her faithful old dog “Tess.” She was preceded in death by her grandparents, T. T. and Amelia McKinley Criswell and Charley D. and Lella Bowers Stone, all of Falls County, TX. Melinda was born in Marlin, Falls Co., TX on March 31, 1950. After living in Victoria and Houston, TX, she moved with her family to Albuquerque in 1954 at four years of age. She attended Albuquerque Public Schools and the University of New Mexico. After marriage, Melinda continued her education at California State University then graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1977. She was employed as a legal assistant in Los Angeles before returning to Albuquerque in 1981 when she worked at the local newspaper publishing company and did free lance writing before forming a contract office services business. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Melinda had a life long love of animals and nature. She pursued her interest in creative artistic endeavors and art history throughout her life. In high school she volunteered as a Candy Striper at Presbyterian Hospital and was a volunteer tutor in the Albuquerque Public Schools System. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, February 5, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE with the Reverend Norton Scrimshire of Trinity United Methodist Church officiating with Assistant Pastor Mark Mason of Calvary Chapel of Rio Rancho. HAMILTON -- James Hamilton, 80, of Silver City passed away at his daughter's home surrounded by loving family and friends Tuesday January 20, 2004. The family will receive friends 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 24, 2004 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 3755 N. Swan St. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 p.m. also at the Church with Bishop Kevin Brown officiating. Cremation will take place following the service and interment of cremains will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday January 31, 2004 in Grants Municipal Cemetery, Grants, NM. Mr. Hamilton was born June 12, 1923 in Metmore, NM. He was the son of William and Katherine (Aimo) Hamilton. He married Helen Zora Rogers December 1, 1943 in Gallup, NM. She preceded him in death August 1, 1990. He is survived by four children, Carroll Hamilton of Silver City; Roxann Fields and her husband, Willie of Grants, NM; Charles Hamilton and his wife, Carol of Silver City and Kathy Davis and her husband, Billy also of Silver City; one sister, Lore Mae Clark and her husband, Freddie of Aztec, NM; 13 grandchildren, Denise Gholson and her husband, George of Mesa, AZ; Helen Mares of Phoenix, AZ; Marissa Mares of Salt Lake City, UT; John Taylor Mares of Las Cruces, NM; James Fields and his wife, Dolores of Capitain, NM; Natalie Laney and her husband, David of Gilbert, AZ; Heather Wiseman and her husband, David of Springerville, UT; Sterling Hamilton of Las Cruces; Ashley Hamilton of Provo, UT; Sgt. Todd Davis serving with the 82nd Airborne Division in Baghdad, Iraq; Jordan Davis of Las Cruces; KaiDee Davis of Las Cruces; nine great-grandchildren; brother and sisters-in-law, L.H. and Jean Rogers of Silver City; Patsy and C.C. Sullivan of Gila, NM; Gertrude Tiede of Gallup, NM; Ginger and Andy Lucero and numerous other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Helen; one sister Agnes Boyd and two brothers Willie Hamilton and Johnny Hamilton. Mr. Hamilton was raised on a dairy in Coal Basin (north of Gallup). He attended school in Gallup and later received an Honorary High School Diploma from Western New Mexico University. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. After departure from the Navy he was a heavy equipment operator and later started his own company, James Hamilton Construction Co. In 1957 he moved his family to Grants to work in the mining industry, he continued to build roads and highways in northern New Mexico and Arizona. In the fall of 1966 the company began work on the Tyrone Railroad with the opening of the Phelps Dodge Mine and the relationship has continued to the present. His company has received numerous awards for quality and safety in the highway and mining industry. Some of the things he enjoyed doing were playing golf, flying his airplane, traveling and watching sports. He enjoyed being with people and his family. He never met a stranger. He was soft-hearted and charitable to many. Honorary Pallbearers for Mr. Hamilton will be L.H. Rogers; C. C. Sullivan; Tommy Hamilton; Vernon Hamilton; Todd Hamilton; Bill Hopwood; Bruce Hale; Louis Wood; Alan Herman; George Hanosh and Lester Stuart. Mr. Armijo was a member of the Plasterers and Cement Masons Union Local #254. He enjoyed gardening and always kept a large garden at his home. BACA -- Ned Baca, age 73, beloved and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend passed away unexpectedly, Tuesday, December 2, 2003 in Albuquerque. Ned was born in Santa Fe, NM and was a resident of Pena Blanca. He was a proud Veteran of the United States Army; an active parishioner and supporter of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Pena Blanca, who also helped in the rebuilding of the church. Ned was the owner and operator of Baca's General Store. He was a gentle, loving, dedicated family man; who's love was shown through just his smile; always welcoming everyone who visited Pena Blanca. He will live forever in our hearts. Ned was preceded in death by his parents, Ricardo and Maria (Carrillo) Baca; and his in-laws, Ramon and Adelena (Montoya) Mares. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Rose Baca of the family home; his son, Stephen Baca and wife Delilah; his precious grandchildren, Amber and Stephen Baca; his brothers, Pilar Baca and wife Alice, Richard Baca and wife Angie, Joaquin Baca and wife Hattie; sisters Connie Anaya and husband Henry, Flora Maestas and husband Lidoro; brothers-in-law, Richard Mares and wife Josie, Ray Mares and wife Martha; sisters-in-law, Edwina Mora and Alicia Garcia; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Ned will be greatly missed by his loving family and by those who knew and loved him. A rosary for Ned will be recited Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Pena Blanca, NM. LUCERO -- Julian J. Lucero Sr., 62, went home to be with the Lord on November 26, 2003. He was born on August 24, 1941 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Jimmy J. Lucero Jr. Mr. Lucero in survived by his mother, Cecilia Mares; his lifetime companion, Gina Katherine Cordova; sons, Anthony Gonzales and wife, Joilyne, Julian Joe Lucero Jr. and wife, Valerie. Gino Anthony Lucero and wife, Angela and Jimmy J. Lucero; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mr. Lucero will be deeply missed by his loving family. A rosary will be recited on Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Garcia Mortuary. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 12:00 noon at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. MARES -- Deborah Lynn Mares, 49, went to be with Jesus on October 11, 2003. She was born on October 17, 1953, in Santa Fe, New Mexico to Robert and Jeanette Fay Mares of Los Lunas, New Mexico. She was residing in Albuquerque, New Mexico with her extended family and friends of ARCA at the Fairbanks home. Debbie loved animals, especially dogs, and one of her favorite past times was watching the Animal Planet. She is survived by her parents; four brothers, Jim Mares and his wife, Jennifer of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Edward Mares and his wife, Sandra of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; Brian Mares and his wife, Connie of Bernalillo, New Mexico; and Joe Mares and his wife, Jackie of Albuquerque, New Mexico; four sisters, Liz and her husband, Mike Olmstead of Portland Oregon; Linda Ruth Arballo of Santa Fe, New Mexico; Audrey and her husband, Ted Olsen of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Barbara and her husband, Dennis Garcia of Los Lunas, New Mexico. She is also survived by very special friends and caretakers at ARCA and the Fairbanks home, and numerous aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, and cousins. MARES -- Aurora P. Mares, 90 years old, went home to the Lord on Friday, October 3, 2003. She was preceded in death by her parents, Andres and Ignacita Pacheco; brothers, Emilio, Antonio and Andres Pacheco; sisters, Lucia Quintana, Louisa Sanchez, and Ignacita Silva; spouse, Lalo Mares; two children, Viola and Robert Archuleta;five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Aurora is survived by four children; son, Loyd Mares, daughter, Dolores Sandoval, son, Archie Mares and wife Toni, and son, Richard Mares and wife Rita; 14 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and friends. A Rosary will be recited on Monday, October 6, 2003 at 7:00 p.m. A Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 7, 2003 at 10:00 a.m., with interment to follow at Mt Calvary Cemetery. MOFFETT -- Barbara Moffett, 91, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, passed away on Sunday, September 28, 2003. She waited to join her husband Robert Lee Moffett, on their 68th Wedding Anniversary. Barbara was born December 20, 1911 the daughter of Eutimio and Olympia C de Baca Mares in Albuquerque. She was a member of St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church, the Felician Sisters Ladies League, and she taught CCD. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert in 1988. She is survived by nine children, Regina Nelson and husband, Lawrence, Rosemary Langley and husband, Monroe, Isabel Samon and husband, Lee, Estelle Cartledge and husband, Albert, Betty Carlson and husband, Fred, Raymond Moffett and Carol Bewley, Barbara Toroni and husband, Dennis, James Moffett, Theresa Sandoval and husband, Ray; one sister, Antonia Mares; 28 grandchildren, and 30 great-grandchildren. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. this evening, Tuesday, September 30, 2003 in the Chapel of Vista Verde Mortuary, Sara Rd. at Meadowlark Ln., Rio Rancho.
