BLACK -- Truett L. Black, 77, longtime resident of Santa Fe, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, January 29, 2004. Truett loved the city of Santa Fe and served as a minister and music educator for many years. Throughout his life he loved the Lord and was a light to those around him. Truett is survived by his wife of over 55 years Geraldine of Santa Fe; sons David and his wife Claudia of Albuquerque, and Jim and his wife Martha of Santa Fe; grandchildren Matthew, Fresno, Katie, Erin, and Jacob. A celebration of Truett's life will take place at a memorial service at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, February 1, 2004, at Calvary Baptist Church, located at 1313 Apache Avenue, in Santa Fe. CANNON -- Carol S. Cannon, 85, of San Marcos, formerly of Albuquerque, New Mexico, passed away on Friday, January 30, 2004, at her home in San Marcos. She was born on September 29, 1918 to William Thomas and Laura (French) Shepherd in Blanchard, Oklahoma. Her husband, William Kirtley (1951) preceded her in death. She is survived by her son, Thomas C. Hamilton and wife, Patricia of Buda, Texas; two daughters, Katherine Evans and husband, Bill of Doyline, Louisiana and Julie Kirtley D'Surney and husband, Chris of Norfolk, Virginia; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Cannon was an avid bridge player, an accomplished ballroom dancer and a dog lover. She was a very strong lady, independent, kind and loving and was a trooper when it came to raising her children. Her memory will forever live in their hearts. She also spent much of her time volunteering for the Navy Relief Society and with the National MS program. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Animal Humane Society. CRISWELL -- Melinda Criswell, 53, passed away Thursday, January 29, 2004 as a result of a tragic accident. She was struck by an automobile while walking home from the grocery store on Wednesday, January 21. Melinda is survived by her parents, Glenn R. and Lena Stone Criswell, two sisters, Cathy Criswell Harper and Bonnie Criswell Mares and her husband, Edward S. Mares and nephew, Richard Matthew Harper; nieces, Laura and Kimberly Mares, all residents of Albuquerque. She is also survived by loyal friend, George Lucero of Albuquerque and her faithful old dog “Tess.” She was preceded in death by her grandparents, T. T. and Amelia McKinley Criswell and Charley D. and Lella Bowers Stone, all of Falls County, TX. Melinda was born in Marlin, Falls Co., TX on March 31, 1950. After living in Victoria and Houston, TX, she moved with her family to Albuquerque in 1954 at four years of age. She attended Albuquerque Public Schools and the University of New Mexico. After marriage, Melinda continued her education at California State University then graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1977. She was employed as a legal assistant in Los Angeles before returning to Albuquerque in 1981 when she worked at the local newspaper publishing company and did free lance writing before forming a contract office services business. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Melinda had a life long love of animals and nature. She pursued her interest in creative artistic endeavors and art history throughout her life. In high school she volunteered as a Candy Striper at Presbyterian Hospital and was a volunteer tutor in the Albuquerque Public Schools System. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, February 5, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE with the Reverend Norton Scrimshire of Trinity United Methodist Church officiating with Assistant Pastor Mark Mason of Calvary Chapel of Rio Rancho. DONIVAN -- Flora Lee Donivan, 80, a resident of Albuquerque for 30 years, died Saturday, January 31, 2004. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Charles Donivan of Albuquerque; daughter, Junith Rubin and husband, Larry of Grand Junction, CO; son, David Donivan of Albuquerque; son, Stephen Donivan and wife, Mary of Grand Junction, CO; son, John Donivan and wife, JoAnn of Oakland, CA; son, Robert Donivan and Shirley Lovato of Edgewood; grandchildren, Michelle Murillo, Michael Murillo and Stephen Donivan, Jr.; one great-granddaughter, Brianna Donivan; sisters, Lois Wood and Lorine Hazen of Baton Rouge, LA. She is preceded in death by three brothers. Flora worked for the Signal Corp in Washington, DC during WWII. FOSMO -- Violet Fosmo passed away on January 27, 2004. She was born in Palmyra, Illinois on December 13, 1913, where she lived until moving to Albuquerque in the mid 1950's. She is preceded in death by her husband, Kelley T. Fosmo; her parents; sister; and brother. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and cared for her including her family in Wisconsin, Illinois and here in Albuquerque. Cremation has taken place. GALLEGOS -- Mrs. Corine M. Gallegos, 82, a resident of Albuquerque passesd away on January 28, 2004. Mrs. Gallegos is survived by her two daughters, Lorraine Barela, Annie Cordova and husband, Andrew; two sons, Narciso Gallegos and wife, Lupe, Fred Gallegos and wife, Yolanda; one sister, Laura Baca and husband, Mike; eleven grandchildren, Tina, Joseph, Lisa, Marc, Aaron, Evan, Anthony, Martin, Marie, Cindy and Jerome; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mrs. Gallegos was a member of the Catholic Church, a member of the Holy Family Choir for twenty five years. A visitation for Mrs. Gallegos will be Sunday afternoon from 2:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 562 Atrisco SW with a Rosary to be recited at 3:00 p.m. by Gabriella Nieto. GULLAKSEN -- Leona Gullaksen, 86, a resident of Albuquerque, died Saturday, January 31, 2004. She is survived by her son, Herbert Gullaksen and wife, Joan of Texas; daughter, Linda Sunstrom and husband, James of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Cynthia, Craig and wife, Tracey, Debora and husband, Mike, Pamela and husband, Kyle, Tammy, Chris and wife, Judy and Bonnie and husband, Kurt; eioght great-grandchildren, Brandon, Brock, Emily, Hannah, Audrey, Tyler, Chase and John; sister, Ruth Steffenson of Florida and many friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Herb Gullaksen on October 16, 1996. HAGOOD -- George Wendell Hagood, 98, was born in Indian Territory prior to Oklahoma Statehood and died in a local hospital January 27, 2004 after a short illness. He was the son of a country doctor. He is survived by his wife, Nadine Hagood, with whom he had celebrated 66 years of marriage; and two daughters, Sarah Elizabeth Janpol of Albuquerque, Nancy Goolsby and her husband, Robert; and one beloved grandson, Mark Goolsby all of Idabel, OK; one sister, Ann Jones of Nakomis, FL. Dr. Kenneth Hagood, their son, preceded his father in death. Wendell received his Bachelors degree from Southeastern State University in Durant, OK, his Masters degree from Oklahoma State University, and his law degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1935, where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. Before receiving his law degree, he taught in the State School for the Blind and was later Principal of the elementary school he had attended as a child. After law school, he was in private law practice in Durant. He was employed in 1941 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and was transferred to Albuquerque in 1945 where he served with the Real Estate Division of the Corps until he retired in 1971. At the time of his retirement, he was Chief of the Acquisition Branch with many statewide responsibilities which included acquiring land for the White Sands Missile Range. He was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served in various offices. He was a volunteer for the Storehouse for many years and served on the Board of Directors. He was an active member of Knife and Fork and served faithfully as secretary. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution serving as State President, a National Trustee, and as Vice President General of the Tri-State Organization of New Mexico, Colorado, and Arizona. Wendell lived a beautiful life with an extraordinary love for his family, life, Canadian fishing trips, humor and writing poetry. Cremation has taken place and a private Memorial Service and celebration of this outstanding man's life was conducted by Rev. Paul Debenport at the family home.

HARRIS -- Ann Harris, 69, a resident of Albuquerque since 1973, died Thursday, January 29, 2004. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Larry Harris of Albuquerque; children, Kathy Hill and husband, Jerry of Portland, OR, Laurie Adams and husband, Steve of Dallas, TX and Mike Harris and wife, Jeanette of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Cameron and Kara Adams of Dallas, TX and Robert and Scott Harris of Albuquerque; and mother, Mary I. White of Dallas. Ann enjoyed playing cards, knitting, crocheting, painting and reading. She bravely battled M.S. for forty years. LEEPER -- Leland M. Leeper, 70, passed away Thursday, January 29, 2004 peacefully at home. His wife, Toney and their children and grandchildren survive Leland. MOREE -- Lillian Russell Moree, 102, a resident of Albuquerque since 1973, died Thursday, January 29, 2004. She is survived by her daughter, Ada Edwards of Albuquerque; grandsons, Russell Edwards and wife, Janice of Albuquerque and Roy Edwards and wife, Lisa of Norfolk, VA; two great-grandchildren, Evan and Talon Edwards. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Jennings Moree; four brothers; and one sister. Mrs. Moree was born and raised in Missouri and lived down the street from President Harry Truman when they were youth. She resided in Clinton, MO until moving to Albuquerque where she lived by herself until three months ago. Mrs. Moree was a master seamstress. She bred and raised parakeets. She was a member of Rebecah Lodge and was a Past Noble Grand in Warrensburg, MO and Albuquerque, NM. Mrs. Moree was a member of Trinity Methodist Church. She was a devoted mother and loving grandmother and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held at a later date. MORRISH -- Sidney F. Morrish, 79, died unexpectedly on Monday, January 26, 2004. He was born on April 12, 1924 in Oberlin, KS. He was a lifelong member of the Shriners and played for many years with the Shrine Band. Sid was also a 50 years member and past Master of the Mt. Slope Lodge in Oberlin, KS. Sid also was a member First Presbyterian Church, the Elks Lodge, the Oberlin Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, AF & AM and the American Legion Post #7 in Tucson, AZ. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the South Pacific and later attended the University of Kansas before moving to the Albuquerque area in 1960. He worked as a court reporter for Howard Henry and Associates for several years and then had his own court reporting business in Santa Fe, which he retired from in the mid 1980's. Sid was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine. He is survived by his son, Tom and his wife, Ruth of Tyrone, NM; daughters, Mary Beth of St. Charles, MO and Kimberly Wynn and her husband, Dallas of Tucson, AZ; grandchildren, Dawn Morrish of San Antonio, TX, Chip and his wife, Nikki, Joshua and Zachery Morrish, all of Silver City, NM; sister, Gertrude Huckelberry and her husband, Robert of Richland, WA; and favorite cousin, Dorothy Burns and her husband, Larry of Ft. OLMSTEAD -- Frank M. Olmstead was born to Eva and Francis Olmstead on March 3, 1923 in Cimmarron, New Mexico. Frank passed away January 28, 2004 in Walsenburg, Colorado at the Colorado State Veterans Retirement Home after a long struggle with thryoid cancer. He graduated from Maxwell High School in Maxwell, New Mexico in 1941. In 1942, Frank joined the US Army Air Corps where he served in England until 1944 when he was transferred to the infantry for the "Battle of the Bulge." He served in the occupation forces in Germany until his honorable discharge in 1946 from the US Army. Frank attended Highlands University in Las Vegas, NM and graduated in 1952. He received his CPA in 1953 and practiced in Las Vegas, NM. He was elected Mayor of Las Vegas, NM in 1962 and served until 1966 when he moved to Albuquerque, NM with family where he continued his CPA practicde. In 1970, Frank was elected New Mexico State Auditor and served for four years. In 1974, he returned to his CPA practice and was an active public accountant until his retirement. Frank married Audrey Kern in 1950, they had four children. He is survived by his ex-wife, Audrey Kern and children, Dr. Stephen F. Olmstead, Sandra Kaye Olmsted, Jennifer A. Olmstead and Jacqueline Lee Coombes; seven grandchildren and beloved sister, Eva DeLeon. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. At his request cremation with a Memorial Mass, 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Holy Family Catholic Church. Inurnment 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 4, 2004, Santa Fe National Cemetery, Santa Fe, New Mexico.

PACHECO -- Ramon Michael Pacheco, 34, a resident of Albuquerque passed away on January 29, 2004. Ramon is the beloved brother to Lupe Lucero and husband, Richard, Dina Chavez and husband, Nash, Florencio C. Pacheco II and wife, April and John E. Pacheco. Ramon is also survived by his nieces, Darlene, Delilah, Gabriella, Amanda and Andrea; nephews, Carlos and Anthony; several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Ramon was preceded in death by his parents, Florencio C. Pacheco and Juanita A. Pacheco. Ramon was a member of the Catholic Church. PUTMAN -- Carolyn E. Putman, passed away on January 29, 2004. Carolyn was born in Peoria, Illinois on August 25, 1929. She had recently received her membership status in the DAR. Carolyn was an avid bridge player, loved traveling, and adored her grandchildren. She had a zest for life, and a love for laughter. She was a resident of Rio Rancho, NM and long time resident of Peoria, Illinois and was a member of the St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral in Peoria, Ill. Carolyn was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Nuell, her precious daughter, Patricia Jones, and brother, H. Robert Wulff. She is survived by her children, Mark and wife, Terry of Peoria, Rhinehart (Matt) Putman of Rio Rancho, Tim and Alison of Austin, TX; sisters, Harriett Hettrick of Rio Rancho, Margaret Stowell of San Clemete, CA; her adored grandchildren, David, Amy, Travis, Rebekka, Elizabeth, Raymond, Eve, and Julia; and her great-grandchildren, Ariana, Mallory, Maisy and Benjamin; and many others that will deeply miss her. PYA -- Gilyda S. Pya, 83, also known to many as Lyka Drucille Merriman, died Thursday, January 29, 2004. She had been a resident of Albuquerque since 1950. She was proud to have served in the Women's Army Corps in World War II in Paris, France. Her working career spanned 20 years including administrative assistant to the base commander at Kirtland before she retired. She is survived by her sister, Eva M. Perry of Lubbock, Texas; her brother, James P. Merriman of Midland, Texas; her two daughters, Carol L. Skaggs and her husband Kent and Susan Davis, of Albuquerque; four grandchildren, Sandra Long-Mendoza, Stefanie Zbylut, Amy Dapolito and Kyle Davis, also of Albuquerque; five great-grandchildren: Marissa, Meghan, Mikayla, Kaitlyn and Jacob; six nieces and nephews: James W. Perry, Steve Perry, Marilyn Brown, James C. Merriman, Robert Merriman and Cynthia Nussey. She is preceded in death by her parents, Theodore Parr and Ruth Lasater Merriman and her sister, Ruth Croxen. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the American Cancer Society in her name. Cremation has taken place and a private memorial service will be held by the family at a later time.

REHBERG -- Jesse Charles Rehberg, age 81, passed away after a short illness on Friday, January 30, 2004. He was born on September 23, 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio. Jess was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, and a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He retired after 40 years from Sandia Laboratories. He is survived by his son Dan Rehberg and wife Magdalena, daughters Edith Rehberg Shatz and Barbara Salazar and husband James. Two sisters Catherine Langan (Robert deceased), Carol Karasek and husband Dale, brother Earl P. Rehberg and wife Mildred. Grandchildren Amy Rehberg, Kathryn Rehberg, Charles Rehberg, Douglas Shatz and wife Aubrey, Christopher Shatz, Brian Shatz, and Matthew Salazar. Great grandchildren Jacob Shatz and Erika Shatz. He was preceded in death by his wife Bernadette, daughter JoJo, and son Robert. Mrs. Rogers, 75, died Tuesday, January 27, 2004 in Abilene, Texas. Rev. Archie Echols will officiate at the services. Interment will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Twin Oaks Memorial Park in Artesia. Mrs. Rogers was born March 23, 1928 in Artesia; the daughter of Willie Walker Brown and Laura Alice (Yost) Brown. On September 4, 1946 she was married to Jack C. Rogers in Carlsbad. He preceded her in death February 20, 1989. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and by sisters Pat Wilburn and Nancy Shelton. She was a bookkeeper and was active at the Joy Center and Roswell Adult Center. Survivors include, son Jack C. SIMMONS -- Rita M. Simmons passed away peacefully on Monday, January 26, 2004 at the age of 83. As artist, writer, teacher and mother, Rita touched and inspired many lives with her unflagging optimism. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1921, Rita moved to Roswell, New Mexico in the 1940's. Prior to 1950, Rita settled permanently in Albuquerque and became a vital member of the New Mexico arts community. She won countless awards for her work, including the Purchase Award at the 1965 Santa Fe Biennial. She studied Fine Arts at the Walker Arts Center in Minneapolis and at the University of New Mexico. During the 1970's and 1980's Rita opened and managed the Albuquerque Academy of Art and Design and with several local artists established the 10+ Group. Rita was also active in the New Mexico Art League, and most recently The New Mexico Watercolor Society. Rita was passionate and outspoken about the state of the arts in New Mexico. In addition to painting and teaching, Rita authored a regular column in Sunshine Artist magazine and published numerous interviews with New Mexico artists in Southwest Art magazine. She was deeply inspired in her work by the landscapes of the Southwest. Rita is credited with naming the Turqouise Trail (the portion of NM Highway 14 which runs through Madrid, Cerrillos and Golden). Rita is survived by her four children, Jeff of Dayton, Ohio, Gerard and wife, Vicki and Mary of Albuquerque, Joe of Denver, Colorado; grandchildren, Margo Simmons, Ben La Croix, and Katie LaCroix, of Denver, Aric Grauke of Albuquerque; and great-grandson, Ashur La Croix of Denver. Rita was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Ethel Potter, brothers, Robert, Tom, Burke, and Buzz Potter, all of Minnesota, and husband, Joseph E. Simmons of Albuquerque. Rita loved dearly and was dearly loved. In accordance with her wishes, her body was cremated and a memorial service will be held in the spring.
