ABEYTA -- Barbara G. Abeyta, age 87, was born October 21, 1915 in Albuquerque where she was a lifelong resident. Barbara passed away peacefully, October 13, 2003. She was preceded in death by her son Leonardo "Lenny" Abeyta and daughter Evangelina Abeyta. Barbara is survived by her eleven children, Leo Abeyta, Rosella Otero and husband Kenneth, Lillian Romero and husband Moses, Barbara L. Abeyta, Betty Bueno and husband Anastacio, Shirley Abeyta-Herrera and husband Ben, Jane Garcia and husband Michael, Hilda Padilla and husband Juan, Fred Abeyta and wife Petra, Judy Abeyta and husband Rick Dubois, Joseph Abeyta and wife Joann; 25 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; sister-in-law Mary Garcia and numerous other family members and friends who loved and will miss her. BERNARD III -- Nelson T. Bernard III, age 47, a resident of Albuquerque for 45 years passed away on September 21, 2003. He is survived by his parents, Nelson T. Bernard Jr. and Mary Rosalyn; three sisters, Karen Lee of Las Vegas, Nevada, Pamela Johnson of Nageezi, NM, and Louise Sims of Irving, TX; six nieces and nephews; six great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jennifer P. Bernard. Nelson was a graduate of Manzano High School and went on to graduate from the University of New Mexico. He was determined to establish himself throughout his life and over came many obstacles with persistence, great determination, and courage. He went on to become a very successful electrical journeyman. He was a member of the I.B.E.W. local union 611, and was also a member of the Victory Love Church. Bernard was a very kind and gentle man who was always referred to as a gentle giant who loved his family and friends. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2003, 2:00 p.m. at Victory Love Fellowship, 7201 Central Ave. NW Albuquerque, New Mexico with Pastor Jack Connor officiating. CASTILLO -- Beltran J. Castillo left his precious family on earth to join his heavenly Father on October 11, 2003 at the age of 72. He is survived by his loving wife, Lucilla Castillo; three sons, Gerald Griego and wife, Joanne, Danny Castillo, and Michael Castillo; two daughters, Maryann Castillo and husband, John, and Shirley Castillo. He was blessed with 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Also surviving are, three brothers, Sisto Castillo, Joe Castillo and wife, Helen, and Fermin Castillo and wife, Eleanor; two sisters, Tomesita Vance and husband, Paul, and Amantina Lucero and husband, Ray, whom also left us this week, all of Bernalillo. Beltran gave of himself unconditionally, regardless of the size and importance of the need. His aspects of life will continue on in a our hearts forever. "Siempre y por toda la enternidad". Visitations will be Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Alameda Mortuary. A rosary will be recited this evening at 7:45 p.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, in Bernalillo. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday at 11:00 a.m. also at the church. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Sorrows Cemetery. COMSTOCK -- Fred G. Comstock, 82, a resident of Albuquerque since 1949, died Sunday, October 12, 2003. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty of the family home; sons, Mark Comstock and wife, Dana, Gary Comstock, Roger Comstock and wife, Cyndi and Robert Comstock, all of Albuquerque; daughter-in-law, Katherine Comstock of Denver, CO; and grandchildren, Cristin Comstock of Dallas, TX, Joseph Comstock of San Diego, CA, Michael Comstock, Megan Comstock, both of Denver, CO, Jeffrey Comstock of Anacortes, WA, Riley Comstock and Ryan Comstock, both of Albuquerque. He was preceded in death by his son, Curtis Comstock. Fred joined the Masonic Lodge June 26, 1948, then became a member of the Royal Arch Chapter, and progressed to membership of the Scottish Rite Shrine. He served on the State Board of Education for 22 years, he went on to serve as the National Secretary of the State Boards of Education in the late 1960's. He was a member of the Jaycees and a long-time member of the Breakfast Toastmasters Club. Fred served in various positions within the N.M. Society of Certified Public Accounts, serving as president in the 1950's. He was a charter member of The Exchange Club of Albuquerque serving in various positions including president within the chapter over the last 44 years. Fred taught at the University of New Mexico and after teaching, worked at Sandia National Laboratories. Services will be held Thursday, 10:00 a.m., at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 114 Carlisle Blvd. SE, with Rev. Chris Lieberman officiating. Interment will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery. COYLE -- Linda Sue Coyle died on October 9, 2003 just 40 years young. A lifelong resident of Albuquerque, graduate of El Dorado High School and a well known talented artist. She leaves behind her beloved mother, Harriet Jean; loving brothers, Greg and Lance and their families. She is preceded in death by her beloved father, John J.; and sister, Marcy. DUKE -- Joseph Beecher (J.B.) Duke, 82, Building Contractor, passed away Monday, October 13, 2003, after a lengthy illness. As a native of New Mexico, he grew up on a cattle ranch. Mr. Duke served as a flight engineer on C-47's in the South Pacific during WWII on flights from New Guinea to Okinawa, Guadalcanal, Philippines and Tokyo, logging over 1000 flying hours. Prior to his military service, he married Lois A. Hagemeier of Albuquerque. He held a New Mexico Building Contractors License for 50 years. Mr. Duke's numerous construction projects consisted of custom homes, office buildings, 4-plexes, motels, service stations and church building projects in Albuquerque and other New Mexico cites. He was a longtime member and supporter of the Nazarene Church, serving on numerous boards and committees. In May 1987, the Board of Trustees of the Nazarene Indian Bible College conferred upon him the distinction of Honorary Alumnus for his years of dedicated concern and leadership on behalf of the college. Mr. Duke's love for God, his family and the church were his passion. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in the great outdoors. He was preceded in death by one son-in-law, Denny Ray Stokes; one sister, Faye Eicher; and one brother, Emmett Duke. Survivors include his wife, Lois Duke of the family home; one son, Jerald Duke and wife, Nancy, of Mansfield, TX; and two daughters, Charlotte Erhardt of Lubbock, TX and Darla Livingston and husband, Doug, of Phoenix, AZ. He is also survived by five sisters, Jessie Clark of Redmond, WA, Martha Steinkruger Burke of Amarillo, TX, Helen Jacobi of Lake Charles, LA, Bonnie Frost Hutchison of Albuquerque and Connie Lamb of Broomfield, CO; five brothers, Ross Duke of Clovis, Jack Duke of Pecos, TX, Jim Duke of Amarillo, TX, Gene Duke of Brownfield, TX and Darrell Duke of Broadview, NM; 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. HOBBIE -- Marion Helen Hobbie died October 14, 2003. She was born March 21, 1917 in Grand Rapids, MI to Howard and Winnie Gaskill. As a child Marion moved to Berkley, CA. She married Theodore V. Hobbie on December 20, 1940 in Salt Lake City, UT. A longtime resident of Albuquerque, she is survived by her loving husband, Theodore; two daughters, Teddie Brewer and Julia Hobbie-Low; two grandchildren, Steve Brewer and Lisa Lynn Chapman; and two nephews, Ron Taylor and John Taylor. Marion was active in the Daughters of the Nile and in the Ostomy Association and was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church. JURCA -- Rose Jurca, nee Rudick, died October 10, 2003 in Albuquerque, New Mexico at the age of 91. Born May 8, 1912 in Olwein, Iowa, and a longtime resident of Buffalo, New York. She moved to Albuquerque in 1980 to be with her children. She is survived by her children, daughter, Eileen Rose Jurca FitzPatrick and fiance, Michael G. Henry, both of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Michael A. Jurca Jr. and wife, Barbara Ann (nee Drajem) of Las Cruces, New Mexico, and her youngest son, Tony Jurca, of New Mexico; grandchildren, Amy M. (nee Jurca) Welch and husband, Christopher of Palmer Lake, Colorado, Dr. William M. FitzPatrick of Binghamton, New York, and Michael A. Jurca, III and wife, Carolyn of Lacey, Washington; great-grandson, Nicholas Ryan Welch of Palmer Lake; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces, great-nephews, other family, friends and neighbors who will miss her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Philomena Rudick; her husband, Dr. Michael A. KELLY -- Wilma R. Kelly, a longtime resident of Socorro County, NM passed away Saturday, October 11, 2003 at her home in Lemitar, NM. Wilma was born on a ranch in Corona, NM to Lum R. Richards and Theda (Jones) Richards. Wilma continued ranching and farming up until the time of her death. She is survived by her children, Cynthia Van Landingham and husband, Larry of Lemitar, NM, Clint Martin and wife, Reba of Belen, NM and Sandra Herkenhoff and husband, Ben Haines of Las Cruces, NM. She is also survived by Elijio Chavez and wife, Petra and family of Lemitar, NM whom she also considered to be her son. Wilma leaves behind six grandchildren, Shane Van Landingham and wife, Monica, Brandi Van Landingham Jones and husband, Jeff, Lance Van Landingham and wife, Antoinette, Joshua Kaufmann and Freedom, Kyle Martin, Katie Martin Rother and husband, Brett; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. Wilma's entire life was devoted to others, always thinking of everyone's needs but her own. Wilma was the ultimate volunteer. Her service to the community included many years as a founding Hospital Auxilary Gray Lady, officer in the Socorro County Farm Bureau, Sacaton Cowbelles and the organization closest to her heart, the Socorro County Fair and Rodeo. In 1999 Wilma was especially honored to be named Grand Marshal of Socorro County Fair and Rodeo Association's Golden Anniversary. Wilma's many accomplishments included crocheting, quilting, taking thousands of photographs of every aspect of her life and organizing volumes of photo albums for every member of her family and many friends, all the while being a vital, hands on force in the every day operations of the family farm and ranch. Wilma was just as comfortable in the branding pen as she was at accompanying J.B. to accept a National Farming Award in California, dressed to the nine's, or receiving well deserved accolades from New Mexico State University for achievements of excellence in agriculture. Above all, Wilma was the consummate mother, mother-in-law and grandmother devoting her entire life to the welfare of her family. A celebration of her life will be held at Kelly Hall, at the Socorro County Fair Grounds, which was named for and dedicated to Wilma and her late husband, J.B. Kelly. Services will be at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, October 17, 2003. Arrangements have been made with Steadman-Hall Funeral Home in Socorro, NM. MARES -- Deborah Lynn Mares, 49, went to be with Jesus on October 11, 2003. She was born on October 17, 1953, in Santa Fe, New Mexico to Robert and Jeanette Fay Mares of Los Lunas, New Mexico. She was residing in Albuquerque, New Mexico with her extended family and friends of ARCA at the Fairbanks home. Debbie loved animals, especially dogs, and one of her favorite past times was watching the Animal Planet. She is survived by her parents; four brothers, Jim Mares and his wife, Jennifer of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Edward Mares and his wife, Sandra of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; Brian Mares and his wife, Connie of Bernalillo, New Mexico; and Joe Mares and his wife, Jackie of Albuquerque, New Mexico; four sisters, Liz and her husband, Mike Olmstead of Portland Oregon; Linda Ruth Arballo of Santa Fe, New Mexico; Audrey and her husband, Ted Olsen of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Barbara and her husband, Dennis Garcia of Los Lunas, New Mexico. MARTINEZ -- Rita P. Martinez, age 91, died on October 11, 2003. She died peacefully in her sleep. Rita was born in Kelly, NM on October 2, 1912. She lived in Gallup, NM from 1914 through 1945. In 1946, she moved with her husband and her family to Chinle, AZ. She lived in Chinle from 1946 through 1978. She lived the remainder of her life in Albuquerque. Rita was preceded in death by her husband, Felix R. Martinez. When Felix died in 1994, the couple had been married fro 58 years. Also preceding her in death were her older brother, Mike Peralta; and her younger sister, Lena Sanchez. Rita is survived by her six children, Roselee Feller, of Killeen,TX, Stanley and wife, Rose of Chinle, AZ, Robert and wife, Carol of Flagstaff, AZ, Henry and wife, Lorraine of Albuquerque, Raymond and wife, Roberta of Albuquerque and Isabelle and husband, LV Churchman of Albuquerque. Rita is also survived by her sister, Ruth Gonzalez; and by her brother, Louie Peralta both of Gallup, NM; and by 16 grandchildren;and 20 great-grandchildren. QUEZADA -- Lucy G. Quezada, 75, passed away on October 13, 2003. She was born on March 12, 1928 in Zamora, New Mexico. Mrs. Quezada is survived by her sons, Frank Martinez, Tom Martinez, Paul Griego and wife Frances, Chris Griego and Ray Griego and wife Elizabeth; daughters, Donna Sena and Carolyn Griego; brothers, Jose Griego and wife Sally and Gilbert Trujillo and wife, Judy; sisters, Neola Torres and Liza Cadena; 16 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Lucy will be deeply missed by her loving family. REYNOLDS -- Irene Barber Reynolds, died Monday, October 6, 2003, after an illness of several months. She was born June 21, 1933 in Lansing, Michigan. Her parents were Charles H. Barber and Una Kingsbury Barber. When Irene was 13 the family moved from Lansing to Nanking, China, where her father was a U.S. Army officer attached to the U.S. Embassy. Her mother taught in the American School in Nanking. After the Communist takeover of China, the family moved to Albuquerque, where Irene graduated from Albuquerque High. She discovered her great love, the earth, at UNM where she majored in geology and mathematics. She was an excellent student, being named to the Phi Kappa Phi, Kappa Mu Epsilon and Sigma Gamma Epsilon honorary scholastic fraternities. She went on to earn her master's degree in geology at Columbia University. She worked as a geologist for several companies and became a consulting geologist in Albuquerque in 1965. She was a member of several geologic societies and was an officer of the Albuquerque Geological Society and the New Mexico Section of the American Institute of Professional Geologists. She is survived by her husband, Charles B. Reynolds; daughter, Mary Davidson and husband, Charles; granddaughters, Emily and Laurel Davidson, all of Tijeras; sons, Thomas Reynolds of Las Vegas, NV and Douglas Bolich of Santa Fe; and daughter-in-law, Peggy Sanchez; and grandsons, Jordan and Devin Bolich of Santa Fe. Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held Friday, 3:30 p.m., at the Chester T. French Memorial Mausoleum Chapel, at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul NE. SANCHEZ -- Esquipula "Pula" R. Sanchez 74, a lifelong resident of Valencia, New Mexico, peacefully joined Our Lord and Savior on Monday, October 13, 2003. Pula was born on June 4, 1929 to his parents, Tomas and Lupita A. Sanchez. Pula retired from the Los Lunas Public Schools, a job he loved very much. He was a very dedicated and loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and son. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Tomas and Lupita A. Sanchez; his brothers, Francisco and Jesus Sanchez; and his sister, Mercy Boys. He is survived by the mother of his five children, Mary B. Pula was such a people person that many loving and dear friends also survive him. He will be greatly missed by all. His urn bearers will be his son, Anthony and grandson Antonio. He will be laid to rest beside his mother, Lupita, in the Valencia Catholic Cemetery. SANCHEZ -- Maria "Rita" Sanchez, 67, a life long resident of Albuquerque, died on Monday, October 13, 2003. She is survived by her brothers, Clarence Sanchez of Cuba, NM and Alex "Danny" Sanchez of Corrales, NM and sister, Victoria Souza of Eugene, OR. Rita was preceded in death by her parents Elias Sanchez in 1976 and Anita Sanchez in 1973. She worked at Goodwill Industries and K-Mart. Rita was very active with Alameda Senior Center and Cornucopia Adult Day Center, and was loved by all. Services will be held Thursday, 7:00 p.m. at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel. SEGURA -- Robert "Bobby" Segura was called Home October 12, 2003. Born in Rowe, New Mexico, he resided in Albuquerque for 41 years. Bobby was preceded in death by his parents, Joaquin and Peliaga; his son, Stevie; brothers, Melo, Luis, and Frank; sisters, Perfilia, Cipy, and Vangie. He is survived by his wife, Fay; two daughters, Christina and Yvette; one brother, Pat; five sisters, Helen, Jane, Cordelia, Mary Ann, and Yolanda; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He will be missed by all. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 412 Stover Ave. SW., on Thursday, October 16, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. The burial will follow at Mt. SODOS -- AnJa Sodos, 53, resident of Albuquerque since 1980 died Wednesday, September 17, 2003 in Haleiwa, Hawaii after a courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by husband, Ron; and daughters, Yukiko and Miki. AnJa was born in Tokyo, Japan and traveled to America alone at 19. She met Ron in Hawaii and October 7, 2003 would have been their 31st anniversary. She will be deeply missed by the family and a multitude of friends, neighbors and co-workers. AnJa was a registered nurse at the University Hospital and was dedicated to patient care. Everyone who met her knew her as the gentle soul that she was. SWANSON -- Robert Lowell (Bob) Swanson, 77, a longtime resident of Albuquerque and beloved husband, father, brother and friend, died at his home on October 13, 2003 after a long and valiant battle with cancer. Bob was born September 19, 1926 in Canova, SD, the third child of Richard O. and Kathryn Swanson. Following high school in Lake Andes, SD, he joined the United States Army and after serving in the Asiatic-Pacific, was honorably discharged in August 1946. Following his discharge, he moved to New Mexico. In 1959, he met and married Norma Herbst. He was a graduate of University of Albuquerque and owner of Swanson and Associates, a real estate appraisal and consulting firm. He was designated Senior Real Property Appraiser for the Society of Real Estate Appraisers and later served as the president of the local chapter of the SRA. He was also awarded Member Appraisal Institute designation by the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers. In 1965 he was appointed by Governor Jack Campbell to serve on the New Mexico State Hospital Board. He was a member of the B.P.O. Elks #461 and the VFW Post 401, and an active member of the Los Altos Golf Association. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Ardis and his brother Wesley. He is survived by his wife, Norma; daughter, Kathi; brothers, Richard and Dean; and sister, Glenda. He is also survived by three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date, but no other services are planned in accordance with Bob's final wishes. TAFOYA -- Alfonso P. Tafoya, 69, of Las Vegas, Nevada, died October 11, 2003. He was a retiree of the Albuquerque Public School District and a decorated veteran of the Korean War and United States Air Force. He is survived by his children Daniel Tafoya and wife Bonnie of Las Vegas, NV, Yvette Tafoya-Leyba and husband Rudy of Albuquerque, Alfonso Tafoya Jr., of Albuquerque and Rosella Tafoya-Cedillo and husband Cesar of Denver, CO, 5 grandchildren, 3 brothers and 3 sisters. TORRES -- Milton Gilberto Torres, 77, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, passed away at a local nursing home on October 13, 2003. Milton was a member of Queen of Heaven Church. He is preceded in death by his wife, Aurlelia Sanchez Torres who passed away April 24, 1993, and one sister Lenora Chavez. Survivors include one son, Raymond Torres and wife Nelda; one daughter, Maria Christina Salgado and husband Lorenzo; four grandchildren, Raymond Jr., Michael, and Nicole of California, and Gabriel of Albuquerque; three sisters, Lucy Montoya of Gallup, New Mexico, Henrietta Barela and husband Greg, Rita Griego and husband Edward all of California; two brother-in-laws, Ernest Chavez of California, Pablo Sanchez of New Mexico; three sister-in-laws, Adela Guitierrez, Irene Sanchez, and Nestorita Lujan, all of New Mexico.
