TAYLOR -- Velda C. Taylor died suddenly in Clovis, NM on May 7, 2009 at the age of 90. Velda was born in New Amsterdam, Indiana on February 6, 1919. She lived many places where she made countless friends throughout her life including, Washington DC, Biloxi, Mississippi, Ft. Walton Beach, Florida, Las Vegas, NV, Marysville, CA and Albuquerque, NM. During World War II, Velda worked as a ship welder. She also worked as a beautician in her early life and spent her later life as an accomplished collector. Velda was a loving mother, grandmother, wife and friend who always put others first. She had a lovingly warped sense of humor that anyone who knew her will remember. Velda was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Charles Taylor; and is survived by her beloved son, Michael T. Hamilton (her bouncing baby boy), wife Denise; granddaughter, Katrina Wagner; great-grandson Jason T. Wagner, Adam Wagner, grandson Thomas Taylor and family Tom and Sandy Taylor. She is also survived by her incredible neighbors and friends whose love and support enabled her to remain in her beloved home. CHAVEZ -- Eloy D. Chavez, 87, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, passed away on Saturday, May 2, 2009. Eloy was a descendent of the original founding families of Albuquerque. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Rose; his two sons, Dr. Eloy A. Chavez, Jr. and wife, Betsy, of Shawnee, Oklahoma, and Robert W. Chavez of Albuquerque; five grandchildren, Veronica Kirksey of Chickasha, Oklahoma, Michael Chavez, Christina Chavez, Adam Chavez and Jarrod Chavez, all of Shawnee, Oklahoma; one sister, Margaret Montoya and her husband, Anselmo of Albuquerque; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, David S. and Piedad Chavez; a daughter, Veronica Ann Chavez; six brothers, Alfred Chavez, Tom Chavez, David Chavez, Reginald Chavez, Charles Chavez, and Solomon Mirabal; four sisters; Carmen Chavez, Connie Chavez, Annie Pershing, and Jemma Romero. Eloy was a graduate of Albuquerque High School class of 1939. He proudly served his country in the First Cavalry Division of the United States Army during WWII, under General Douglas MacArthur. He served at the rank of Staff Sergeant. Eloy graduated from the University of New Mexico with his Bachelors Degree and Masters Degree. He was a retired teacher and counselor for Albuquerque Public Schools after serving for 31 years. Eloy worked for the City of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County Parks and Recreation Departments as a recreation specialist. He was a prominent and distinguished high school sports official with the New Mexico Activities Association for over 50 years. He was inducted into the Albuquerque Baseball and Softball Hall of Fame. He was the Commissioner of Officials for the Central Region as well as an assignor for many high school athletic events. Eloy had many friends across the State of New Mexico who were officials and coaches. He was loved and admired by all. Rosary will be recited on Tuesday, May 5, 2009, 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 6, 2009, 9:00 a.m., at San Felipe de Neri Catholic Church, 2005 Plaza NW, Old Town. Entombment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. MATTHEWS -- Richard (Rick) Matthews, age 57, passed away on Monday, April 27, 2009, surrounded by his loving family. After a bravely fought battle with cancer, he is now at peace with the Lord and is suffering no more. He was preceded in death by his Parents, Robert & Dorothy Matthews. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Melody, his daughter Karen, (son-in-law, John), daughter Kristi (son-in-law, Rich), his brothers Bob and Tom, and his sister Kathy. His 4 grandchildren were the joy of his life: Michelle, Jacob, Alyssa, and Dominic. Rick proudly earned his Eagle Scout award and served in the U.S. Navy. He graduated from UNM, after which he worked in the aerospace industry with 27 years at Honeywell and the past 6 years at Boeing SVS. Rick had an abundance of different talents, a multitude of friends, a deep appreciation for life, and endless love for his family. Those of us who knew and loved him will always remember his positive attitude, his zest for life, and his love for the Lord. SANCHEZ -- Jose Torres Sanchez "Che", was born September 23, 1919 in Ft. Defiance, Arizona. He passed away Friday, May 1, 2009 at his home, surrounded by his loving family at the age of 89. Jose was US Army Veteran who Honorably served his country during WWII. He was a longtime member of the V.F.W and the American Legion. Jose was preceded in death by his wife, Virgilia Sanchez; his parents, Jose and Elena Sanchez and by his daughter, Annie Ruth. Jose is survived by his sons and daughters: Kelly Sanchez and wife Mary Lou, Helen Sanchez, Jackie Sanchez and Tom, Richard Sanchez and wife Pauline, Clemente Sanchez and wife Georgia, Louie Sanchez, Florinda Armijo and husband Esequiel, Clorinda Brito and Ralph, Marilyn Medina and husband Ruben, Becky Hopinkah, Carolyn Sanchez and Jose's longtime companion, Petra Montano; 37 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren; many other family members and friends who loved and will miss him. Services and visitation will be held at Our Lady of Light Catholic Church in Cubero, New Mexico. A Visitation will begin on Monday, May 4, 2009 at 4:30 p.m. with a Rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 2:30 with US Army Honors. RUIZ -- Tom Ruiz, wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend was born April 21, 1941 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He went to join his Lord Jesus Christ on Tuesday, April 28, 2009. Tom lived strong, happy and grateful for everything and everyone in his life. He was a United States Air Force Veteran who served his country honorably. Tom lived in Los Alamos for 53 years and retired from the Laboratory. He moved to Albuquerque in 1999. Tom was an avid golfer and a Lobo and Dallas Cowboy fan. He coached several softball and baseball teams for many years and touched many lives. Tom will be remembered as a faithful friend to everyone who was fortunate enough to be a part of his life. His love of God grew every day and we know his home is now with Jesus. As well, Tom was a devout Catholic and was as Assigned Adorer in the Blessed Sacrament. He was preceded in death by his mother, Pilar and his father, Levi Ruiz; brothers, Ray and Joe Ruiz and his brother-in-law, Tony Rodriguez. Tom is survived by his loving family, his wife, Mary Lou Ruiz; his daughter, Shirley Lockyer and husband Tom; son, Richard Ruiz; daughter, Sheri Ruiz and Denise Hall; son, Ron Ruiz; son, Richard Ross and wife Diana and son, Alan Ross and wife Julie; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Phylis Rodriguez, Rita Peaslee and husband Jim, Juanita Miguel and Dolores Fulcher; sisters-in-law, Harriett Ruiz, Kay Nation, Cheryl Drake and husband Dan; his dog, Rosie Posie; numerous other family members and friends who loved and will miss him. PETERSON -- John Ridgeway Peterson passed away peacefully on April 26, 2009 at SGHS Brunswick Campus, Georgia. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, 11:00 a.m., May 2, 2009 at Peterson Cemetery in Ailey, Georgia. Born in Ailey, GA on December 12, 1921 to the late William James and Mae Murphy Peterson he attended Brewton Parker High School and Emory University. Upon graduating from Emory University with a degree in Geology in June 1942, he entered the Army Air Corps for officer training. He received his commission as a Second Lieutenant at Yale University in 1943 and was assigned as a Group Aerial Photographic Officer to the 391st B26 Bomber Group based north of London, England. Upon the end of WWII, he returned home for a short time and then during the Korean Conflict was based at Sandia Air Force Base in Albuquerque, NM for atomic weapons training. It was there he met his future wife, Laura MacArthur, of an old established New Mexico family, and they married on July 7, 1950. Mr. Peterson worked in New Mexico as a "Land Man" for Standard Oil Company. In 1963 the family moved to the Washington, DC area where he worked for the Central Intelligence Agency in the Domestic Contact Service. He retired in 1981 and lived out his retirement years in Albuquerque, NM and then St. Simons Island, GA. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Laura MacArthur Peterson of St. Simons Island GA; two children Laura P. O'Meara and husband George of Charlottesville, VA and John R. Peterson II and wife Yvonne of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Shannon Kibler, Morgan O'Meara, Brandon Peterson, Michelle Peterson; and great-granddaughter, Julianna Kibler; brothers William J. Peterson Jr. of Soperton, GA, Tom Peterson of Ailey, GA and a sister, Jeanne Robinson of Columbus, GA. Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

SCOTT -- Leonard Theodore. On Saturday, April 25, 2009, Leonard Theodore Scott, "Scotty" passed away. Scotty was baptized on August 13, 1958. Scotty had a lengthy and complicated medical history and died of heart and lung complications. Scotty was always surrounded by family and friends and passed away peacefully at his home in his wife's arms. Scotty was loved by everyone who knew him. He was always friendly, happy and loved to tell jokes. He was born on October 17, 1925 in Wichita Falls, Texas, to William Marcus and Effie Mae Scott. In 1943, at the age of 17, he volunteered and joined the U.S. Navy. He was assigned to a baby aircraft carrier the USS Marcus Island CVE77, where he proudly served in the South Pacific until March 1946. He held near and dear to his heart his service and his love for the CVE77 and its crew. In 1947, Scotty returned to Altus, Oklahoma where he met and married the light of his life, Maxine Little, "Mickey." Scotty and Mickey wed on September 25, 1947 and spent the next 61 years together in marital bliss. Scotty always said the best thing he ever did was to marry Mickey. He loved her with his whole heart. They had two children, Lynda and Jerry. Among Scotty's many accomplishments, he graduated from the Spartan School of Aeronautics, worked for Douglas Aircraft Company, and worked at Los Alamos Scientific Labs. He was a long time member and treasurer for the American Vacuum Society, New Mexico Chapter. In 1978, with Mickey by his side, he established Scotty's Sales, a Mobile Home and RV's sales company North of Santa Fe. Scotty also served as the president of the Manufacturing Housing Association of New Mexico. In 1991, they retired and moved to Albuquerque. Scotty was a member of the Netherwood Park Church of Christ in Albuquerque. Scotty is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Mickey; his daughter Lynda (Tom) Chrisman of Santa Fe, his son Jerry (Teresa) Scott, of Albuquerque. He is also survived by his grandchildren, April (Chris) Augster, Lynn Preuit, Brad (Marla) Chrisman, Wendy (Ric) Orona and JoAnna (Matt) Kinsley. His great-grandchildren include: Tyler and Summer Augster, Price Preuit, Seth, Lauren, Rebekah, Tessa and Adam Chrisman, Lucus and Maurisa Orona, Baylee and Shelby Thayer. Scotty is also survived by his sister Nora Barris, and brother, Bill (Ann) Scott; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Effie Scott, brother, Larry Scott, sisters, Morine Lonis and Berniece Scott, and his granddaughter, Marlana Scott. Scotty requested Graveside Services only. His Service will be held Thursday April 30, 2009 from 1:00 until 1:30 in the Santa Fe National Cemetery where he will receive full Military Honors. A reception will be held immediately following the Services at Santa Fe Church of Christ at 1205 Galisteo Street, on the corner of Galisteo and Cordova. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, that donations be made in Scotty's name to Albuquerque Christian Children's home or the charity of your choice. Scotty was loved very much and will be sorely missed.
