LERNER -- Samuel, 92, a resident of Albuquerque since 1963, died Thursday, April, 30, 2009. He is survived by his son Frank Milton Lerner and wife, Kathleen of Albuquerque, NM; grandchildren, Michael Lerner, of Las Cruces, NM and Sarah Lerner, of Las Cruces, NM. Mr. Lerner was preceded in death by his wife, Hilda Jane Lerner and his daughter Leslie Jane Chaney. Samuel's mother and twin brother died during child birth on January 19, 1917. He lived in the Hebrew Orphan Asylum and foster homes until he was 16. As a teenager, he hopped a freight train to Cleveland to see the air races. He lived at the YMCA and opened a Texaco gas station where he sold tires and oil on consignment. Later he moved to Florida because a friend found him a position as a waiter in a nice place and he made good tips. When world war two was heating up, he avoided the draft by walking up to an officer at an airfield and asked how he could get into his outfit. The man pointed to a building and said to tell them that he sent you there. By doing this, he avoided boot camp and went right into flying B-18s looking for submarines off of Florida waters. On an early mission the pilot asked the radio man where they were and Sam said to the radio operator; "Tell him which side of the beam we are on." When they landed the pilot said; "Sam, you are my new radio operator." Sam knew radios and code from the Boy Scouts and that was enough to get him into the signal corps and training for B-17s in the eighth air force. When the eighth air force got their orders for Europe everyone went except Sam. His orders sent him to Oklahoma to train on a mysterious new airplane called a B-29. His radio skills helped setup air to ground communications and preparation for the invasion of Japan. One day he was told that they were just waiting for an island to land on. Shortly afterward, he found himself on the island of Saipan and flew on the aircrafts A square 2 and A square 4 on missions over Japan. Samuel flew on an airplane named Dauntless Dotty as a replacement crew member. The original crew was the very first to bomb Japan with a B-29. On several days he commented that there were some lazy bums sitting in lawn chairs and smoking cigars along the Tinian runway. Later he found out that was the crew of the Enola Gay waiting for orders. On one mission he had to climb down into the belly of the airplane and kick some bombs off the rack that had gotten stuck. Samuel was one of the last to leave Saipan and helped decommission the base. While most left the service, Sam stayed in and went to Officer Candidate School. Upon graduation, he spent all his money on a New York tailored uniform and showed up at his aunt's house during Passover. He said hello to everyone but really didn't know anyone else there so he drank the wine that was placed in the window for the angels and then left. Sam went on to be an electronics countermeasures officer on B-36's and B-52's. He flew in "Chrome-dome" missions over the Soviet Union during the cold war where they were looking for weaknesses in the soviet radar systems. They were often chased by fighters but found their way to American air space, sometimes just in time. One time while flying over Texas at 40,000 feet, the entire wing of their B-36 caught on fire. Calmly, the pilot said that he was going to dive the airplane and if the dive didn't work that everyone was to jump out. At 16,000 feet the fire went out. General Curtis Lemay created a spot promotion program that rewarded his best people. Samuel spent about half of his career on spot promotions. As such, he was part of a select crew known for excellence. An example happened on a competition where crews would fly over the North Pole and fly into Puget Sound and report what they were instructed. Of all the crews that participated, only Samuel's crew reported a seven mile error (the worst of the competition). They were humiliated. So much so, Lemay was wondering if the spot program and select crews were working. To determine what happened they all got to fly again and to repeat their observations. Again, only Samuel's crew reported a seven mile error. This time the consequences looked dire for his career. On Samuel's defense he said that he stayed up late and assured that all his equipment was working properly and he even backed his observations by measurement used by celestial navigators. He stayed up late at night learning how to use a sextant and a stop watch. Two weeks later, there was a special meeting where all the crew members and top brass attended. Samuel thought he was going to be re-assigned. The base commander started the meeting by saying that they had a special guest from the National Bureau of Standards and this fellow announced that they indeed found a seven mile error in their maps. So only one crew chose to trust their equipment and that crew got spot promotions and they remained a select crew. This same crew, (being a select crew) was chosen with another crew to carry two 32,000 lb. nuclear bombs with Moscow as their primary target during the Cuban Missle Crisis in October 1962. Samuel retired in 1963 from the Air Force. At one time he worked for General Dynamics installing cryogenics equipment on the F-111. In 1968, his daughter Leslie Jane experienced kidney failure. He rushed to her aid and found a way to get her on Dialysis. In the 60's there were far more people needing dialysis than there were machines that could perform the task but he did it. Leslie needed a kidney transplant. They just didn't know how to do it yet. Leslie shared a hospital room with seven other girls that had the same problem. One by one, the girls got transplants by a world class team of doctors in New York City's Mount Sinai Hospital. One by one, the girls perished from organ rejection. Samuel finagled meetings with these doctors and got them to put Leslie in the line-up. Samuel donated his kidney to Leslie. It was a fabulous tissue match. The team found a new drug called gantracin and tried it on Leslie. After three weeks, her kidney started to reject itself. After prayers, the kidney miraculously started working. Samuel had given Leslie 35 additional years of life. Leslie was one of the earliest truly successful kidney transplant recipients and certainly, one of the longest lived. There are a hundred stories like this to tell about Samuel's enchanted life and you just got a taste. Spulevi Dureki. Interment will take place on Monday, May, 4th, 2009 at 9:30am at the Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Memorial service will take place on Monday, May 4th, 2009 at 4pm at French Mortuary at 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE in Albuquerque, NM. Born in Flint, Michigan in 1932, Lynne grew up in Illinois but fell in love at first sight with the desert and the culture of New Mexico in the 1950's. She was thrilled to move here in 1969 for the rest of her life. Lynne liked to say she had three careers. For the first five years, she worked as a medical technologist. The next twelve years were devoted to raising her two sons and caring for her family. The third time around, she "retooled" and taught English to high school students at Eldorado HS and La Cueva HS for the next twenty one years. She received a BA degree from Stanford University and a MA degree from the University of New Mexico. After she retired, Lynne stayed active as a volunteer in the community, delivering food for Meals on Wheels, guiding clients at the Storehouse, and working in the gift shop at the Museum of Albuquerque. Her favorite job was providing information at the visitor's center in Old Town for the Albuquerque Convention and Visitor's Bureau. There she would chat with travelers from around the world and share her love for this unique community. Lynne is survived by one son, Mark, and wife, Caroline and grandson, Zachariah, of, 315 South Eighth St., Livingston, MT 59047. Other family members are her sister, Gail Cannis, of Portola Valley, California, and her former husband and good friend, Robert Rehder of Albuquerque. Her son, David, preceded her in death. At her request, the family held a private celebration, and there will be no other services. If you would like to leave a memorial, please consider one of her favorites: The New Mexico Symphony, The Albuquerque Museum or The BioPark.
