Obituary for PETERSON

John Ridgeway Peterson passed away peacefully on April 26, 2009 at SGHS Brunswick Campus, Georgia. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, 11:00 a.m., May 2, 2009 at Peterson Cemetery in Ailey, Georgia. Born in Ailey, GA on December 12, 1921 to the late William James and Mae Murphy Peterson he attended Brewton Parker High School and Emory University. Upon graduating from Emory University with a degree in Geology in June 1942, he entered the Army Air Corps for officer training. He received his commission as a Second Lieutenant at Yale University in 1943 and was assigned as a Group Aerial Photographic Officer to the 391st B26 Bomber Group based north of London, England. Upon the end of WWII, he returned home for a short time and then during the Korean Conflict was based at Sandia Air Force Base in Albuquerque, NM for atomic weapons training. It was there he met his future wife, Laura MacArthur, of an old established New Mexico family, and they married on July 7, 1950. Mr. Peterson worked in New Mexico as a "Land Man" for Standard Oil Company. In 1963 the family moved to the Washington, DC area where he worked for the Central Intelligence Agency in the Domestic Contact Service. He retired in 1981 and lived out his retirement years in Albuquerque, NM and then St. Simons Island, GA. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Laura MacArthur Peterson of St. Simons Island GA; two children Laura P. O'Meara and husband George of Charlottesville, VA and John R. Peterson II and wife Yvonne of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Shannon Kibler, Morgan O'Meara, Brandon Peterson, Michelle Peterson; and great-granddaughter, Julianna Kibler; brothers William J. Peterson Jr. of Soperton, GA, Tom Peterson of Ailey, GA and a sister, Jeanne Robinson of Columbus, GA. Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
