PATE, MARY JOYCE COX died of complications after 13 years of Alzheimer's disease at Wooldridge Nursing Home in Corpus Christi, TX on December 7, 2012. She was born on May 19, 1922 to Wylie B Cox and Donnie Marriott Cox, at their home near Ponder, TX. She started to school when she was five because she could read better than her brother could after first grade, and she really wanted to go to school. She and her two brothers rode to school on their Shetland ponies because there were no school buses there at that time. From the time she was six, one of her morning chores was to make the biscuits for breakfast, while her dad and the boys saw to the stock and other outside chores. Her family moved to East Valley View Community, east of Portales, NM, and she received her high school diploma at Portales. That fall of 1939, she got a ride with one of her uncles to Denton, TX, when he was taking a truckload of fruit to sell, and she enrolled at North Texas Teachers College. She stayed with her widowed grandmother, who owned and cooked for a boarding house, because the college didn't have dorms at that time, and Mary served and bussed tables, washed dishes, and helped clean up for her room and board. She also worked at a variety store and babysat for a small amount of spending money. Her future husband, Virgil Pate, had long been a friend of her brothers, and she dated him a few times when she was going with the bunch of kids from Arch and East Valley View. They later started writing to each other, and after she finished her third year in college, they decided to elope to Gallup, NM, where he and many other underemployed men were finding good-paying jobs at Ft. Wingate. Their first home was a tent, and there were few amenities and lots of teasing from their relatives and friends. They moved back to Arch to farm a small acreage in partnership with Virgil's sister and her husband, but their crops didn't support two families very well, so they tried a small farm at Ft. Sumner, NM. Virgil was drafted into the Army shortly after, so Mary went back to Denton to see if she could finish her degree in Home Economics while the men were away at war. She stayed with her grandmother again, only now she had a toddler daughter, so the ladies babysat, too. As many wives did after WW II, she taught at Portales Junior High and sewed professionally to help him get his degree in Range Management and Animal Husbandry at Eastern New Mexico College and at New Mexico A&M. Some of his first jobs were at Arsenic Tubs on the San Carlos Indian Reservation; at Pima, AZ; at Capitan, NM; at Portales, NM; at Deming, NM; at Las Cruces, NM, and at Socorro, NM. She said she had moved more times than Barbara Bush: more than 36 moves in their married life. They were married more than 55 years before he died in 1996. After her children were all in school, she worked briefly at the Socorro El Defensor Chieftain newspaper, did volunteer work at the Socorro Presbyterian church, some substitute teaching, and then, in the early 1960s, she was offered the job of head dietitian at NMIMT, at which she excelled and really enjoyed. Her husband was transferred from his job as district manager of the BLM office to a new post in Canon City in 1968, and he decided to retire a few years later, so they moved back to New Mexico: first, to Albuquerque; then for about 10 years in Portales; and finally, in Jemez Springs. Mary Joyce was a loyal friend, a gentle teacher and advisor to her children and grandchildren, a loving relative to both her and her husband's families, a very capable and understanding partner to her husband, a generous hostess, and a woman who lived her faith. She longed for more educational and job opportunities for women, and for women to be more represented in our government. She loved music: from church hymns to 1970s pop, from classic western to classical orchestral works, to Lawrence Welk, and even to some of her children's 1950s and 1960s music. In her 70s, she was talked into whistling old hymns for her church's offertory music, in which she added many trills and bird calls to the songs. She was an excellent seamstress and tailor, from children's clothing and western-style shirts for the males in the family to fiesta dresses, suits, and elegant dresses for the women, from draperies and home decorating to bridal ensembles and evening dresses. She had a lifelong love for flowers and horticulture, caring for her own houseplants and landscaping, being a flower show judge at the county fairs and garden club events, and providing many hundreds of arrangements for church altars. Her cookbook and recipe collection were truly exceptional, and she was always interested in trying new cuisines, as well as new seasonings and produce, freezing, canning, pickling, making jerky and satisfying the family's sweet tooth. She was initiated into the Order of the Eastern Star in Socorro and served as Worthy Matron of that organization in Portales. She was a longtime member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy in the Portales chapter, and was an active member of the Portales Garden Club. She was an ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church and also served as Clerk of Session in Portales. She is survived by her three children: Sherry Crane (husband Horris) of Albuquerque; Charley Pate (wife Susan) of Jemez Springs; and Dee Pate (wife Ellen) of Larkspur, CO; her sister Eula Ross of Corpus Christi; her brother Jim Cox of Jacksonville, FL. Her grandchildren are Bonnie Murray of Albuquerque; Carol O'Neal of Marian, OH; Jarod Pate of Englewood, CO; Derek Pate of Omaha, NE; and Jillian Pate of Denver and their families. Also surviving are her special friend of over 75 years, Leviatha Jones of Tatum; her brothers-in-law, M.O. Pate of Camp Verde, AZ and Verrell Pate of Lubbock; her sisters-in-law, Pauline Cox of Lubbock, Martha Cox of Jacksonville, Glenna Dawn Reeves of Midland, TX, and Marilyn Pate of Lubbock. She was preceded in death by her mother, her father, her two brothers, and her husband. Cremation was handled by Guardian Funeral Home in Corpus Christi. Remains will be interred in the Portales cemetery in mid January. To honor her life, if you know of a woman who is working to finish her education, and you can see a way to help her, please do it.

RASMUSSEN, LOUISE C. A very sweet, extremely gentile Southern Lady joined parents, numerous siblings, a daughter-in-law and her husband in Heaven on the seventh of December. Louise Cribbs Rasmussen was born on November 20, 1920 near Tutwiler, Mississippi, on the family plantation in the Mississippi Delta, where family had lived since before the Civil War. She was the epitome of Southern kindness, character, beauty, and honor. The fifth of seven children to be born to Lena and Frederick Cribbs, her mother and the doctor vehemently disagreed as to whether she was born on the 20th or the 22nd. Consequently, the family often celebrated both dates; but of course, as Louise would drawl, she certainly "didn't age by two years but only one". Raised in Tutwiler, Louise enjoyed an idyllic childhood among numerous siblings, cousins, and friends. She graduated from the then-called Mississippi State College for Women and received a degree in Home Economics, specializing in clothing and textiles. Well into her eighties, Louise would create and sew outfits that would make professional seamstresses envious. Upon graduating from college and at the onset of WWII, Louise moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where she worked in a science laboratory. There she met Kenneth Rasmussen, a young Air Force instructor pilot. After the war, they were married and were immediately sent to war-torn Yokohoma, Japan. Christopher, their son, was born there, and soon after returning to the United States, their daughter Tege was born in Virginia. From Virginia, the family of four moved to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, which was soon followed by their great northern adventure of three years, Newfoundland. The year l958 saw them return stateside; they moved to Walker AFB in Roswell, NM, and their love for that state began. Upon retiring from the Air Force, Ken moved his family to Portales, then Clovis, where he was on staff at Eastern New Mexico University. Upon his second retirement, Ken yearned for more education, and the two of them returned to Louise's roots in Mississippi, where Ken received a long-awaited PhD. Soon after, they began another adventure: a two-year stint with the Peace Corps in Guatemala. In their mid-sixties, Ken and Louise returned to New Mexico, moved to Albuquerque, and resumed their love for the Land of Enchantment. Louise was a member of the PEO Sisterhood, and was an avid, if not downright dangerous, bridge player. She was a voracious reader, and she enjoyed playing golf, swimming and walking the neighborhoods. She and Ken were stalwart members of the Cathedral of St. John, where she was very involved in the Altar Guild. Soon after Ken's death in August of 2008, Louise moved to La Vida Llena Retirement Community, where she met many new people and re-connected with twenty-five year old friendships. The family is very thankful to the loving staff of La Vida Llena for making Louise's last four years so pleasurable and comfortable. Louise was extremely content at LVL. Louise is survived by son, Christopher Kenneth, of Albuquerque; and daughter, Tege Montmorency (John) of Napa, California. She is also survived by five granddaughters, Krisha Montmorency (Gabe Sakakeeny) and Jess Montmorency, both of the San Francisco Bay Area, Elena Lenz (Michael), Anna Rasmussen and Tessa Rasmussen, all of Albuquerque. She is also survived by a grandson, Benjamin James Rasmussen, a Marine stationed in Hawaii; two great-grandchildren, Jakob and Gabriella Lenz of Albuquerque, also survive her. In addition to her California and New Mexico families, Louise is survived by her last sibling, Lena Belle Cribbs of Jackson, Mississippi, and by many nieces and nephews. Louise never felt sorry for herself, and to the day she died was more concerned that people were worried about her than she felt was necessary. Chris and Tege like to think that Louise is enjoying a nice, fruity glass of California Chardonnay with Ken, while she gabs with all her beloved brothers and sisters, happily retelling stories of her happy childhood. A Memorial service will be held for Louise at La Vida Llena Retirement Community, Saturday, December 29, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. In-lieu-of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Employee Association Fund at La Vida Llena Retirement Community, the Foundation at St. John's Episcopal Cathedral, Albuquerque or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of New Mexico. SAISER, CHRISTIAN CHARLES died 4 Dec 2012, at the age of 87, of end stage COPD. He had been a resident of Albuquerque, New Mexico, since 2004, and Belen NM since 1994. He is survived by his son, Richard W. Saiser and his life partner William P. Reust, of Albuquerque. He was predeceased by his wife, Annie Elnora Saiser in 2011. Christian Charles Saiser was born 12 July 1925, in Collins, Missouri, the youngest of seven children born to Charles Sylvester Saiser of O'Neil, Nebraska, and Elizabeth Bridget (Quinn) Saiser of Deloit, Nebraska. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Ovid, Colorado, where Chris grew up. As of April 1943, he had enough hours to graduate from Ovid High School, so he got his mother to sign for him to enlist in the Navy at the age of 17. His father had wanted him to wait, but was proud to stand in for him at the graduation ceremony in June. On March 14, 1946, AO3C Christian Charles Saiser received an honorable discharge and $100 from the US Navy. Chris met the love of his life, Annie E. Nelson, in Cheyenne, WY while working his way through college. The GI Bill and AFROTC enabled him to graduate in 1951 from the University of Denver with a BA, entering active duty immediately in the US Air Force as a second lieutenant. He served in Korea with the 4th Fighter Interceptor Wing at Kempo, and was a first lieutenant when discharged in 1953. He returned to Denver, Colorado, and in 1954 began a 30-year career with the Major Appliance & TV Sales Division of the General Electric Company in Denver. Retirement in 1984 at age 59 was no problem for Chris; he enjoyed it immensely. He and Annie became RV explorers and spent many happy winters camped on a beach in Baja California, until they leased a house in San Carlos, Sonora, in 1990, where he indulged his passion for fishing, until age and health considerations obliged him to move back to his permanent home in Belen, New Mexico in 2001. He suffered a stroke in December 2002, from which he recovered well enough to resume independent living and finally move to Albuquerque in 2004, where he and Annie lived next door to their son, Richard, for the remainder of their lives. Christian C. Saiser's final resting place is the Santa Fe National Cemetery. No formal services are planned other than the military burial ceremony in Santa Fe. If you wish to make a gesture in his honor, please send a donation to an animal rescue organization of your choice.

SHAHEN, TIMOTHY surrounded by his loving family, made his transition on December 7, 2012 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was born in Brooklyn, NY to Guy and Grace Shahen and was raised in a picture perfect beach village on Long Island. When he met his wife of thirty-nine years, Lori, it was love at first sight. Their adventures included: hiking the Grand Canyon with new boots, Tim's tenure as an Associate Professor at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona, ten years with Wells Fargo Bank in San Francisco, Ride the Rockies twice, Ride Oregon and years of adventure travel. Tim received his Bachelor's degree from Notre Dame University in 1965 and was an avid fan of the "Fighting Irish." He received his Master's and Doctorate degrees from Purdue University. For most of his career, Tim was a banker. Having met all traditional definitions of "success," Tim and Lori left Albuquerque and lived their dream of restoring a historic farmhouse property in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina and opening a Bed and Breakfast Inn. After selling the Inn in 2001, Tim and Lori made the 500 mile El Camino de Santiago pilgrimage across the northern mountains of Spain. Tim's laughter could be heard for miles and filled the hearts of everyone around him. He will be remembered for his kindness, his generosity, and his willingness to "be there no matter what" in times of struggle, suffering and joy. For Tim, love was a verb not a noun. In recent years, Tim's most satisfying times were spent at the Krain ranch in Colorado. There he strung fences, mothered baby calves and built irrigation systems. Tim's ashes will be taken to this place of beauty and peace where he lived out every boy's dream of being a "cowboy" with his dear friend, Leon. Tim is survived by his wife, Lori; his sister, Patricia Shahen; his nephews, Marcus Lee Shahen and Troy Lee Shahen; and his nieces, Karen Patricia (Yamhure) Frank, Laura Yamhure Thompson, and Kelly Michelle (Shahen) McBride. Tim's parents and beloved younger brother, Thomas Lee Shahen, made their transitions earlier and will welcome him home. In lieu of flowers, donations in Tim's name may be sent to: Albuquerque Reads - a Chamber of Commerce program of volunteer reading tutors who work with kindergarten school children to help them acquire strong reading skills. Donations may be sent to: Albuquerque Reads, attn: Beth Hemmerich, 115 Gold Avenue, SW, Suite 201, Albuquerque, NM 87102.
