DORAME, MICHAEL Age 78, he was a resident of Tularosa and Mescalero, NM passed away on Monday, December 10, 2012. A father of three, proud grandfather of four and longtime, respected educator. He is survived by his sons Michael Dean, Doug and wife Monica; daughter Raelene Dorame; grandchildren Dinee and Nena Dorame, Dana Rae and Dallas Peterson; sister Pat Montoya from Tularosa; as well as half-sisters Martha Knight, Henrietta Hitchens, Delores Zamora; and half-brother Tony Dorame. He was preceded in death by his first wife Nena Gutierrez Dorame who passed away in 1964 and then half-siblings Henry Dorame and Veronica Dorame. He was also married to Janet McKinley for 22 years. Born and raised in Mescalero by his grandparents Frank and Blasa Dorame, Michael attended Tularosa High School, graduated from Northern Colorado University in 1956, received his Master's Degree from the University of New Mexico in 1967. After graduating from Northern Colorado, he proudly served his country in the Korean War. Upon coming home, he worked for the Tularosa School District for 45 years as a teacher, basketball coach, counselor, principal, assistant superintendant and working his way up to superintendent from 1997-2004. He was named New Mexico Superintendent of the Year in 2001. He is a member of the New Mexico Activities Association Hall of Honor for his longtime service in interscholastic athletics and eventually became President of the NMAA in 1999-2002. Michael felt strongly that education was the great equalizer in our lives. After humble beginnings in Mescalero, he was the first in his family to obtain a college degree which led to his children's and grandchildren's success professionally and academically. He was well-loved and happy around friends and family. A Rosary will be celebrated at 7:00pm on December 19, 2012 at Queen of Heavens in Albuquerque, followed by a reception. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph's Apache Mission at 2:00pm in Mescalero followed by a burial in the Tularosa Cemetery.
