CLAUSSEN, ALICE WALTERS Widow of Paul D. Claussen, a well-known retired professional with The Boy Scouts of America, passed away. Alice was the daughter of L.D. and Mattie Walters of Arlington, SD, and as a young girl was disappointed she was not a boy, as she worked hard as bat girl and scorekeeper for her dad who managed a semi-pro baseball team. She got Babe Ruth's autograph on a baseball and herself was good in softball and track. But her greatest love became her four sons, her husband, and her work with him in the Boy Scouts of America, where she was given "first lady" status while he was General Manager at the Philmont Scout Ranch. She served as den leader, Boy Scout committeeman, and on the district teams, and was awarded the coveted Silver Beaver. But ahead of all else, her love of her Lord and her church permeated her life. She was active in both the Lutheran and Methodist churches. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist in Albuquerque. She was involved with the women's groups, taught Sunday school for 30 years, and was into church Christian education and drama. She was a member of the American Legion Auxilary, the 8 et 40, the Sorosis Clubs and several PEO chapters in different cities. At St. Paul's she helped initiate the bread ministry for visitors and welcomed so many as they entered for worship. She is survived by three of her five sons, Craig in Green Valley, AZ, Rex in Tuscon, and Mark and his wife, Paula, and their children Natalie and Adam in the San Diego area. She was so proud of her late son, Kurt, also a professional Boy Scouter, who had such great influence on so many scouts and adults in his short lifetime. She is grateful for all the volunteers in the areas she worked, who helped make this place a better world, and for her sons who were in the country's military. She, like her husband, lived this philosophy of life, "In a hundred years, it will not matter what kind of house I lived in, what kind of car I drove, or what was the size of my bank account, but that I was important in the lives of youth." A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's United Methodist Church at 2:00 pm on November 11, 2012, 9500 Constitution Ave. NE. Interment of her cremains will be in the family plot in Arlington, SD along-side her parents, her two sons, and Paul. She is survived by sisters, Joyce Schlack of Rapid City and Shirley Jacobs of Freeport, IL. She was preceded in death by her brother, Dave; and sisters, Lorraine Rasmussen and Mavis McNally. She leaves behind many loving friends; nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be given to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 9500 Constitution Blvd. NE. GOMEZ, JOE F. Jose Federico (Joe) Gomez passed away comfortably surrounded by those he loved in his Albuquerque, NM home last Thursday morning on his 82nd birthday, November 1, 2012. He was an Albuquerque entrepreneur, business owner, and philanthropist who's mark on the New Mexico business community will be indelible and enduring. Joe was born in Salem, NM in the lush Hatch Valley, the eldest offspring of Domingo and Eugenia Gomez. As a young boy he would ride his horse after chores along the banks of the Rio Grande from Caballo Reservoir to Radium Springs, and would later ride to, and camp, in the Gila Forest on days he wasn't farming. Domingo, a farmer and carpenter in the post-depression era, provided, along with Eugenia, a warm and loving environment for Joe and the three sisters that Domingo and Joe doted upon. Joe graduated from Las Cruces High School where he competed in track in the mile event, and was a member of the National Honor Society. He married his sweetheart Cecilia (Ceci) Montoya, daughter of Joe and Carmen Montoya of Mesquite, NM on August 30, 1952 in the San Jose Catholic Church in La Mesa, NM where they repeated their vows fifty years later before family and friends. Joe and Ceci enjoyed dining, dancing and "los luches" with friends in El Paso and Ciudad Jurez in their dating and early marriage years. Daughter Stella and son Gary came along in Las Cruces in the mid-fifties and sons Steve and Mike joined them in El Paso in the early-sixties. After raising their kids, Joe and Cecilia enjoyed traveling extensively abroad with their friends from the New Mexico and Texas business communities from the 1970s to the early 2000s. Joe distinguished himself in business from an early age rising to management positions in warehouse and retail operations for Safeway and ShopRite corporations managing operations in El Paso, TX; and Las Cruces, Albuquerque and Farmington, NM. At the age of 44, after years of planning, Joe liquidated personal assets that provided the capital for him to purchase his first business on Albuquerque's west side in June of 1975. He ultimately became the owner/operator of grocery stores, bakeries, gasoline stations, etc. as well a developer of residential and commercial properties throughout Albuquerque. Joe cultivated talent from the local area including youngsters from local high schools and mentored numerous loyal employees who have gone on to become successful business managers, owners, leaders and innovators in the retail, non-profit, banking, services, and development sectors throughout New Mexico and the rest of the world. He is fondly remembered by them for his belief in hard work, compassion and a straightforward business approach. He is survived by his loving wife of sixty years Cecilia, daughter Stella Marie Gomez-Pia, sons Gary Ronald and his wife Dena, Fred Steven, Michael David and his wife Joann, as well as his grandchildren, Cassaundra, Michael Joseph, Michelle, Matthew, Anthony Ray, Ashley, Victoria, Alexandra, Lauren, Shayna, and Rachel, his great-grandson Haeley. along with his sisters Maria Burhop of Oconomowoc, WI and Delores Gomez of Las Cruces, NM. He is preceded in death by his parents Eugenia and Domingo Gomez, adopted son Tim, nephew Danny Burhop, grandnephew Jonathon Delgado and sister Carmen Delgado. A rosary and funeral mass to celebrate his life will be held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Heart of Mary at 10 AM on Monday, Nov. 5, 2012. Rite of Committal will follow at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery. The Gomez family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to Joe's son Steve for the exceptional care he provided over the last two years.

GRONERT, PATRICIA S. Patricia Belle Sparlin Gronert, March 22, 1936 to October 31, 2012. She was born in Miles City, Montana; her mother and father owned and farmed wheat on a section of land a mile southwest of Brusett, MT. Pat's maternal grandmother (Lay's) was from Kirksville, MO (northeastern MO northern influence) and traveled by wagon train at age 4 years to Virginia City in 1876 the diary of this trip is in the library at Montana State University, Bozeman. The route followed the Iowa/Missouri border west, north to Council Bluffs and across the Missouri River on railroad flatbed cars, then followed the Platte River. Her father, Joseph Sparlin, was from southwestern MO, near Neosho (southern influence). There is a Sparlin family cemetery west of Neosho, just beyond the overhead railroad crossing. Bushwacking was a major problem and the Sparlins temporarily moved south to Arkansas to avoid this. Pat's father Joseph Sparlin died in the hospital at Warm Springs, MT when she was 2 years old and her mother finished her teaching degree to support them. She kept the ranch and shared farming wheat with the JE Stanton family. Pat and her mother and grandmother lived in Dillon for her degree, and then successively in Conrad, Powell, WY, and finally Lewistown. At Powell, her mother taught art to the Japanese children at the Heart Mountain WY internment camp. She moved after 6 months the people in Powell were unkind "She teaches Japs" and she moved to Lewistown. Pat was a gifted soprano from age 12. After high school in Lewistown, she studied one year at the University of Montana, Missoula, and then nursing at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL. In summer 1954, while on the obstetrics delivery ward, she met Gerald Gronert, a senior medical student working on the 3-11 shift as a nurse technician. The obstetrics ward delivered 50 babies every 24 hour period in 4 delivery rooms. Pat and Ger became engaged in about 3 weeks and were married by Rev. John Aye Ross on December 26, 1957 at the Methodist Church on the southwest corner of Ashland and Harrison. The church is long gone. They lived in a one room apartment at Mr. Allen's Apartments, then on the northwest corner of Damen and the rapid transit tracks. After graduation in 1958, they moved to St. Louis for Ger's internship at the City Hospital; Pat worked in pediatrics. They lived in the Pruitt-Igoe Housing project that was torn down in 1972. Their apartment was on the 9th floor; the elevator stopped at 1, 5, and 8, so moving in and out was a challenge. Brian Joseph Gronert was born at City Hospital March 8, 1959. In summer 1959 they moved to Denver for 2 years' residency and 5 years' private practice in anesthesia. The pediatric rotation was at LA Children's Hospital, Sept through Dec 1960. Pat and Ger drove in their Plymouth station wagon, and camped along the way, above the Toroweap Overlook on the North Rim and on the beach at Lake Mead. Nancy Ellen Gronert was born at Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital November 3, 1960 (indigent care for resident's families). They returned to Denver and Pat had Gail Ann December 1, 1963, and Mary Elizabeth May 21, 1965. They moved to Rochester, MN in summer 1966. Ger was drafted in 1967 and they had 2 years in San Antonio. Pat's interest in horses there led to buying Charley and Bingo. They returned to Rochester and she selected a 23 acre farm south of Pine Island for our home. In time she had 11 horses and ponies, a great time. Pat traveled by bus (limited parking) to Minneapolis to achieve a Bachelor's degree in Greek and Latin at the University of Minnesota. In 1986, we left MN for Davis, CA, and Pat selected a wonderful home with 6 acres pasture between Davis and Woodland for her horses and cats. Upon Ger's retirement in 1999, we moved to Albuquerque, with cats at home and 2 horses, Sam and Cash, boarded at Emile Gonzales' stable. Pat loved her cactus garden, walking the ditch trails, and the overall Albuquerque environment. She had a heart attack in September 2012, with damage to the septum between left and right ventricles. Despite surgery, her lungs were unable to recover from excessive blood flow and pressure, and she died after 54 hospital days.

HAYCOCK, JEAN M. Age 85, died on October 27, 2012. She was born on July 9, 1927 in Ludington, Michigan to Ivan H. and Mary Madeline Hamilton. She was preceded in death by her husband Glenn M Haycock. She is survived by son Scott Haycock; daughter Beth Jones and husband Paul, all of Albuquerque; granddaughter Heather Norton and three great-grandchildren; as well as numerous friends who loved her and will miss her. She met Glenn through mutual friends, and they married in 1957. She loved spending time with both of her children, and maintained a close relationship with them until her death. Jean was an avid dog lover and always had much-loved canine companions to keep her company. She was an active bridge player, playing with the same group of friends for 50 years. She was also a quilter, and loved reading and watching old classic movies. She loved to travel, usually with her cousin Pat, and cherished her memorable trips to Scotland, England, Norway and other far-flung places. She was famous for her fudge, and friends always looked forward to receiving their annual Christmas gift of Jean's mouth-watering homemade fudge. But above all, Jean was best known for her gregarious nature, her quick wit and ready laughter, and her keen, carefree enjoyment of living. She will be sorely missed by family and friends alike. Cremation has already taken place. Burial will be at Santa Fe National Cemetery; date and time to be determined. There are no plans at present for a memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jean's memory to either the American Macular Degeneration Foundation (www.macular.org) or to the Animal Humane Association (www. animalhumanenm.org) would be appreciated by the family.

PARNALL, ANGELINA MACRI On September 19, 2012, Angelina Macri Parnall, passed away as gently as she had always lived. She had just celebrated her 94th birthday with her family and friends, whom she loved and cherished every day of her life. Angelina was born on September 8, 1918, in Rochester New York, to her mother, Caroline Mauro Macri and her father, Frank Macri, both originally from Calabria, Italy. She began her lifelong joy with music at age five. She took violin lessons at the Eastman School of Music, entering the University of Rochester and the formal Eastman music program on scholarship at age 16. She graduated from Eastman at the University of Rochester with honors in 1939, two years after she married her husband, longtime Albuquerque orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Edward Parnall. During World War II, she traveled from post to post with her husband at a number of Army Hospitals where he was stationed, before coming to Albuquerque in 1946. She and her husband lived for many years in the South Valley community of Atrisco, where she developed friends who enriched her life up to her last days. She was a member of the Sigma Alpha Iota musical sorority, being awarded the Sword of Honor in the Albuquerque Chapter in 1966. She performed in both ensemble and solo work throughout her life. Angelina loved music, and her violin, and was a dedicated musician, but she always put her family as her first priority. Always. There was never any mistake about that: Angelina or "Nana" was never as happy as when she was celebrating or visiting with her family, either at her favorite restaurants or out on her porch. Holidays were always a special enjoyment for her, playing her violin on Christmas Eve, watching Edward carve the turkey or the roast beef, or singing Auld Lang Syne with friends and family on New Year's Eve. She faced the world with great courage and grace, always open to new intellectual and cultural challenges, whether it was negotiating her way through Asian airports, or learning how to use each new computer technology and Skype. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Edward, her sister, Annette Dunnigan, and her daughter, Carolyn Parnall Fink. Angelina is survived, remembered and loved by her sons, Theodore (Ted),and his spouse, Kathryn, William Edward (Bill),and his partner, Rodina Cave, her seven grandchildren, Robert Edward Friedenberg, and his spouse, Rachel, of Ashborn, Virginia, and Anne Swanson, and her spouse, Rick of North Richland Hills Texas, David Parnall and his spouse, Kelli, of Berkeley, California, Bert and Charles Parnall, and their spouses, Marta and Valorie Aquino, Taylor Parnall, Jason Fink and his spouse, Tracy Clark, all of Albuquerque; her 14 great-grandchildren, Taylor, Zoe, Isabel, Emma, Adam, Malcolm, Ian, Mirabai, Bailey, Jacob, Will, Olivia, Viktor and Binah; and her niece, Diane Biddle and her spouse, Dave, of Greendale, Wisconsin; and her nephew, Gary Dunnigan and his spouse, Betty, of Decatur, Georgia. Our family would like to thank those many friends who have called or written to express their appreciation and support. There will be a private interment, but friends are invited to a memorial to celebrate her life at 5:00 p.m., Saturday, November 10, 2012 at FRENCH - University, 1111 University Blvd. NE. PORTER, ESTHER L. On June 28, 1913, Esther Loreen Porter was born in Chicago, IL, and went home to be with her Lord on October 29, 2012, in Albuquerque, NM, at the wonderful age of 99. Esther was greeted in Heaven by all her loved ones who passed before her. Private services have taken place through French Funerals and she was laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Park alongside her parents, husband, daughter and grandson. Esther graduated from Moody Bible Institute, Summa Cum Laude, in 1935, as an accomplished Musician, Class Secretary, and Bible Scholar. She was a concert pianist and could play any instrument. She was one of those amazingly talented people, who had perfect pitch, but she loved her accordion the most and that's what she chose to play. Esther's love of people led her to be a Missionary. Her first mission was in the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky where she served for three years. In 1939 she married her sweetheart and they moved to Arkansas where she and her husband established a new church and started a family. They moved to Albuquerque in 1949 for her husband's health, but in 1950 he passed away leaving Esther with two young daughters. Being a widow, Esther had to work, raise her children and build a home all by herself. She decided to stay in Albuquerque where she had built relationships serving as a missionary among the Indians whom she so dearly loved. Esther taught the Bible and shared her love of music with all. She always said there was something special about her Pueblo friends and was fortunate enough to become an adopted family member. Her love for her family and friends was unconditional and was such a gentle soul always finding the best in everyone she met. She guided everyone to find purpose and faith in their everyday lives and we were blessed to have been a part of that wonderful, gentle, and generous life. Thank you Mother and Grandma for your love and all you did for us. We love you and you will be greatly missed by all. FRENCH 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE (505) 823-9400

TRAUX, ANNE THORSEN The family of Anne Thorsen Truax records with sorrow the passing of our matriarch at the age of 87 on October 31, 2012 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Anne lived her long life with vigor, joy, and as a fierce fighter for justice. Her most important support came from her family, friends and feminism. The possessor of an active but roaming intelligence, she had multiple interests: classical music, biology, words, gardening, her brother's medical books, crossword puzzles and reading. After college and graduate school in anthropology, she worked at the University of Minnesota, where she served as the Director of the Minnesota Women's Center, directing a program assisting women to find their way back to the working world. Later she was active in founding the Women's Studies department and the Center for Advanced Feminist Studies, and ended her years at Minnesota as the sexual harassment officer for the Office of Equal Opportunity. Her most cherished survivor is her partner of 36 years, Judith Wanhala, without whom she would never have had such a loving, satisfying, mutually beneficial and content life. Judy and Anne moved to Albuquerque in 2001 and delighted in the high desert life. Anne is also survived by her five sons, Tom (Rebecca Pavlenko), David, Steve (Penny), John (Diana Lewis), and Rick -all fine men, good citizens and excellent cooks. They gifted her with above average and merry grandchildren: Colby Mattson (Nicki), Sam Truax (Karen), Helen, Martha, Peter and Maggie Truax. Cedar and Linden Mattson, and Henry Truax represent the fourth generation. She is also survived by ten nieces and nephews, the children of her deceased brother, David Thorsen and her deceased sister, Jane Westley, and by many friends. A private service will be held; a public memorial service will be held at a later date.

WINCHELL, JAMES R. Jim's many friends fondly remember this gentle giant who, ten years ago, brushed the molt of guardian angels from his shoulders and stepped into the ages. He taught so much to so many, his classroom extending from the bowels of the earth to the outer limits of the universe. Though human in every respect, his heart was bigger than the sky. Jim lives on, for a part of him continues in each of us who was fortunate in having been touched by this unusual man. When you gaze deeply into the heavens you might catch a fleeting glimpse of the spirit of Jim Winchell aboard a shooting star.
