Obituary for PARNALL

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday November 04, 2012

PARNALL, ANGELINA MACRI On September 19, 2012, Angelina Macri Parnall, passed away as gently as she had always lived. She had just celebrated her 94th birthday with her family and friends, whom she loved and cherished every day of her life. Angelina was born on September 8, 1918, in Rochester New York, to her mother, Caroline Mauro Macri and her father, Frank Macri, both originally from Calabria, Italy. She began her lifelong joy with music at age five. She took violin lessons at the Eastman School of Music, entering the University of Rochester and the formal Eastman music program on scholarship at age 16. She graduated from Eastman at the University of Rochester with honors in 1939, two years after she married her husband, longtime Albuquerque orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Edward Parnall. During World War II, she traveled from post to post with her husband at a number of Army Hospitals where he was stationed, before coming to Albuquerque in 1946. She and her husband lived for many years in the South Valley community of Atrisco, where she developed friends who enriched her life up to her last days. She was a member of the Sigma Alpha Iota musical sorority, being awarded the Sword of Honor in the Albuquerque Chapter in 1966. She performed in both ensemble and solo work throughout her life. Angelina loved music, and her violin, and was a dedicated musician, but she always put her family as her first priority. Always. There was never any mistake about that: Angelina or "Nana" was never as happy as when she was celebrating or visiting with her family, either at her favorite restaurants or out on her porch. Holidays were always a special enjoyment for her, playing her violin on Christmas Eve, watching Edward carve the turkey or the roast beef, or singing Auld Lang Syne with friends and family on New Year's Eve. She faced the world with great courage and grace, always open to new intellectual and cultural challenges, whether it was negotiating her way through Asian airports, or learning how to use each new computer technology and Skype. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Edward, her sister, Annette Dunnigan, and her daughter, Carolyn Parnall Fink. Angelina is survived, remembered and loved by her sons, Theodore (Ted),and his spouse, Kathryn, William Edward (Bill),and his partner, Rodina Cave, her seven grandchildren, Robert Edward Friedenberg, and his spouse, Rachel, of Ashborn, Virginia, and Anne Swanson, and her spouse, Rick of North Richland Hills Texas, David Parnall and his spouse, Kelli, of Berkeley, California, Bert and Charles Parnall, and their spouses, Marta and Valorie Aquino, Taylor Parnall, Jason Fink and his spouse, Tracy Clark, all of Albuquerque; her 14 great-grandchildren, Taylor, Zoe, Isabel, Emma, Adam, Malcolm, Ian, Mirabai, Bailey, Jacob, Will, Olivia, Viktor and Binah; and her niece, Diane Biddle and her spouse, Dave, of Greendale, Wisconsin; and her nephew, Gary Dunnigan and his spouse, Betty, of Decatur, Georgia. Our family would like to thank those many friends who have called or written to express their appreciation and support.
