Abeyta -- Joseph"Mark" Abeyta, 38, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died Thursday, April 18, 2002. He is survived by his parents, Manuel and Frances Abeyta; son, Joseph Andrew Abeyta; fiancé, Monica Roybal; mother of his son, Andrea Abeyta, all of Albuquerque; a number of aunts and uncles; and nephew, Julian Christopher Gallegos of Albuquerque. Rosary will be recited Sunday, 6:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE. Mass will be celebrated Monday, 10:00 a.m., at San Felipe de Neri Catholic Church, 2005 Plaza NW, Old Town. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Arthur -- Warren H. Arthur, 81, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, lost his battle with Parkinson's Disease April 16, 2002. He was born in Webster County, WV., November 21, 1920. Mr. Arthur is survived by his wife of 57 years, Norma Lee of the family home; three children, Barbara Sue, Beverly Gay, and Warren Allen (Sonny) and wife, Midge; two grandchildren, Travis Allen and Kayce Alaine Arthur. Mr. Arthur served with distinction in the US. Army First Armored Division (Old Ironsides), Fort Knox, Kentucky, from 1940-1945. He attained the rank of First Sergeant, Tank Commander, and was involved in campaigns in North Africa, Tunisia, Italy-Naples, and Arno-Rome. Mr. Arthur served his country proudly and received many citations and decorations. Among them, the European African Eastern Theater Ribbon with four Bronze Stars, HQ First Armored Division Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, and American Defense Service Medals. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to West Virginia and served in the National Guard, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant. The family moved to Albuquerque in 1953 and Mr. Arthur served in the New Mexico National Guard from 1956 to 1962 as a Company Commander. Mr. Arthur was a valued employee of Sandia National Labs for 28 years, as a heavy equipment mechanic. A private family graveside service with military honors will be held. Beyer -- John Beyer, age 81, died April 11, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ruth C. Beyer; one daughter; three sons; five grandchildren; sisters, Janet Beyer and Margaret Swope both of Tucson, AZ; and numerous other relatives. John retired from Blue Cross Blue Shield. He led a very active life pursuing artistic endeavors including pottery making. Many of his pieces were displayed and sold in a local gallery. Bustos -- Viola Bustos passed away April 18, 2002 in Pleasant Hill, CA. She was 84. A native of New Mexico, Viola graduated from Seaton School of Nursing in Colorado Springs, CO in 1941. She worked as a registered nurse for more than 30 years. She participated with Our Lady of Fatima Church, Albuquerque. The Blue Army Prayer Group and Christ the King Church in Pleasant Hill, CA. Viola is survived by daughters, Gloria, Rita and Laural Bustos and Linda Brosamer (Robert); sons, Benjamin (Marylou) and Manuel Bustos; sisters, Lila Maes of Santa Fe, NM, Adeline Fuggiti of Chicago, IL, Ermina Rudolph of Las Vegas, NV; brother, Manuel Alcon of Mora, NM; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Her husband of 51 years, Benjamin Bustos, died in 1992. A Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday at French Mortuary, 1111 University Blvd. NE in Albuquerque. Castillo -- Jacob died peacefully at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital on April 18, 2002. Dad was born March 3, 1932 in Aragon, NM. He is survived by; his wife, Eloisa of Albuquerque; his daughter, Gloria Traynham and husband, Jeff; his sons, Robert and Daniel Castillo; eight grandchildren, Sean and Jeff Holt, Danny, Alec and Matt Castillo, Michelle, Nicole and Kristen Traynham; two great-grandsons, Isaiah and Sean Holt; two sisters; two brothers; and many nieces and nephews. He graduated from Belen High School in 1950 where he lettered in football and played on the all-star football team. He was a ranger during the Korean War Conflict and he received the Purple Heart. He graduated from the University of Albuquerque with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1968. He was a member of the DAV, VFW and the American Legion. His parents; Martin and Atanacia Castillo; and his brother, Ramon, preceded him in death. Cremation will be handled by Fitzgerald and Son Funeral Directors. A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Ghost Church, 833 Arizona S.E. in Albuquerque. Contreras -- Eluteria (Lou) Garcia-Contreras, 92, passed away, February 25, 2002 at Issaquah, WA. Born February 9, 1910 in Albuquerque, New Mexico Territory, the daughter of Santos Garcia and Delfinia O'Donnell-Garcia. She graduated from Holy Trinity High School, Trinidad, Co. She cared for her four children while her husband, Eligio Contreras served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. She loved her native Albuquerque but was willing to establish a new home for her family in Seattle to be with her husband who joined the Boeing Company in 1948. He preceded her in death in 1982. Her devotion to her family was manifested in many ways. She also reared a foster child to adulthood. A devout Catholic, she was a member of St. Benedict Parish in Seattle until her death. She was a volunteer at Providence Hospital for over 20 years. She bowled on a team until just 3 years ago, and participated in the YWCA water aerobics program in downtown Seattle. Revered by her grandchildren, two of them opened a restaurant in Belltown, Seattle, named in her honor, call Tia Lou's, serving some of her favorite recipes. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by; brother, Ben Garcia, Denver; Margaret Chavez, Albuquerque; and Merle Davis, Moriarty, NM. Esquibel -- Steve Esquibel, 30, passed away April 17, 2002 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Steve was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan and he will be missed by all of his friends and relatives. He was preceded in death by his father, George Esquibel Sr.; and nephew, Matthew Esquibel. Steve is survived by his mother, Betty Esquibel; his brother, George Esquibel Jr.; a special niece, Leanza Esquibel; several cousins, aunts, uncles, other family and friends who loved and will miss him. Hizel -- J. Thomas died Friday evening April 12 in a hospital in Guadalajara Mexico. Tom was born April 30, 1933, in McCook, Nebraska, to Margarite and Alexsander Hizel.His parents precede him in death , as well as, his brother Robert. Tom was a loving father to his surviving daughters, Erika Hizel of San Antonio, Texas (and granddog Kimo), and Alexis of Las Cruces, New Mexico. His sister also survives, Dorothy Hansmeyer of California. Funeral services are pending in Mexico where Tom had lived for the past several years.

Johnston -- Ada F. Johnston, 89, a longtime resident of Martinez, CA died in Albuquerque, Friday, April 12, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arlo C. Johnston in 1997. Ada touched many hearts during her long life and will be dearly missed. Juarez -- Benito Juarez Sr. 33, beloved and dedicated father, husband and brother lost his fight to cancer on Friday, April 12, 2002 at the University of New Mexico Hospital. Born in Namiquipa, Chihuahua on April 14, 1968 to Simon Juarez and Gudelia Acosta Juarez, he had recently been employed at La Fonda Restaurant as a Manager. Prior to that, he was employed as a Manager for Gardunos of Mexico for ten years. Benito is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Bolivar Juarez; and three sons, Benito Jr. 11, Luis Angel 7, and Carlos Juarez 2; other survivors include three brothers, Rogelio and Erasmo Juarez of Dona Ana and Refugio Juarez of Las Cruces; four sisters, Evila and Guadalupe Juarez of Albuquerque, Irma Lechuga of Denver, Colorado and Elizabeth Chacon of Clovis; many nephews and nieces also survive him. As was his wish to move to Las Cruces, NM to live, Benito was laid to rest on Tuesday, April 16, 2002 at the Masonic Cemetery in Las Cruces, NM. Serving as Casket Bearers were Rogelio, Erasmo and Refugio Juarez, Jose Luis and Victor Bolivar and Alfredo Rodriguez. Honorary Bearers were Rolando Chacon and Martin Lechuga. A Mass in his honor will be held at a later date in the Albuquerque area. Kubitz -- Carol Summerside Kubitz, age 90, passed away April 13, 2002 at her home in Albuquerque. She was born November 16, 1911 in Huron, South Dakota to Frank and Caroline (Oestreich) Summerside. She was a resident of the Montebello Retirement Community for the past seven years. Prior to her move to Albuquerque she and her husband, Vern were residents of Gallup since 1954. She graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1934 and taught physical education until her marriage in 1938. In Gallup, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was extremely active with a number of community organizations including the American Association of University Women, the Hospital Auxiliary, Girl Scouts and was a 50 year member of the Eastern Star of Redfield South Dakota. She is survived by daughters, Anne Jue of Tucson, AZ, Julie Lucas (Curtis) of Hobbs, NM and Jill Chavez (Lee) of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Randy Jue, Debbie Jue, Lory Nunez (Ben), Kevin Lucas, Stephanie Behrens (Kirk), and Domonic Chavez; and great-grandchildren, Allison Jue, Stetson and Emma Lucas, Derrick and Cera Nunez, Christopher and Nicholas Behrens. She is survived by siblings, Robert Summerside of Pierre, SD, George Summerside of Libby, MT, Frank Summerside of La Mars, IA, and Rosemary Meyers of Phoenix, AZ. Mrs. Kubitz was preceded in death by her husband, Vern in 1984; son-in-law, Jim Jue; siblings, Dorothy Taylor, Helen Lawson, and Jean Summerside. Lawrence -- Alice Gertrude Lawrence. A loving mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother has moved on to a healthier life to be with God. After a long battle with cancer, Alice has finally joined her late husband, Luther Dewey Lawrence, on April 18, 2002. She is survived by four sisters; her five children, Ron Lawrence and wife, David Lawrence and wife, Claudia Duran, Jeanie Tapia, and Steven Lawrence. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was a simple, loving and gentle woman that will be greatly missed by many friends and loved ones. Cremation has taken place at French Mortuary and a Memorial will be held Sunday April 21, 2002 for family members and close friends at a family residence. Burial will take place Tuesday April 23, 2002 at the Santa Fe National Cemetery where she will peacefully be laid to rest with her best friend and husband.

Martinez -- Raymond G. Martinez September 7,1917 - April 18, 2002A lifetime resident of Santa Fe, New Mexico went home to our Lord on Thursday, April 18, 2002. Mr. Martinez was born on September 7, 1917, in Ojo de la Vaca, NM, to Pedro and Francesquita Martinez. The family moved to Santa Fe when he was a young child, where he would live for the rest of his life. In 1942, Mr. Martinez joined the U.S. Army and served proudly with Company D, 351st Infantry Regiment, 88th Infantry Division, in Northern Africa and saw extensive combat action in Italy during World War II. Upon his return to Santa Fe, he met Luisa Lujan during Fiestas and they were married in 1946. Mr. Martinez was a friend to all. A man of his word, reliable, dependable and a great source of stability to his family and friends. He was so very kind, gentle and unselfish; always ready to offer a helping hand, quiet and patient asking little and giving so much. He taught by example and left a lasting impression to anyone who was willing to learn. Talented, but humble, Mr. Martinez was a master brick layer and plasterer who used this gift from God to create beautiful masterpieces. He was a parishioner of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Santa Fe and a member of La Union Protectiva. He was preceded in death by his wife, Luisa; his parents; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Daniel and Isabelita, Alfonso, Salomon and Frances, and Antonio and Socorro; and his sisters, Eloisa, Anita, Angelina Martinez and Flora Garcia and husband, Fidel; and two beloved, sisters-in-law, Josefita Romero and Frances Gutierrez. Mr. Martinez is survived by his sister, Adelaida Garcia; and sister-in-law, Mary Martinez; his children, Cecilia Martinez of Santa Fe, Christella Aguirre and husband, Mariano of Albuquerque, Josina Cisneros and husband, Larry of Santa Fe, Ralph Martinez and wife, Diana of Albuquerque; his beloved grandchildren, Jennifer Parkins and husband, Josh, Odelia, Samantha, and Raymond Martinez all of Albuquerque; great-grandchildren who were the light of his life, Mya Martinez and Aidan Parkins. Also, his"adopted hita," Julie Gallegos; and numerous other close family members and friends. Montoya -- Hipolito ¯Paul¯ Montoya Jr., 74, a lifetime resident of Albuquerque, died Friday, April 19, 2002. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend. Perkins -- Robert McClure Perkins, Rio Rancho, NM, died April 17, 2002, of complications from a truck-automobile accident occurring on November 20, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Rosemary; and sons, Peter and Steve; and stepdaughter, Dawn, who live with their families in Colorado. Also surviving are stepdaughter, Joy and family, Rio Rancho and Albuquerque. He is predeceased by his parents; and a half-brother. Perkins was born October 6, 1924, Idaho Falls, ID, but grew up in Olean, NY. He served in the European Theater in WWII and attended the University of Denver after the war, spending most of his adult years in Denver. He was an architect, read prolifically, and enjoyed music and being a jokester. Perkins actively served his church, Rio Rancho Presbyterian, in many capacities. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, April 22, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at the church, 1004-24th Street, Rio Rancho, NM 87124. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the music fund at the church.

Potter -- Marilyn Ruth Potter, 75, longtime resident of Los Alamos, NM, passed away after a brave battle against ovarian cancer on Thursday, April 18, 2002. Marilyn was born on October 8, 1926, in Chicago, Illinois. She attended the Art Institute of Chicago from 1944-1947. After her marriage on July 2, 1947, to Robert Potter, they moved to Los Alamos, NM. Marilyn most recently lived in Rio Rancho, NM. Her artistic creativity was lifelong: At life drawing classes, as a substitute art teacher in the Los Alamos Public Schools and the art she created in her beautiful, personalized cards and letters. She had a contagious smile, out-going personality and was a wonderful cook. She will be dearly missed. She is survived by her husband, Robert, who shared in their wonderful marriage of 54 years; sister, Patricia Hinkley and husband, Jack of Garden Grove, California; five loving children, including Stephen Potter and wife, Sydney, Christine Pugh and husband, John, Jared and wife, Cathy and former wife, Marsha, Jeffrey and wife, Deborah, Elizabeth Niccum and husband, Rod; grandchildren, Kevin and Jennifer Potter, Nicole Pugh, Jeremy, Joe, Angela, Joshua and Danny Niccum, Garrin Royer and wife, Courtney and twins, Brendan and Brian Royer; and their wivesm Jen and Christine Royer, Cristoph Pugh; and great-grandchildren, Bella Royer, Nshrimgadeva, Vas and Sham Pugh. She was preceded in death by her father, Frances Moran; and mother, Adeline Rieger; and Addie's twin sister, Mildred Rieger. There will be a Memorial Service at the United Church in Los Alamos, 2525 Canyon Road, on Monday, April 22 at 11:00 a.m. At Marilyn's request, friends and family are invited to speak in her memory and sing"Morning Has Broken." Rose -- Mary Jane ("Jerry") Rose, 85, died at home on April 16, 2002. Mary Jane Brown was born in Michigan, graduated from Kingswood School in Bloomfield Hills, and Chevy Chase Junior College. She married William I. Rose in 1936, and moved to New Mexico with her family in 1950, when her husband founded Sun Country Industries. She lived on the west side of the Rio Grande, within sight of the bosque and Sandia Mountain. Jerry and her husband"Willy" both loved reading and helped build the Corrales Community Library. They were also proud leaders in the creation of the"Corrales Swimming Club," a social club with a rustic homemade outdoor pool that gathered friends in Corrales every summer day for 25 years. Jerry was a past president of All Faith's Home and the La Luz Landowners Association. She was a supporter and volunteer for the New Mexico Museum of Natural History, Planned Parenthood, and feeding the homeless. After Willy died in 1966, Jerry constantly expanded her circle of friends, always finding some to join her for a trip, an interesting class, a bit of dancing, a round of bridge, or some dixieland or blues. She organized a good share of her friends' social plans, and all her family's frequent reunions as well. She took her grandchildren on many far away adventures. Her 70th birthday party at the Palace Hotel in 1986 was a highlight. Her initiative and joy will be sorely missed. Jerry was preceded in death by her husband, William I. Rose; her brother, Aaron S. Brown; her sister, Elizabeth (Botts) Pulakos; a daughter, Sally Zolman; and two grandsons. She is survived by; a daughter, Elizabeth McElvain of Lemitar, New Mexico; a son, William I. Rose of Houghton, Michigan; five grandchildren: Jennifer Lind, Kristin Maas, Guy McElvain, Christopher and Jason Rose; and seven great-grandchildren. A gathering of family and friends will take place on May 5, 2002 at 5:00-9:00 p.m. at her home. Instead of flowers, the family suggests gifts to support the Corrales Community Library or the New Mexico Museum of Natural History. Cremation was handled by Sunrise Society, 891-8200.

Schuessler -- Lynn Kay Schuessler, age 53, was born in Beltonne, TX and was a long-time resident of Albuquerque. She is survived by her husband, Eric Schuessler; daughter, Rhonda Templin; son, Warren Schuessler; step-daughter, Chris Lyle; and her five grandchildren, Karsten, KayLynn, Brittany, MacKenzie and Ian. Stiteler -- Judith Miller Stiteler, 61, born in Trinidad, Colorado, October 11, 1940, passed away on April 18, 2002 at her home in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She attended Peru Prep and Peru State College, receiving her BA in 1961. She was a violin student of Victor Jindra from the age of eleven and majored in music at Peru. She taught strings in the public schools of Fort Morgan, Colorado in 1964. After receiving her MA from LSU in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1963, she moved to Albuquerque, performing with the Albuquerque Chamber Orchestra and the New Mexico Symphony, as well as teaching strings in Albuquerque Public Schools. In 1965, Judith and David Stiteler were married, and Albuquerque was their home for 37 years. When arthritis curbed Judith's violin performances, she decided to pursue a nursing degree and went back to school at the age of 47. She received her BSN from the University of New Mexico in 1989, and worked for the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Albuquerque until Dave's retirement in 1992. After retirement, Dave and Judith traveled the world, riding camels in the Middle East, spending 11 months in South East Asia, sending e-mails from China, and voyaging to the Arctic Circle and the Antarctic. Judith's last visit abroad was in December, 2001, when she returned from a scuba diving trip in Belize where she earned her advanced open water scuba certification. Judith is survived by; her husband, David; son, Adrian, daughter-in-law, Sissy; and grandson, Caleb of Carlsbad, New Mexico; daughter, Rachel of Albuquerque; brother, Hanford Jr. of Cowdrey, Colorado; and a multitude of friends and family around the world. Her special talent for connecting with people will be sorely missed. She was preceded in death by her parents Hanford and Edith Miller of Peru, Nebraska; and a brother, David Miller of Bloomfield, Iowa. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Judith's life will be held at Seagull Street restaurant in Albuquerque on April 27, 2002 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Judith's name may be made to the Chamber Orchestra of Albuquerque, 2730 San Pedro NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87110.

Torres -- Elisa Pino Torres, daughter of Agneda and Augustin Pino, died peacefully in her sleep in Anchorage, Alaska on April 16, 2002 with her daughter, Janice beside her. Lisa, as she was fondly known, was born in Santa Fe on November 27, 1920. She was awarded an acedemic scholarship to attend Loretto Academy for high school. After graduating, she worked in Los Alamos in the early years of WWII. She married Matias Torres in 1943. They lived in many different places during their marriage, including Georgia, California, Alaska and Spain, but spent the majority of their marriage in Albuquerque. After Los Alamos, Lisa devoted her life to her family. She loved children, especially babies, and delighted in her grandchildren, Fredric, Peter, Julie, Bree, Teal, Caley and Joel. She remained devoted to the Catholic Church throughout her life. Lisa is survived by her brother, Tinsy Pino of Albuquerque; sister, Pilar Ruiz of Albuquerque; her daughters, Janice Torres of Anchorage, Alaska, Judy Harris of Everett, Washington and Betty Ramage of Olympia, Washington. From Lisa, her daughters learned to be strong, independent women. Matt, her loving husband and partner, preceded her in death in 1988. Memorial donations may be made to the Carmelite Nuns, 49 Mount Carmel Rd, Santa Fe New Mexico 87501-4597. A Rosary will be recited for Elisa at 7:00 p.m. Monday, April 22, 2002 at St. Charles Borromeo, 1818 Coal Pl. SE in Albuquerque. Mass will be celebrated 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Charles Borromeo. Burial will take place at National Cemetery in Santa Fe at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
