Bettinger -- Takako Bettinger, age 78 and a resident of Albuquerque for 27 years died Friday, October 22, 1999, following an illness. Mrs. Bettinger is survived by her husband, John L. Bettinger; one daughter, Mildred Griffee and her husband, James all of Albuquerque; one step-son, Brian A. Bettinger and his wife, Kathryn of CA; and a sister, Fusako Hayakawa of Japan. Mrs. Bettinger was a member of Temple Baptist Church. Funeral Services will be held Monday, October 25, 1999 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Fitzgerald and Son Funeral Directors, 3113 Carlisle NE with pastor, Fred Gurule of Temple Baptist Church officiating. Capels -- Michael W."Mike" Capels, age 30, passed away on October 10, 1999 in Des Moines, Iowa, where he was a resident since 1992. He loved fishing and hunting in Iowa. Mike was born in Albuquerque on October 2, 1969, was a longtime resident and attended schools in Albuquerque until he moved to Iowa. He is survived by his father, William and wife, Nancy Capels of Albuquerque; his mother, Helen and husband, Dale Strong of Tempe, AZ; his sisters, Karen and husband, Kenneth Miller of McKinney, TX, Kathryn and husband, Stewart of Sarasota, FL; his brother, Christopher and wife, Rachelle Capels of Santa Cruz, CA; his nephew, Gregory Miller; and by his niece, Kelly Miller. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 27, 1999, 6:30 p.m., at Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church (8600 Academy Rd. NE) with Pastor Larry Moss officiating. Private interment will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Door of Faith Mission, 1006 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa 50309.

Kirschensteiner -- Wilbert G. Kirschensteiner, 90, an Albuquerque resident since 1980, died Friday, October 22, 1999. Mr. Kirschensteiner was a veteran of WWII, having served with the 326th Gilder Infantry, 13th Airborne Division, US Army. He was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Community. Survivors include his sister, Florence Moeller of Albuquerque; nephews, William Moeller of Madison, AL, Charles Moeller of Albuquerque, and Robert Moeller of Ft. Washington, MD; several nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews, and great-grandnieces and nephews. Leffler -- LaVerne Clark Leffler, 77, a resident of Albuquerque since 1946, died Saturday, October 23, 1999. She is survived by her husband, Walter, of the family home; sons, Albert, and his wife, Kathy of Phoenix, Arizona, and Douglas, and his wife, Nancy of Rio Rancho; daughters, Beverly Chavez and her husband Bill of Albuquerque, Candace, and her companion Robert Sisneros of Santa Fe; and six grandchildren, Ambre Leffler, Holly Leffler, Erin Chavez, Ryan Chavez, Kaitlyn Leffler and Glenna Leffler. Additionally, LaVerne is survived by her nephew, David Stephens, and his wife, Sharon of Colorado Springs; niece, Georgia Stephens of Shreveport; and great-niece, Jennifer Stephens of Santa Fe. She was born in Dickens, Texas, and graduated from Amarillo High School and Texas Tech University and was an active and long-time member of Second Presbyterian Church in Albuquerque. She was also a member of the Martineztown House of Neighborly Service Auxiliary in Albuquerque and Church Women Untied. LaVerne was a member of PEO Chapter AM. Moctezuma -- Eleanor A. Moctezuma, 63, a resident of Rio Rancho for the past four years, and a lifetime resident of New Mexico. Eleanor was born August 1, 1936 the daughter of Manuel G. and Candelaria Gabeldon Flores in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was preceded in death by one son, Joseph"Jo Jo" Marquez. Eleanor is survived by her four children, Steve Marquez and wife, Virgie of Albuquerque, Lorraine Mascarenaz and husband, Dennis of Rio Rancho, and Kenneth Marquez of Rio Rancho; grandchildren, Ricky and Maranda, Benji and Janice, Toni and Mark, Jenifer, Dennis, Kassandra, and Anna; great-grandchildren, Lori, Tiffinni, Jacquelina, and Joseph. Qualls -- Shirley M. Exter Qualls, born December 15, 1920, passed away early October 19, 1999 after a long illness. She was a native of Albuquerque and the last surviving child of A.J. Exter, pioneer funeral director and humanitarian of the State of New Mexico. She was known widely for her volunteer efforts with disabled and elderly people, as well as her family. She enjoyed watching golf, Jeopardy, and Bob Barker. She was also a talented artist who designed one of the first Harley-Davidson logos. Shirley and her twin sister, Kathryn were talented dancers in their youth and performed at various city events, including the Kimo Theater, Sunshine Theater, and the Albuquerque Little Theater. The Exter twins can also be remembered by the Albuquerque streets, Shirley and Kathryn, which were named after them. She was dearly loved by many friends and family who will miss her quick wit and big smile. She will be laid to rest next to her twin sister, Kathryn Frei, at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. She is survived by her daughter, Janice Atchley and husband, Dan of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Tracy Leonard and Cynthia Staat of Rio Rancho and Travis Leonard and Dena Becker of Albuquerque, Trisha Leonard and Frank Troncosa of Albuquerque; great-grandchildren, Bobby and Mitchell Carrillo of Rio Rancho, Frankie Troncosa and Jesse Troncosa, both of Albuquerque; niece, Patti Scherer and husband, Jack; and great-nephews, Patrick and Christopher; niece, Lori Carroll and great-nephews, Don and Brandon; niece, Barbi Grace and husband, James and great-nieces, Kathryn and Kristina; nephew, Larry Frei and great-nephews, Jason and Bryan, all of Albuquerque; nephews, Robert Exter of California and Lauren Exter of Canada; and cousin, Ken Current and his son, Steve of Lexington, KY. Rael -- Severo Rael, 74, passed away at home, October 23, 1999 after a long battle with cancer. A native New Mexican, he served proudly aboard the USS Colorado in WWII, an accomplished general contractor and owner of Severo Rael Construction Co. He is survived by his wife, Angie Rael; sons, Ralph Vigilante and wife, Stacey, Jack Vigilante and wife, Norma, Jerry Rael and wife, Joann, and pat Rael; daughters, Emma Lopez and husband, Julian, Emily Buford, and numerous grandchildren; and great-grandchildren; brothers, Anastacio, Ysidro, and Joe; sisters, Frances, Cecilia, Florence, and numerous family and friends who loved and will miss him. Reineke -- Robert C. (Bob) Reineke, 82, a resident of Albuquerque since 1952, died Saturday, October 16, 1999. He is survived by his wife of more than 53 years, Romola Reineke; his son, Mark Reineke; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kay (Reineke) Mott. Bob is fondly remembered as a loving husband and father, a dedicated engineer, a true friend, and a fine craftsman. Sandoval -- Steve J. Sandoval passed away October 20, 1999. He was a resident of Santa Fe for the past 24 years and a lifetime resident of New Mexico. Mr. Sandoval is a direct descendant of the Sandoval's that Sandoval County was named after. Steve was very proud to have served his country in the Army during WWII and was a member of the American Legion Post 1 in Santa Fe. He was a very loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and will be dearly missed by all his friends and family. Mr. Sandoval is survived by his daughters, Rachel Starr of Albuquerque, Theresa Morgan and her husband, Slade of Palmdale, CA; and his son, Manuel Sandoval of North Hills, CA; his two sisters, Leonella Gallegos and Sippy Snider, both of California; his grandchildren, Antionette, John, Phillip, Candace, Tracy, Mandi, Jamie, Erika, Renee, Manuel, Adrian, Christopher, and Brandon; 12 great-grandchildren; and many, many nieces and nephews. Simmons -- Lorraine Evelyn Simmons, 79, a resident of Belen since 1966, died Thursday, October 21, 1999. She is survived by her sons, Allan F. Simmons, Jr. and wife, Bonnie of Joshua, TX and Leonard C. Simmons and wife, Ann of Albuquerque; daughters, Carol Van Horn and husband, Luke of Albuquerque, Candy L. Simmons of Belen, Hazel Martinez and husband, Chris of Los Chavez, NM and Lorraine D. Wilson and husband, Harry of Belen; 12 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Simmons was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Allan F. Simmons, Sr. She was a longtime resident of Belen where she enjoyed raising Holstein calves and farming. Lorraine was especially proud of the first place blue ribbon award that she received for her alfalfa crop. Mrs. Simmons loved buying and selling antiques and owned Loranns Antique Shop in Belen for many years. She was once a professional singer and dancer. Smith -- Paul R. Smith, 89, an Albuquerque resident since 1960, died Wednesday, October 20, 1999. Mr. Smith is survived by his son, Paul G. Smith and wife, Jane; granddaughter, Deborah Hernandez; grandson, Eric Arnce; great-granddaughter, Celine Nicole-Irene Hernandez, all of Albuquerque. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Donna Blake, his wife, E. Irene Smith, and his cat Baby. Mr. Smith was a graduate of the University of Indiana. He retired from the US Atomic Energy Commission at Kirtland AFB as a safety systems specialist. he was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church where he was active with the Jolly Elders, served as an usher, and was superintendent of Sunday Schools. Vanderhoof -- Gladys Doreen"Deane" Vanderhoof, a youthful 77, unexpectedly passed away quietly at home, Monday afternoon, October 17, 1999. DuWayne is also survived by three step-children, Joseph Holloway and wife, Amy Wyman, Rob Holloway, and Angelique Carr and husband, Rick Carr; six grandchildren, Chad Tajada, Kyle Holloway, Austin Ginn, Brittany Woken Weidlich, Adam Woken Weidlich and Caleb Holloway, and numerous nieces and nephews. he was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Woken; siblings, Peter Wolken and Willard Wolkin. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, a resident of Albuquerque since 1946, and belonged to the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was also a Navy pilot from 1942-1946. DuWayne's hobbies were traveling and gardening. Visitation will be Monday, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Strong-Thorne's Palm Chapel, with Funeral Service Tuesday, at 10:00 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, with Rev. Randy Walquist officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Joseph Holloway, Rob Holloway, Randy Randel, Rick Carr, Mike Johnson, and Joseph Cordova. Strong-Thorne Mortuary, 1100 Coal Ave. SE., in charge of arrangements.
