Chavez -- Mr. Fidel Gabaldon Chavez, Sr., 83, of Torreon, NM, passed away at his residence on Friday, July 17, 1998. He was born May 18, 1915 in Torreon to Salvador and Senida Gabaldon Chavez. Mr. Chavez was a life long resident of Torreon, he was a member of St. Antonio Catholic Church. He was a disabled WW II veteran, he served in the United States Army and Army Air Corps in Germany and France, where he was wounded. He married Lourdes Chavez, June 18, 1938 in Torreon, NM, she survives him of the home. He is also survived by sons, Richard Chavez and wife, Socorro, Leon Chavez and wife, Imelda, Tercio Chavez and wife, Sandi, Leroy Chavez and wife, Irene, Gilbert Chavez and wife, Maxine, Fidel Chavez, Jr. and wife, Diane and George Chavez and wife, Rita; daughters, Concha Candelaria and husband, Leroy, Rosemary Chavez and Angela Valenzuela and husband, Jose; brothers, Juan and Gabriel Chavez; sister, Rafilita Vigil; twenty-four grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Natividad Chavez, brothers and sisters, Catalina, Antonia, Eloy and Ricardo. Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m., Sunday, July 19, 1998 at St. Antonio Catholic Church in Torreon, NM with Deacon Juan Lucero officiating. Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Monday at the church with Father Richard Olona officiating. Joe and Tony Chavez are serving as Ushers. Burial will follow in the Torreon Cemetery with Military Honors. Ricky Chavez, Lee Chavez, Ted Chavez, Joe Chavez, Adam Gomez, Mosies Chavez, Antonio Chavez and Nathan Chavez will be serving as pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers will be David Chavez, Sam Vigil, James Lopez, Salvado Chavez, Ismael Gallegos and Gabriel Chavez, Jr. Arrangements are entrusted to the Harris-Hanlon Mortuary in Mountainair, (847-2331).

Widener -- Earl C. Widener passed away on Friday, July 17, 1998 at his family home. Earl is survived by his loving wife of 29 years Mary C. Widener; sons, Steve Widener and family of Albuquerque, NM, Earl Widener Jr. and family of Salt Lake City, UT, James Widener and family of Lawton, OK and daughters, Juanita Widener and family of Albuquerque, NM and Rhoda Pollard and family of Oak Harbor, WA. Earl is also survived by his 19 grandchildren. A memorial Rosary will be recited Monday, July 20, 1998 at 7:00 p.m. with the memorial Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, July 21, 1998 at 10:00 a.m. both to take place at the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church 1818 Coal Pl. Sers -- Catherine Sers, 63, a resident of Melrose, LA, formerly of Albuquerque, died Monday, July 13, 1998. Survivors include her husband, Sylvester Sers; two daughters, Marie McDaniel and Sylvia LaCour of Melrose, LA; grandchildren, Dominick Metoyer, Gabriel McDaniel and Blaise LaCour; sisters, Barbara Moran of Shreveport, LA, Rose Helen Metoyer of Rogersville, TN, Agatha Severin of Chicago, IL, and JoAnn LaCour of New Orleans, LA; brothers, Joseph LaCour of Detroit, MI, James V. LaCour of Albuquerque, and Julius LaCour of New Orleans, LA. She was a retired supervisor at K-Mart in Albuquerque; was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Albuquerque for many years; a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and the Confraternity of Christian Mothers in Melrose, LA. Shields -- James Lawson Shields II, 85, of Bentonville, Arkansas, died Wednesday, July 15, 1998, at Bentonville Manor. He was born August 5, 1912 at Johnstown, Pennsylvania to James Lawson Shields Sr. and Frieda Dietz Shields. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Trueblood Shields. He attended the University of Maine 1931-1933, Purdue University 1933-1935, graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1935 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. A member of Sigma Chi fraternity, Fellow-American Geographical Society, Past President of Buxton-Hollis (Maine) Lions Club, member of the Buxton Lodge A.F. & A.M. 3115, Hollis, Maine, Civil Engineer-U.S. Army Engineers, Design Engineer-Interamerica, Inc., Venezuela, South America, Asst. Resident Engineer-Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, Chief Construction Engineer of Ships-Chicago Bridge and Iron Co., Seneca, Illinois, Plant Design Engineer-Saco-Lowell Shops, Biddeford, Maine, Partner-Gilbert and Shields, Consulting Engineers, Montreal, Canada, President, Maine Metal Finishing Co., Gorham, Maine, Civil Engineer, Navajo Tribe of Arizona, Window Rock, Arizona, Chief Engineer Limbaugh Consulting Engineers, Albuquerque, NM, President, Shields and Pace, Inc., Bentonville, Arkansas. Neis and Frank Neis of Rio Rancho; one step-daughter, Lynette Wilcox of Bentonville, AR; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a number of step-grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Friday, July 17, 1998, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m., with Capt. Roberts of the Salvation Army officiating at the Callison-Lough Funeral Home in Bentonville. Cremation will be under the direction of the Callison-Lough Funeral Service and Benton County Memorial Park Crematory. Inturnment will be in the Grandview Cemetery in Johnstown, PA. Memorials may be given to the Salvation Army of Rogers, AR.

Henrie -- Peggy F. Henrie, 88, a native of New Mexico and resident of Albuquerque since 1938, died Sunday, July 12, 1998. She is survived by her daughter, Jacquelynne Barnes of Taylorville, IL; son, James C. Henrie and wife, Joan of Corrales; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sister, Mildred Adams of Glendale, AZ; brothers, J. Wade Miles and wife, Sarah of Tucumcari, Floyd Miles of Roswell, Lloyd W. Miles and wife, Betty of Belen, and Franklin E. Miles and wife, Pat of Santa Fe; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, former Governor John E. Miles and Suzie C. Miles; and sister, Edna Green. Mrs. Henrie worked for the Bernalillo County Motor Vehicle Department from 1939-1941, the Atomic Energy Commission from 1948-1959, and Sandia National Labs from 1959-1971, retiring in June 1971. She was a Past matron of San Marcial #34 of the Eastern Star and also Past Worthy High Priestess of the Albuquerque White Shrine. Mrs. Henrie was a life member of Pythian Sisters and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Mrs. Henrie was a member of the Christian Church in Tucumcari. Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held Friday, 10:30 a.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE, with Monroe M. Miles officiating. Interment of cremains will take place at 1:00 p.m. at Santa Fe Memorial Gardens. Perez -- Ramon Perez, 67, of Fort Sumner, NM, died Tuesday, July 14, 1998 at his home following an extended illness. Ramon was born February 23, 1931 in Albuquerque to the home of Ramon Perez Sr. and the former Sarah Barrio. He was reared and attended school at Vaughn, NM, where he graduated in 1951. Following graduation he worked on the family ranch, east of Vaughn. He operated the Hubbel Ranch at Quemado, NM from 1969-1977. Ramon married Deanna L. Marcilla on August 15, 1970. Ramon and Deanna returned to the family ranch, east of Vaughn from 1977 until 1988, when they moved to Fort Sumner. Ramon was a member of the NM Wool Growers Assn., NM Cattle Growers, Farm Bureau, and a 4-H leader. He was a lifelong Catholic and a member of St. Anthony Parish in Fort Sumner. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Carmen Perez Alonzo in 1993. Survivors include his wife, Deanna Perez of the home in Fort Sumner; two daughters, Nicole Perez of the family home and Laree Perez Losey of Corrales, NM; a son, Frank Perez of Albuquerque. Also surviving are two sisters, Alice Perez of Vaughn, NM and Anna Osle of Albuquerque; one brother, Albert Perez and his wife, Corrine of Vaughn, NM; a brother-in-law, Manolo Alonzo of Vaughn, NM. Other survivors include several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Thursday, 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., at the Chavez Funeral Home. Rosary services will be held at 7:00 p.m., Friday, July 17, 1998 from St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Sumner, NM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, July 18, 1998, from the church with Father Anthony Bolman, Celebrant of the Mass. Burial will follow at Fort Sumner Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Jack Achen, Lewis Hisel, Charlie Overton, Jim Koontz, James West, Paul Horney, Nick Cortese, Dick Byrd, Ty Earl Powell, Alex Gazolas, Michael Harriet, Jim Williams, R.J. Cook, and Jerry Gonzales. Honorary bearers will include Ralph Lund, Walter Overton, Allen Doak, Buddy Cortese, Cecil West, Red West, Johnny Muno, Louie Erramuspe, Roc Mark, J.O. Achen, Knox Cortese, Jack Lucero, John Josser, Henry Saiz, Bob Ratliff, and all his many friends and neighbors. A memorial fund has been established at Citizens Bank, P.O. Roberts -- On July 15, 1998, Richard James Roberts of 1625 Fornax Rd., Rio Rancho, NM, went on to be with the Lord. His wife, Ceridwen; his three sons, Rick, Tom and Keith; and his four grandchildren, Ricky, Renee, Steven and Timothy survive him, as well as nephews, Daniel and Michael; and his niece, Patricia, from Vermont. Born and raised in Poultney, Vermont, Dick joined the Marine Corps at age 17, where he served in the South, Central, Pacific area for three years. His unit received several citations for bravery during the battle of Munda and the New Georgia group campaign. After service, he graduated from Castleton State Teachers College in Vermont and Colombia University in New York City. Dick was a proud member of American Legion Post 118. He taught emotionally disturbed children at the Boy's Home in New York. He wrote poetry, short stories and sang for the American Theater Wing in New York. He donated his time and talent to charity. He moved to New Mexico in 1978, became an avid golfer and Lobo fan. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 53 years; by his three sons who loved him dearly; and his four grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe on Friday, July 17, 1998 at 10:00 a.m. Burial arrangements by Direct Services, 343-8008, 4501 4th NW.
