SWEETKIND -- Irene Sullivan Sweetkind, 67, of Albuquerque, NM, died Friday, May 14, 2004 after a year-long battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband, David Sweetkind; son, Donald Sweetkind, his wife, Karen Smith, and their daughter, Reid Sweetkind of Golden, CO; daughter, Julie Sweetkind-Singer and her husband, Joshua Sweetkind-Singer of Mountain View, CA; and daughter, Beth Brockway, her husband, James Brockway, and their daughters, Melissa Brockway and Maggie Brockway of Ames, IA. She is also survived by three brothers, David Sullivan, Jr., Donal Sullivan and Kevin Sullivan. Irene, the daughter of Irene and David J. Sullivan, Sr., was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut on August 25, 1936. Irene and David retired to Cochiti Lake, New Mexico in 1997 and moved to Albuquerque in 2003. She will be remembered for her love of history, her devotion to her family, and for being an unending source of strength and inspiration to those who knew her. A remembrance service will be held on May 28, 2004 in Albuquerque. SYLER -- Patton "Pat" N. Syler, 98, died Wednesday, May 19, 2004. Pat was born in Stephenville, TX, on Wednesday, November 29, 1905. He was the son and first child of William and Maggie Syler. Pat is survived by his son, Ron Syler and his wife, Nelmah Syler of Albuquerque, NM; granddaughter, Ginger Syler and husband, Kasey Hellmoldt, and great grandson, David Syler, all of Belen, NM; and nephews, Robert and Wayne Baker of Phoenix, AZ. He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Bessie; his parents; his grandson, Grant Syler and his only sibling, Edna Baker. Pat was the son of a farmer and cattle rancher with homes in Texas, Oklahoma and Arizona. While growing up, he helped work the family places, participating in cattle drives when the family moved by covered wagon within Texas. The family moved to a farm in Phoenix, AZ by train, when Pat was eleven. He remained a resident of Arizona from then until January, 2001 when he moved to Albuquerque to be close to his immediate family. In Phoenix he graduated from Isaac Grade School, Phoenix Union High School and Phoenix College. He also attended the University of Arizona studying civil engineering. The depression ended his college days and he started working for the Arizona Highway Department. Pat continued to study on his own and became a registered Civil Engineer, specializing in highway construction. His career included working for the State of Arizona (District Engineer), Maricopa County (Assistant County Engineer), Coconino County (County Engineer) and private highway contractors. He was president of the Arizona Association of County Engineers for two terms and has been listed in the Who's Who of Arizona. Due to the nature of his work, he and his family lived in towns and highway camps all over Arizona until settling in Flagstaff in 1958. He remained there until 2000, when he moved to a retirement home in Cottonwood, AZ, after Bessie's death. In Flagstaff, he and his wife were members of Shepherd of the Hill Lutheran Church where he was the church Financial Secretary for 25 years. They had many friends with whom they maintained a very active social life. Pat was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Elks Club in Flagstaff. After retiring in 1972, he and Bessie traveled extensively in the states and abroad. Pat celebrated his 80th birthday in Bangkok, Thailand with Bessie, Ron and Nelmah. Pat especially enjoyed his 27-foot cabin cruiser and the many fishing trips to Glen Canyon with his friends and family. Services will be held Saturday, May 22, 2004, 11:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE with Reverend Dewey Johnson, officiating. WEATHERMAN -- Mrs. Dorothy Mae Hiler Weatherman, age 78, wife of Mr. Leo E. Weatherman, of Pinnacle, N.C. went to be with the Lord, Thursday morning, May 20, 2004 at her home. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Leo E. Weatherman, of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, David Weatherman and wife, Pat, Albuquerque; one daughter and son-in-law, Diana Ernest and husband, Daniel, Pilot Mountain, NC. BARELA -- Mary Stella Barela, 69, a resident of Albuquerque, died Monday, May 17, 2004. She is survived by her devoted husband of 46 years, Eloy Barela of Albuquerque; son, David Barela of Dallas, TX; daughters, Bernadette Barela-Brown and husband, Richard of Denver, CO, and Diane Barela Zaiter and husband, Larry of Attleboro, MA; son, Brian Barela and wife, Robin of Forney, TX; ten grandchildren, Andrea, Patrick, Paul, Victoria, Stephanie, Nicholas, Lauren, Drew, Lance and Curtis; sister, Margaret Chavez and husband, Henry of Albuquerque; brother, Bennie Chavez and wife, Fran of Dumfries, VA; brother, Robert Chavez of Albuquerque; sister-in-law, Evelyn Chavez of Scottsdale, AZ; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Elvira Chavez; and two brothers, Paul and Candido Chavez. The Lord has called our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother home and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She was a longtime parishioner at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church. MAESTAS -- Viola T. Maestas, age 79, a resident of Santa Fe passed away on Tuesday, May 18, 2004, following an illness she battled for the past six years. She was born in Santa Fe on May 11, 1925, to Eduardo and Eduivigen Tafoya. She was a 1944 graduate of Santa Fe High School. On February 9, 1952, she married Joe E. Maestas in Bernalillo. She worked as an administrative secretary for the NM Department of Labor; Director Bureau of Elections of Santa Fe County; Secretary State Education Department; and as a clerk for the U.S. Commerce Department in Washington, D.C. She was a member of the National Association of Professional Women, Club Real, Fiesta Council, and Santa Fe Women's Health Committee. Preceding her in death were her parents; brothers and sisters, Frances Clark, Rudolph, Robert, Eloy, and Edward Tafoya and Angelina Berrio. Surviving her are her husband, Joe E. Maestas; daughter, Roberta L. Espinosa of San Diego, CA; grandsons, Steve Espinosa of Phoenix, AZ and Christopher Espinosa of Portland, OR; daughter, Anita Kidwell of Santa Fe; grandson, Nathaniel Gutierrez of Santa Fe; granddaughter, Taylor Kidwell of Albuquerque; son, David Maestas and daughter-in-law, Dawn Maestas of Richland, WA; son, Joseph Maestas and granddaughter, Gabriella Maestas both of Albuquerque; son, Ted Maestas and daughter-in-law, Annette Schandel; granddaughter, Isabelle Maestas all of Denver, CO. She is also survived by many other relatives and friends. A rosary will be recited Thursday, May 20, 2004, 2:00 p.m. at Berardinelli Family Chapel. Please call for mass information. PEREA -- Corrine O. Perea, 61, a resident of Albuquerque, died Monday, May 17, 2004. She is survived by her husband, Fermin; sons, James and Steve; daughters-in-law, Jennifer and Joanne; grandchildren, Kayla, Stephen, Sabrina, Brandon and Dylan; mother, Sylvia; brothers, Al and Fred and best friends, Mary & Joe Jaramillo, Nancy Salazar, Manuel & Josephine Lucero and David Montano; godsons Adrian Jaramillo and Shawn Lopez. She was a loving wife of 38 years who loved her children and grandchildren. She was known to her family and friends as Honey Bunny. Corrine worked for the Department of Labor for 30 years. She loved going to Laughlin, NV. She was an incredibly giving person who always thought about others feelings, well before her own. She absolutely loved smiling and laughing and lived life with no regrets. Strong in her faith in Jesus Christ, she loved life. TAFOYA -- Sophie S. Tafoya, 75, went home to be with the Lord on May 16, 2004 with her loving family by her side. She was born on May 17, 1928 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Sophie was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church, member of the Altar and Rosary Society and a CCD Instructor. She was also a retired cafeteria manager with A.P.S. She is preceded in death by her husband Mark Tafoya and her sisters, Becky Guelfi and Cora Martinez. Sophie is survived by her son Mark A. Tafoya Jr.; daughter, Marilyn Tafoya and David Padilla; her grandson, Steven Tafoya and wife Kathryn and her great grandchildren, Angel Tafoya, Johnathan Tafoya and Stevana Tafoya; brother, Roland Saavedra and wife Annie; sisters, Mollie Sedillo and husband Vincent, Oralia "Lala" Davis and husband Bill and Ronnie Studerus and husband Ted; brother-in-law, Alfi Guelfi; special Goddaughter, Patricia Grado. Sophie will be deeply missed by her loving family. A Memorial rosary will be recited on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. at St. Anne Catholic Church. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. also at St. Anne Catholic Church. The family will have a private inurnment which will take place at later date. LUNDGREN -- Dr. David Lundgren, 72, has gone fishing with Jesus. He was a very loving father and grandfather, who endlessly gave words of encouragement and support in times of need. He moved to Albuquerque in 1964 to pursue a career that he loved as a Microbiologist specializing in inhalation toxicology at ITRI where he worked for over 30 years. He is survived by his children Kent, Courtney, Wendy, Robyn and Mike. Grandchildren Faith, Cody, Lainie, Donovan, Mindie, David, Megan, A.J., E.J., and Jolene, and five great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Edrie Harrington, her husband Tom, brother Doug and his wife Laurie, and best friend Eva. He was preceded in death by his wife Helen. Cremation has taken place and Memorial Services were held Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. N.E. Albuquerque, NM, with Chaplain Fabian Gagon officiating. ROBENS-NING -- Christine Robens-Ning, 54, of Albuquerque passed away Sunday, May 16, 2004, after a nine month battle with cancer. She was born on Tuesday, May 16, 1950. She is survived by her husband of 19 years, Jimmy Ning; daughters, Jennifer Vallejos and husband, Alex Jr. and Kari Howell and husband, Zack; stepchildren, Natasha and Jason Ning; mother, Evelyn Carlson; siblings, Bill Robens and wife, Kathryn, Bob Robens, Kathy Robens and husband, David Goldman, and Susan Brannon; in-laws, Mary Chang, Vickie Tusiri, Judy Parnell, David Ning and partner, Elaine Lehmann, Mike Ning and partner, Sherry Jones and Jack and wife, Judie Ning; grandsons, Mateo and Adelicio Vallejos; her close family included, Francis and Susie Chang, Peter and Isabel Chang, many other nieces, nephews and cousins as well as her good friends, Frank and Kathleen Marchi. She was preceded in death by her father, William Robens and stepfather, Jim Carlson. Chris was the Vice President of Finance & Operations at the Manuel Lujan Agencies, where she had been employed for over 26 years. Chris was a charter member of the UNM Leadership Team for the Popejoy Hall Ovation Series. She loved to travel and spend time with her family, especially her grandsons. A funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. at Queen of Heaven. Interment will take place at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul NE.
