BARBER -- Edward Robert Barber, 82, a resident of Albuquerque, died Sunday, May 16, 2004. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Rosemary M. Barber; sons, Mark Barber and wife, Anna of DeForest, WI, Matthew Barber and wife, Bettye of Hull, MA, Gregory Barber and wife, Jane of Scottsdale, AZ, Steven Barber of Austin,TX and Robert Barber and his wife, Tammy of Many, LA; daughters, Rosemary Barrett and husband, John of Albuquerque, Michelle Campion and her husband, Bill; grandchildren, Matthew II and Emma Barber of Hull, MA, Christopher and Daniel Barber of Scottsdale, AZ, Chelsea, Robert II and Jamie Barber, and her husband James King all of Many, LA, Jason, Michelle, and April Barrett of Albuquerque, and Will II, Michael, Sarah and Jacob Campion of Albuquerque; two great grandchildren (on the way). In 1944 he served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the 445th Bomb Group-700th Squadron, and was an active member in the local 8tth Air Force Historical Society. In 1948 Edward graduated from La Salle College, Philadelphia PA. In 1956 he took a job at Sandia National Laboratories, and retired after 30years of service. Mr. Barber was very active in all aspects of his children's lives especially when it came to sports. He was a coach and former president of the Board of Directors of Altamonte Little League; former president of the 8th Air Force Historical Society of New Mexico, and a member of Our Lady Of the Annunciation Catholic Church. Memorial Services will be held on Friday, May 21, 2004 at 8:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Annunciation Catholic Church on Claremont and Vermont St., Albuquerque, NM. BARELA -- Mary Stella Barela, 69, a resident of Albuquerque, died Monday, May 17, 2004. She is survived by her devoted husband of 46 years, Eloy Barela of Albuquerque; son, David Barela of Dallas, TX; daughters, Bernadette Barela-Brown and husband, Richard of Denver, CO, and Diane Barela Zaiter and husband, Larry of Attleboro, MA; son, Brian Barela and wife, Robin of Forney, TX; ten grandchildren, Andrea, Patrick, Paul, Victoria, Stephanie, Nicholas, Lauren, Drew, Lance and Curtis; sister, Margaret Chavez and husband, Henry of Albuquerque; brother, Bennie Chavez and wife, Fran of Dumfries, VA; brother, Robert Chavez of Albuquerque; sister-in-law, Evelyn Chavez of Scottsdale, AZ; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Elvira Chavez; and two brothers, Paul and Candido Chavez. CASTLE -- Albert Castle, 67, a resident of Albuquerque, died Sunday, May 16, 2004. He is survived by wife of 44 years, Sarah Castle of Albuquerque; sons, Marlon Castle, of Santa Fe, NM, and Gerald Castle who is stationed in San Diego, CA; granddaughter, Cheney Perry-Hill of Albuquerque; father, Albert Castle Sr. of Gallup, NM; sisters, Betty Briggs and Carrie Cotledge of Los Angeles, CA, and Laura Myers of Needles, CA. He was preceded in death by his daughter Alba Castle in 1999 and his mother Carrie Castle. Albert retired from the postal service as Post Master in 1991 after serving in the Armed Forces. CLARK -- Argie Lee Clark, a resident of Albuquerque for almost forty years, died on Sunday, May 16, 2004, in Austin, Texas. She was 79. Mrs. Clark was born in Lakeview, Texas, in 1924. The oldest girl in a family of eight children, she was a good student who loved to read. When she was 18 she married a handsome young Army officer, Orvill C. Clark. Together they lived in more than a half dozen U.S. states and in Germany. With their children Deborah and Stephen, they settled in Albuquerque in the 1960's. Mrs. Clark was a medical transcriptionist and an accomplished player of duplicated bridge, earning the designation of Life Master. She is best remembered as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Mrs. Clark was preceded in death by her husband, Orvill C. Clark and her daughter, Debroah S. Rosenberg. Survivors include her son, Stephen O. Clark and his wife, Autumn; son-in-law, Arthur M. Rosenberg, MD; grandchildren, Rachel Clark, Robert Clark, Jessica D'Arcy, Kathryn Gonzales and Laura Rosenberg; several great-grandchildren; several siblings; and many friends. EGAN -- Ann Egan, 78, a resident of Rio Rancho for the past 30 years passed away on Tuesday, May 18, 2004. Ann was born August 2, 1925 the daughter of Joseph and Angela Manzi DeMaio in Brooklyn, New York. She had been an Administrative Assistant in the banking and insurance industries before she retired. She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. Ann lead a colorful and varied life. She loved life and had a great sense of humor! As an avid dancer and music lover, Ann belonged to the Rio Ramblers square dancing group. She was an avid sports fan who loved following the UNM Lobos. Ann was a score keeper for Little League and she also enjoyed bowling. Ann was instrumental in establishing a recycling program in Rio Rancho. To that end, she was active with KEEP RIO RANCHO BEAUTIFUL, worked at the Public Library and was a hospital volunteer for five years at what is now West Mesa Medical Center. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. Ann was preceded in death by one sister, Julie Devins. She is survived by her husband Thomas of Rio Rancho; four children, Donna Wood and husband Craig of Albuquerque; Kathleen Villarose and husband John of Orlando, FL; Mary Ellen Franklin and husband Dan of Bastrop, TX; Thomas J. Egan and wife Karen of Westin, FL; six grandchildren, Ann-Marie Villarose and Deanna Villarose, Keri and Kristin Franklin, Tyler, Amber Wood, Nikkie Barnett and Chelsie Middleton; one sister, Theresa Johnston and husband, Donald; brother-in-law, Edward Devins; sister-in-law Betty Larson; cousins, Dr. Donald Capra, George DeMaio, Lillian and Julia Gulotta, and Vincent Riehl and family; and nieces and nephews. GRISWOLD -- Gilbert Ripley Griswold, 92, a resident of Albuquerque, NM, died late Saturday, May 15, 2004 in La Vida Llena Health Care, in Albuquerque. Mr. Griswold is survived by his daughters, Miriam Schroeder of San Diego, CA, Martha Griswold of Berkley, CA, and Annette Griswold of Greenbush, WI; four grandchildren; one great grandson. He was preceded in death by his wife of over 40 years, Laura Fast Griswold. Mr. Griswold was born in Greenport, NY on October 3, 1911, the middle child of Clyde and Grace Griswold. He moved to Raton, NM at the age of ten and had been a New Mexico resident ever since. G.R. Griswold received two Bachelors of Science degrees from NM Tech in the fields of mining engineering and metalurgy. During the years of 1933-39, Mr. Griswold was a survey party chief and topographic engineer with the US Geological Survey, mapping rivers, dam sites, and reservoirs in New Mexico, Utah, Idaho and Montana, as well as an assayer. He went on to the University of Utah and earned a Master of Science in metalurgy. During World War II, he served in the Army specializing in ordinance, and was discharged a full colonel in the US Army Reserve. Mr. Griswold was president of Chapman, Wood and Griswold, consulting mining engineers and geologists, with offices in Albuquerque, Australia, and Canada. Even though placer gold was his favorite ore, Mr. Griswold was involved in uranium mining since its inception and was internationally consulted on the subject. He was appointed a member of the General Technical Advisory Commission on US Coal Research. He belonged to many mining organizations and a Rotarian. Services will be held Thursday, May 20, 2004, 1:00 p.m. at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul NE. MAESTAS -- Viola T. Maestas, age 79, a resident of Santa Fe passed away on Tuesday, May 18, 2004, following an illness she battled for the past six years. She was born in Santa Fe on May 11, 1925, to Eduardo and Eduivigen Tafoya. She was a 1944 graduate of Santa Fe High School. On February 9, 1952, she married Joe E. Maestas in Bernalillo. She worked as an administrative secretary for the NM Department of Labor; Director Bureau of Elections of Santa Fe County; Secretary State Education Department; and as a clerk for the U.S. Commerce Department in Washington, D.C. She was a member of the National Association of Professional Women, Club Real, Fiesta Council, and Santa Fe Women's Health Committee. Preceding her in death were her parents; brothers and sisters, Frances Clark, Rudolph, Robert, Eloy, and Edward Tafoya and Angelina Berrio. Surviving her are her husband, Joe E. Maestas; daughter, Roberta L. Espinosa of San Diego, CA; grandsons, Steve Espinosa of Phoenix, AZ and Christopher Espinosa of Portland, OR; daughter, Anita Kidwell of Santa Fe; grandson, Nathaniel Gutierrez of Santa Fe; granddaughter, Taylor Kidwell of Albuquerque; son, David Maestas and daughter-in-law, Dawn Maestas of Richland, WA; son, Joseph Maestas and granddaughter, Gabriella Maestas both of Albuquerque; son, Ted Maestas and daughter-in-law, Annette Schandel; granddaughter, Isabelle Maestas all of Denver, CO. NGUYEN -- Thin Duc Nguyen, 63, a resident of Rio Rancho, passed away on Monday, May 17, 2004. Thin was born October 14, 1940 the son of Vy Duc and Van Thi Nguyen in Vietnam. He served in the Vietnamese Army and after coming to the United States, he lived in Bartlesville, Oklahoma before coming to New Mexico. He had been a programmer in computer manufacturing. Trin is survived by his wife, Van Nguyen of Rio Rancho; eight children, Steve Nguyen, Joe Nguyen, Thuy Nguyen, Trinh Guenther, Kelly Schatz, Danny Nguyen, Michael Nguyen, and Dong Truong; and fourteen grandchildren. PEREA -- Corrine O. Perea, 61, a resident of Albuquerque, died Monday, May 17, 2004. ROMERO -- Cajetan "Cajey" Romero, 50, a resident of Albuquerque since 1963, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, May 18, 2004. He is survived by his wife, Benerita "Bennie" Romero; sons, Cajey Romero, Jr., Joaquin Romero, Manuel Romero and Jason Rodarte; daughter, Dalena Romero-Chavez and husband, Leo; mother, Elvera "Vera" Romero; brothers Ed Romero and wife, Liz, Joe Romero and wife, Emma and Manuel Romero and wife, Benita, all of Albuquerque; sisters Barbara Abeyta and husband, Richard, of St. Louis, MO and Loretta Romero-Vigil and husband, Rudy, of Albuquerque and three grandchildren, Angelo, Raissa and Ariana. Cajey grew up on a cattle ranch in Colorado, working all the details of the ranch. He had owned and operated Romero Automotive. Cajey later became Maintenance Director for Gardunos of Mexico. He was a Christian man who attended Calvary Chapel for the past eight years. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and Harley rider. Cajey was a caring, kindhearted man who devoted himself to the family he loved. Services will be held Friday, May 21, 2004, 10:00 a.m., at Calvary Chapel with Pastor Bob Church officiating. STAMPER -- Verne H. Stamper III, a resident of Albuquerque since the 1950s died Tuesday, May 18, 2004, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. TAFOYA -- Sophie S. Tafoya, 75, went home to be with the Lord on May 16, 2004 with her loving family by her side. She was born on May 17, 1928 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Sophie was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church, member of the Altar and Rosary Society and a CCD Instructor. She was also a retired cafeteria manager with A.P.S. She is preceded in death by her husband Mark Tafoya and her sisters, Becky Guelfi and Cora Martinez. Sophie is survived by her son Mark A. Tafoya Jr.; daughter, Marilyn Tafoya and David Padilla; her grandson, Steven Tafoya and wife Kathryn and her great grandchildren, Angel Tafoya, Johnathan Tafoya and Stevana Tafoya; brother, Roland Saavedra and wife Annie; sisters, Mollie Sedillo and husband Vincent, Oralia "Lala" Davis and husband Bill and Ronnie Studerus and husband Ted; brother-in-law, Alfi Guelfi; special Goddaughter, Patricia Grado. VAUGHN -- Adele Vaughn attended the University of Massachusetts, graduating from the Stockbridge School of Agriculture. She worked for two years with the Federal Housing Authority on the landscape design of Army, Navy, and other housing projects. She later became a consultant for the Greenbrier Farms of Norfolk, Virginia. Mrs. Vaughn is survived by her sons Carder, Brewster, Roger, wife Beverly and grandchildren Lauren, Holly, Amy and Dane. Mrs. Vaughn moved to Albuquerque from Ft. Lauderdale, FL, where she served on the Mayor's Advisory Board in Parks and Recreation. In this capacity she was responsible for programs concerning the influx of college students who came there during Spring Vacation. She was also a member of the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross and Executive Chairman of Junior Red Cross. Mrs. Vaughn served as Vice President of the Bernalillo County P.T.A. for two years. She served as Board Chairman for three years for the Albuquerque Youth Council, an organization sponsored by the City and Public Schools. She has served on many committees concerned with the welfare of children including the Los Lunas School in Los Lunas, NM. During two summers she worked under a federal grant at the Girls Welfare Home in Albuquerque, directing a tutoring program for youth in confinement. Mrs. Vaughn has been actively concerned with good government, serving and working on the charter Revision for Democratic Party. Mrs. Vaughn was a substitute teacher of eight years standing in secondary math in Albuquerque Public Schools. She also is President of Alfa Enterprises Inc., a business which she took over on the death of her husband. Mrs. Vaughn is well known and liked for her dedication to community improvement and a more meaningful life of all children. She is a member of the St. Charles Borromeo Church, and is a member of St. Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary. She has served on the National Committee for the support of Public Schools from 1965 to 1968. For her work in this area she received an award from Judge Edwin Swope, presiding Juvenile Judge for her contributions to the lives of children in the City of Albuquerque. A Rosary will be held at Palm Chapel of Strong-Thorne Mortuary on Thursday, May 20, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be celebrated on Friday, May 21, 2004 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Church.
