RHODES -- Gene Rhys Rhodes, 52, of Albuquerque, NM and Las Cruces, NM died on August 1, 2009. Gene was born in Albuquerque, NM on August 10, 1956. He graduated from Highland High School and received a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of New Mexico. Gene was well known for his brilliant mechanical mind and his gift for being able to fix almost anything. He had a particular passion for Alfa Romeo automobiles. He owned many Alfas during his life and spent countless hours restoring them to the point that he was an expert in all aspects of this brand of automobile. Gene also enjoyed camping and had an especially fond appreciation of the Washington and Oregon coast areas of the U.S. Gene loved animals, particularly dogs and had recently adopted a Pomeranian Chihuahua named Chica who became his constant companion. Gene owned his own printing service and supply business for many years in Albuquerque. Over the past few years Gene lived in Las Cruces and worked with his brother at a billiards store. Gene is survived by his mother, Margaret; brother, Kerry; sister, Cheri; and countless other family and friends. He will be extraordinarily missed. There will be a gathering of friends on Friday, August 7, 2009, at 9:00 a.m. in Sister Cities Park located at the intersection of Harper and McKinney, NE, in Albuquerque.

RANKIN -- Clyde H. Rankin, Sr. Clyde, a resident of Albuqueque since February 2008, died at home on July 4, 2009. He has one surviving sister Linda Wright and husband Kevin Sr., living in Washington, they have three children Kevin Jr., wife Rachelle, Latisha Karl and husband Larry, Ellene McClay and husband Kevin, and Terry Carrasco and husband Matt, and seven grandchildren Isabella, Gideon, Andy, Nickolas, Sarah, Sasha and Jack. Clyde is survived by three sons Clyde H. Rankin Jr., wife Mayeth of Michigan, Jack L. Rankin of Indiana, Ronald E. Rankin, wife Carol of Indiana, five grandchildren Justin, Cassie, Rowdy, Amber, and Clay, and one great-grandchild Xander. Also survived by two cousins Paul Criswell and family of Indiana, and Bob Criswell and family of Texas. Clyde was born on September 5, 1937 in Jamestown, TN to Ina and Don Rankin. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in Dayton, OH on October 5, 1954. He served in the Korean War and was awarded the Purple Heart before being honorably discharged on October 3, 1958 as Airman Second Class. He moved to Muncie, IN and after a few different job paths, in June 1965, he joined the Teamsters and a love of driving an 18 wheeler was born that lasted for over 20 years, and he was made an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Teamsters. For a few years he was the proud owner of Country J's Restaurant. In Muncie, he loved to serve his "down home" meals at a fair price. His nickname was "Tennessee". His health started failing him and he continued to live in Muncie until February 2008, when he moved to Albuquerque to live with his niece Sarah and her husband Tim Price so she could care for him, and he could be closer to his sister Nerine Hensley who passed January 3, 2009. Nerine lived with and was being cared for by her daughter Donna Entezari, her husband Hossein and daughters Shirine and Mariam all of Albuquerque and daughter Stephany McKinney, husband Ryan and daughters Misty Allred with her daughters Valerie, Meagan, and Macy Wesley, all of Indiana. Sarah Price and family and Donna Entezari and family would like to personally thank the Albuquerque VA Medical Center's wound clinic, as well as the VA's Home Based Primary Care Team, and the associates of Ambercare Hospice that took such wonderful and compassionate care of our uncle in his last days. It was a comfort knowing that he had the best care possible in those most difficult days. Services will be at Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Santa Fe, NM on July 29, 2009 at 2:00 p.m.

PURCELL -- Barbara Ann Purcell, age 74, a resident of Albuquerque, NM, passed away on Saturday, June 20, 2009. She was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church, rosary society and the peace and justice center. Barbara's hobbies were genealogy and book repair, she especially loved doll repair and collecting. Barbara taught in Tulsa and Kansas City Schools before moving to New Mexico. She retired from the Belen Schools after 20 years of outstanding service. She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Mildred Hart McKinney; and nephew, Eric Hensley. Barbara is survived by her loving husband of 39 years, James Purcell; sister, Roberta Hensley and husband, Zane; niece, Tina Nunez and husband, Joe and their children, Zane and Theresa; and nephew, Chris Hensley. A viewing will be held at Romero Funeral Home Chapel, on Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 5:30 p.m. with a Rosary to be recited at 6:00 p.m. A final visitation will be held at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 11401 Indian School NE, Albuquerque, NM on Thursday, June 25, 2009 at 8:30 a.m. with a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Belen Memorial Garden. HART -- Samuel L. Hart, beloved husband, father, and brother, passed away Wednesday, June 3, 2009. He was born in Friona, Texas on August 26, 1956. He was a high school graduate from McKinney, Texas and obtained his bachelors degree from Eastern New Mexico University. Sam resided in Rio Rancho, New Mexico with his wife, Donna, and their four children, Christopher, Michael, Robert and Chelsea. He served as Maintenance Director - Facilities Department of Rio Rancho Public Schools. Sam was a devoted family man who was loved by all who knew him. He will be sorely missed. Sam is survived by his wife, Donna; son Christopher and his wife Nicole and granddaughter Sophia; sons Michael and Robert, and daughter Chelsea; mother, Joyce Hart; brothers, Bob Hart, Jr., Bill Hart, David Hart, and Jason Hart, and sisters, Linda Hart Catterton and Denise Hart Smith. TORRES -- Gilbert Torres, 70, passed away Friday, April 10, 2009 after a six month battle with cancer. Gilbert currently resided at his home in the Manzano Mountains after retiring and moving from his long time home in Albuquerque, NM. He is survived by his wife of almost 53 years, Ursula Lopez Torres; four daughters Rosemary Marquez, Joyce Valdez and husband Rick, Karen Baca and husband Adam, Michelle Roybal and husband Joseph. He also had nine grandchildren including Beverly Marquez and husband David, Merlinda Martinez and husband Steve, Victor Marquez, Ivan Marquez and wife Megan, Joseph Baca and wife Sharlynn, Renee Baca, Christine Baca, Matthew Roybal and Amanda Roybal. Gilbert also had seven great-grandchildren and one on the way. He was diagnosed with cancer in the fall of 2008 immediately after the purchase of their new home following the Ojo Peak Forest Fire which claimed their retirement home of 18 years. He fought his battle with dignity and grace looking forward to quality of life rather than opting for chemotherapy. He enjoyed playing guitar and singing with family and friends, working on his garden and roaming the mountain-side on his John Deere Gator. He will be missed by all who knew him. Services are being handled by Harris-Hanlon Mortuary in Mountainair, NM. Rosary will be recited on Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Manzano, NM. Funeral Mass is on Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with the interment immediately following the Mass, also in Manzano. Pallbearers are Adam Baca, Joseph Roybal, Rick Valdez, Orlando Lopez, Bobo (Ursher) Crapse, James Lopez, Michael Walters, Gene McKinney, and Gilbert Lovato. The family will receive guests at a reception following the Burial at the Parish Hall in Manzano.

MCKINNEY -- The Rev. Charles D. McKinney of Albuquerque, died Thursday, February 19, 2009. He had been in failing health several years. He was born in Huntington, WV, on June 4, 1922. He married Eleanor Baughey in November, 1941. They celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary last year. Rev. McKinney was an evangelist and pastor. He designed and built churches and parsonages throughout the United States. At the age of 80, he retired and returned to Albuquerque, where four generations now live. Rev. McKinney is survived by his wife, Eleanor; his daughter, Patricia Canfield and husband Charles A.; two sons, David Michael and Gregory Alan McKinney; granddaughters, Tami O'Bryan and husband Dan, Traci Siler and husband Scott; and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, February 25, at 2:00 p.m. at Sagebrush Community Church, 6440 Coors Blvd. NW, (505) 922-9200.
