DIXON -- Fred M. Dixon, 89, passed away peacefully in his Idaho home on June 5, 2009, of natural causes. A Memorial Service to celebrate Fred's life will be conducted in Santa Fe, New Mexico, at Calvary Santa Fe, 2520 Camino Entrada, Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. Fred was born March 12, 1920 in Austin, Colorado to Lillian and Guy Hover Dixon. He married his high school sweetheart, Faye Meacham in 1938 and worked as a roofer in Napa, California. Fred and Faye had two sons: Richard of Duluth, Minnesota and Dan of Greenleaf, Idaho. In 1944, James W. Young offered Fred the opportunity to manage his Apple Ranch at Rancho de la Canada, near Pena Blanca, New Mexico. Fred accepted the offer and moved his young family to the Apple Ranch. When ownership of the ranch was transferred to the University of New Mexico, Fred and Faye continued management and built the thriving apple business known throughout New Mexico as DIXON'S APPLES. Fred patented 3 new varieties of apples: "Champagne", "Sparkling Burgundy", and "Rum & Raisin". In 1985, the love of Fred's life, Faye, went home to be with her Lord. In 1986, Granddaughter, Becky Dixon, from Duluth, Minn. moved to the ranch to assist her Grandfather and learn the apple business. Eventually Becky and husband Jim Mullane assumed ownership of DIXON'S APPLES and under Fred's mentoring, the business thrived. As a testimony to Fred's legacy, the business continues to flourish under the DIXON'S APPLES name. Health issues necessitated a move to lower altitudes and Fred established a second home in Greenleaf, Idaho in 1998 near his son Dan and family. Fred is survived by two sons and daughter-in-laws; four grandchildren and spouses; ten great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and one sister in law. Special appreciation is extended to Guardian Hospice for the excellent care and assistance they gave Fred and his Idaho family during his last months of life. The family suggests memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, to All Faiths Receiving Home, 1709 Moon Street, NE Albuquerque, New Mexico 87112-3973
