GUTIERREZ, DONALD KENNETH died October 29, 2013 peacefully at Gentiva Hospice with family at his side. He was born March 10, 1932 in Oakland, CA to Alicia Ruiz Chamorro and J. Salvador Gutierrez. He lived most of his young life in San Francisco and the Bay Area, where he attended Sequoia High School in Redwood City, maintained an excellent academic record and also became a star player on the varsity basketball team. For much of his impressively productive life, Don always found hoops close by to practice his signature shots. Don went on to receive his B.A. in English Literature and M.L.S. at UC Berkeley in 1958. While there he met and soon married the beautiful and immensely gifted artist Marlene Zander. Together they would travel from the west coast to the east coast where Don would apply his librarian skills at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Library and later with Grosset and Dunlap publishers. They would return to California where Don earned his PhD from UCLA in 1964 and soon accepted a teaching position at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. The family then moved to New Mexico where Don taught English Literature at Western New Mexico University for several more years before retiring to Albuquerque. Despite the demanding teaching loads which he took very seriously, Don also persevered in his creative drives, sustaining a brilliant career as a poet, literary critic, and essayist. In more recent years, he also emerged as a deeply committed champion of humanitarian causes and social justice, all evidenced in his vast contributions in books, essays, articles, book reviews, papers translated into Spanish, lectures, public readings, and participation in many public protests. Don ultimately wrote seven (7) books and over fifty (50) essays which were published. His most recent book, a collection of essays on social justice entitled "Feeling the Unthinkable" published by Amador Books, is a finalist in the New Mexico-Arizona 2013 Book Awards. Don was predeceased in August, 2011 by the love of his life, Marlene. He is survived by his two sons, of whom he was deeply proud, Hector and wife Kathryn of Alta Loma, CA and Trajan of Albuquerque, NM, granddaughters Nastassja and Ashley and husband Esteban, great granddaughter Zoe Marlene, sister Lolita Gutierrez Brockington of Chapel Hill, NC, and brother Dale Gutierrez of San Francisco, CA. A memorial service will be held on Saturday Nov. 16, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at UNM Alumni Chapel. Don was an inspiring and compassionate man who was loved and will be sorely missed by his family and his many friends and colleagues, but his rich legacy will endure for many years to come!

HETES, HELGA E. When times grow dark and the light grows dim, my heart calls out to you. As the old song goes "Don't it make my brown eyes blue." Each time thoughts long for bygone times, reminders of how much I miss you gray eyes. My Kolibri, rest in peace under God's wings, in our memories and eternally in heaven. All our love, Ron and Family

LINEBERRY, NOVELLA AVENELL STILES JACQUES Known by her family as mom and Grandma, and to everyone else as Novella or Mrs. L, began her earthly journey on July 18, 1939 in Lampe, Missouri as the second child of Ralph Garland Stiles and Goldie Pearl Jones Stiles, baby sister to Alfred and eventual older sister to twin sisters Leota and Leona. Along her journey she was married for 21 years to Del Jacques and together they raised two daughters, Deborah and Kathleen. In the middle of her journey she met and was married for 25 years to Edwin Lineberry. ECL continued his journey to the heavens on July 28, 2002 leaving her to continue her own journey here on earth. On November 2, 2013 she joined Ed with a smile on her face and peace in her heart. She was surrounded by the love of her family as she left our arms and flew into his. Novella's life on earth was successful in all ways and though her journey was peppered with "bumps in the road" and was not always an easy one she faced it with courage, humor, dignity and always an underlying love that she gave freely and accepted with grace. Now her family and friends are left to their Earthly journeys without her as she continues hers in the Heavens. She will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to have been touched by her love, she will never be forgotten or without the love that flows freely from realm to realm, so take our love to the heavens with you and we will keep yours forever in our hearts safe in the knowledge that you have eased our Earthly journey by paving the way and leaving a path for us to follow in this life until we catch up to her in the next. Your loving family and friends. Private interment was at the family farm. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. ZAMORA, LARAZO B. fondly known as Larry or LB, age 86, passed away November 6, 2013, at the family home in Albuquerque, surrounded by love ones. Lazaro was born on April 16, 1927 in Lincoln, NM to Cristobal and Fulgencia Zamora. He was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Dora Montoya Zamora and Libby Torres Zamora; daughter, JoAnn Sanchez; son, Michael Zamora; brothers, Cristobal II, Emilio; sister, Cecilia Apodaca. He is survived by his son David and wife Joyce, daughter Theresa Zimmerly and husband Tim, son-in-law Randy Sanchez, and daughter-in-law Gloria Zamora; grandchildren, Daniella (Richard) Shryock and Alejandro Sanchez, Ramona, Michelle, Zachary and Natalie Zamora, Justine and Samuel Zimmerly; sisters, Rosa Moore, Avelina Solt, Mary Trujillo and Delores Weesner; brothers, Lucio and Joe; several great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Lazaro worked for the US Postal Service for 32 years and served in the US Navy towards the end of WWII and was a Navy reservist. He spent 35 years in the New Mexico Army National Guard, retiring at the rank of Master Sergeant. During his service as a Mail Carrier, he was VP for the NM State Letters Carriers and President of the local branch. In July 2009, he was presented with his 60 year membership to the National Association of Letter Carriers. He was well respected and sought out for his knowledge of union affairs. Lazaro inherited from his mother, the gift to grow anything GREEN. He loved the earth and loved tending to it, which was made evident at every home he lived in, whether it be Albuquerque or Roswell. Lazaro was the consument outdoorsman. Raised hunting and fishing he continued until he could no longer walk the long miles he was accustomed to. Rather than resign, he continued to hunt from the passenger seat of his truck. On his last fishing trip he out fished his brother and nephews even though they had to bait his hook and set him up on a lake side chair. He will be sorely missed, but is now able to grow the most beautiful flowers in all of heaven. Rosary will be recited at 6:00 pm Thursday, November 14, 2013, at Daniels Family Funeral Service Carlisle Chapel. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at the San Juan Mission Church at noon on Friday, November 15, 2013, in Lincoln, NM. Interment will follow at the Lincoln Cemetery.
