ARAGON -- CHARLES Age 70, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, NM was called to heaven on January 8, 2012, with his family by his side. He is survived by his loving wife Josephine; sons Charles and wife Lori, Paul and wife Mona Lisa; daughter Jeanette McNeely and husband James; grandchildren Amanda, Nicole, Amber, Carlos, Erica, Ryan, J.J., Jacob, Martin, Jordan, and Kaylee; and many nieces, nephews, friends, and family. After serving his Country in the US Army for 20 years and working for the City of Albuquerque for 25 years, he retired. He worked hard, loved life, and will be missed by all. ASHCRAFT -- JOAN M. Passed away Jan. 9, 2012 at the age of 82. She was born Sept. 16, 1929, to Fred Heinrich Gustav Schlieper and Ella Marie (Moe) Schlieper, in St. Paul, Minn. She is survived by son, Evan Ashcraft (wife Ellen) of Tijeras; daughter Rachel Hall (husband Russell) and granddaughter Kristina Marie Hall, of Placitas; and sister, Carol Bushinski, Woodbury, Minn. Jo was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Joseph R. Ashcraft; her parents; and two brothers, Jim and Roger Schlieper. Jo earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in business from the University of Minnesota. She enjoyed family activities, such as traveling, skiing, camping, and sailing, and was an accomplished hobby painter in several mediums. She made a career at Prudential Insurance in Albuquerque. Jo was a kind, graceful soul who spread joy in her wake. Although an incurable neurological disorder crippled her body in late adulthood; she was always giving and considerate. She delighted in her many friendships. Her unbelievable optimism, cheerfulness and independence were an inspiring example to us all. Jo will be deeply missed, but just imagine her smile-now free of her uncooperative body and soaring with angel wings! BENN -- TED MERL SR. Passed away on January 5, 2012 in Dallas, Texas, at age 89. Ted was born March 1, 1922 in Seattle, WA to Annie Marie Montana and Donald Benn. He graduated from Edmonds High School in Edmonds, WA in 1940, and served his country as a member of the U.S. Air Force from 1942-1950. During World War II he flew 35 combat missions as a B-17 navigator. Ted attended the University of Washington from 1940-1941 and the University of Texas from 1948-1950 and spent the majority of his career working for the U.S. Government. He served with the U.S. Immigration Service in postings in Montana, Illinois, Arizona, Michigan and Calgary, Alberta. From 1967-1972, Ted was an advisor with the U.S. State Department and was stationed in Monrovia, Liberia and Saigon, Vietnam. He retired from the U.S. Immigration Service in 1983 and moved to Chelan, WA. He relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1995 and to Dallas, Texas in 2011. He is survived and will be missed by his children and their spouses, Judy Benn, Bangkok, Thailand, Ted Benn, Jr. and wife Sue, Dallas and Kristina Benn Kominek and husband Rick, Albuquerque; as well as grandchildren Davis, Zane, Parker, Seth, Maggie Mei and Ashton. He is also survived by his brother Donald M. Benn, Edmonds, WA. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 13th 10:45 a.m. at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.

CLARK -- SUSAN EDITH Passed away on January 9, 2012, at her home in the North Valley, after a struggle against cancer. Susan is survived by her husband, Rafael Saenz, who lovingly cared for her during her last months; three adult stepchildren in Costa Rica; her aunt, Edith Perry, of Bernalillo; and her brother, Robert Clark, of Denver, CO. Susan was dear to her many friends and to her students, with whom she shared her love of France and the French language, as well as the Spanish language. Susan taught Spanish and French for about eight years at CNM, where she inaugurated the French language program. She also taught for several years at Albuquerque's Alliance Francaise. Susan also leaves behind a beloved second family in France, with whom she often visited and lived over the years. Susan was born in New Haven, Conn. in 1955 to Betty Perry and Robert Clark. She attended Valley High School, and received her B.A. and Ph.D (in French) from the University of New Mexico. As a child she lived for a time in England, and during her college years she found study abroad opportunities in France and Spain. After college she lived in Costa Rica, where she met her husband, and taught Spanish and English for eight years at the Universidad Nacional in San Jose. They moved back to Albuquerque in 2001. Susan had a generous heart toward all beings, especially those in need. Her "children" were the many adopted pets of her lifetime, and she asked that her friends, in lieu of flowers, make a donation in her name to an animal protection organization, or to another worthy cause. Susan's ashes will be taken to France. There will be no memorial service.

GUTIERREZ -- DAVID ESPINOSA Age 58, of Albuquerque, NM, passed away, January 8, 2012. David was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, September 23, 1953. David was a photographer, designer, and chef whose creativity and eye for beauty can be seen through the various works he has left behind. David was a successful entertainment photographer in the late 70's through 80's. Some clients included David Bowie, Knight Rider, Guns N Roses, Motley Crue, Billie Idol, and Scorpions. David was also a fashion designer whose style was based on his Apache Indian heritage. David's work was showcased internationally and through 150 magazines including Vogue, Oprah, In Style, Us, People, Elle, and Talent in Motion to name a few. David's creativity expanded to bringing Native American Cuisine and Authentic Mexican to the Albuquerque community when he opened Black Horse Cafe. David was an avid explorer who traveled the world for inspiration and to share his bright light. HUCKABAY -- WILLIAM LANE "BILL" Died on January 11, 2012 after a long battle with cancer. He always kept a positive attitude and his sense of humor. He will be greatly missed. Bill was born on December 31, 1940 in Clovis New Mexico to William Lane "Huck" Huckabay II and Peggy Crane Huckabay. He lived most of his childhood years at the Sais Crusher located between Belen and Mountainair NM and attended school in both school systems. He moved to Clovis, NM his senior year and graduated from Clovis High School where he met and married Vivienne Andrews Huckabay. They had two children. He worked for the Sunshine Bakery in Santa Fe in sales and then Sears in Albuquerque. He divorced and moved to Kansas City, KS, then Aurora, CO, and later Rifle, CO. He followed his heart back to the Albuquerque area in 1995. He ran into an old school mate, Adele Dykers Thompson and fell in love. Bill and Adele had ten wonderful years together with her children and grandchildren. Bill never met a stranger and loved people. He made it a point to find out the names and important information of everyone around him. He always remembered the information and was interested in everyone's joys and sorrows. He was a Mason and was a member of many different lodges during his lifetime. He served as the Master of the Zia Daylight Lodge for the year of 2003. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his son William "Lane" Huckabay IV; nephew, Kent Chesney and grandson, Nick Thompson. He is survived by his wife, Adele, her three children, Marty, Bobby and Stephanie; grandchildren, David, Jesse, Sarah, Danny, Madison and Chloe; his sister Ruth Chesney; nephew Bryant and his daughter Alicia Huckabay; his brother-in-law and business partner, Marty Dykers; and many wonderful cousins, brothers and sisters-in law, nieces, nephews and their extended families. After his military service, he was a train conductor and engineer. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. MCABEE -- KAY ARTHUR Was born in Joliet, Illinois on Nov. 17, 1930 and passed away Jan. 8th after a month-long illness. He had been a resident of Albuquerque since 1986. Kay started his professional career as staff organist for the W.W. Kimball Company in 1952. After completing his musical education at the Chicago Musical College and the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, he went on to become a featured soloist in at least five national conventions for the American Theater Organ Society (ATOS), and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 1985. He was a pioneer in the theater organ world and well remembered for the series of concerts he performed at the Rialto Theater in Joliet, Illinois and the Aurora Paramount in Aurora, Illinois, and more recently at the Phil Maloof Roxy Organ at the Albuquerque Ramada Classic, Fred Hermes residence organ in Racine, Wisconsin and concert series for the St. Louis Theater Organ Society. Kay taught up to fifty students per week in Joliet for years at the World of Music. Kay was a member of the American Guild of Organists for 50 years, choir master and organist at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Frankfort, Illinois for 23 years and most recently, organist for Covenant United Methodist Church. Survived by his adopted family friend, Tony Horvat; niece Ellen Schroll; nephew Ted Dimmick; and brother-in-law, Charles Dimmick. Preceded in death by his parents, George S. McAbee and Edith Barbee McAbee and sister, Rosamary Dimmick. A Memorial service is planned for Saturday, Jan. 14th at 2 p.m. at the Covenant United Methodist Church. MCGINTY -- LAUREL D. M.D., M.B.A On January 9, 2012, the world lost a stellar member by the death of Laurel D. McGinty, M.D., M.B.A. at her home after a long and courageous battle with ovarian cancer. Dr. McGinty was born on June 20, 1955, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. After high school graduation she attended San Jose University earning a B.S. in Microbiology and a minor in Chemistry. She became a graduate assistant for Robert Fowler, PhD. under a grant from the NIH involving the techniques of bacterial genetics, resulting in a Master's Degree and publication of a number of scientific papers. She then attended Rutgers Medical School transferring in 1984 to the University of New Mexico of Medicine, earning her M.D. degree followed by internship and residency in Orthopedic Surgery. This was followed by a Phoenix Integrated Hand Surgery Fellowship. She established practice in Albuquerque with Lovelace Medical Center, serving a time as Chairman of the Department of Hand Surgery. She continued practice of hand surgery in Albuquerque until her death. In 1999, she earned a M.B.A. in Business Administration through the University of Phoenix. Dr. McGinty engaged in a wide variety of volunteer activities - Volunteer Educator for Nurse Trauma Specialist Level IV, Team Physician for the Sports Department of the Albuquerque Academy High School, host to several groups of exchange students through "Experiments in International Living", Founder/Editor of the Medical Student's Newsletter at Rutgers University - to mention a few. Among her awards and honors are the Alpha Chapter of New Mexico Alpha Omeda Alpha Award, the Merck Manual Award for Outstanding Service to the New Mexico School of Education, and a Resident Research Award for a presentation of research of note. Dr. McGinty authored or co-authored numerous publications and gave many presentations, and her certifications included Diplomate, National Board of Medical Examiners; Diplomate, American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons; Fellow, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons; and Certificate of Added Qualification of Surgery of the Hand (C.A.Q.H.S.). Dr. McGinty is survived by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. John McGinty of Edwards, Colorado; brother, John Patrick and his wife, Sigrid Leah McGinty of Elizabeth, Colorado; and longtime companion, John Wanick of Albuquerque; plus numerous extended family. MONDRAGON -- JOHN B. A longtime resident of Albuquerque died Tuesday, January 10, 2012. He is survived by his son, Thomas J. Mondragon of West Hollywood, California; daughter, Tina Johnston and her husband, Timothy Johnston of Abilene, Texas; and grandchildren, Brian and Beth Johnston. As the patriarch of the family he is also survived by nephews and nieces, Silverio, Louis, and Abel Paez, Mae Terry, Ishmael and Renee Mondragon, Adela Mondragon, Tony Cordova; sister-in-law, Crystal Mondragon; and many grand-nephews and nieces. He was born in Holman, New Mexico on September 11, 1930. He served in the Army in 1950-53. He earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees at Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico and continued his education, earning his Doctorate in Secondary Education at University of New Mexico. John will be remembered and missed by many due to his distinguished service to the education community and to New Mexico's children and families. He helped shape the careers of hundreds of educators and served as mentor and advisor to many prominent New Mexico educational leaders. He freely shared his historical insights and political perspectives that helped shape the educational policies of today. He never entertained the thought of retiring but rather continued to contribute by teaching Educational Leadership Classes at the University of New Mexico and Highlands University. He was a much sought after educational consultant both in New Mexico and nationally. All of the recognitions and honors he received are too numerous to capture here. Most noteworthy was his induction in to the New Mexico Coalition of School Administrators Hall of Fame, election as President of the CNM Governing Board on which he served for six years. He was elected to the Association of Community College Trustees Board and appointed to the Western Region Diversity Committee. He was a valued member of the New Mexico Public Schools Capital Outlay Council. He helped found the New Mexico MESA which supports minority students to pursue their studies in engineering, math and science. He was a strong supporter of the National Hispanic Cultural Center and strongly advocated for Bilingual Education, The Indian Education Act, and the historic Hispanic Education Act. Until his last days he remained a student and a scholar continuing his research and writing. At the time of his death he was collaborating on a book on the Policies of Educational Reform in New Mexico and he had begun writing his memoir which his colleagues are committed to finish. MOORE -- KATHRYN Age 88, a lifetime resident of New Mexico, died Monday, January 9, 2012. She is survived by her son, Thurman William Moore III of Albuquerque, NM; daughter, Pamela Ann Roberts and husband, Gary of Colorado Springs, CO; daughter, Dona Marie Seis and husband, Kent of Albuquerque, NM; grandchildren Jason Shiparski and wife, Amber of Colorado Springs, CO, Matthew Shiparski of Colorado Springs, CO, Kirbie Kathryn Seis of Long Beach, CA and Travis Collin Seis of Albuquerque, NM; great-grandchildren Hayley and Katelynn Shiparski of Colorado Springs, CO. Mrs. Moore was preceded in death by her husband, Thurman W. Moore and son, Richard Gregory Moore. Mrs. Moore was proud of her family's New Mexico heritage, tracing it back to Fort Union in the 1860's. She attended St. Vincent's Academy for Girls and St. Mary's Catholic School in Albuquerque, the Loretto Academy in Santa Fe and graduated from Santa Fe High School. Her first job was with the Santa Fe Civil Service Recruiting and Induction Center during World War II where she met her husband to be. They married in 1942 and remained married until his death in 1989. In her professional life, Mrs. Moore worked at Sandia National Laboratories for 15 years. In 1986, she became manager of the St. Joseph Healthcare Systems' three gift shops. She remained in that position until her retirement in 2006 at the age of 82. Mrs. Moore was involved as a volunteer with the St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary for over 30 years, serving as its President for two consecutive terms beginning in 1981. She became President of the New Mexico Hospital Association Auxiliary Service in 1999. In recognition of her extensive volunteer work, in 2004 she was inducted into the Silver Horizons New Mexico Senior Hall of Fame. Mrs. Moore was an Associate of the Sisters of Charity. A rosary will be recited Friday, January 13, 2012 at 7:00 pm at French - University Chapel. Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima, 4200 Lomas NE, with her cousin, Msgr. Francis X. Eggert, Celebrant. Interment will follow at Mt. MUSOLF -- MARY ELLEN Passed away peacefully on January 6, 2012 in Edgewood, NM. She was born in Wichita, KS on April 13, 1930. Mary was a loving sister, mother, grandmother, friend and neighbor who will be missed by all who knew her and loved her. OLIVO -- MARIE A. A resident of Albuquerque since 1970, was called home on Friday, January 6, 2012 at the age of 72, surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her daughter, Cindy and daughter-in-law, Bonnie; son, Joey and daughter-in-law, Joan; adopted son, Gary Pyland; sister, Denise Selby; brother, Frank Selby; four grandsons; one great-grandson; other family members and friends who loved and will miss her. Marie honorably served in the US Navy as a nurse. She worked at UNM Hospital for over 30 years, where she retired and she also belonged to the Lion's Club. ORTIZ -- TONY Age 83, was a life long NM resident, passed away on Monday, 1/09/12. Tony was a beloved Son, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather and friend too many. He is survived by his wife Erlinda; sons and daughters, Cruz Ortiz, Susana Baca and husband Joe, Alex Madrid, Victor Ortiz and wife Mary, Olivia Ortiz, Isabel Rodriguez and husband Richard, Dennis Ortiz and wife Josie, and Donna Turrietta and husband Andrew. He had 21 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and mother; two brothers; two sisters; and his first wife Ramona. Tony was a devoted Catholic, an active member of St. Anne's Parish, a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 14124, and the Assoc. of San Jose of Torreon. Tony and his wife Erlinda were the recipients of the St. Francis of Assisi award. He was a member of numerous Veterans organizations, DAV, Trench Rats, VFW, and the American Legion. He was an active volunteer for the VA and the 22 91st US Army Reserves Family Support Group. He served his country during the Korean War. Tony retired from the City of Alb. and the State of NM after 30 years of service. A Special Thank You to Dr. Haskins and the compassionate staff at NM Cancer and Oncology Center who cared for him for 11 years, and the VA medical Staff and a special Thank You to Dr. Forester. A special Thank You to Father Nick and the St Anne's parish staff for always being available. A Rosary will be held on Friday, 1/13/12 at 6:30 p.m., at St. Anne's Catholic Church on 1400 Arenal SW, reception to follow in the parish hall. OTTENI -- MARGARET MARIE Passed from this life Tuesday, January 10, 2012, after a short illness. She was born September 3, 1919, in Pittsburgh, PA, to Charles and Margaret Mechenbier, the fourth child in a family of ten children. On April 8, 1942, she married the love of her life, Leo Otteni. He preceded her in death September 28, 2006. They moved to Albuquerque, NM, in 1948 where they raised their five children. They remained active at Our Lady of Fatima Church their entire lives. Margaret was always proud of her husband and his accomplishments, but we know in our hearts that behind that successful man was a strong, intelligent, persevering wife. Margaret loved a good time, golf, bridge, and a bargain. She is survived by her children and their spouses: Joan and Frank Nordstrum, Lee and Diana Otteni, Ken and Tina Otteni, Mary Jane and John Hall, Elaine and Ed Cebula, her grandchildren: Lisa Sheppard, Chris Nordstrum, Becky Otteni, Carol Vencill, and her great grandchildren: Emma and Leo Sheppard, Myles Nordstrum, Tyler, Leah, Bryant, and Emily Vencill, her brothers: Norbert and Bernard Mechenbier and her sisters: Mercedes Ray and Vera Mae Gardiner. Margaret resided just over three years at Atria Vista Del Rio where she served as an ambassador and also became a vibrant member of that retirement community. The family thanks all the employees of Atria for their tender and kind care always provided to Margaret. Rosary will be recited at Our Lady of Fatima Church at 7:00 PM. Thursday, January 12th. TAPIA -- JOHNNY L. On January 10, 2012, Johnny L. Tapia, went to be with our Lord. He was 57 years old and was born in Las Vegas NM in 1954. Johnny was a beloved son, father, grandfather and brother. He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Tony Montoya. ULIBARRI -- RODOLFO Rudy passed away on 12-17-2011. He had requested that there be no services.
