Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Friday January 13, 2012

SUSAN EDITH Passed away on January 9, 2012, at her home in the North Valley, after a struggle against cancer. Susan is survived by her husband, Rafael Saenz, who lovingly cared for her during her last months; three adult stepchildren in Costa Rica; her aunt, Edith Perry, of Bernalillo; and her brother, Robert Clark, of Denver, CO. Susan was dear to her many friends and to her students, with whom she shared her love of France and the French language, as well as the Spanish language. Susan taught Spanish and French for about eight years at CNM, where she inaugurated the French language program. She also taught for several years at Albuquerque's Alliance Francaise. Susan also leaves behind a beloved second family in France, with whom she often visited and lived over the years. Susan was born in New Haven, Conn. in 1955 to Betty Perry and Robert Clark. She attended Valley High School, and received her B.A. and Ph.D (in French) from the University of New Mexico. As a child she lived for a time in England, and during her college years she found study abroad opportunities in France and Spain. After college she lived in Costa Rica, where she met her husband, and taught Spanish and English for eight years at the Universidad Nacional in San Jose. They moved back to Albuquerque in 2001. Susan had a generous heart toward all beings, especially those in need. Her "children" were the many adopted pets of her lifetime, and she asked that her friends, in lieu of flowers, make a donation in her name to an animal protection organization, or to another worthy cause. Susan's ashes will be taken to France. There will be no memorial service.
