Obituary for MCGINTY

LAUREL D. M.D., M.B.A On January 9, 2012, the world lost a stellar member by the death of Laurel D. McGinty, M.D., M.B.A. at her home after a long and courageous battle with ovarian cancer. Dr. McGinty was born on June 20, 1955, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. After high school graduation she attended San Jose University earning a B.S. in Microbiology and a minor in Chemistry. She became a graduate assistant for Robert Fowler, PhD. under a grant from the NIH involving the techniques of bacterial genetics, resulting in a Master's Degree and publication of a number of scientific papers. She then attended Rutgers Medical School transferring in 1984 to the University of New Mexico of Medicine, earning her M.D. degree followed by internship and residency in Orthopedic Surgery. This was followed by a Phoenix Integrated Hand Surgery Fellowship. She established practice in Albuquerque with Lovelace Medical Center, serving a time as Chairman of the Department of Hand Surgery. She continued practice of hand surgery in Albuquerque until her death. In 1999, she earned a M.B.A. in Business Administration through the University of Phoenix. Dr. McGinty engaged in a wide variety of volunteer activities - Volunteer Educator for Nurse Trauma Specialist Level IV, Team Physician for the Sports Department of the Albuquerque Academy High School, host to several groups of exchange students through "Experiments in International Living", Founder/Editor of the Medical Student's Newsletter at Rutgers University - to mention a few. Among her awards and honors are the Alpha Chapter of New Mexico Alpha Omeda Alpha Award, the Merck Manual Award for Outstanding Service to the New Mexico School of Education, and a Resident Research Award for a presentation of research of note. Dr. McGinty authored or co-authored numerous publications and gave many presentations, and her certifications included Diplomate, National Board of Medical Examiners; Diplomate, American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons; Fellow, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons; and Certificate of Added Qualification of Surgery of the Hand (C.A.Q.H.S.). Dr. McGinty is survived by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. John McGinty of Edwards, Colorado; brother, John Patrick and his wife, Sigrid Leah McGinty of Elizabeth, Colorado; and longtime companion, John Wanick of Albuquerque; plus numerous extended family. There will be a memorial luncheon at the Old Albuquerque Hotel, at 800 Rio Grande Blvd NW in Old Town, on February 4, 2012, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial remembrances may be made in her name to The Gynecological Cancer Awareness Project, 500 Walter St NE, Ste 508, Albuq., NM 87102; The Planned Parenthood Federation of America, 343 West 33rd St, New York, NY 10001; or any charity of your personal preference.
