Doty of Ellicott City, MD, Theodore R. Doty of Atlanta, GA, Peter S. Doty of San Francisco, CA and five grandchildren. He was born on September 8, 1928 in Fredonia, Kansas to Ethel and Charles Doty. Later his family moved to Topeka for better jobs with the beginning of WWII. There Stewart attended school and he had jobs after school. He graduated from Topeka High School. He received his B.A. degree from Washburn University in 1950. Next he received his M.A. degree from the University of Kansas in 1955, and his Ph. D from Ohio State University in 1964. While working two summers in Rocky Mountain National Park at Baldpate Inn, he met his future wife, Jean Schmechel of St. Joseph, MO. Theirs was a summer romance in Colorado, where Jean was vacationing with her family. Stewart was their waiter. Today they have been married for over 56 years. He was drafted, sent to Fort Ord for basic training and then to Fort Bliss for work on guided missles. After teaching at Kent State University in Ohio he joined the history department of the University of Maine in 1964 and taught there until his retirement in 1995, including serving as department chair. He taught French and European history as well as the history of French-speaking North Americans. As a scholar-teacher, Stewart wrote or edited a political biography of French fascist forerunner Maurice Bares, a Western Civilization textbook, an anthology of the Industrial Revolution, a book of the life stories of New England Franco-Americans in the 1930's, and another book on the struggle of Maine Acadians during the Great Depression. He taught generations of Maine students about the "World in the 20th Century" and he directed many of the Masters thesis in European history. Stewart is a past-president of the American Council for Quebec Studies. After moving to Albuquerque he co-authored "Photographing Navajos: John Collier Jr., on the Reservation" (University of New Mexico Press, 2002) that accompanied museum exhibitions in New Mexico and in Maine. He edited and introduced "The Journal of Ann McMath, an Orphan in a New Your Parsonage of the 1850's", a coming-of-age journal of an ordinary young woman, published by SUNY Press. At the University of Maine, Stewart led the successful drive to unionize all public higher education faculty of Maine. He became the founding president of its organization, the Education Faculties of the University of Maine (AFUM), and affiliate of the National Education Association (NEA). It was the first organization to unite in a single union any state's entire public higher education faculty. He served six years on NEA's Standing Committee on Higher Education where he encouraged NEA's leadership in reforming TIAA/CREF, the pension system of most American universities and non-profit organizations. For that work he was awarded the NEA's James M. Davenport award for his advocacy of the rights of higher education faculty. Stewart commented that this work allowed him and his wife to retire in modest comfort in Albuquerque. In Albuquerque, he taught both for OASIS and Life Long Learning with courses on Canada, "Jamestown, Quebec, and Santa Fe," and "The Luckiest Generation: America, 1945-1975." In 2010 he lectured on France of the Impressionist to supply background for the Impressionist show. Stewart led two hikes a month for Los Volcanes Senior Center, painted watercolors there, and led walking tours of Old Town for the Albuquerque Museum. HOFFMAN -- Lillian Hoffman, 79 years old, passed away unexpectedly, yet peacefully, on Tuesday, March 15, 2011, in Albuquerque, NM. Born August 22, 1931 in Philadelphia, PA, Lillian is survived by her three sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Deborah Hoffman of Corrales, NM; Robert and Heather Hoffman of Manhattan Beach, CA; and Steven and Flora Hoffman of Saratoga, CA; two grandsons, Gregory and Daniel; and two granddaughters, Emma and Julia. Lillian was remarkably strong, fiercely independent, and devoted to her family and many friends. A proud graduate of Philadelphia's prestigious Girls' High, she married Jules L. Hoffman on December 26, 1954. Their relationship together defined them both for the rest of their lives. Shortly after their wedding, they lived in Anchorage, AK, where Lillian was an advertising copywriter while Jules served in the U.S. Army. Returning to Philadelphia, they began their family, eventually settling in the suburb of Plymouth Meeting, PA. Lillian possessed a unique ability to listen to what people were trying to say. She applied her gift first as a volunteer, and later as a professional to counsel patients recovering from drug and alcohol addiction at the Eagleville Hospital in Eagleville, PA. Tragedy struck Lillian and her young family when a devastating fire at their home took her husband's life and left her a paraplegic in 1975. For the next 35 years, Lillian demonstrated unimaginable strength while living independently, first in Plymouth Meeting, and then from 1995 on, in Rio Rancho, NM. Her "condition," as she referred to her years in a wheelchair, taxed her physically. Yet everyone who approached her as a supportive friend or care provider soon found themselves receiving far more from Lillian than they had to offer her. She sensitively gleaned insights to the frailties and complexities of human relationships. Coupled with her extraordinary ability to articulate and share what she perceived, Lillian left indelible impressions on countless people of all ages. Lillian was determined to live independently, yet stay connected to her family and the people who were close to her. She designed and had built a veritable nature preserve in her backyard in Plymouth Meeting, bringing the local wildlife right up to her window beneath the branches of the willow, birch and maple trees in her yard. In Rio Rancho, she adapted to the local environment and welcomed roadrunners and jackrabbits to her desert garden that stretched out before a view of the majestic Sandia Mountains. Though she began to formally practice Zen meditation in the last decade of her life, she and Jules were always steered by a faith based on peacefulness and acceptance. "Way will show," was one of her favorite aphorisms. Lillian sought a calmness of spirit and practiced meditation and yoga regularly to attain the state of mind and body she desired. Everyone who came in contact with her could feel and see how far along this path she had traveled. More than anything, Lillian kept herself firmly grounded in the everyday. The simple tasks most people take for granted demanded from her extraordinary physical strength, creative problem-solving and a healthy sense of humor. Her courage and indomitable will had no limit. She tirelessly cheered on her beloved Philadelphia sports teams through dismal title droughts and the occasional championships. She was a self-taught master baker, learning how to adjust recipes to the high desert altitude and sending visitors off with homemade biscotti, rich chocolate truffles and other delights. She always listened when people sat and talked with her. Lillian shifted from student to teacher, equal parts curiosity and wisdom, so she was always learning and always giving. The lessons we all learned from Lillian Hoffman are the big, important ones: how to be independent, how to be honest with yourself and the people you love, how to behave with integrity and compassion. How to live. This is how we will remember our mother, our mother-in-law, our grandmother, our friend. Her family would be grateful for any contributions you may choose to make in Lillian's memory to one of her favorite charities, either Doctors Without Borders (www.doctorswithoutborders.org) or Canine Companions for Independence (www.cci.org).
