Obituary for AVILA

Elena Avila, 66, passed away on Thursday, March 17, 2011 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was born in El Paso, Texas on May 24, 1944. She received her Bachelors in Nursing in 1976, and went on to get her MSN in Psychiatric Nursing in 1981. Her strong desire to help people lead her on a fulfilling road to becoming a curandera and spiritual counselor. Elena inspired people with her lectures all over the world and touched people's lives wherever she went. Her published book, "Women Who Glows in the Dark," was a national bestseller and a true testament to the work she loved. Her poetry came from "a flowering need to express the deepest feelings of her soul." The plays she wrote and performed in demonstrated her passion for life. Elena shared her compassionate and loving spirit with all that knew her, and she will be remembered for her joyful laughter and beautiful smile. She is survived by her four children; Jamie Avila (Susan), Sondra Skory (John), Abel Avila (Pam), and Adrian Avila; and her greatest joys, her seven grandchildren; Katie Avila, Samantha Skory, Noah Skory, Andre Avila, Hannah Avila, Mia Avila, and Ryan Avila. She is also survived by one brother, Sergio Martinez; and three sisters, Irma Martinez, Rosario Martinez, and Marta Gorges. Rosary, followed by a celebration of her life will be held Monday, March 21, 2011, 7:00 p.m. at French, Westside Chapel, 9300 Golf Course Road NW. Mass will be Tuesday, March 22, 2011, 10:00 a.m. at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church, 5712 Paradise Blvd. NW. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 1900 Edith Blvd. NE. She will be dearly missed by her family and many friends, and she will forever be in our hearts.
