BALCO -- Elizabeth F. Balco was born on August 21, 1940 to Peter and Helen (Haveles) Farfaras in New York City. She moved with her family to Danielson, Connecticut, in 1948. Ellie, as she was called throughout her life, attended Danielson Grammar School and Killingly Memorial School, and graduated from Killingly High School in 1957. She graduated from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1961 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics. She began working in the field of education, teaching mathematics at Ansonia High School and then at the Norwich Free Academy. While teaching, she earned a master's degree from the University of Connecticut in Guidance Counseling. In 1964, she married George J. Balco of Ansonia, Connecticut, and they moved to Greenwich, Connecticut, where she taught mathematics and was a guidance counselor at Central Junior High School. The birth of her children Greg and Catharine began a ten-hear hiatus from teaching, and in 1980 she returned as a part-time computer coordinator and mathematics teacher at the Greenwich Country Day School. As her children grew and became students at the same school, she became a full-time mathematics teacher and subsequently head of the Mathematics Department. She and her first husband were divorced in 1992, and shortly thereafter she moved to Albuquerque and began teaching mathematics at Albuquerque Academy. She continued to teach at the Academy until her retirement in 2006. She married James Romero in 1998, and they settled permanently in Placitas. She was an uncompromising, passionate, and thoroughly professional teacher whose students will remember her not only for her teaching skills but also for the elaborate and striking three-dimensional polyhedra and other geometric constructions that she and her classes created. She was an accomplished seamstress throughout her life and enjoyed all things to do with fabric; she was also an avid artist and combined these interests in a range of fabric and textile arts. She was an enthusiastic golfer, skier, ice skater, and tennis player. Her family and close friends will also remember her as a wonderful cook. She will be remembered and mourned by large communities of friends, colleagues, and former students at all the schools where she taught, in her community in Placitas, and at Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, where she and Jim maintained a home and spent many summers. She died on January 12, 2011 at home in Placitas. She is survived by her husband; two children from her first marriage; three of Jim's children; and one grandchild. A memorial service for Ellie will be held on Thursday, January 20, 2011 at 3:00 p.m., at the Las Placitas Presbyterian Church in Placitas. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name can be made to one of the following organizations: PB & J Family Services (www.pbjfamilyservices.org); Haven House (http://www.havenhouseinc.org); or La Casa Rosa Food Bank at Las Placitas Presbyterian Church.

DUNLAP -- Rick M. Dunlap, a uniquely positive, energetic and courageous man, lost his battle with cancer on November 9, 2010 at the age of 60. Never one without the other, lovingly side-by-side, Rick and his beloved wife, best friend and soul mate, Debbie (always "Deb" to Rick) were married for 40 years while finding inspiration in each other in a rare and beautiful relationship. Born in Seattle, WA, his family moved to Albuquerque when Rick was an infant. He loved to work and started doing so at the age of 14. With Rick's entrepreneurial spirit and the desire to own their own business, Rick and Debbie started Merit Insulation, Inc. in 1983 with a dream, willingness to work hard, competitive spirit, and a small loan only adequate for one pick-up truck and one employee. Rising to work early each morning and returning late at night, Rick built Merit Insulation into the largest mechanical insulation company in New Mexico. Generous to a fault, Rick treated his employees as family and was proud of how many families the business was able to support. Rick frequently remarked, "Life is good," always living each day to its fullest while never complaining. No matter how he felt, he showed a spirit for life, caring and love, of strength and commitment mixed with a wonderful sense of humor, a great laugh and a warm smile. In addition to loving to build the business, his other passions included reading, traveling, gardening, gourmet cooking, home improvement projects, volunteering, and golfing at the Albuquerque Country Club and Pendaries Village. Rick served as President of many construction related organizations and was currently a Board Member for the Western Insulation Contractors Association and a Trustee for the Mechanical Contractors Workers Compensation Fund. Other survivors include his treasured daughters, Dana Schaefer of Albuquerque, and Kim Milliman and her husband, Robert of Houston, TX; He loved and doted upon his grandchildren, Savannah Schaefer and Mason Milliman; Other survivors include in-laws, Larry and Nedra Gordon of Albuquerque, who thought of Rick as "one of their own sons"; brothers-in-law, Gary Gordon and wife, Terri and their children, Celine and Bryce of Albuquerque and Kent Gordon and wife, Elli and their daughter, Bianca of Santa Rosa, CA; brother, Les Riedel and wife, Nancy of Seattle, WA; sisters, Debbi Barnes and husband, Bill of Sacramento, CA and Cathi Judkins and husband, Lee of Newton Grove, NC. Debbie expresses her loving appreciation to the scores of friends who have supported her during the recent difficult months. Celebration of a Wonderful, Optimistic, and Generous Life will be held Sunday, January 30, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Albuquerque Academy Simms Performing Arts Center, 6400 Wyoming Blvd NE. FISHER -- Margaret Verna "Van" Fisher, died peacefully on December 18, 2010, being freed from the struggles of this mortal life and her failing earthly body and now resting in the loving arms of her Lord. Van was born in Sawyer, Michigan, to Joseph and Mary Ruth Parren, on March 8, 1926. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister Pearl Wennerberg; first husband Richard Olive, the father of her four children; second husband, Niveo Fisher, the love of her life; and her first child, Jack Norman Olive. She is survived by her sisters, Nerma Pearson and 'Feetz' Cornwell, "fifth" sister Katie Garrabrant; children, Leslie Ray Olive and wife Soccoro, Debra Dian 'DD' Urrutia and husband Saul, and Merri Ruth Lewis and life partner Robert Setchell; as well as many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren; 'grand-cats and grand-dogs, and friends and loved ones. Van grew up during the Depression and World War II on her parent's dairy farm, and at four years old, suffered from double pneumonia, pleurisy, and empyema. Although the doctors didn't think she would survive, she did and at 16, had the damaged tissue of her left lung removed, with advice that her body could not tolerate childbearing if she lived that long. While in high school, she, like many young ladies, held jobs normally held by men, who were oversees fighting the war, and worked at the 'Warren Featherbone Factory' making corsets and rain gear. She graduated from New Troy High School in 1943, attended Michigan City Business School for a time and then started working for Michigan Bell as a telephone operator on a 'cord board' in Benton Harbor in 1944, transferring to Mountain Bell in Albuquerque in 1949, coming west for her health to the desert of New Mexico. She met Richard Olive and they married in July, 1950, moved to Wichita, Kansas and she worked assembling airplanes for Cessna. They returned to Albuquerque in 1954, and Van worked for Mountain Bell until she retired in 1983. For many years, she earned money for her children's Christmas gifts by creating and selling beautiful doll clothes. Van and Dick divorced in 1971. Four years later she met and married Niveo Fisher, a Shriner and an Elk. Evenings after work, they often danced at the Elks club. She and Niveo played in the Palo Duro Senior Band, serenading many senior gatherings, she on the melodica and he on the flute and piccolo, and traveling around the country to Shrine conventions. Following Niveo's death in 1980, she traveled with a faith group as a missionary providing song around the world, including Switzerland, Austria, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Czechoslovakia, Tahiti, Australia, New Zealand, Morocco, Moorea, Tahiti, England, Scotland, and Wales. After her retirement, she did pet and home sitting and caring for elderly friends. She was active in volunteer groups and activities throughout her life. She was on a hot air balloon chase crew during early Balloon Fiestas, was an avid reader and a certified tutor for "Literacy Volunteers of America", and volunteered at libraries throughout her life. She sang and played the piano in the high school Glee Club and in her church growing up, later, she taught Sunday school, worked in the church library, drove the church van to pick up seniors and deliver children home after church activities, and served as head usher for several years. She was a life-long blood donor, accumulating over 50 pints of whole blood and platelets given. A lifelong Republican, she always voted and 'worked the polls' for years as both presiding judge and general poll official. Van was an environmentalist before it was popular - using the sun to make sun tea and dry fruits, picking up others' trash, collecting aluminum cans to recycle, purchasing one of the first Prius cars in Albuquerque. She loved to garden, even if it was just a few tomatoes at her apartment, where she served as resident attendant for many years. She was an active supporter of the Shrine Children's Hospitals through her activities in the Daughters of the Nile, serving as a Chorister and Lady of the Gates, and as a 'Call Girl' for the Honored Ladies Shriners' widows group. Even though she never learned to swim, she 'did laps' and water aerobics at the Horn YMCA regularly. She loved to travel on trains, wear hats, and collect bears, hot air balloon memorabilia, and Fenton custard glass. She enjoyed wearing bright, pretty clothes and jewelry, and was Beauchamp Jewelers' longest customer before her death. Although she claimed to be a shy person, she had an exuberant and generous spirit. Her philosophy in life was that she was not put on this earth just to take up space but to help others. She had a strong and abiding faith in God and looked forward to joining Him with joyful anticipation. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Van Fisher will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 215 Locust NE (www.firstpresabq.org) on Saturday, January 22, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Van would wish you to donate to the Shriners' Hospitals for Children (c/o Ballut Abyad Shrine, 6600 Zuni SE, Alb., NM 87108), the In-As-Much fund at First Presbyterian Church, or give a pint of blood to your local blood bank.

STAFFORD -- Patrick Morgan Stafford, age 60, passed away on January 14, 2011 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was preceded in death by his parents, J. W. and Georgine Stafford of Trigg, Virginia. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Kristie Stafford; his daughter, Katie; his son, Jess Walter; and his sister, Sue Ellen Turner of Jonesborough, Tennessee; as well as countless other friends and loved ones. Pat was employed by MD Anderson Cancer Center at Presbyterian's Kaseman Hospital. He was a medical physicist that specialized in radiation therapy and an associate professor at the University of Texas. His career in medical physics spanned over 30 years, and he received his advanced degrees from Emory University and the University of Texas. Although he was highly educated, Pat was a very humble man and was loved by everyone he has ever worked with or known. Pat was also an accomplished trombonist and played with Hoffmantown Church orchestra, the Albuquerque Symphony, and the Albuquerque City Band. Pat was an ordained deacon and lived his life serving others. His greatest desire was to serve God by giving of himself through his work and investing his life in the lives of others. Pat's life-long dream was to build and fly his own airplane. He completed his plane in 2009, and he was able to test pilot it with his best friend, Charles Garrison of Charlotte, North Carolina. Most importantly, Pat was the most incredible and loving father and husband. He adored his wife more than anything and was still passionately in love with her after over three decades of marriage. To his children, Pat was the best father that could ever be imagined. He never minded watching the same Disney movie fifteen times in a day when they were children or hearing about the everyday happenings of their lives while they were in college. He was, and still is, their hero. Pat was a family man, and his family will never be the same without him, although we know that he is rejoicing with Jesus. The tentative date for a celebration of Pat's life and reception is February 5, 2011 at Hoffmantown Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Details will follow this week on caringbridge.org (patstafford). In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to either Pilots for Christ International or Hoffmantown Church Missions, 8888 Harper Drive, N.E., Albuquerque, New Mexico 87111.
