SLATER -- Richard (Dick) Slater, 87, passed away on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 in Albuquerque, NM. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Emery Thieman; nieces, Alice Thieman, Betty Humphrey and husband, Pete, and Patricia Thieman; nephew, Mike Slater and wife, Margie; five great-nieces; and one great-nephew; and several great-great-nieces; and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his loving wife of over 50 years, Josephine Slater. Richard was a WWII veteran, retired as Production Supervisor of a paint manufacturing company, and was an avid golfer. SOLTYS -- Frank J. Soltys, 75, of SaddleBrooke, AZ passed away September 4, 2010 following a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth "Betty"; brother John; Aunt Virginia Kaczor; nieces, Christine Soltys and Joann Hatter; and several other nieces and nephews. Frank was born in Newark, NJ on December 9, 1934. He graduated from Newark College of Engineering and was a member of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. Following graduation, Frank was employed by Babcock and Wilcox as a start-up engineer on power plants, traveling throughout the country. While working in Albuquerque, he liked the area so much, he decided to stay. Frank was employed by Bridgers and Paxton Consulting Engineers, Inc., for 25 years. Frank and another engineer formed a partnership in a mechanical engineering firm. In 1994 they expanded to include electrical engineering. Frank retired in 1996 and moved to Arizona, settling in the community of SaddleBrooke. He was a member of several engineering societies and a Registered Engineer in several states. Frank and Betty visited family and friends in Albuquerque frequently. He enjoyed golf, traveling and reading. Services will be held in October. TAPIA -- Augustine G. Tapia , 85, of Albuquerque, beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend, passed away on Friday, September 17, 2010, while surrounded by his loving family. Born and raised in New Mexico, Mr. Tapia proudly served his country during WWII , in the 346th infantry company, United States Army. He was preceded in death by his loving wife , Antonia Tapia; and son-in-law Richard Lucero. Augustine is survived by his loving family, children, Tillie Lucero, Charlotte (Raymond) Thomen, Larry(Isabel) Tapia and Leonard (Norma) Tapia; grandchildren, Richard Lucero , Carmelita Lucero, Alicia Tapia, Abran Tapia( Margo Padilla) and Gabriela Tapia; great-grandchildren, Isabel Gurule and Scarlet Tapia; sisters, Eva (Raymond) Casias and Eleanor Barreras. He will be greatly missed by his family and by those whose hearts he touched. TAPIA -- Carol Jean "Jeanie" Tapia passed away quietly at her home with loved ones on Wednesday morning, Sept, 15th, 2010. Jeanie was born November 28, 1955 in Gallup, NM and was proud to call NM her home for most of her life. She is survived by her two daughters, Bernadette Gabrys and Jolene Gutierrez; her long time love, Allen Wade; her six granchildren, Tarah, Ashley and Melissa Gabrys, and Alex, Dominic and Jonathan Gutierrez; her sons-in-law, Walter Gabrys and Anthony Gutierrez; as well as three siblings; and several neices and nephews. Jeanie always had a positive attitude and was always willing to lend a hand or her last dollar to anyone that needed it more than her. She was a loving and forgiving woman that has taught us all how to live and love. She will be greatly missed and forever in our hearts. WILKIRSON -- Martell Wilkirson, 84, died Wednesday, September 15, 2010. Martell was born in Kokomo, Indiana on November 30, 1925. She moved to Albuquerque in 1950. Martell was predeceased by her son, Pete Wilkirson; her sisters, Enaz Hoppes and Mimi Heitzman; and her parents, Pete and Viola Lambert. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, William B. Wilkirson; son, Adam Wilkirson and his wife Tina; daughter, Karen Wilkirson and her partner, Cathy Sierra; sister, Eulalia Taffe; grandchildren, Ryan Wilkirson, Jacob Wilkirson, Casey Guilfoyle, and Mimi Sierra-Wilkirson; many nieces and nephews; and her loving caregivers, Janelle, Rianna, and Vicky. Martell loved to travel, golf, and play cards. She was generous, thoughtful, fun-loving, and devoted to her family. YOUNG -- Olga Young, 97, of Albuquerque, passed away peacefully at The Cottages Senior Living Center on September 16, 2010, after suffering for many years with Alzheimer's Disease. Olga was born in Chicago Heights, Illinois on November 3, 1912, to Italian immigrant parents, Anselmo Maoloni and Enrica Paoletti, both from Monteprandone, Italy. She was the third of five children. Olga grew up in Matteson, Illinois and attended Thornton Township Junior College and then the University of Illinois, graduating in 1935. While at the University she met her future husband, Robert Young, who later became known for his work as a Navajo linguist, when they both took a Spanish class studying Don Quixote. Olga taught school in Illinois for several years and then married Robert on December 30, 1939. After her marriage she moved to the Southwest, living first in Arizona and then New Mexico. Olga was a devoted wife and mother, an avid gardener, and a lady of great warmth and generosity. She never lost sight of her Italian heritage, maintained close ties with her family in Illinois, and retained her ability as an adult to speak her first language. Olga's husband preceded her in death in 2007. She is survived by her daughter, Linda Sue, of Albuquerque. CORBETT-COBOS -- Marianne Corbett-Cobos nee Maldener, 69, of Albuquerque passed on September 18, 2010. Marianne was born in Idar-Oberstein, Germany on November 11, 1940. She is survived by her husband Irving Cobos; her son Stephan Corbett; and her two grandsons Nicholas and Zachary Corbett; She also leaves behind her granddaughter Sarah Bryan. Marianne was preceded in death by her parents Siegfried and Friedel Maldener; and her youngest son Eric Corbett. During her life, Marianne enjoyed boating and spending time with her family at Elephant Butte Lake. She was a wife, daughter, mother, aunt, granddaughter, grandmother, cousin and friend to many and to her family was known simply as "Omi", which in German means "little grandmother". She enjoyed her profession as an office manager to Michael Scialla, Orthopedic Surgeon. She has been living in America since 1962 and embraced the lifestyle of New Mexico. FELIX -- Rita Maria Felix devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, has gone home to be with our heavenly father on September 16, 2010. Rita was born in Albuquerque on July 10, 1941. Rita was preceded in death by her parents Horacio and Sadie Sanchez; and brother Louie Sanchez. Rita is survived by her husband Leo Felix of 52 years; and her children, Leo Jr. and Jenny Felix, Joann Felix, Betty Marquez and Rick, Bobby and Elaine Felix, Dorothy and Jim Esquivel, Diane Felix and Elicia Marquez; She was a loving grandmother to Oracio, Julie, Frances, Abel, Vanessa, Marc and Jake and a great-grandmother to Oracio Jr, Joshua, Monica Rita, Adriana, Angelica, Ignacio, Destiny and AJ; Rita is also survived by her best friend and loving sister Armida Sanchez and husband David. A rosary will be recited on Monday, September 20, 2010 at 7:00 p.m., at Our Lady Of The Most Holy Rosary, 5415 Fortuna Rd NW. GARCIA -- Dr. J. Patrick Garcia was at home surrounded by family when he peacefully went to be with the Lord on September 18, 2010. He was 61 years old. He was born on January 10, 1949 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Patrick is survived by his parents, J. Placido and Adeline Garcia; wife Carol Jones Garcia; son, Jason P. Garcia and wife Jodie; daughter Jacqueline M. Garcia and husband Henno van Arkel; stepsons, Adam Jones, Bill Jones and Coby Little Soldier; grandchildren, Justin and Jared Garcia, Taylor Eden, J. D. Shotaya and Kaylie Ann Little Soldier, and Henry Jones and Dominick Garcia; brothers, Dr. J. Placido Garcia Jr. and Munira K. Garcia, Joseph Garcia and wife Tina Garcia; sister, Mary E. Garcia. He grew up in Socorro, and lived most of his adult life in Albuquerque, NM. He was an exemplary mathematician and excelled in academics. In 1988 he received his PhD from UNM in Educational Administration. Dr. Garcia began his career teaching mathematics at Gadsden High School in 1970. He became a part of the Albuquerque Public Schools in 1971 where he taught mathematics at Taylor and McKinley Middle School. He was soon tapped as assistant principal for McKinley Middle School and principal for Harrison Middle School. Because of his extraordinary leadership and exemplary work ethic he was assigned as Director of Transportation in 1992. As of July 2009, he became the Executive Director of Operations at APS. He continued in this position until he went on medical leave in January 2010. Those that knew Patrick characterize him as an ethical individual who held high expectations for himself and others. His intelligence, quick wit, and wry sense of humor were his trademark. He never sought the limelight and was happy to have others shine. People remember his kindness and his devotion to God and his family. His love and gratitude to Carol for her care and devotion was constant. Five years ago he was diagnosed with a terminal illness, primary pulmonary hypertension. He handled his condition with grace, never complained, worked hard and became active in the Pulmonary Hypertension Association traveling around the United States where he gave hope to many as a role model that PPH didn't have to rule your life. He lived life with gusto and treated each day as a special gift. Very recently he was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. Again, he was a model of courage and grace under fire. He succumbed just two weeks after his diagnosis. His family and friends are moving forward with his wish to bring awareness, research and support to those suffering from pulmonary hypertension. November 6th and 7th will usher the inaugural Dr. J. Patrick Garcia "Breathe Easy "5K Run and Walk. In lieu of flowers the family requests support of this event. GONZALES -- Gloria Gonzales, 62, a native New Mexican, passed away on September 10, 2010. She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Felix Gonzales; daughter, Felicia Spicochi and husband John; son, Estevan Gonzales and girlfriend Rebecca Gilmore; sister, Lillian Chavez and husband Orlando; sister-in-law, Mabel Hendrickson and husband Ray; sister-in-law, Angie Soto and husband Sam; niece, Melinde Gonzales and husband Armenio; brother-in-law, Harold and his wife Jimmie; niece, Juanita Chavez and daughter Ivy; sister-in-law, Minnie Martinez; niece, Deborah Santistevan and husband Robert; nephew, Mark Martinez and wife Denise; sister, Nina Hoch. She had a special place in her heart for Seth and Asher Garcia and their parents Abel and Michelle. She also had many other nieces, nephews, "adoptive" children and grandchildren, and friends.
