DAVIDSON -- Opal Mae Davidson, 90, a resident of Albuquerque since 1950, died February 9, 2008. She is survived by her children, Carl Davidson and Diana Davidson; grandchildren, Scott Davidson and wife, Teri, Christine Yates and husband, Doug, Jason Willins, Curt Davidson, Crystal Holmes and husband, Ron, Chad Davidson and wife, Kellie; 10 great-grandchildren; her siblings, Lester, Art and Lessie; and many other family members and dear friends. Mrs. Davidson was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Carl Boyd Davidson, Sr. and several other family members. Opal was the creator and owner of Opal's Silver and Turquoise Jewelry for 35 years. Mrs. Davidson was a renaissance woman, able to change with the times. She was a great seamstress and a wonderful cook. Services will be Saturday, February 16, 2008, 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel. DESJARDINS -- Dennis "DEZZ" DesJardins CMSGT RET. Passed away January 28, 2008. Born and raised in Green Bay, Wisconsin February 2, 1943. Enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1961, serving 28 years, stateside and over seas. He was awarded the "Legion of Merit" along with other prized decorations and acquired countless friends during his period of service. Dezz moved to Albuquerque after retirement from the USAF. In Albuquerque he worked as the GM for a contracting agency until April 2006. Dezz was a very proud member of the Rio Grande Corvette Club and Oldsmobile club. He was also very proud of his involvement in the Make a Wish Foundation here in Albuquerque. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Anja; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Ryan; and three granddaughters: Leah, Kylie and Terra; and by two brothers: Gary and Bernie, and one sister Mary. GAUTSCH -- VI After waging a 7+ year battle against cancer, Vi Gautsch succumbed Tuesday evening, February 12, 2008, at home. She was 70 years of age. With her were her husband of 47 years, son, and youngest daughter. She was a loving wife, mother of three, grandmother of seven, and a pillar in our community. Vi was born May 9, 1937 in Culver City, CA, the daughter of Charles and Claire Chisholm. While in high school, Vi began modeling part-time, as well as taught modeling. She was also in the marching band, and writer's club. After high school, she worked as a legal secretary and court transcriber. She continued working as a legal secretary/court transcriber for almost twenty years. She lived in Los Angeles, California to the age of 22. At this time, Vi took a one-way ship ride to Germany, in May 1959, where she met 2nd Lt. Thomas J. Gautsch. They were married in July 1960 in Weisbaden. Upon their return to the States, they began their family and Vi continued to work and participate in organizations. In 1974, she obtained her real estate license and worked with Lukens & Associates. In 1983, Vi and and her good friend Connie Ryan started The Real Estate Center. These two ladies then brought the real estate franchise, Coldwell Banker, to Albuquerque in 1988. After expanding this company to three offices and having numerous residential and commercial agents, Vi and Connie sold Coldwell Banker in 1996. At this time, Vi continued with the original The Real Estate Center working in residential, commercial, and property management. Her accolades include such honors as attaining the esteemed CCIM (Certified Commercial Investment Member) designation in 1984. She was the second woman to attain this designation in the state of New Mexico. She was also a board member on the Albuquerque Board of Realtors, and held many official positions, including being President of the Board. Vi was also active in the commercial organization CARNM. She was named Realtor of the Year in 2002. Public organizations of which she belonged to include Kiwanis, and People Living Through Cancer. Through 47+ years of marriage, Vi and Tom shared their passion for alpine skiing, and traveling the world. They had traveled back to Germany, England, France, Italy, and Ireland. They and their children have also enjoyed visiting the beaches of Hawaii and California, including Santa Catalina Island. Vi developed a passion for Avalon Beach in Catalina as a child which she shared with her husband and children for almost five decades. Vi had also had the honor of meeting and being blessed by both Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI. Vi leaves behind her husband, Thomas J. Gautsch; son, Dr. Thomas L. Gautsch; daughter-in-law, Michele Gautsch; daughter, Susan M. Gautsch; and daughter, Jennifer A. Gautsch. She and Tom also have seven wonderful grandchildren: Christopher C. Gautsch (18), Jonathan T. Gautsch (16), Hannah L. Gautsch (12) Ezequiel K. Sandoval (11), Sarah E. Gautsch (8), Emily G. Gautsch (8), and Anthony I. Gautsch (4). Visitation will be at 5:00 p.m. at French Mortuary on Wyoming NE. Vigil Memorial and Rosary will follow at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass for Vi will be held at 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Newman Center on the UNM Campus, located at 1815 Las Lomas (southeast of Lomas and University). GILLIAM -- Evelyn Dolores Sanchez Gilliam, age 77, died Saturday, February 9, 2008 in Granville Medical Center. She was a native of New Mexico and was the daughter of the late Alfonso and Henrietta Heller Sanchez. She was preceded in death by her husband William Gilliam Jr. She is survived by two sons, Robert C. Gilliam of Oxford and Edward A. Gilliam of Durham; a sister, Carol Nottingham of Fairfax, VA; six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Richard and Beatriz Heller and her paternal grandparents, Jose and Roselia Sanchez; also two sisters, Patricia Smysley and Loretta Jonkeers. Services will be held Friday, February 15, 2008 from Immaculate Conception Church, 1619 Copper Ave. at 10:30 a.m. in Albuquerque, New Mexico. LANG -- Helen L. Lang, 86, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on Friday, February 8, 2008, after a long illness at her home. Helen was born October 5, 1921 in McPherson, KS, attended public schools, graduated from McPherson High School in 1940, and attended McPherson College for one year. She went to Denver, CO to attend Barnes School of Commerce (business school). While she was in Denver, she met John Lang, her now deceased husband, who was stationed at Lowrey Field, just outside of Denver. Helen left Denver and returned to McPherson for a period of time, and it was in McPherson on November 19, 1944, that Helen and John were married. Shortly after they were married, John was sent overseas for the duration of the war. Helen spent part of the time working in McPherson and the rest of the time working in Albuquerque, where she lived with John's mother and stepfather until John returned to the states. She continued working with the government in Albuquerque. John and Helen eventually built their own home. Helen worked for the government and was a Welcome Wagon Hostess. She was a longtime member of La Mesa Presbyterian Church and served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. She also attended the Women's Bible Study Group luncheons at La Mesa Church. Helen was also a Girl Scout leader, a Cub Scout den mother, and did various other volunteer work. Helen is survived by her son, Ronald E. Lang; grandchildren, Debbie Gurule, Jonathan Scheller, Elizabeth Lang Hernandez and Christopher Lang; eight great-grandchildren; and sister, Mary Budd. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Lang and daughter, Judith Kay Scheller. Helen will be greatly missed by relatives and friends. Services will be held Friday, February 15, 2008, 11:00 a.m., at La Mesa Presbyterian Church, 7401 Copper NE. Friends may visit one hour prior to service. LUCERO -- Ramon J. Lucero, 75, a resident of Albuquerque since 1956, passed away on Monday, February 11, 2008, after a long illness. He is survived by his two sons, Orlando Lucero and Albert Lucero and wife, Loretta, all of Albuquerque; former wife and close friend, Elena E. Lucero of Albuquerque; sister, Ignacita Lucero of Pueblo, CO; brother, Arturo A. Lucero of Albuquerque; and numerous nieces and nephews throughout New Mexico and Colorado. Ramon was preceded in death by his sister, Florentina Montano; and his parents, Jose S. and Carlota Lucero. He was born on May 14, 1932 in Las Vegas, NM. After school he entered the U.S. Air Force and served honorably during the Korean Conflict. Upon his return to New Mexico, Ramon attended DeWolf's Beauty College in Albuquerque where he received his cosmetology license. He married Elena E. Romero, of Las Vegas, on December 26, 1956. Ramon owned and operated Sur-Groom Hair Designs for over 30 years. He then retired and was an entrepreneur owning and operating Mr. Acoustic and Superior Building Maintenance, Inc. Ramon was very active in Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church, serving as a Eucharistic Minister and feeding the homeless. He had many friends in the community. Ramon was a loving husband and father and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. MCDUFFIE -- Brenda (Jenkins) McDuffie, passed away at age 63, on Thursday, February 7, 2008. She was born August 26, 1944, to mother Sadie Jenkins, in New York City, NY. Brenda remained in NY, until her mother's death, and at age 17, she moved to Charleston, South Carolina. In 1989, she moved to Albuquerque, NM, where she worked for the University of New Mexico until 2005. Brenda is preceded in death by her mother, father, and step-son, Terry. MORGAN -- BRENT K. On Monday February 11, 2008 Brent K. Morgan passed away unexpectedly at age 44. He is survived by his wife of 20 years Holly and their children Cameron, age 18, and Renee, age 12. He is also survived by his mom, Linda Morgan; brother, APD SGT., Ty Morgan; sister, Asti Morgan; grandma, Lelia Moore and grandmother, Ingrid Morgan; aunt, Marlane Norman; uncle, Eric Morgan; and several cousins. Brent was preceded in death by his father, Rees Morgan and grandfather, Casey Moore. After honorably serving 15 years in the United States Army Brent was currently completing his degree in Computer Science. He was a wonderful and loving husband, father, son, brother and friend to many. He will be FOREVER missed and loved. MURPHY -- Patricia Grace Murphy, 67, a resident of Albuquerque, since 1974, died Tuesday, February 12, 2008. She is survived by her husband, Daniel Murphy; son, Colin Murphy and wife, Elizabeth Cotton-Murphy of Chicago, IL; sister, Pam Everitt of Norwich, England; and many dear friends and relatives. Patricia was born in Dublin, Ireland, on March 5, 1940, adopted at age 2 by Frederick and Margaret Howe of the UK, and grew up in Scotland and England. She studied at Cambridge, becoming a nurse in 1961 and midwife in 1963. She worked throughout England for the next decade, also spending time as a missionary nurse in Jordan. In 1970 she married Dan, a USAF SMSgt she met when both were working near RAF Lakenheath in England. After their move to Albuquerque she worked as a psychiatric nurse and case manager until her retirement in 2000. Patricia's friends will remember her sharp mind, independence, and quick sense of humor, as well as the cheerful nature and quiet spirituality which she retained even to the end of her struggle with dementia. POSKE -- Mary Louise Poske, age 74, of Albuquerque, NM passed away Monday, February 11, 2008 at a local care facility. She is survived by her daughters, Diana S. Kaesberg and Deborah L. Brownfield of Palm Bay, FL; her grandchildren, Brian Sibrel, Rebecca Asanovich, Natasha Aquino; her great-grandchildren, Joshua Livingston, Hanna Asanovich and Ashton Aquino; and her brothers, Jerry Poske and David Poske. Ms. Poske was born on March 3, 1933 in Dayton, Ohio to Joseph and Catherine Poske. She was retired Newspaper Librarian for the Dayton Daily News in Dayton, Ohio. Ms. Poske also worked for The Washington Star, The Ft. Lauderdale Sun Sentinel and The Santa Fe New Mexican. She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. PUTHOFF -- ARTHUR Brother Arthur Puthoff, O.F.M., died at Lovelace Hospital in Albuquerque on February 13, 2008. He was born the son of Adam F. Puthoff and Johanna (nee Schnurr) Puthoff on August 22, 1920, in Cincinnati, Ohio where he grew up. He made his first profession of vows on August 16, 1942. Brother was stationed in Chinle, Houck and Lukachukai, Arizona; Calumet, Michigan; Grants and Gallup, New Mexico. Brother Arthur was chauffeur to Bishop Bernard Espelage, O.F.M., DD, the first bishop of the Diocese of Gallup, New Mexico. He retired to the Franciscan friary in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1998. He is survived by siblings Harry Puthoff , Palm Harbor, Florida, and Margaret Gallenstein, Mary Koch, Sally Holthaus and Bob Puthoff, of Cincinnati, Ohio as well as numerous nieces and nephews; great-nieces and -nephews. Reception of the body and Rosary will take place at St. Teresa of Avila Parish in Grants, NM on Sunday evening, February 17, 2008, beginning at 7:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Teresa of Avila Church on Monday morning, February 18, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Grants Community Cemetery. REED -- Jack W. Reed. A Celebration of Life Service will be held for Jack W. Reed at First Congregational Church UCC, 2801 Lomas Blvd. NE, on Saturday, February 16, 2008, at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. Lee Albertson officiating. Jack, a resident of Albuquerque and retired "Weather Wizard" for the Balloon Fiesta, passed away at the age of 84 on Friday, November 30, 2007, after a brief but feisty bout with lung cancer. Preceded in death by his mother, step-father, and son, Roger, Jack is survived by his wife, Lois Reed; daughter, Margaret "Marti" Reed, both residents of Albuquerque; and granddaughter, Terra Lillie Reed, a University of Oregon student currently attending the University of Lyon in France. RUSSELL -- Roger W. Russell, 76, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, died Wednesday, February 13, 2008. He is survived by his wife, Lorinda; his sister and brother-in-law, Veloy and Doug Franklin; his daughters, Jill and Pam and his daughter-in-law, Doreene; his grandchildren, Brianna, Josh, Tamara, Carlos, Emily, Megan, Cameron, Clint and Lauren. He was preceded in death by his son, Jeff Russell and by his parents, John and Bernice Russell. Roger was a long time KOB production director and was the bass singer for The Living Word and The Ambassadors gospel quartets. STARR GIVLER -- Hazel Starr Givler, 85, a resident of Albuquerque since 1940, passed away on February 12, 2008. A graduate of the University of Albuquerque, she worked at First National Bank, retiring as a Vice-President in 1987. Following retirement, Hazel developed a passion for writing, becoming a published author. She was a charter member of Del Norte Baptist Church. She spent many years teaching women's Sunday School, and worked in several ministries. Hazel was preceded in death by her first husband, Lloyd Starr; her second husband, Marvin Givler; and her daughter, Sharon Morris. She is survived by her brothers, O.B. Johnston and his wife, Geneva, Walter Johnston and his wife, Mary, Edwin Johnston and his wife Hazel, and Roy Johnston and his wife, Kathy; stepsons, Russell Givler and his wife, Ruth and their children, and Randy Givler and his family; grandchildren, Michael Morris and Kerri Morris and their families; great-granddaughter, Kate Buller; son-in-law, Terry Morris, his wife Saundra and their children; and many other nieces, nephews, and cousins. She also has extended family throughout the southern states. Hazel is a loved daughter, wife, mother, Sis, Gram, GG, teacher and mentor, and will be missed. STRANGE -- James Stevens Strange, an Albuquerque resident for 16 years, died Sunday, February 10, 2008. He was born March 11, 1965 in College Station, TX. Jay was a Registered Nurse in the OR at University of New Mexico Hospital. Jay worked his way through nursing school by bartending at Applebee's. Jay will be missed by all who knew him. He was a good friend and an outstanding nurse. Jay is survived by his mother, Elizabeth M. Tarchala of Porter, IN; siblings, Shaun (Richard) Beecher of Martinsville, IN, Gene (Emily) Strange of Arlington, TX, Peggy (Charles) Thomas of Portage, IN, and Colleen (Jan) Olstad of Albuquerque; six nieces and nephews; aunt, Anita (Eloy) Serna of Albuquerque, uncle, Theodore (Jeanie) Stephens of Palo Alto, CA. He was preceded in death by his father, James Strange, sister, Sherry Strange and step-father, Barney Tarchala. VAN CLEAVE -- Chester T. Van Cleave, 90, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, passed away on Tuesday, February 12, 2008. He is survived by his sons, Don Van Cleave of Albuquerque, John Van Cleave and wife, Robbyn of Rio Rancho, and Joe Van Cleave and wife, Andrea of Albuquerque; and sister, Patricia Snepenger and husband, Joe of Colorado Springs, CO. Chester was born at the Van Cleave homestead on the east mesa of Albuquerque on August 8, 1917. He attended Albuquerque High School and was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Army Air Corps in the North African and Italian Campaigns. He later served his country in a career with the Defense Atomic Support Agency and Defense Nuclear Agency. Chester was a dedicated, loving father and friend and will always be remembered for the interesting stories he would recount of life in and around Albuquerque, and his experiences in WWII. With his passing Albuquerque has lost one of its true sons. Services will be held Monday, February 18, 2008, 1:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel. WADLEY -- Marsha Louise Wadley Born October 15, 1958 died February 10, 2008 at age 49. Marsha was born in Albuquerque to Mattie B. Williams (Wadley) a beloved member of Grant Chapel AME Church who preceded her in death. She is survived by one Aunt, Louise Edwards of Los Angeles, CA; guardians, Joyce Terry of Denver, CO; and Jonathan Johnson of Tacoma, WA; cousins Juanita Tucker of Germantown, MD; Jewell Welford of Freehold NJ; Jerry Johnson and Janet Hunter of the city, and dozens of extended family throughout the country. The special circumstances of Marsha's life touched many in our community.
