AZURE -- Ben Azure, age 70, passed away Tuesday, February 1, 2005. He is survived by one son, Matthew and wife, Carla; and nine grandchildren; two sisters, Merceline Grace and Rose Ann Weston and husband, John. He is also survived by his longtime loving companion, Carnation Armijo; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ben was preceded in death by his father, Fred Azure; mother, Merceline; and brothers, Fred and Joe. He was a Navy Veteran (Korea), a lifetime member of VFW Post 401, American Legion Post 13, and D.A.V. Special thanks to nurse Joan and Dr. Sawyer from UNM Hospice and the Layman Family. BESSE-BREWER -- Matthew C. Besse-Brewer, 39, a long time Albuquerque resident, left us on Tuesday, February 1, 2005. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Besse-Brewer; sons, Cooper and Spencer Besse-Brewer; Ursula Besse, all of Albuquerque; the Brewer family, parents Douglas and Judy; brother, Paul; sister, Bonnie Crane; grandmother, Anna Brewer, and numerous nieces and nephews all of Farmington, NM; He will be remembered as a devoted husband and father, loving son, gifted chef, and a friend to all. BRYANT -- Col. Raymond S. Bryant, USA (Ret.), 86, a resident of Albuquerque since 1974, died Monday, January 31, 2005. He was a former resident of Belen from 1941 to 1974. He is survived by wife, Carmen A. Bryant; daughters, Virginia Morgan and Jane Thomas; stepsons, Jerry Rice and wife, Cheryl and Gene Rice and wife, Ruth; stepdaughters, Mary Johnson and husband, Bill, and Ruth Saavedra and husband, Joe; 17 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; brothers, James Bryant, Frank Bryant, and Eldon Bryant; sisters, Ruth Bradley, Zula Carrell, Ella Bryant, and Betty Jones. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Hessie Bryant; brothers, Dawson Bryant and Joe Bryant. Mr. Bryant worked for AT&SF Railroad for 37 years in the mechanical department at Belen, retiring as car inspector in 1978. He served in the US Army for 34 years being enlisted, commissioned, active duty and reserve status, with service in Europe in WWII, retiring as Colonel in AUS Reserve in 1978. He was Past Master of Bethlehem Lodge #56, AF&AM; Past Patron of Jessamine Chapter #45, O.E.S.; Awarded Rainbow Grand Cross of Colors in 1963; and took Scottish Rite degrees in 1965. Mr. Bryant had paid up life membership in Reserve Officers Association and American Legion Post #49. Member AARP and Transportation Communications Union. Services will be held Friday, February 4, 2005, 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, with Rev. Marvin Capehart officiating. DANIEL -- Jerry E. (Red) Daniel, 57, a resident of Albuquerque passed away peacefully at home in the arms of his loving family after losing his battle with cancer, and was welcomed into heaven on February 2, 2005. Red is the beloved husband to Mrs. Irene Daniel, married for 35 years. Red is also survived by his children, Theresa and husband, Ronald, Ramona and husband, Robert, Jerry and girlfriend, Lesley; six grandchildren, Ronald Jr. and girlfriend, Natalie, Evangelina, Camille, Anthony, Naleah and Ryan; his mother in law, Mrs. Lucy Garcia; his mother, sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Red was a member of the Catholic Church and a Veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in the Vietnam Era, he was long time member of the Brotherhood Local #1319 carpenters union. A visitation for Red will be Friday evening at Holy Family Catholic Church, 562 Atrisco SW from 6:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. by Trinie and Valerio Lucero. A final visitation will be Saturday morning from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the San Jose de Armijo Cemetery with Military Honors. DOMINGUEZ -- Deborah Lynn Dominguez died on February 1, 2005. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 5, 2005 at 2 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 312 Unser, Rio Rancho. Deborah is survived by her husband of 28 years, Lee Robert Dominguez; mother, Martha Fernow; sister, Linda Sumski and her husband, Terry; brothers, Charles, Douglas, and Thomas Fernow; in-laws, Thomas and Zelma Dominguez. Deborah served as a mother to many of the children in the neighborhood. They include Nathan and Brian Larason, Stephanie Balmer, Laurel and Jack Britt. FLEMING -- Gloria C. Fleming, 78, was called home by the Lord on January 29, 2005 to join her beloved husband, George. She missed him so much that she did not want to stay here without him. So, the Lord sent George to take her by the hand, and he led her through the Gate to Heaven. Both are now free from pain and together in joy forever. She was born October 15, 1926 in Woonsocket, RI and a retiree of A.T. Cross Company. Gloria is survived by her children, Ronald and Suzanne; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sister, Stella Whitehouse. Mass of Celebration is scheduled at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 4, 2005 at Gate of Heaven Cemetery and Mausoleum followed by private Inurnment. In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name may be designated to the charity of one's choice. We would like to extend a very special thank you to all of the wonderful staff at Manor Care Camino Vista who cared for Mom during her brief stay. The caring staff on Zia Wing will always have a special place in our hearts, especially Marie Honeycutt and associates who perform an exceptional task in the care of the elderly. GEALY -- Joanne Patricia Gealy, 77, a resident of Albuquerque, died peacefully in her home on Friday, January 7, 2005. She was born on Saturday, October 29, 1927, in Chicago, IL. Joanne is survived by her cousins and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, H. Peter and Myrtle Gealy. Joanne graduated from Muldon High School in Rockford, IL in 1945, received her B.A. from Sienna Heights College in Adrian, MI in 1949, and her Master's Degree from the School of Social Service Administration of the University of Chicago, in 1961. She worked in Chicago as a Psychiatric Social Worker before moving to Albuquerque in the mid 1960s. Joanne was employed by Bernalillo County for many years as a Social Worker. She was very proud of her Welsh Heritage and was a former member of both the Welsh Society of Albuquerque, and the National Association of Social Workers. Joanne was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, an avid reader, gardener, and a gourmet cook. She will be deeply missed by her friends. Mass will be celebrated Monday, February 7, 2005, 10:00 a.m., at St. Borromeo Catholic Church, 1818 Coal Pl. SE, with Father Joseph Tran, Celebrant. GISH -- Nancy Kay Louder Gish, 61, a resident of Albuquerque, NM for 40 years, passed away Tuesday, February 1, 2005 after a long illness. Nancy was born in Alamogordo, NM, on September 13, 1943, the 4th generation of a pioneer family in Otero County. She is survived by her daughter, Amy Kathleen Gish Vermilion and husband, Jeff of Albuquerque; grandsons, Dean Jacob and Gavin Wade Vermilion; and granddaughter, Lena Marie Vermilion, born January 1, 2005, all of Albuquerque; her brothers, Barry Louder of Las Cruces, NM; Gerald Louder and wife, Lynn of Thousand Oaks, CA; her sister, Janie Louder Mossman and husband, Fred of Albuquerque; nephews, Andrew Mossman and wife, Ashley and their sons, Bennett and Jack all of Albuquerque, NM; Clark Mossman and wife, Dana and their sons, Ryan, Cade, Seth and wife, Esther all of Seattle, WA; Matthew Mossman and wife, Stacy of Albuquerque, NM; David Grant Mossman and wife, Katherine of New York, NY; James Louder and his son, Andrew of Tucson, AZ; Jeremy Louder of Irving, TX; Ryan Louder of Thousand Oaks, CA; Jeffrey Mattice and wife, Karen and their sons, Chandler and Brayden of Coto de Caza, CA; nieces, Cheryl Louder Turner and husband, Dr. Derek Turner and their children, Garrett and Brianne of Las Cruces, NM; Sarah Mossman Wolfe and husband, Steven and their sons, Zachary and Nathaniel of Vancouver BC, Canada; aunts, and uncles, Jack and Maud Rathgeber, and Virginia Beacham all of Alamogordo; Betty Beal of Albuquerque; and Winifred Thanisch of Austin, TX; and many cousins. She was preceded in death by her dear parents, Beverly and Fred Louder of Alamogordo; aunts and uncles, Shirley and Randolph Reese, Sebron Beal, Arthur Beacham, Claude Thanisch, Mamie and Ross Bryan and several cousins. Nancy was a graduate of Alamogordo High School and attended UNM. She had a long professional career as an executive secretary working in Denver with Great Western United, in Los Angeles for Tosco. After returning to New Mexico she was employed in the Banking community for many years, and later at Albuquerque Academy. In addition to her work responsibilities, Nancy was a devoted mother. She cherished longstanding friendships with neighbors, business associates, childhood and church friends, and longtime friends in her weekly Bible study. Her Christian faith sustained her through her long and difficult illness, her many loving family members were also a source of support. Nancy has a very special place in our hearts, and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Special thanks are given to the staff at the Cottages, Dr. Ortega, and Zia Hospice for their loving care. Services will be Saturday, February 5, at 2:00 p.m. at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel, with Pastor Rick Donaho, officiating. GREEN -- Rome Keith Green, longtime New Mexico newspaperman, died in Ruidoso January 30, 2004. Born in Macks Creek, MO, May 8, 1931, Green moved to Clovis as a teenager and remained in New Mexico for most of his life. He graduated from ENMU at Portales in 1952 with magna cum laude honors in journalism. Subsequently he began his career in print journalism. In 1995 he became publisher of the Ruidoso News. He was editorial adviser for the News at the time of his death. He was employed by newspapers at Socorro, Belen, Hobbs, Farmington, Santa Fe and Taos. From 1982 until 1988 he was co-owner of the Socorro El Defensor Chieftain. From 1989-91 he simultaneously published the Valencia County News Bulletin. Green strongly believed in community journalism and strove to make each paper, regardless of size, the best voice it could be for the readership. In 1997 Green was named to the Hall of Fame of the New Mexico Press Association. While employed at the Ruidoso News he taught news writing classes at ENMU-Ruidoso. Avocations included reading, oil painting, and travel. Green read three or four books a week. He traveled in Europe, including spending a college summer on scholarship at the University of Oslo, and again adventuring throughout England and western Europe. Other travels included Mexico, Canada, and while in the USMC, Puerto Rico and Greece. In recent years Green became passionate about preserving old Fort Stanton near Ruidoso. He is survived by a sister Carolyn Weaver and wife Ann. A Memorial Service is planned in Ruidoso for Monday, Febuary 7, 2005 at 2 p.m. at La Grone Funeral Chapel, 341 Sudderth Drive, Ruidoso. The family suggests memorials to NMSU Keith Green Community Newspaper Scholarship, c/o Dr. Sean McCleneghan (journalism department chair), or to Fort Stanton, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of Fort Stanton.

MAES -- RICHARD CARLOS MAES, age 55, of Santa Fe, passed away Monday, January 31, 2005. He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Maes, Mr. and Mrs., George Marquez; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Rodarte, Lorenzo Marquez, Ernie Marquez, Frank Maes, Gilbert and Frances Maes, Isabel Maes, Mr. and Mrs. Alfonso Maes and Billy Maes. Richard was born May 24, 1949 in Las Vegas, NM, the loving son of Carlos and Rachel Maes. He graduated from St. Michael's High School and Highlands University. He served in Vietnam in the U.S. Navy as a Frogman. He was also a member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion. In lieu of flowers contributions may be donated to the P.M.S. Hospice Center, 1400 Chama Street, Santa Fe, NM 87505. He is survived by children: Steve Maes, Mike Maes and Katie Patterson; brothers and sisters-in-law: George Maes and wife Anita M. MARQUEZ -- Marcial M. Marquez, 92, passed away on January 17, 2005 at Anna Kaseman Hospital. He was born in Ysarrie, New Mexico in 1912. Marcial was a wonderful carpenter who loved helping everyone. A daughter, Dolores Rodriguez, and husband, Larry survive him. He has four grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Criselda Pohl and Elena Lucero; and one brother, Tony Marquez and wife, Perfy, also survive him. Marcial also has many nieces, nephews, and friends who care for him very much. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Charles Catholic Church, 1818 Coal Place SE, on Saturday, February 5, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. Cremation has taken place. MCKINLEY -- Valerie J. McKinley April 4, 1937 - January 29, 2005 Angel Fire resident, Valerie McKinley, died peacefully early Saturday morning January 29, 2005 after 6 months of living through cancer. Valerie and her husband, Warren, built their home in Angel Fire in 1999 and moved there full time in 2002 from Albuquerque. Valerie and Warren had been married only 7 years before moving to Angel Fire. Valerie moved to Albuquerque from New Jersey in 1958, with a short stay in Tennessee in the early 1980s. She held a Master's Degree in Elementary Education and Counseling, and retired from a fifteen-year career as a counselor in the Albuquerque Public Schools in 1999. Valerie was patient, unselfish, spiritual, and a loving friend to all who ever met her. She was an accomplished artist and loved painting. Her great passions in life were her husband, children, family, and especially her grandchildren. She had been involved in the United Church of Angel Fire, Church Bible Study, Garden Club, and the Library. Valerie is preceded in death by her first husband, Stuart Asselin of Albuquerque; and her parents, Charles Auer and Helen Reich Auer. She is survived by her husband; sister, Nancy Hrabal; brother, Larry Auer; sons, Stu Asselin, David Asselin, Timothy Asselin, Matthew McKinley; and daughter, Mary Mckinley Robinson; eleven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Two Memorial Services will be held in her honor, one at 4:00 p.m., Thursday, February 3, 2005 at Faith Lutheran Church, 10000 Spain Rd. NE, Albuquerque, NM, Pastor W. MICHAEL -- Helen Terry. Beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Helen Terry Michael, 81, died the morning of Friday, January 28, 2005, following a lengthy illness. Helen is survived by her daughter, Erin M. Ruscetti and husband, Joey; granddaughters, Megan C. Chavez, Morgan C. Chavez; sister, Kathaleen Previti; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard W. Michael. Helen spent the majority of her life in Albuquerque where she assisted in the operation of the family owned business, Michael's Bar and Lounge, on Menaul. In addition, she worked for Southern Union Gas Company, Broadway Southwest, and Maloof Industries. Helen was instrumental in the fund-raising efforts for the March of Dimes in the 1960s and the organization of the twenty-fifth and fortieth year reunions for the Albuquerque High School class of 1942. She was also a volunteer for a number of years at Our Lady of Annunciation School. A Memorial Rosary Service will be held Saturday, February 5, 2005, 4:00 p.m. at French Mortuary, University Chapel. MURRAY -- Kathleen Ann "Kay" Murray, 61, loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend went home to the Lord on Monday, January 31, 2005 after a long struggle with lung disease. Kay is survived by her beloved husband of 40 years, Bill; children, Brenda Kay Akin and husband, Steve, Sean Murray, Cristie Murray, Melanie Murray, Kimberly Murray, Lance Murray, and Casey Murray, all of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Kyle and Kelley Murray, Stephen and Kaylin Ann Akin, John, Mason, and Jake Murray, Dillon, Donovan Murray, and Kristopher Rayner Jr.; brothers, Ricky Price of Albuquerque and Kevin Helmick of Belen; friend and caretaker, Leni Logan; and many other loved ones and friends. Kay was preceded in death by her parents, her grandmother, Josephine Price and her son, Randy Murray. Kay's occupation in life was being the "World's Greatest Mom." She was involved in all of her children's activities throughout her life. She was the Room Mother in elementary school, the Girl Scout leader, the Team Mother and most of all her kids' biggest fan and supporter. Her true joy in life was being a Mother and Grandmother. Cremation has taken place and a family service will be held at a later date. PEREA -- Juan J. Perea, age 101, and a lifetime resident of New Mexico, passed away Tuesday, February 1, 2005. He was born June 24, 1903 in Lumberton, NM, and was preceded in death by his son, Louis Perea; grandson, Samuel Rodriguez, and he is survived by his wife, Candelaria Perea; four daughters, Priscilla Stansbury and husband, Gary of Albuquerque, Rosemary Perea of Albuquerque, Nancy Martinez and husband, Filbert of Rio Rancho, Maryellen Rodriguez of San Bernardino, CA; son, Raymond Perea and wife, Terri of San Bernardino, CA; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; numerous other family members and friends who loved and will miss him. PFEIFFER -- Robin Hillemeyer Pfeiffer, 93, died January 31, 2005 in Chandler, AZ. Robin was born in Havana, IL on February 23, 1911 to Henry and Sarah (Roberts) Hillemeyer. She graduated from Draughns Business College in Peoria, IL. On April 20, 1930 she married Walter Morris Pfeiffer. They made their home in Chicago before moving to Corona, NM in July of 1931 to join the Robert's Mercantile Company started by Robin's Aunt, Dell Roberts, and Uncle, Ben Roberts. Robin was an integral part of the Corona community for over 70 years. She was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Corona Presbyterian Church. She was instrumental in starting the Corona Senior Citizens. She was a member of the Corona Cowbelles and the Corona Extension Club. After Roberts Mercantile closed, Robin became assistant postmaster for several years. Robin moved to Vista Del Rio Assisted Living in Albuquerque in 2001. In December 2004 she moved to Chandler, AZ to be near family and especially her only great-grandchild. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Stan Kimball of Lake City, CO and Gilbert, AZ; two granddaughters, Sara Kimball of Waco, TX and Sharon Kimball of Houston, TX; one grandson, Scott Kimball and wife, Melissa and great-grandson, Cole Walter of Chandler, AZ; sister-in-law, Edna Pfeiffer Goodrich of Albuquerque, NM; niece, Linda Goodrich of Denver, CO; and nephew Don Goodrich of Albuquerque; many cousins and countless friends. Funeral services will be held at the Corona Presbyterian Church on Saturday, February 5, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Wesley Lackey and Reverend Terry Aellio officiating. PLATH -- Victor J. Plath passed away in his sleep on Sunday, January 30, 2005, after a long struggle with Parkinson's Disease. He was born on Sunday, January 1, 1922 in Davenport, IA, the only child of Emma E. Theidermann-Plath, homemaker, and Victor Plath, and independent grocer. He is survived by his wife of six and a half years, Marianne Newman Plath; his five children and their families: "Budgie" Plath and wife, Debbie, of Granby, MA, Vincent Plath and wife, Judy, of Fairborn, OH, Phillip Plath of Albuquerque, Barbara Plath of Santa Rosa, CA, and Laura Anne Plath of Lakeport, CA; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Victor was an avid aviator with a lifelong hobby of making and flying remote control airplanes. He earned his first pilot's license at the age of 19. Victor married Irene Mozelle Gatlin in 1943. He served in the USAF for 23 years, during which time he served as a flight instructor, ferried planes, and flew cargo in various parts of the world. He spent his last 6 years of service at Manzano Base in NM. After retiring from the Air Force, he and his family spent 2 years in Dallas, TX and 1 year in Santa Fe, NM and then resettled in Albuquerque. He was a longtime member of Faith Lutheran Church, was a gifted woodworker, and worked for Hancock Mutual Funds, Terra Corp. among others. As a widower in 1998, Vic married Marianne Newman, who has lovingly and devotedly cared for him during his illness which was diagnosed in 2000. His bright smile and twinkling eyes will always be remembered. SMITH -- Virginia E. Smith (Virgie), 80, was born on May 12, 1924 in Ralls, TX to James Walter Hunton and Mary Eleanor (Driscoll) Hunton. She was born into a farming family and spent her younger days on farms in places like Ralls, TX, Claunch, and Socorro New Mexico. She was preceded in death by Carl A. Smith, her husband of 38 years. She is survived by her sons, Carl E. Smith and wife, Sandy, Leon Smith and wife, Sharren, Jimmy Smith; her daughter, Vera Lee and husband, Allan Pearson; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. SOLOMON -- Laura Beatrice Thorne Solomon September 23, 1926 - February 2, 2005 Laura Beatrice Thorne Solomon, beloved wife, mother and friend, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2005. Laura was born in Las Cruces, NM, on September 23, 1926. During WWII she was a railroad telegrapher in California. When the war ended she attended the University of Arizona and upon graduation took training to be a certified medical technician. She was employed by the hospital in Las Vegas, NM where she met and married her husband Charles S. Solomon, who was attending Highlands University, in 1950. Laura also completed education courses at Highlands so both she and Charles could teach at Northern New Mexico Normal School in El Rito, NM from 1952 to 1953. Adventure called and the Solomons moved to Alaska where Laura again worked as a medical technician for the Army Air Force in Anchorage, Alaska. From Alaska the couple moved to Washington, D.C. where her husband attended law school and she worked at the George Washington University Hospital. Laura and her husband returned to New Mexico, moving to Santa Fe in 1956, where they raised their two girls, Carol and Susan. During her time in Santa Fe, Laura volunteered for many organizations. She helped with Girl Scouts and Campfire Girls with her daughters, served as a docent at the Palace of the Governors, provided medical technician services for various clinics. Most recently she worked as a mentor at Sweeney Elementary School. Laura also worked as a legal secretary for her husband until his retirement. Laura loved travel and people; arts and crafts; music and children; gardening and liberal causes. She is survived by relatives and countless mends in New Mexico, Texas, California, Idaho, and Great Britain. A memorial has not yet been scheduled. THOMAS -- Bruce Thomas, age 58, passed away at his home in Tucumcari, NM on Thursday, February 3, 2005 following an extended illness. Bruce Thomas was born September 29, 1946 in Artesia, NM. He had been Senior Vice President and Cashier of the original First National Bank, which later became Norwest Bank, and presently Wells Fargo. During his banking career, he was on the Board of Directors for both the First National and Norwest Bank in Tucumcari. Surviving Bruce Thomas is his wife, Gayle of Tucumcari; his daughter, Stacey Lynn of Clovis, NM; his brother, Gary Thomas of Dallas, TX; and his sister, Kay Thomas McKee of Artesia, NM. Funeral Services have been scheduled for Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in the Dunn Memorial Chapel with Rev. Dr. Tom Broom, Minister of the Center Street United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in the Tucumcari Memorial Park Cemetery.
