GREEN -- Rome Keith Green, longtime New Mexico newspaperman, died in Ruidoso January 30, 2004. Born in Macks Creek, MO, May 8, 1931, Green moved to Clovis as a teenager and remained in New Mexico for most of his life. He graduated from ENMU at Portales in 1952 with magna cum laude honors in journalism. Subsequently he began his career in print journalism. In 1995 he became publisher of the Ruidoso News. He was editorial adviser for the News at the time of his death. He was employed by newspapers at Socorro, Belen, Hobbs, Farmington, Santa Fe and Taos. From 1982 until 1988 he was co-owner of the Socorro El Defensor Chieftain. From 1989-91 he simultaneously published the Valencia County News Bulletin. Green strongly believed in community journalism and strove to make each paper, regardless of size, the best voice it could be for the readership. In 1997 Green was named to the Hall of Fame of the New Mexico Press Association. While employed at the Ruidoso News he taught news writing classes at ENMU-Ruidoso. Avocations included reading, oil painting, and travel. Green read three or four books a week. He traveled in Europe, including spending a college summer on scholarship at the University of Oslo, and again adventuring throughout England and western Europe. Other travels included Mexico, Canada, and while in the USMC, Puerto Rico and Greece. In recent years Green became passionate about preserving old Fort Stanton near Ruidoso. He is survived by a sister Carolyn Weaver and wife Ann. A Memorial Service is planned in Ruidoso for Monday, Febuary 7, 2005 at 2 p.m. at La Grone Funeral Chapel, 341 Sudderth Drive, Ruidoso. The family suggests memorials to NMSU Keith Green Community Newspaper Scholarship, c/o Dr. Sean McCleneghan (journalism department chair), or to Fort Stanton, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of Fort Stanton.
