Cox -- Euola Cox:"As we reflect....on a Notable Life!" On Monday morning, February 7, 2000, one of God's soldiers was called from labor to reward, Euola W. Cox. Affectionately referred to as"Schoochie" by her family and friends, Dr. Cox was the youngest of ten children born from the union of Finch and Dora Wardlow in Eufaula, Oklahoma on March 13, 1929. She grew up in Muskogee, Oklahoma and received her early education at Dunbar Elementary School and graduated from Manuel Training High School. She continued her quest for educational excellence by earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Langston University. She then attained her Master of Arts degree and Doctorate degree in Education from the University of New Mexico. In 1952, Schoochie married Simon Wilson and their union was blessed with three children, Bernastine, now deceased, Daryl and Vodra. She later married Henry Cox, deceased and Lonnie Graham of Muskogee. Dr. Cox began a life of tireless service as an educator and community servant in 1958. She pursued her passion for training young people for 25 years as a Classroom Teacher, Counselor and Principal in the Albuquerque Public School System. In 1980, she continued her career in education as an Assistant Professor of Education and Liberal Arts at Eastern New Mexico University. She retired from there as Professor Emeritus in 1985. The Euola Cox Scholarship Fund was later established to help minority students. Retirement from education was by no means a time to"sit back and smell the roses" for Schoochie. She continued to contribute to the education and training of other through research, writing and publishing articles, educational counseling, lecturing and conducting seminars and workshops in a variety of educational disciplines. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority for over 50 years. In addition to education, Dr. Cox had always had a heart for community service. Over a span of 50-plus years, she had shared her time, talents and expertise in an effort to improve the communities she was a part of. Whether working with young people or acting as chairperson for a civic organization, her goal was to"help somebody, as she passed along." Although Schoochie was known for her professional achievements and community work, all that she had done had been driven by her love for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She had lived by the scripture, Proverbs 3:6, which reads,"In all thy ways, acknowledge the Lord and He shall direct thy paths." Schoochie walked life's highway directed by God and along the way, she had touched the lives of many. Dr. Cox was preceded in death by two husbands; her parents; seven brothers; and a daughter. Her memory will be cherished by her loving family, son, Daryl Cox and wife, Jane; daughter, Vodra Dorn and husband, William; five grandchildren, Guyla, D.D., Quentin, Daryan and Desmond; sister, Elnora Morrison; brother, George Wardlow; along with a host of caring nieces, nephews, cousins, surrogate children and many, many loving friends.
