FLEISCHMANN -- Hedwig "Hedy" Rosa Fleischmann, died peacefully at home on Friday, February 1, 2008 after seven years of slowly declining health. She was born in Freienwil, Switzerland on November 4, 1915, the sixth of ten children of Verena and August Burger. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence; her son, Michael; and by several brothers and sisters. She left Switzerland as a young woman, eager to expand her horizons. Beginning as an au pair, she met Lawrence while working as a waitress in a Swiss restaurant in Los Angeles. They married and had four children, each born in a different state. She raised her family largely in Los Angeles where she had many friends and was active in her church. Though she never again worked outside the home, she was the loving CEO and nerve center of the family, coordinating and planning for them all, even after they grew up, married, and had children and careers. She moved to New Mexico in 1999, to be closer to the family who dearly loved and admired her. She had a delightful manner and accepted her increasing limitations with dignity and charm. She leaves behind her three daughters: Linda Pack and husband, Andre, Susan Fleischmann, and Heidi Fleischmann and husband, Jim Scott; grandchildren Holly Radke, Ryan Pack, and Brendon Pack; and great-granddaughter, Reya. Two living sisters, Elsy Burger and Lydia Benz, and numerous nieces and nephews in Switzerland will also miss her dearly. She had wonderful and devoted caregivers and nurses for the past seven years. The family wishes to thank Leticia Breceda, Belle Nelson, Carol Caples, Maria Acosta, Emma Ruiz, and Ana Maria Mora who tenderly cared for her until the end of her life. Other caregivers who helped her over the past years include Flora Gomez, Ida Perez, and Jack Whitt. The family also expresses its deep gratitude to her hospice nurse Leann Vincent. Hedy will be cremated and her remains buried in the San Fernando Mission Cemetery with Lawrence and Michael.
