Sluga -- Joseph L. Sluga, 87, born in Sugarite, NM, and a resident of Albuquerque for 51 years, died Monday, October 4, 1999. He is survived by his sons, Donald L. Sluga and wife, Carolyn of Windsor, CO and Harold Sluga and wife, Kay of Espanola; brother, Frank Sluga of California; sister, Mary McKnight of Roswell; grandchildren, Shane Sluga and wife, Gena of Phoenix, AZ, Ronney Sluga and wife, Karen of Rio Rancho, and Tambra Nash and husband, John of Albuquerque; and great-grandchildren, Megan Sluga, Allison Sluga, Jeff Nash, and John Nash. Mr. Sluga was very knowledgable about northern New Mexico history and Indian Arts. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of the Cimmaron, NM Masonic Lodge, Elks Lodge in Albuquerque, and a 75 year member of the S.N.P.J. Services will be held Friday, 10:30 a.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University NE, with Rev. Larry Castillo-Wilson officiating. Eulogy will be presented by Ed Marinsek. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE. Pallbearers will be Shane Sluga, Ronney Sluga, John Nash, Clint Atwood, Gary Atwood and Mark Brozovich. Godown -- Colleen Godown, age 71, passed away on October 3, 1999. She worked at Mercury Cleaners for 23 years until she retired due to illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Godown. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Burris of Albuquerque; three grandchildren, Joanna Wright and husband, Tim of San Diego, CA, Donald Gregory and wife, Pam of Grants, NM, and Kellie Hitchcock and husband, Jeff of Albuquerque; one great-grandson of Albuquerque; sister, Wanda Gross of Riverton, WY; and numerous nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends who will miss her very much. A Memorial service will be held at Direct Funeral Services, 2919 4th NW, at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 5, 1999. She will be buried with her husband on Friday, 11:00 a.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Maher -- Mary Janet Maher, of Denver, formerly of Albuquerque, passed away September 28, 1999. Mary is survived by daughters, Shelia (Sidney) Gunter of Golden, CO and Sharon (Sal) DiMaria of Albuquerque; son, Stephen Matthews of Albuquerque; sisters, Alice Allen and Ruth (Truman) Rhodus, both of Albuquerque; brother, Donald (Margaret) Garver of Renton, WA; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Nieto -- Donald E. Nieto, age 64, of San Antonio, died Tuesday, September 28, 1999. He was preceded in death last November by this father, Rev. Simon A. Nieto. Surviving are his daughters, Sylvia Dawn Vanlandingham and husband, Michael, Natalie Ann Nieto Mills and husband, Alvin, Rebecca Jo James and husband, Jay, and Marina Adele Nieto; son, Donald David Nieto and wife, Britt; brothers, Leo Nieto, John Wesley Nieto, Daniel S. Nieto, Arthur Nieto, Gilbert Nieto, and James Nieto; sisters, Elizabeth Poutney, Shirley Espinoza, Pauline Gonzalez, Charlotte Maldonado, Jeanne Alice Sundermann, Margaret Shogry, and Sylvia Salazar; grandchildren, Jaime, Michael, Jodi, Jackson, Jessica, Jenna, and Diego; ex wives, Ann Verkler Nieto and Adelita Pena Nieto; numerous nephews; nieces; and a host of friends. Ranish -- John Francis Ranish, 88, formerly of Chesapeake Beach, died in Albuquerque, New Mexico on September 25, 1999. He was born on March 29, 1911 in Ramey, Pennsylvania to Michael and Julia Ranish. He served in the United States Army during World War II in Company A 720th Military Police Battalion and was stationed in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines. He was employed in the maintenance division of the Naval Research Laboratory from which he retired in 1975 after 33 years of service. He was a lifetime member of the Stallings-Williams American Legion, Post 206. He is survived by three sisters, Margaret Kittelberger of La Plata, Helen Dennis of Louisville, KY, Elizabeth Quillen of Prospect, KY, Doris Fowler of Waldorf; and one brother, Donald Ranish of Greenwood, DE. He is also survived by longtime companion, Frances Fletcher and her daughter, Sheila Wright, both of New Mexico. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Margueritte Wood Ranish; his parents and sisters, Susan De Bolt and Julia Jones. Funeral services and interment were held on September 29, 1999 at Southern Memorial Gardens. Father Russell of St. Anthony's Catholic Church officiated and members of the American Legion provided honors and presented the flag. Memorial contributions may be made to the Diabetes Association of one's choice. Arrangements were provided by Strong-Thorne Mortuary in Albuquerque and Raymond Funeral Home in Dunkirk.

Dellinger -- Donald L. Dellinger, 48, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died Sunday, September 26, 1999. He is survived by his father, Dale Dellinger; two brothers, Dennis Dellinger and wife, Susan and David Dellinger and wife, Pam, all of Albuquerque; one nephew, Daryl; and two nieces, Jenny and Renee. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dolores Dellinger. Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held Wednesday, 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE, with Pastor Rick Donaho officiating. Collins -- Florence B. Collins, age 96, and a resident of Albuquerque for 43 years, died Sunday in a local nursing home. Mrs. Collins is survived by one daughter, Beverly J. Henting of Minnesota; three sons, Daniel J. Collins of Albuquerque, Harry E. Collins and his wife, Marie L. of Michigan, and Robert H. Collins and his wife, Jan of Minnesota; 18 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry E. Collins and one son, Donald J. Collins. Mrs. Collins was a member of the Lutheran Church and the Macabees. Viewing and visitation will be held Wednesday, September 29, 1999, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at Strong-Thorne Mortuary, 1100 Coal Ave. SE. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday in the Fern Chapel of Strong-Thorne Mortuary with Pastor Larry Pierson officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Memorial Cemetery with Daniel J. Collins, Harry E. Collins, Johnny Giere, Jimmy Collins and Don Demour serving as casket bearers.

Pomeroy -- Michael Frederick Pomeroy Services have been scheduled at the Fist Baptist Church in Roswell at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 28, 1999 for Michael Frederick Pomeroy, 34, who passed away September 24th. Pastor Jim Suttle of the Calvary Chapel will officiate. The vocalist will be Robert Holcomb. There will be second service Wednesday, September 29th, 3:00 p.m., at the First Baptist Church in Tucumcari, New Mexico. Rev. Bob Miller will officiate. Burial will follow at the cemetery in Tucumcari. Mr. Pomeroy was born November 12, 1964 in Espanola, New Mexico, to H. Fred Pomeroy and Sandra Lou Roush Pomeroy. In Tucumcari, on July 18, 1997, he and Lorrie Gene Breck were married. His parents and his wife survive him. He received his B.S. degree from Taylor University and his Masters degree from Highlands University. He was Dean of Students at Goddard High School where he was loved and respected by students and faculty. He was a member of Calvary Chapel in Roswell, National Education Association in Roswell, and the NRA. Other survivors include his son, Timothy Lee Breck; daughter, Kimberly Anne Breck; sisters, Sherry Petersen and husband, Jeff, Polly Everingham and husband, Mike, Pam Burns and husband, Joel; mother-in-law, Genevieve Brown; grandparents, Vincent and Virginia Pomeroy of Centerville, PA and Donald and Leota Roush of New Haven, WV; niece, Austin Lei Everingham; and nephews, Jeremy and Joel Petersen. The pallbearers, Tuesday at Roswell, will be Jay Burson, Cody Burson, Ray Burrola, Michelle Edgett, Charlie Marley and Richard Acosta. The pallbearers, Wednesday at Tucumcari, will be Rudy Velasco Jr., Mark Benavidez, Richard Collins, Raymond Trujillo, Mike Latham and Henry Jimenez. Honorary pallbearers will be Tucumcari High School wrestling team. Arrangements are under the direction of the Ballard Funeral Home.

Varney -- Mr. Lawrence L. Varney died Sunday in Albuquerque at the age of 70. Mr. Varney was a decorated veteran, having served in World War II, the Korean Conflict, and in Vietnam. He was a member of the VFW, DAV, and American Legion Post 13. Mr. Varney retired from the City of Albuquerque after 20 years of service with the SunTran Bus Company. Mr. Varney is survived by his son, Donald W. Varney and wife, Ann; daughter, Debbie Maldonado and husband, Phillip; brother, Francis Varney; and two grandchildren, Phillip and Jennifer Maldonado. Funeral services for Mr. Varney will be held on Wednesday at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church, where the Mass will be celebrated at 12:00 p.m. Burial will take place at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 3:00 p.m. Visitation for Mr. Varney will be held on Tuesday, from 3:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., in the mortuary chapel. A Rosary will be recited on Tuesday evening, 7:30 p.m., at the Salazar & Sons Mortuary, 400 Third St. SW.
